Book Description
How did Dr. Seuss come to write The Cat in the Hat?
How long did it take him to write The Cat in the Hat and The Cat in the Hat
Comes Back?
Were these books instantly successful, or did their popularity build?
The answers to these questions and more can be found in this fascinating illustrated study of two books that changed the way our children learn how to read.
According to Professor Nel, The Cat in the Hat and its sequel operate on many levels. The books teach reading, but they also teach about poetry, politics, ethics, comics, history, and even conartistry! Complete with the text of both books, photographs, draft material, and essays by Seuss, The Annotated Cat is like a DVD with all the extras. Cat lovers everywhere can gain a deeper understanding of two of the most popular children's books ever written, and the remarkable man behind them.
Customer Reviews:
For the researcher in you.......2007-03-22
The Annotated Cat in the Hat is an interesting read. One sees behind the fun and outlandish escapades of Seuss's most well-known character. A great deal of thought goes into writing and illustrating children's books and this book delves into and explains the process.
Someone who is curious about rhythmic cadences and the reasoning behind them will surely enjoy learning the hidden meanings of those in The Cat in the Hat.
The book is not for the casual reader. It must be read by someone who has a love of language, writing, and the creative process.
The wonderful Dr. Suess.......2007-01-27
With only 236 words, Dr. Seuss blasted onto the children's literature scene with his revolutionary reader The Cat in the Hat. In the days of the Dick and Jane primers, reading was not the most enjoyable pastime for children, but Dr. Seuss changed all that and is now an icon.
In The Annotated Cat: Under the Hats of Seuss and His Cats readers get not only the complete texts and art of The Cat in the Hat, and The Cat in the Hat Comes Back, but also two original essays and a magazine story by Seuss, draft material and sketches, photographs and page-by-page annotations of the two classics, as well as an introduction to the man, Seuss and his work.
The Annotated Cat is an intriguing look into the mind of a children's book legend. Especially for those of us who strive to write for children, the insight put forth on Seuss' creations is mind-blowing in its detail. His quest for perfection (and near attainment of it) shows in the sketches and writes and re-writes of his books.
Philip Nel does an excellent job of analyzing the plethora of information available and commenting on the various aspects of Seuss creations.
Armchair Interviews says: A must-read for the Seuss lover or hopeful children's writer.

Theodor Seuss Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, was one of the titans of 20th century American children's literature--a legacy that shows no sign of diminishing in the 21st. But such epochal fare as The Cat in the Hat and enduring, whimsical characters as Horton, The Grinch and Sam-I-Am represent but one corner of the late writer/artist's vast artistic universe. Other Geisel biographies have detailed his remarkable life and vibrant art, but Massachusetts dentist/Seussiana collector nonpareil Richard D. Cohen serves up a "visual biography" that's part lovingly illustrated coffee table book and part insightful analysis of a creative mind and the various historical and cultural forces that shaped it. Cohen richly illustrates his compelling tribute with key, telling artifacts from his own massive collection. No corner of the author/artist's life has escaped Cohen's obsessive collector's eye, including: turn-of the-century bottles of the Geisel family brewery, Geisel's teenage writings and illustrations, later work that spans careers in cartooning advertising (successful campaigns for Esso, Flit and others), wartime propaganda (including uncredited work on the Oscar-winning Hitler Lives!) and Hollywood (The 5000 Finger of Dr. T). Indeed, in Cohen's thoughtful, lavishly illustrated analysis, Geisel's latter-day incarnation as children's author supreme was but the logical distillation of a lifetime devoted to wit, wordplay and whimsical art. --Jerry McCulley
Book Description
Theodor Seuss Geisel, creator of Horton the Elephant, the Grinch, the Cat in the Hat, and a madcap menagerie of the best-loved children’s characters of all time, stands alone as the preeminent figure of children’s literature. But Geisel was a private man who was happier at the drawing table than he was across from any reporter or would-be biographer. Under the thoughtful scrutiny of Charles D. Cohen, Geisel’s lesser known works yield valuable insights into the imaginative and creative processes of one of the 20th century’s most original thinkers.
