4 out of 5 stars When you have exhausted all other insomnia cures..........2007-09-28

I struggled with insomnia for more than 10 years. I rarely got more than 3-4 hours sleep per night. I had tried all the suggested remedies -- yoga, sleeping pills (Ambien), mild anti-depressants, etc... Nothing helped. Then I decided that enough was enough. I made sure there were no physical causes for my insomnia (such as sleep apnea) and then I got to work. I found Dr. Jacobs' book at my local library. The idea of a drug-free program appealed to me. Yes, some of his ideas may sound simple but simple has worked for me. I'm not saying I sleep eight hours a night every night but my sleep has definitely improved. I feel human again! If you are ready for help and are willing to follow the book's advice, you will see improvement. If you are like most people who want a magic pill for insomnia -- you won't find it here. Once you are ready to put in some effort, give the book a try. Attitude is everything!

3 out of 5 stars Say Good Night to Insomnia.......2007-07-15

The book does contain some helpful (and drug free) ideas to help with insomnia. It is a quick read but is very wordy. I think the book could have written in half as many pages.

I bought the book used, almost half priced, so I guess I got my monies worth!!

5 out of 5 stars Drug-free help .......2007-07-07

In a society where drugs are often prescribed as a first step toward treatment for pretty much every ailment, this six-week therapy program aims to give the sufferer help without the use of drugs, thereby avoiding the possible side effects and dependency that drugs sometimes cause. A long-time insomnia sufferer myself, this unfortunately was the very last thing that was recommended to me after a year of doctor's visits, a very unpleasant polysomnogram, and various drug prescriptions that I reacted badly to. Having taken biofeedback therapy many years ago for migraine relief, I had already been introduced to the potential for the power of the mind over the body, and this therapy program incorporates that, and other self-help methods, to alleviate insomnia. And as a current user of this program, I can say it works. An open mind is required to make this work; skepticism and negativity will surely cause it to fail. I recommend this highly to anyone who suffers from insomnia. And as an added bonus, this program was much more affordable than even ONE of the many prescriptions I had tried. If it doesn't work for you, you have only lost a few dollars. If it does, it was priceless.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book and one other recommendation.......2007-05-28

Great insights and very well written. Also, for those of you in search of an effective sleep aid, I found and bought a pretty cool system on Ebay called the `Sleep Wizard'...it's a white noise program but way batter and more varied than others I have tried before, cost me $10 and I would have spent several times that price. 5 out of 5 stars Everyone can benefit.......2007-05-04

Everyone sleeps and so everyone can benefit enormously from this book. It describes various processes that take place in our bodies and gives a large amount of suggestions for improving ourselves in various aspects of our bodies and minds. The book explains things both scientifically and simply, so it can be appreciated by people of all levels.

If one wanted to follow the method, there are several forms and charts to fill out in order to keep up easily. I didn't do this, I just picked up on all the little tips throughout and I think the book definitely helped me learn to deal with stress and sleep better.

Book Description

Getting a young child to go to sleep and stay asleep is one of the most challenging aspects of parenting. Yet many parents resign themselves to enduring years of exhaustion. Practical help is not easy to find, and much of the available advice stresses letting even very young babies "cry it out," an option that is not comfortable for many parents. Kim West, known to her clients as The Sleep Lady®, has developed an alternative and effective approach that is gentler on both parent and child. West emphasizes that sleep is a learned skill and explains how parents can teach children to sleep, even at an early age. She starts with newborns, showing parents how to avoid sleep problems from the beginning. And she has solutions for older babies and children who have developed poor bedtime, nighttime, or nap time habits. The Sleep Lady method—including a gentle, practical, step-by-step program called The Sleep Lady Shuffle—has proven effective for hundreds of families. West has spent more than a decade successfully teaching parents how to help their children sleep soundly and independently through the night. She provides specific, achievable guidelines that work, while also taking into account the values, lifestyles, and parenting styles unique to each family. Most parents who adopt The Sleep Lady Shuffle see dramatic improvements in a few weeks, if not days. Good Night, Sleep Tight contains age-specific chapters from birth through five years old, in which West succinctly outlines what action to take; discusses important developmental changes; provides sample waking, feeding, and napping schedules; advises how to use The Sleep Lady Shuffle; and lays out common problems and solutions. Included throughout are real-life testimonies and anecdotes from parents West has assisted. Good Night, Sleep Tight also discusses co-sleeping, bedtime strategies for twins and siblings, and dealing with nightmares and illnesses. West even offers tips on how to minimize sleep disruption when families travel or experience other breaks in routine. Essential reading for any tired parent, or any expectant parent who wants to avoid the pitfalls of sleeplessness, Good Night, Sleep Tight offers a practical, gentle, easy-to-follow remedy that will work for all families in need of nights of peaceful slumber.

