I wish I could give it 10 stars..........2007-09-05
This was an elective text for me in a course I took...Frankly I picked it because it was shorter than some others haha! It has become one of the top 3 or 4 most influential books in my life/faith.
I almost dreaded opening what I thought would be a big list of symbols and explanations...blah, blah blah. There is a vast resource of symbols and their meanings in the last half of the book and every time I looked for something, it was there.
But what really fascinated me was the first half of the book. The insights and learnings of the author were very interesting and have greatly influenced my perspective on some things. I don't want to spoil it, but this one is a keeper and has a very special place on my bookshelf. I also recommend it to everyone I can.
The Dream BOok.......2007-03-17
This book is good as a handbook and enough to get you started with analyzing your dreams. Easy to reference a symbol, get the general meaning of it, then put it in context of your own personal dream to help make sense of it. Basically, the book is a good start, but not very much information on the process of disecting your dreams.
Probably the easiest and most powerful of all the dream books I've looked at!.......2006-08-09
I studied with Betty for years...
(and even had the priveledge of being called up on stage to teach her meditation at one workshop ... when I was much younger, and knew everything... an honor I'll always treasure.)
Welp, when you study with someone brilliant enough to make so many deep concepts transparent and easy to see... the young and stupid among us (yup, me) HAVE to go check out the more difficult routes.
That said, I've looked into, consulted, worked with, Gaggles of other dream books ... and always end up orbiting back to this one. period.
The construction of a dream that she teaches;
the use of your dreams;
and the use of them as insights for opening your own awareness. For stepping into a working awareness of both your own particular inner workings and your spirit's messages for you ... these simple (but not easy) tools, just simply fit.
It makes me think of Hawkings, how he has such a brilliant grasp of his physics, to be able to translate things that have been difficult for physisists to grasp ... into concepts and language that speaks to even the non-math public... Betty's grasp of the insights available in "Dream, Prayer and Meditation, that's all you need" is sweet and so clear as to feel simple.
I will agree with some of the other reviews ... if you're looking for a dictionary to "tell" you what the symbols "mean" ... for some sort of parlor entertainment or just to have a "western world psychologically approved version of the sparks of random thoughts that trigger mind-movies in the night"... pick a different book. Find one that brags the biggest number of "symbols" inside. You'll be happy and undisturbed. However, if you're actually curious about learning what messages your dreams may be offering... you're home ... here.
I've beaten the heck out of 1/2 a dozen copies of the book, in all its different iterations ... and this, the final edit, is the sweetest and best of the bunch.
Love to you, Betty ...
(oh... and Hey! I know you're lookin' out, time to time, from sking in your own Hawaiian paradise .. just wanted to say...
thanks. )
The best dream interpretation book available........2006-07-31
"There are no bad dreams, just bad interpretations." Betty Bethards takes that approach to interpreting dreams. Dreams are our knowing place. Not to be feared, but to direct us. I love her approach. I have purchased this book at least 5 times for friends and family. They all love it too.
A good introduction to the meaning of dreams.......2006-02-24
Simply written, this book is a valuable tool for starting to understand your dreams and use them to gain insight into yourself as well as what may be bothering you.

Illustrated Bible - based dictionary of dream symbols by Dr Joe Ibojie.......2007-08-04
This is my number 1 resource, first choice as a resource when I want to look at and interpret my dreams. As a Bible based dictionary, it provides excellent insight and imagery that will definitely help in revealing the depth of what God wants you to know. I would highly recommend it.