Customer Reviews:
Yes I Love It, Sam-I-Am!.......2004-05-29
As we celebrate the centennial of Ted Geisel's birth, material is appearing that looks at the influence of Dr. Seuss on generations of American readers. Dr. Cohen brings us what is obviously a labor of love. Drawing inspiration on his extensive collection of Seussiana, he has produced one of the most lavishly illustrated and broadly scoped book on the life and works of the good doctor.
Cohen reaches back to Geisel's school days and illustrates the development of the artist's style and humor. Continually he will point out how pieces done at various points in Geisel's life can be traced as part of the development of what would become some of his trademark images and beloved characters, including the Grinch. Instead of focusing heavily on Seuss's books, he draws attention to the vast collection of other artwork that was drawn, mostly before the books even came into being. Seuss's work as a humorist, advertising artist, sculptor, and cartoonist (political and otherwise) are shown here as he continued to improve and hone his craft. The end results are the books that are so beloved to multitudes of people who were lucky enough to grow up with Seuss in the house.
The book would be worth it for the pictures alone, but the accompanying text helps get below the surface of many of the pieces, and to tie them together into a artist's whole output. Even if you only look at the pictures and read the captions to the pictures, you will get a whole new appreciation of Dr. Seuss's work over the years. If I any complaint, it is that in some ways the books almost get shorted too much in this narrative, and too often the captions for the illustrations are repetitive to the text. But these are minor quibbles that in no way detract from the glorious whole.
For the Seuss lover, and for the casual reader, this book brings the reader a whole new appreciation of a beloved illustrator's work and the genius that was Dr. Seuss.
The many facets of Dr. Seuss.......2004-05-17
Since 2004 is the Seussentennial, or the hundredth anniversary of Dr. Seuss' birth, this is a great time to get to know more about one of America's most popular icons of children's literature. Ted Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, was far more than an author and illustrator of children's books and movies. His career includes humorist, journalist, advertising genius, magazine and political cartoonist, creator of wartime training and propaganda films, president of a publishing company, and spokesman for children's education.
Author Charles Cohen, a dentist and avid collector of Seussiana, is well qualified to write this visual biography of Ted Geisel. Through lavish illustrations, many from his own collection, Cohen shows the many facets of Geisel's art and imagination. The reader is treated to Geisel's earliest works from long before his first published children's book. These include examples of his college newspaper cartoons and his many successful advertising campaigns that blended humor and salesmanship. These creations are juxtaposed with his later children's books to provide the reader a deeper understanding of how culture and history shaped the evolution of his ideas and whimsical bestiary, and to point out the same themes cropping up over and over again in his works.
Although this book provides a fascinating view into many unusual perspectives of Dr. Seuss the artist and innovator, there is little here about Ted Geisel the man. In the introduction, Cohen says that he neither met Geisel nor interviewed anyone who knew him. Instead he delved into Geisel's works to discover what made him tick. As a result, there are many facts missing about Geisel's personal life and friendships. The few personal facts that were thrown in, mostly towards the end of the book, came from out of nowhere and made me crave more details. It is for this reason, especially since this book is called a "visual biography," that I rated it four stars instead of five. It is more a visual exploration of Geisel's works than a biography. Nevertheless, I strongly recommend this book. It will open your eyes to a creatively obsessed man that you never realized existed. It will also rekindle your fond memories of the Dr. Seuss books you read as a child. Perhaps it will even shed a bit of light on why you loved those books so much.

A Grown-up Biography of a Children's Hero.......2004-03-20
With the awful, distorted, contrived pile of wasted film, conjured up in the form of Mike Myers' take on the "Cat in the Hat," it would be nice to know why, in the beginning of it all, Dr. Seuss was ever popular at all. He was a great writer and cartoonist before his famous cat's striped hat became chic fashion among post-grunge era teenagers.