4 out of 5 stars A good mix of sleep strategies.......2007-09-21

I first read Babywise, which a friend had given me. We started on a flexible schedule with feedings about every three hours. This was very helpful and a good start, but after reading some negative things about the book, I wanted to read some others. There are so many different theories on sleeping and feeding! I found Good Night, Sleep Tight and really liked it because it seemed to be a good mix of the different theories. There are a few main components that almost every sleep book I've read recommends, including having a bedtime routine, putting the baby down drowsy but awake, and creating a sleep friendly environment. This book begins with those basic components and gives you additional information and resources. I like that it gives some guidance as to what a typical schedule might be like, what you might expect, etc. It's also nice to see that what you're experiencing is very normal and that there are things you can do about it. My son started sleeping through the night at about 3 months. Naps are still a little difficult to settle him down for and I just pulled the book out again to get some advice on making naps a little easier. There is a whole section of suggestions. I don't think this is a cry it out book. She creates a middle ground between letting your baby cry and responding immediately. Although we didn't need to do the "Sleep Lady Shuffle" she suggests, so I can't comment on that. You will drive yourself crazy trying to find the "right" way to do things. Read what you can and do what feels right.

1 out of 5 stars not worth it.......2007-08-25

This is essentially a "cry it out" book, except she recommends staying in the room for the crying part. There is no new information I could find. So utterly not worth it. It seems that this book was written to generate sales for her individual consultation service. If you've read "No Cry Sleep Solution" and "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" you do not need this book. Just meet the ideas in the middle and realize there will be some uncomfortable nights, then spend your money on something worthwhile.

3 out of 5 stars Not much help for younger babies.......2007-08-24

We bought this book when our daughter was four months old (and had it shipped overnight--we were getting desperate!). It wasn't very helpful, as it turns out. Her advice for babies this age essentially boils down to letting them cry it out, but staying in the room with them. Not particularly helpful, especially since our daughter was more hysterical when we stayed in the room with her than when we left her alone. We ended up doing more of a Ferber approach. No fun for anyone involved, but it worked.

When she was seven months old, we went on a trip, and her sleep schedule got all messed up. We got the book out again, and this time read the chapter on six- to seven-month-olds. This is the age where West introduces her Sleep Lady Shuffle. The idea is that you stay near their crib and "shh-shh-shh" at them, pat their back, whatever. It's a pretty good approach, and it seems to work for our older baby. So if you're looking for advice on how to get your six-month-old to sleep, you'll probably get some good information here. If your baby is three months old, get another book.

3 out of 5 stars It's okay.......2007-08-21

I needed something to tell me how much my baby should be sleeping and to give some direction on how to help that happen. If you want to or need to impose a schedule on your baby, this book is the least dogmatic I've read. It's also okay if what you want is some general baby sleep information.

5 out of 5 stars Saved our sanity!.......2007-08-01

My daughter is what Kim West calls "an alert baby," much like one of her daughters was. Which is a euphemism for "the child doesn't want to sleep -- ever." By the time my daughter was eight months old (keeping in mind that I'd returned to work when she was 10 weeks old), I would have paid thousands of dollars for some means of getting her (and us!) to sleep. We read a review of "Good Night, Sleep Tight" and not only bought it but also paid for a phone consultation with Ms. West. That thorough evaluation, combined with what we'd read in the book, turned our daughter into a sleeper within three nights!! I couldn't believe it -- I kept checking to make sure she was still breathing. Among the invaluable tips we learned was that for our alert non-sleeper, the nightlight was a detriment to her falling back asleep; she'd start looking around and seeing toys and then would want to play. And turning off the nightlight was just one of many changes we made that worked for our daughter. Today, she still has bouts of sleep disruption and when she does, the first thing I do is pull out "Good Night, Sleep Tight," which we keep in a handy place -- obviously, I cannot recommend this book enough!

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Great, holistic answer to insomnia and other sleep problems!.......2007-03-03

Surely all of us, at one time or another, have gone a few rounds with insomnia. When you've had trouble sleeping, you drag yourself out of bed in the morning feeling all achy and exhausted, just as if you had been in the ring battling an opponent all night. In his book Good Night: The Sleep Doctor's 4-Week Program to Better Sleep and Better Health, Dr. Breus coaches you on all the effective ways to overcome insomnia - ways that many of us would never even think of! - and put it down for the count. I found his book expertly written in a conversational and friendly style with suggestions and instructions that are easy to understand and follow.