Bought this book on the strength of the other reviews, but this book is horrible--other books in the same category have many more images and explanations included.
Dream Dictionary Review.......2005-09-09
This is a great book. Very up-to-date and clearly written. Highly recommended.
I thought it was OK.......2003-08-14
I've seen better but I've seen worse.
The information on the physical aspects of sleep and dreaming, sleep stages, brain waves, and psychological theories and theorists is all insightful but something that you can skip completely if you have even an introductory level knowledge of Psychology.
The directory of dream images was somewhat refreshing to me in that, unlike the typical "dream dictionary", it allows for the fact that different symbols will mean different things to different people depending on their experiences/world views.
I will warn that, if you have a degree in English and/or are a stickler for details, you should not read this book. It will drive you up a tree with numerous glaringly obvious typos, omissions, and spelling errors.
Alright!.......2003-03-15
I suggest two good A-z guides, The Dream Dictionary and The Discovery of Dreams A-Z for everything you'll need. They'll help over the years yet to come.
I learned a lot but still prefer..........2002-10-30
Dreams: Gateway to the True Self. It just had more depth and insight to the questions we really want answered.

Karri Allrich has a knack for making dream interpretation accessible while also coming across as highly intelligent and resourceful. Having studied dreams and archetypal symbols for over 25 years, Allrich is comfortable in this mysterious landscape, offering convincing interpretations of dreams and symbols. Although A Witches Book of Dreams is pegged as a book for witches, any woman interested in goddess spirituality should find it a friendly resource. "I do not subscribe to Sigmund's theory that snakes are merely phallic symbols and are always about sex," writes Allrich. "Sorry, darlings. I worship the goddess, and to Her, snakes are ancient wisdom and rebirth." One of Allrich's most compelling chapters is "The Importance of Shadow Work," which precedes a section about nightmares. She narrates a convincing argument for exploring one's own shadow side, so that it does not become a destructive force in witchcraft or in everyday life. From here, she enters the shadowy landscape of nightmares, where she helps readers see the supportive messages that lie within our fearful night imagery. The final half of the book is devoted to a dream dictionary, with brief passages about standard dream elements, such as a burglar ("fearing to face one's shadow"), horse ("instinct ... strength, power, and endurance"), wine ("...the spirit, the blood, the holy"). It also includes a chakra chart, bibliography, and index for easy referencing. --Gail Hudson

A Read Gem!.......2006-05-10
This is one of the books mentioned in the book called The Well Read Witch. I am currently in the process of buying all of the books mentioned. This book should definetely be on any Witches list of must-reads!
After all, the title alone evokes poetry. And the book delivers. It is a book about how to explore your dreams, and it tells you how to figure out what your dreams mean to you, not what somebody else thinks they mean.
Also looks at dream magick.
good reference source for dreams.......2004-02-06
As a psychology student and a Wiccan, this book is very helpful when it comes to unraveling the mystery of dreams. I was surprised to see some of the symbols and imagery that I had not thought of at all, and some of my dreams made total sense. Great book for beginners of dream analysis. The book is not a source for great detail, but is a great starting point.
Excellent Find.......2003-09-16
Karri Allrich did a fantastic job with this book.
In the past, when I have tried to find a "dream book", all I could find were dictionaries, and that was great, but it seemed a little to simple, and at times, it was hard to figure out what my dreams actually meant.
With Karri Allrich's book, she explains symbols, how to start a dream jourmal, how to better understand nightmares, how to understand archetypes, anima, shadow work and much more.
She has studied dreams and archetypal symbology for over 25 years and heads up a dream circle. Her examples of dreams are real and her conclusions make a lot of sense.
If you are looking for a book on how to intrepret your dreams, pick up this one, as it is more thorough and covers more than every other book I have found out there.
Not your average dream analysis.......2003-07-06
This book explains dreams in a whole new way. The symbolism is alot more accurate than regular dream analysis books. The first chapter talks about archetypes, which is important to understand when you are decoding your dreams. It also gives general symbolism of dreams but what one person dreams may have a different meaning to them than to someone else. A great book to help understand your dreams better.
A great find.......2002-11-30
As someone who had a) never been able to remember his dreams, and b) never ascribed any importance or meaning to them, I was delighted to come across A Witches Book of Dreams. In her book, Ms. Allrich offers amazingly simple methods to help us remember dreams; convincing evidence that dreams are messages from our subconscious, clues and symbols that, when deciphered, allow us to better understand - and change - our behavior and therefore our lives; and a fascinating dream dictionary that serves as a flexible (rather than iron-clad) guide that enables us to translate the secret language of dreams. If you're a skeptic (as I was), read any of the dreams that Ms. Allrich relates and then interprets in a clear, compelling and insightful way, and I guarantee you'll be a convert! Highly recommended for anyone who is interested in developing a deeper, clearer understanding of him/herself - or who is just plain fascinated with dreams.