In "The Seuss, the Whole Seuss and Nothing But the Seuss: A Visual Biography of Theodor Seuss Geisel" by Charles Cohen, we are shown the greatness of Seuss -- of Theodor Geisel, through drawings, paintings and text. We get to learn about his early days at Dartmouth, as he toyed with hybridic animals, wit and satire.
Not every idea worked. Seuss, an experimenter, evolved from being a talented but rustic styler of odd creatures into a sophisticated artist of odd, if not bizarre beasts that had genuine identity.
Before he write and drew books about green eggs, grinches, and elephants named Horton, he was an editorial cartoonist. His language in many of the cartoons was far from being politically correct, but his social commentary decrying racism was right on. He hard-handed racist thought with no evidence of his sweet children's characters kindness.
Cohen has produced an array of research. Samples of Seuss' art grace most pages. We also get a look at the vast merchandising, parodies, and unlicensed knock-offs.
This is not a children's book. Don't be fooled by the name of the publisher. It is for someone interested in reading a serious look at the history of one of America's beloved cartoonists.
I fully recommend "The Seuss, the Whole Seuss and Nothing But the Seuss: A Visual Biography of Theodor Seuss Geisel." by Charles D. Cohen.

Fabulous!.......2004-03-05
This book is not all about reiterating the Seuss stories we've already read, but instead an objective well researched pictoral and written account of the man so many love. Cohen does a great job researching the possible meanings of Geisel's cartoons and later texts. There are many, many Judge magazine and other political cartoons that are absolutely hilarious, and absolutely adult in nature (similar to alot of his "childrens" stories).
I highly recommend this book to anyone what likes to drop into a chapter then skip to another at an opposite end of the book because they are somewhat independent although chronological, it is easy to skip around to the parts you feel like reading for that day.
Also, at 400 pages full color, who can pass up the bargain?
f.y.i. This biography seems to coincide a lot with *In Search of Dr. Seuss* the movie that just came out in dvd
Gorgeous book.......2004-02-26
Kudos to Dr. Cohen. The writing is insightful, the illustrations and pictures are outstanding, the sheer volume of content is overwhelming and of course, the dedication is tear-jerking. A must have for any Seuss fan. Read the inside jacket-I'm guessing someday there will be a Poem Repair Shop.
Book Description
The year 2002 marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of the first appearance of Freddy the Pig-that illustrious barnyard character called "that charming ingenious pig" by The New York Times.
Walter Brooks's Freddy the Pig first appeared in print in 1927, in To and Again (later published as Freddy Goes to Florida). Devotees and acclaim soon followed, as did the winning relationship between Brooks and illustrator Kurt Wiese. The result was twenty-six Freddy books in all, each accompanied by Wiese's vibrant and comic illustrations. As Brooks once said, "Kurt Wiese draws such very sympathetic pigs!"
Celebrating the seventy-fifth anniversary is this delightful volume of Kurt Wiese's illustrations, capturing the incomparable Freddy in his many guises-as detective, poet, banker, and pilot, just to name a few! Here, too, are Freddy's adventures and misadventures, his human and barnyard friends and foes. Together with choice bits of Brooks's text, Kurt Wiese's illustrations capture the rollicking humor and dramatic spirit of Freddy's world. Included, too, are several exciting original Freddy illustrations-never before in print from the collection of Lee Secrest, former president of Friends of Freddy, and keeper of the Freddy archives. An introduction by Michael Cart, one of the foremost authorities on all things Freddy puts Kurt Wiese's life and art into context with Freddy and his creator, Walter Brooks.

I love this book. It's a wonderful source of Mexican Folktales. Find things like a Lechusa, black dog and La Llorona in this great little book of Mexican folktales.