Part I of the book is called "Quick-Fix Sleep Solutions" and includes the first four chapters. You know what a bad night's sleep is, but what exactly is a good night's sleep? In chapter one, Dr. Breus explains enough about the science of sleep to give you a good foundation for understanding how and why a good night's sleep is necessary to feeling good and looking younger. Chapter two introduces you to the "Three Most Troublesome Culprits in Disordered Sleep...and How to Conquer Them." (If you guessed that caffeine is one of the three, you're right; however, the third culprit might surprise you!) The discussion in chapter three is about the people in your life - your partner, children, and business associates - and how you can manage the disruptions in sleep they may cause. Chapter four is "The Extreme (but Easy!) Bedroom Makeover" and is one of my favorite chapters. In it you learn how to make small changes in the bedroom that add up to a big difference, enabling you to improve your quality of sleep!

"Part II: From Waistlines to Face Lines: You Are What You Sleep" includes chapters five, six, and seven. Did you know that a poor night's sleep can undermine your diet, exercise, or combination weight-loss program? The first chapter in part two discusses how the body chemistry behind a good night's sleep can not only enhance your weight-loss, but acts as a "cosmetic medicine" that empowers your cells to rejuvenate and reverse the damage caused by age, stress, environment, and other factors. Chapter six talks about the important role played by quality sleep in the areas of exercise and sex, and how the right kind of sleep can not only perk up your love life, it can enhance those intimate moments with your partner. If you have ever thought that a nap in the afternoon was a good idea, chapter seven will show you how right you are, and Dr Breus explores different types of naps to help you choose the one that will deliver just the right amount of rest and energy without adversely impacting your sleep that night.

Part III launches the remarkable four-week program, "28 Nights to Sound Sleep Forever" developed by Dr. Breus. Chapter eight takes you step-by-step through the first week of his comprehensive and detailed program to improve your rejuvenating, regenerating sleep. He leads you through a series of small changes from scheduling sleep time to relaxation techniques while you keep a Sleep Diary to record your reactions. Evaluation is the keyword for chapter nine; here you will take the second week to review your Sleep Diary entries from the previous chapter so that you may evaluate the effectiveness of each change, and try some new techniques if you need to. You also receive friendly reminders that help you to stay on track. Weeks three and four of the program comprise chapter ten; here you finalize and follow your personalized sleep program by combining and practicing all the bedtime routine, relaxation, and other techniques that worked well for you.

"The Sleep Aid Industry" is the topic of Part IV of the book. Dr Breus answers a few common questions concerning sleep-aid supplements and pharmaceuticals. As a holistic practitioner myself, I especially value this information about the hazards of using medications or other "quick fix" techniques in attempting to attain quality, restful sleep. To close, The Sleep Doctor offers some excellent guidelines to follow in order to reap the benefits of a completely natural night's sleep for business and vacation travelers, and people who work evening or night shifts.

The two appendices at the end of the book include a reminder list in outline format along with Sleep Diary charts, and a list of additional resources.

I am delighted to have this book in my toolkit to recommend to stress-management clients as well as to other holistic practitioners. You can learn more about Dr. Breus and his book Good Night: The Sleep Doctor's 4-Week Program to Better Sleep and Better Health, by visiting his website www.soundsleepsolutions.com . 5 out of 5 stars The best and most comprehensive guide to sleep and wellness.......2007-02-24

After more than 25 years of insomnia I've read my share of books on sleep and this is by far the best.

It provides a great guide to sleep hygiene which includes everything from choosing the best mattress, to sound proofing your room, developing good bedtime habits and understanding your own issues.

The book is full of handy quizzes that help you identify problem areas and provides comprehensive solutions for you to address these issues and get a good night's sleep. The book is full of examples and helpful tips and includes worksheets for you to record your sleep during the four week program.

If you're impatient to jump into the 4 week program you can start that immediately but I would strongly recommend reading the preceding chapters so you can eliminate problems from light, noise, pets, uncomfortable pillows and the like.

Good Night covers all the basics of getting a good night sleep, including recommendations on snacks to help you get to sleep and ideas for decorating your room to minimise distractions.

The book distinguishes between disordered sleeping and sleep disorders covering off the common sleep disorders and how they are diagnosed. The pros and cons of various remedies including sleeping pills and alternative remedies are also covered.

For anyone interested in weight loss or wanting to look younger or remove those black circles under the eyes, Good Night tells you why sleep might be interfering with your energy, appetite and appearance as well as providing guidelines to look and feel younger healthier and slimmer. What could be better?

4 out of 5 stars Good Practical Advice.......2006-11-16

I thought I'd heard every statistic and help tip that existed re: sleep problems and sleep hygiene -- keep your room cold and dark, wear earplugs, etc. But refreshingly, this book had a few tips I hadn't seen or heard elsewhere -- including descriptions of several yoga-like relaxation and meditation exercises to help you unwind.