THE GUY WHO WROTE THIS WAS A VICAR.HE LIVED IN MY HOUSE.......2007-04-11
ok this sounds weird but the guy who wrote this book was a previous owner of the house i live in, both me and my partner were having weird intense dreams not long after we moved in, then we get a box of these books delivered to my house, and reconied the name, he was a local vicar, the neighbours told me he went slightly mad?..the book didnt really explain too much about the murdurous dreams i was having, but just found the whole thing a bit weird.....
Some good stuff.......2004-02-11
This book was o.k. It follows Jung and Freud very well. There are a lot of symbols meanings available. I had trouble relating many of the meanings to me and my dreams. One good thing was that its not one of those books that tell you your fortune or what's in the future. Also it has a good introductory about important aspects of dreaming.
One of the best.......2002-09-18
Of the 6 or so books on dreams that I own; this is one of the best. While the interpretations given are from an analytical viewpoint, they are written in simple language and in a straight-forward manner. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand their dreams.
The best for psychological dream interpretation........2001-07-17
I have been interested in dream analysis for several years, but each book I read gave a prophetic interpretation of dreams. Although this can be fun, I wanted to find out the deeper meaning of the themes and symbols in my dreams. This book has several explanations for each symbol, stemming from theories of Freud and Jung. It gives the reader meaningful insights about dreams, and it is also very easy to use and understand. The symbols are listed in alphabetical order, covering everything from objects to specific feelings. I have never had trouble finding anything, even if it seemed really abstract. If you are serious about dream analysis, this book should be on your nightstand.
Facinating; my first dreambook, not my last!!!!.......1999-09-30
Like I said this was my first dreambook and i loved it. I have even brought it to work for others to "interpret" dreams, most loved it too. However, Ican't find a lot of things tha keep reacurring in my dreams and it's driving me NUTS!! So I am now looking for another Dream dictionary. But I will keep this one and continue to use it regularlly.

It isn't comprehensive.......2006-11-10
The book gives a few examples of types of dreams and how they relate to what's going on in the dreamer's life. I learned more about dream interpetation from Betty Bethard's The Dream Book.
Heidi's Review.......2004-08-15
I didn't know what to expect when I purchased this book. I thought it was going to be a "dictionary". There was a lot more to this book. McPhee had examples of dreams from his radio show and website. This book made me realize that dreams can be easily interpreted yourself, that you don't need any other kind of dream dictionary book. Every other dream dictionary book I've read said if the dreams were warnings and acted as if dreams are premonitions. However, this book is different, it's more down to earth and fascinating. A great tool if you want to understand your deepest or not so deep dreams!
The Dream Doctor Review.......2003-07-22
I have been interested in dreams for a long time and have bought many dream books. I love Charles Mcphee's book Ask The Dream Doctor because he has collected a good variety of dreams and interpreted them so anyone can understand them. He also gives a good, all around meaning of each symbol before each dream topic. The book is also very easy to read.
I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn more about dream interpretation!
He also does radio shows where people call in with their dreams and get them interpreted - if you have a chance to listen, they are really fun and informative!