E For Effort.......2004-04-10
I do recall hearing many of these stories as a child and the book triggered wonderful childhood memories. Coming from a Mexican family, these stories were presumed to be actual accounts and were a successful tool for parents to keep children in line.
These accounts came to life when Grandpa whispered them to us on a warm, moonlit Summer night...as the kids huddled around him, clutching on to one another.
I am grateful that the essence of the stories is preserved in writing. In all fairness to the author, something is lost during the transition from storyteller to the pages in a book. A good story teller has the unfair advantage of mannerisms, facial expressions and the opportunity to grab an unsuspecting, trembling youngster at the most chilling point of the story.
To readers who did not grow up where these stories were an essential part of life, please do not judge these tales on the book alone, for they were meant to be heard, not read.
Customer Reviews:
Much more than a snowy day.......2005-01-31
Let us all sit back for a moment and pay silent tribute to the great biographies of children's writers out there today. Heck, let's go so far as to name them too. Why there's "Ezra Jack Keats" by Dean Engel and Florence B. Freedman and then there's... um... well.... hm. All right, I'll simplify the request. Let's all sit back for a moment and pay silent tribute to the ONLY great biography of a children's writer out there (written specifically with kid readers in mind). And that would be the aforementioned "Ezra Jack Keats". Seeing it on the New York Public Library's list of 100 Children's Books Everyone Should Know, I felt a twinge guilty that I'd never even heard of the book before. So I was plenty reluctant about reading it. I mean, yes I understand the groundbreaking nature of his "Snowy Day" and I've always had an incredible respect for "Louie", "Goggles", and "Apt. 3", but let's be serious here. How interesting could this book actually be? We're not talking about someone who went out and climbed mountains or fought wild woolly snaggle-toothed wildebeests. We're talking about a simple author/illustrator. "Ezra Jack Keats" was, to my mind, going to be a long hard slog. Instead, it was light, fascinating, sad, and inspiring. Everything, in fact, that a good biography about such a man should be.
Born Jack Ezra Katz in 1916, Ezra was fond of drawing right from the get-go. He'd find any abandoned burlap or piece of wood he could get his hands on so that he could draw and paint. His father thought this to be a waste of talent, but Ezra was good. The book identifies those critical moments in Ezra's young life that determined what kind of person he would be. There was the time he ran away from home and ended up getting semi-mugged by the local bullies. The time he had a brief theological conversation with Tzadik, the local reclusive holy man. The time he discovered the library, and the time he made a lifelong friend named Itz. The book also looks at how he eventually grew up and became the children's illustrator he's remembered as today. But mostly this is the formation of an artist as a young man. The incidents within a family and a life that made him who he was.
Now the book was written, partly, by Florence Freedman (any relation to Russell, I wonder?) who was Ezra's teacher in high school. But I suspect the real writing credit should fall on Dean Engel herself. In many ways, Engel has extended the average hum-drum children's book into a real work of beauty. Take, for example, this section that discusses Ezra's newfound friendship with his scientifically minded friend Itz. In this section Ezra would teach Itz about colors and artistic expression and Itz would teach Ezra about the science behind the beauty. For example: "He also explained how, before it dies, a lieaf stands upright on its branch for just a moment and then, with no air to support it, flutters to the ground". I've picked out this sentence in the book because I feel it's absolutely lovely to read. One of those little moments of reflection too often lacking in the soulless biographies kids are forced to read every year. This book is different. It dares to say something beautiful in the midst of fact fact facts.
Some of the problems criticized by professional reviewers are a twinge off-base. For example, the School Library Journal review pointed out that this book hasn't any endnotes. Then again, all information that might have been placed in an Endnote section is located in the About the Author's section on the back bookflap. And the criticism that this book hasn't a bibliography is just downright wrong. There is a bibliography of Keats' written and illustrated books. Just not the ones he drew for other people. The criticism given by Booklist that the random illustrations paired with moments in Keats' life don't always match up is somewhat correct. Still, it isn't particularly distracting and many times works particularly well.