I'm particularly fond of the concept of a "power down hour" where you spend a full, committed hour to unwinding before bed. Though it sounds unrealistic in the modern world, that anyone would take a full hour to do this, the cool thing is that 1/2 of this wind-down hour is meant to be devoted to doing what the author calls "mindless chores" like folding laundry. Makes a lot of sense to me, to save these chores for late night, when doing them may actually help put you to sleep!

There are a lot of tips like this in the book. Highly recommended overall.

5 out of 5 stars An important self-help book.......2006-11-14

A key to functioning well in all aspects of our lives is for us to get enough sleep and, more importantly, get enough GOOD sleep. Dr. Breus helps us do just that with his honest, no-nonsense approach. His clinical insight, helpful explanations, and real-world examples make this book an important read for anyone who desires to become a better sleeper.

"We are a sleep-sick society," says William C. Dement, M.D., Ph.D. According to Dr. Dement, "sleep science" has yielded a great deal of scientific knowledge about sleep--yet the general public, and even doctors, aren't aware of it. Sleep disorders are routinely misdiagnosed or ignored, sometimes resulting in medical tragedy and death, frequently leading to chronic exhaustion. In The Promise of Sleep, Dr. Dement aims to remedy that by making the latest sleep information accessible to health professionals and lay readers. He describes the sleep cycle and gives a short history of sleep research. Then he dives into clear and detailed explanations of concepts and conditions we've all heard about, but that few of us understand: sleep debt, biological clock, circadian rhythm, insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy. He discusses why we need sleep (sounds obvious, but it isn't) and the role of dreams. After 300 pages of sleep facts, Dr. Dement teaches you how to "reclaim healthy sleep" in your own life. You learn to assess your personal sleep situation by keeping a sleep diary, measuring your sleep debt, and evaluating your risk of sleep disorders; find appropriate treatment; manage sleep crises; and adopt a "sleep-smart lifestyle." A three-week "sleep camp" program at the end helps you put all the strategies together. This book will put you to sleep--and that's meant as praise! --Joan Price

Book Description

Sleep better, live longer with the groundbreaking information and step-by-step program in this revolutionary book.

Healthful sleep has been empirically proven to be the single most important factor in predicting longevity, more influential than diet, exercise, or heredity. And yet we are a sleep-sick society, ignorant of the facts of sleep--and the price of sleep deprivation. In this groundbreaking book, based on decades of study on the frontiers of sleep science, Dr. William Dement, founder and director of the Stanford University Sleep Research Center, explains what happens when we sleep, when we don't, and how we can reclaim the most powerful--and underrated--health miracle of all.

Taking us on a fascinating tour of our sleeping body and mind, Dr. Dement reveals the price we have paid for ignoring sleep--an epidemic of heart disease, 33 percent of traffic-fatigue-related accidents, and immeasurable mental and psychological disadvantages. And he offers a hands-on prescription for vibrant good health and longevity, including...self-tests to determine how much sleep you really need...the role of prescription and over-the-counter sleeping aids...the latest research on how sleep affects the immune system...how to combat insomnia, snoring, and jet lag...plus information on sleep disorder clinics nationwide, Web sites, and more.

4 out of 5 stars Invaluable health info.......2007-07-22

The author is one of the pioneers of sleep research, totally in command of his subject and it's surprising exactly how important sleep is in a healthy lifestyle. My only complaint: I would have preferred more sleep research results and less sleep research.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful work.......2007-01-19

"After all the research I've done on sleep problems over the past four decades, my most significant finding is that ignorance is the worst sleep disorder of them all."

A half century of work combined to create a unique perspective. The first chapters deal with the basics: what sleep is and what we know about it. The next chapters deal with biology and sleep debt; causes: such as insomnia, apnea, narcolepsy, and fatigue; the effects: on the immune system and mood; dreams; personal needs; children; lifestyle. The appendix contains a list of sleep centers in each state.

"People need to change the way they sleep and live."

My sleep problems were brought on by personal troubles and trying to run a business 24/7; simplification was the answer. Excellent book; highly recommended, even for those just interested in the subject.

"Healthy sleep has been empirically proven to be the single most important determination in predicting longevity."

Wish you well
Scott

3 out of 5 stars Important reference, too long, a bit dated.......2007-01-09

If you have just become interested in sleep disorders and want to know the foundations, this book is likely a must read by a pioneer in the field. The author makes a strong case that the medical issues of humans during the night is much undervalued in current practice. However, the book is too long, and is written in an inefficient and chatty style that doesn't have an obvious organizational structure to it. This makes it hard to use as a reference for the serious reader and a bit too ponderous for the casual lay reader. Furthermore, after reading other references and recent sleep and medical literature, it is likely that the author's rigid theory of a sleep deficit, and other major conclusions, are matters of current debate. The book, therefore, is a bit dated.