VERY GOOD SYMBOL INTERPRETATION BOOK AND MORE............2007-09-26
I had no fewer than 4 books to refer to when I first began learning to read symbols in my dreams. This is the ONE that remains to be used even now, after years of reading/journaling my dreams. It is most helpful in that it includes "actions." It is very informative with colors, numbers, chakra inf., and it includes information on dreaming basics. Including information on why we recieve dreams that include death, sex, nightmares, other significant events. There is a page devoted to children and their dreams and nightmares. Particular symbols are very personal and this book provided me with a foundation to learn how to "determine" personal symbols. I believe that anyone using this book will find that they too will learn to use it in that way. During my dream interpretation work another book became useful because, animals are a large part of my life both in awake and dream time. The book I found that is SO helpful in understanding why certain animals come to us is: ANIMAL SPEAK by Ted Andrews. These two books are always by my bed. I refer to both when interpreting my dreams and synchronicities, I give both of these books 5 stars easily.
A useful & inspiring book.......2007-06-27
This book has been a great resource book for not just interprating dreams, but for creating images for meditations and interprating objects/ images/animals/colours etc. which are around me in my daily waking life. Thankyou.
Customer Reviews:
THE BEST.......2007-05-06
I own over a 100 books on dreams and this is the very BEST book out there. It is quick and easy to use and very acurate. I have had the book a good 10 years and it has never failed to help me analyze my dream symbols.
Wasn't too thrilled with this one ..........2007-04-22
I had been a Mary Summer Rain fan since the first book, "Spirit Song." I followed her books pertaining to Native spirituality, but when I came across this book, I was not too thrilled, and have stopped supporting her cause.
Firstly, Summer Rain makes a claim that each interpretation of the symbols in the dream book are the most accurate of all dream books. I purchased the book years ago and thought that I would look up the symbology to dreams past that I had recorded (I believe that dreams do have meanings and can predict certain events). None of the symbols' interpretation were accurate, as compared to the Dreamer's Dictionary by Stearn Robinson, and I felt that Mary's ego (and not much with No Eyes) played an integral part: "it's my interpretation. Don't believe all other dream books out there ... given by the messengers in the spirit world."
I had always been taught that people's interpretations are always correct, as they can provide many different angles to a person's dream. Be very careful when you get any Native Spirituality books from Mary Summer Rain ... they are more New Age than anything.
A Dream Come True.......2003-03-26
The best symbol book I have read. For six months I have been looking for books on symbols and have been settling for less than what I wanted. This dream symbol book is what I have been looking for and more!
One of the best.......2002-08-15
This book is one of the best on dream symbols i've yet to encounter. Easy to read and understand.
Best dream book ever!.......2001-08-30
This one is a buy, keep and use forever. I have found many of Mary's books insightful but this one is my favorite. I've had it since '97 and I use it almost every morning to review my dreams. You'd be amazed at the stuff your dreams are trying to tell you. If you're interested in personal growth and the like, my advice to you is to buy this book and start paying attention to your dreams.
Customer Reviews:
If a picture is worth a thousand words...........2002-12-06
What I really love about DREAMS is the illustrations. The interpretations are banal and un-connected to anything. For example, it says that dreaming about needles means means you have friends that appreciate you. This fortune cookie approach is a real put-off.
But the pictures are so great that it is worth the set. The artist has put together dozens of little surreal machines and fantastic vehicles that re-combine ordinary objects into wonderful vehicles of transport. A man flying on a sideways apple, a sun that is a hot air balloon, a jack in the box with a star head and more. Great!
Card stock so so, cards kind of small, but the overall packaging is really, really nice with thick glossy boxing. Great gift for artists, thinkings, dreamers.
Great for Teens and Preteens.......2000-05-08
I am buying this for my Teen daughter, this is the second time I have purchased this. This material is a great way for kids, from about preteen to adult to learn the beginnings self-examination in a non-threating way. The Book and Journal are so beautiful, opening it up becomes an experince that led the last child I gave it to to develop a ritual into futher journal writing. He kept it by his bed table as nite time reading material. Certainly good for a hard to buy for teen.