"Ezra Jack Keats" the biography is faboo. It's well-written, has a great subject to examine, and belongs on every child's reading list. In the course of following a single man it covers history, art, and the course of a life. Ezra Jack Keats made an amazing contribution to children's literature. His expertise cannot be downplayed. Hence, this book is a fitting tribute to such a man.
Book Description
Just in time for the movie event of the year - THE DA VINCI CODE - comes a droll gift book for literati, featuring fifty-eight of the best books never written.
Who is the mysterious hero of WUTHERING TIGHTS? Do you know how TO GRILL A MOCKINGBIRD? Could you face the HEART OF DORKNESS? There are many shelves in the library of unwritten books, all of them empty. Inspired by their blank pages - and unencumbered by actual authors - award-winning illustrator Chris Riddell presents a remarkable collection of humorous drawings that slyly turns the literary canon on its head.
Customer Reviews:
Flat-Out Funny.......2006-11-22
Known for his political cartoons and book illustrations, artist Chris Riddell has assembled an entertaining collection of illustrations sure to please literature/English teachers everywhere. In THE DA VINCI COD: AND OTHER ILLUSTRATIONS FOR UNWRITTEN BOOKS, Riddell shares drawings that spoof famous book titles.
Besides "The Da Vinci Cod," there are drawings for "The Apes of Wrath," "The Water Adolescents," and "Oliver Bust." Sixty-six titles are spoofed, with the original publication dates ranging from 1776 to 2003, with the "apologies" to the authors at the back (in other words, Riddell provides a key in case a reader can't figure out the spoof).
This book is flat-out funny, and often irreverent. Literature teachers might get a kick out of assigning classes to figure out the title spoofs, as should the students (theoretically).
For anyone who likes to read or appreciates classic literature, this little book is a hoot. Take it home so you always have a few laughs available on an otherwise gloomy day.

Book Description
The adventurous saga of the settling of the Plymouth Colony is strikingly portrayed in this magnificent book. Spectacular paintings by renowned artist N.C. Wyeth, gloriously bring to life the carefully researched text by well known children's book author Robert San Souci. The story of the Pilgrims, including the first Thanksgiving, is a central part of America's history and, over the course of time, it has taken on an almost mythical quality. Drawing upon a variety of resources, including the author's trip to the Plimouth Plantation, the text dispels some popular misconceptions about the setting of our nation as it broadens our understanding of the bravery and determination of our forebears. A beautiful artbook as well as an informative history book, N.C Wyeth's Pilgrims belongs in every home, library, and classroom.

A good glimpse of history for children.......2003-03-17
I thought that this book was a really good book. The best part about it was that it had to do with history. I think it will still keep the interest of kids while teaching them about what happened back then. It also had great pictures. While I was reading it, the pictures jumped out at me. It wasn't too lengthy either. I found that to be quite nice. I would recommend it to children if they are looking for an interesting and educational book. With this book, you can not only enjoy it, but you can also learn. That is why I gave it 5 stars.
An Attractive and Readable Book on the Pilgrims!.......2000-11-21
The lush, romanticized illustrations--in the same tradition as Norman Rockwell--by renowned American artist N.C. Wyeth, are what first draws young readers to this book. While the paintings taken from Wyeth's murals may not always line up with the clear, concise writing of Robert San Souci, it doesn't detract from the narrative.
This is a classy book for middle grade students, providing a readable account of the Pilgrim's journey aboard the Mayflower and first year in New England. While the illustrations may be idealized, San Souci leaves no doubt that life was difficult for the settlers of Plymouth.
Notes at the end of the book provide interesting and helpful background on the writing of the book and information about the artist, who died in 1945, and the murals that are the source of these illustrations.
This is a nice addition for information on New England colonial life, as well as the feast of Thanksgiving.