5 out of 5 stars The Best! My insomnia has been gone for years now.......2006-11-21

I had a bad case of insomnia which after reading this book and following its principles has never returned

5 out of 5 stars Thoroghly and well written by The Man of Sleep himself........2006-11-03

Dement tells us himself how the study of sleep got started and took off, but then how scientists now are not giving sleep the attention it deserves. Sleep deprivation leads to depression, listlessness, lack of motivation, decreased alertness, and possible involuntary sleep episodes (falling asleep at the wheel, sleep apnea, etc.). Missed sleep is not made up by sleeping more the next day/night but rather accumulates over days and months until one has a vast accumulation of "sleep debt". This is proven through scientific studies as Dement iterates in his text. Helpful and informative, this is the book for anyone suffering from lack of sleep and is the foremost book on the subject of sleep for psychological courses focused on sleep & sleep disorders. Also includes Freud's and Jung's explanations of why we dream.

As a Carmelite monk, the 16th-century Spanish mystic St. John of the Cross was well trained in the systematic theology of St. Thomas Aquinas. In Dark Night of the Soul, St. John's sharply organized mind gives clean shape to his mystical belief in a loving Being somewhere outside the realm of feeling, thought, or imagination, who can only be known through love. Dark Night of the Soul describes the process of purgation, first of senses, and then of spirit, that precedes the soul's loving Union with God. To quote from this book would detract from the coiled power of its tightly focused picture of the soul's progress; suffice it to say that there has never been a better book for discouraged Christians. When you cannot understand what or why you believe, but you find yourself unable to abandon faith, look to St. John for help. --Michael Joseph Gross

Book Description

St. John of the Cross has been called "the most sublime of all Spanish mystics," and his spiritual masterwork, Dark Night of the Soul, stands as one of the greatest contributions to the literature of mysticism.

5 out of 5 stars Deep study for self-examination and meditation.......2007-06-08

Do not let the size of this little classic make you think it will be a quick read and easy study. It is difficult reading with regard to the somewhat archaic language but more so for the probing nature the author demonstrates in self-examination. It is not a quick study but one that helps you work out your salvation with fear and trembling. The wounds it can inflict may be painful but necessary for true healing of the human heart. Read and meditate on the words a little at a time - the sections are short enough to facilitate that approach. This is no self-help chicken soup for the dark night, it is major surgery for the wounded and sin-stained heart under intense self-examination.

5 out of 5 stars Good for those serious about their faith........2007-01-09

This is a wonderful book for those who have been adult Catholics for some time, but wonder about the direction of their relationship with God. If you are a young or new Catholic, read The Imitation of Christ by Thomas Kempis instead because you probably won't get much out of this one.

A warning also to "Cafeteria Catholics" who don't take their faith seriously: don't waste your money. This is not the watered down, mindless drivel so popular among those who want theologians to tell them what they want to hear. This is for serious catholics who want an honest and deep relationship with God. If you fall into that category, then you will find this a very rewarding read, and will be amazed with the insight he shows into the christian journey.

2 out of 5 stars A Classic but Difficult for the Lay Reader! Great for Scholars and Academics Though!.......2006-06-25

There is no doubting the credentials of the author of this work; a bona fide mystical saint but the way this book is written in a very difficult to understand translation into English (on purpose!)suggests to me that this is more for the scholar or academician than for the lay believer.

There are footnotes that are longer than the main texts on many pages! This makes for difficult reading and in sticking religiously (sorry)to authenticity, reading for the average Joe is excruciatingly painful. Perhaps this is part of the purgation one has to tolerate to achieve purity or at least gives us some idea of how difficult it is to be so pure.

Thank goodness for Jesus who shows now why He had to come and save us and to bring us to the Father because the average Joe who I'm sure God wants saved as well would struggle to understand the text as written here. Don't despair, maybe someone like a Scott Hahn with his brilliant gift of simplifying the vastly difficult scholarly texts will one day try his hand at interpreting this for us.

Reading through this, one can't help but feel brow beaten by someone eager to show how much more scholarly he is to us. I'm sure that was not St. John's intention so let's hope his message is eventually simplified for mass digestion instead of the indigestion this version promotes.

5 out of 5 stars The "classic" of understanding spiritual union........2006-03-11

St. John of the Cross wrote the Dark Night of the Soul in the mid-sixteenth century. It has as much validity as a sort of "road map" to entering the spiritual union now, as it did then. His approach is a testimony to the timeless journey of one's soul to it's Creator, God. Fr. Thomas Green, S.J., uses it as a basis for his Spiritual direction and his books on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Cultivating Our Appetite for God.......2005-09-15

"The Dark Night of the Soul" continues St. John's "Ascent of Mount Carmel" in which he speaks of various nights:

1. The First Night: Purgation of the sensual part of the soul,

2. The Second Night: Purgation of the spiritual part of the soul,

3. The Third Night: Purgation of the activity of the soul, and

4. The Fourth Night: Purgation of the soul with respect to passivity.

The first three nights teach Christians how to deny and purify themrselves with the ordinary helps of grace, in order to prepare their senses and faculties for union with God through love.

The first three nights can, to some extent, be done in our human activity. However, on our own, we cannot prepare ourselves for Divine union in the perfection of love apart from the purging of the dark night of fire. The dark night is a passive night in which God accomplishes the purgation based upon our human incapacity.

Building upon this foundation, St. John states his plan: "An exposition of the stanzas describing the method followed by the soul in its journey upon the spiritual road to the attainment of the perfect union of love with God, to the extent that is possible in this life."

Thus his purpose is to describe the stages that God moves us through, and we move through, as we encounter increasing depths of intimacy with Him.

For St. John, sanctification requires the death of self-sufficiency. "In order that the interior motions and actions of the soul may come to be moved by God divinely, they must first be darkened and put to sleep and hushed to rest naturally as touching all their capacity and operation, until they have no more strength."

He is teaching that the dark night is the process by which God destroys the fleshly capacities so that these habituated vestiges of the old person are uprooted. Then the light of Divine love enlivens the new capacities. In fact, in places he implies that our human capacities are replaced with Divine infused capacities, not just renewed human ones.

What is healing and health for Saint John? "For the soul is now, as it were, undergoing a cure, in order that it may regain its health--its health being God Himself." God brings health by killing the appetite for delectable but non-nutritious things and creating an appetite for Himself.

The goal of the dark night is total assimilation in the Divine Essence, to be absorbed in the center of the flame of God's love.

Modern readers expecting an easy-to-digest recipe for intimacy with God will likely starve or be turned off by the richness of the food and the depth of the imagery. Though a classic, "The Dark Night of the Soul" will not be the best choice, and certainly not the first choice, for most people in the beginning stages of their spiritual journey.

Readers should also be aware that the way the term is often used today is not exactly what St. John had in mind. Writer's today tend to mean "spiritual depression" when they talk about "the dark night of the soul." By "spiritual depression" and by "the dark night of the soul," modern writers are talking about the emotional experience of the absence of the felt presence of God. St. John meant this, but much more. For him, the dark night was about absolute despair leading to absolute dependency. The emotional, mood component was secondary in St. John's thinking. The spiritual, relational component was primary.

Book Description

Americas favorite pediatric experts turn their attention to the hottest topic in parentingsolving babies sleep problemsin a definitive book that offers immediate results. For every parent whos ever been deprived of sleep by a restless infant or toddler, now theres hope. This much-needed addition to the Sears Parenting Library is the comprehensive, reassuring, solution-filled sleep resource that virtually every American family will want to own. Nighttime separation anxiety, new breastfeeding habits, and an increase in adult sleep problems have made babies sleep habits a growing concern in recent years. The Searses offer solutions. Instead of espousing the kind of one-method-fits-all approach advocated in other parenting books, the Searses teach parents how to match the nighttime temperament of their baby to their own lifestyle. The authors draw on important new infant sleep research from the Mother-Baby Sleep Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame, as well as on their own personal experience as parents of children with a wide range of sleep habits. They also offer a detailed critique of the myriad new devices and ballyhooed techniques that promise to deliver safer and better infant sleep. THE BABY SLEEP BOOK provides parents with the practical tools they need to help the entire family sleep better.

5 out of 5 stars How to respond lovingly to your baby and help both of you get some sleep.......2007-09-27

In a society where new mothers are probably asked more often if their babies are sleeping through the night than anything else, it becomes a mark of pride among some people to boast that they have gotten their 2 week old to sleep, or an issue that creates a lot of stress.

Dr Sears rebuts the arguments in favor of crying it out, presenting compassionate ideas for getting some sleep, and explaining the importance as a human being of responding to the cries of the new little helpless person in your life, instead of conceiving of them as a scheming, manipulative devil in a onesie. He is well-acquainted with the nuances of sleeping (and wide awake) babies and advises accordingly.

If your major concern is sleep, this book (by itself) may help, but probably is more helpful if you are already familiar with Dr Sears.

5 out of 5 stars So grateful.......2007-07-12

I feel fortunate to have found this book. As a mom who is expecting her second child, I had followed my instinct with my first child - who was not the best sleeper. I felt bad hearing and seeing others have such an easy time. At the same time, I second guessed myself thinking maybe I went about things in the wrong way. Reading this gives me more tools, resources and confidence to go with my instincts.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Sleeping Tool.......2007-06-05

Thank you Dr. Sears! My son and I (and husband too) are all sleeping better. I took his advice and started napping with my son (he has plenty of other suggestions, but this was most fitting for us). It took awhile, but he now naps on his own and doesn't wake up at 30 minutes like he used to. I miss my naps a little, so we still co-nap on occassion...but now I can do laundry, dishes, email, etc. while he sleeps if I want to. YAY! My husband read the section on co-sleeping and decided it was something we should do...I didn't need any convincing...we're all sleeping together and waking up well rested!

3 out of 5 stars On the Fence..........2007-05-18

I have very mixed feelings about this book, especially since I have had it for about a year, am 25 weeks pregnant with #2, and have a 19 month old who STILL wakes up multiple times per night.
Since Emma came home from the hospital, she was pretty clear that she was going to be difficult about sleep, so it was easy for me, naive and worried about EVERYTHING, to fall into Dr. Sears AP approach to nighttime parenting. I took on the sole responsiblity of parenting her to sleep b/c I honestly believed I was the only one who could. She was breastfed, and while I think it is impractical to try not to let a breastfeeding baby fall asleep at the breast, I definitely think that we could have modified our methods to allow more Dad interaction. Some of the reviewers have said basically that this is a mom-centered book but that isn't entirely the case. He does have a whole chapter on dads and how they can get involved at night and with sleep. I just didn't want to let her cry at ALL and being with Dad made her cry.
In the early days, when babies wake up all night, co-sleeping did seem to help with sleep deprivation, but I wish that I had been more adamant about her sleeping by herself sooner. I have a book on breastfeeding by Janet Tamaro, and she makes the point in the section about sleep/nighttime that any habit can be broken, but it will take time.
The naptime strategies help; I do have a very good napper. Her nighttime habits just haven't really matured. And I do respect the fact that children sleep differently, but I need help, not someone to tell me that over and over. The Drs. Sears do say that if something isn't working for you it needs to be fixed, but I wish there were more solutions instead of what seem to be general suggestions.
Okay, I now have Dr. Weissbluth's "Healthy Sleep Habits Healthy Child," and Emma now sleeps through the night (11-12 hours) with not a peep out of her. I totally recommend his book. It took three days and she was sleeping like she NEEDS to. Cheers!!

4 out of 5 stars Found this book very usefull.......2007-05-08

I was very against putting my baby asleep using the 'cry it out' method. This book justified my beliefs and gave very good reasons why that method is not effective. It gives good tips on getting baby to sleep on their own without causing them undo distress. I was able to take what I could use from this book and use if effectively on my son.

5 out of 5 stars Many excellent photographs.......2002-01-31

This is a beautiful book with great reproductions of Kenna's excellent black and white photographs taken in the 1980's in low light/night light, as the title says. Slow speeds to pick up the light at night also catch the clouds moving in the sky and convey an eerie feeling. Here you will find some of the photographs that make Kenna's phototography thrilling. Smokestacks in a powerstation in Nottingham with light that seems luminescent; pictures of the sea where water and clouds move; white poles and white steps glimmer in the dark; industrial landscapes are captured spendidly. Although these are landscapes there is a definite feeling of movement, and it is that movement that lures me to these photographs time and again.

4 out of 5 stars Images Like Haiku Poetry.......2001-06-25

Summary: Night Work is filled with haunting scenes of "evocative and mysterious places" that will fill your dreams. Michael Kenna uses the varying degrees of normally occurring darkness, light and contrast that night brings to create shifting moods of abstract beauty. Anyone who has been out walking alone at 3 a.m. will immediately recognize the inherent stillness and loneliness of these moments. Stop and take a deep breath, and the same moment turns into ethereal beauty . . . as these images testify.

Review: Ghostly illusions are the essence of Mr. Kenna's work. Our reactions to abstract shapes and normal objects shift as the shadows lengthen, and greyness pervades the scene. In the absence of people, these scenes also evoke the loneliness and alienation of modern life. Mr. Kenna has a way of showing juxtapositions of nature and man-made objects in a way that puts mere humans in their place, temporarily above ground before the mortal coil is shed.

The best of this work is truly stunning, and there are many superb images here. But the majority of the work just missed for me. Either the degree of fuzziness of the objects was too great, or the images were too faint, or the light source overpowered the scene, or the composition needed cropping. It's too bad because the concept of this work is very strong, and the results are almost right in virtually all cases.

Bill Brandt is the strongest influence on this body of photography, which Mr. Kenna describes as an invitation to "slow down" and to experience like "haiku poetry." I thought that both references were apt.

My favorite works in the book included:

This Tree, Cracow, Poland, 1989;

Above the Abreuvoir, Marly, France, 1992;

Abre Agite, Mont Gros, Nice, France, 1997;

Swings, Catskill Mountains, New York, 1977;

Pont Neuf (merci Brassai), Paris, France, 1992;

Bill Brandt's Snicket, Halifax, Yorkshire, England, 1986;

Beach Path, Hastings, Sussex, England, 1984;

Wind-Swept Beach, Calais, France, 1989;

Docking Poles, Venice, Italy, 1980;

Draped Boats, Whitby, Yorkshire, England, 1986;

The Rouge, Study 95, Dearborn, Michigan, 1995;

Chapel Cross Power Station, Study 2, Dumfries, Scotland, 1985;

Lagoon, Study 1, Blackpool, Lancashire, England, 1992

Sea Stones, Monterrey, California, 1992;

Nocturne, St. Malo, Brittany, France, 1993; and

Log and Plane, Boca Raton, Florida, 1992.

As you can see from these examples, his geographical and subject tastes are broad and varied. His work with power supplies is unusually poetic, making the tall cooling towers look almost like Monet's grain stacks in some ghostly images.

After you examine these long-exposed images, I suggest that you think about which aspects of night are most moving for you. What emotions do you like to have evoked by night? Why? What locales work best for creating those feelings? How can you use night to inspire and inflame your creativity instead, as Mr. Kenna has done?

Sway to the heavenly music of the night!

2 out of 5 stars the steps are backwards.......2007-06-28

ok, so for the most part this book isn't that bad. but it's backwards. one page says I get sleepy the page after that says, Time to eat dinner. I would love the book if those pages were flipped. maybe we are the only family who eats dinner then get's sleepy and ready for bed.

5 out of 5 stars 1 yr old Granddaughter loves this book!.......2007-05-25

I purchased this book for my granddaughter and she just loves it. She asks her mom to read it to her several times a day. It has a nice rhythm to it and she loves the pictures of babies.

5 out of 5 stars Very cute, easy to read book.......2007-03-31

I bought this book for our 4 month old daughter. She seems to like it alot! Its quick enough to read with lots of bright and beautiful pictures of other babies. Its great for bedtime, or anytime.

5 out of 5 stars We love it!!.......2006-04-07

My daughter is 16 mo. she has had this book for a while and absolutely loves it!! She looks through the pages and points out all the babies. I was so excited to find it again, our first copy was from her pediatrician, and it is now hanging on by a few pieces of tape.

5 out of 5 stars One of My One Year Old's Favorites.......2003-09-30

When she was about a year old, my daughter wanted this book at bedtime--every night, night after night, for weeks. It briefly reviews a typical day, and then goes through a bedtime routine, step by step, with engaging pictures and easy to understand vocabulary. I think my daughter enjoyed the fact that the book reflected her own experience, and was in terms that she could relate to.

1 out of 5 stars So bad I couldn't finish it.......2007-06-08

I purchased this book after reading the great reviews. It is wordy, poorly written, and gives the impression the author is just making up sleep advice. The medical credentials of the author and the souces are suspect as well (the author lists GCFP after his name...what is that?). If you think yoga may help you relax then this may be for you. If you are looking for a better written book from a scientific rather than spiritual perspective I would recommend "The Insomnia Answer".

5 out of 5 stars Sleep at long last.......2007-01-09

I first came across this book at 3 am on another insomnia night and was impatient for a solution. I didn't want any more pills that made me feel drugged the next day. I didn't want any more useless sleep hygiene advice, which worked intermittently. I also didn't want to pay $2,000 for a sleep study that would tell me I needed more pills and better sleep hygiene! Having suffered from insomnia for eight years, I was ready for a real solution.

Two things caught my eye about this book. One, a large percentage of the reviewers were medical professionals who used the method in their practices. Two, the book suggested an approach that would actually relax the body and calm the mind, not drug it or try to control everything around it and hope it behaves. This was what I was looking for!

After trying the methods, I can confirm that they work spectacularly; however, I do have a word of caution on the methods. Follow the steps in the book as exactly as possible, and don't go on memory alone when first doing them. Doing them incorrectly--even slightly so--can give you poor results.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2006-05-19

This book is incredible! I was beginning to think that sleeping poorly was a result of getting older(I am in my 30s). Now I know that you can learn to be a good sleeper just like you learn other things! Read it and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Rescue remedy for sleep.......2006-02-13

These wonderful tecniques in the book were invaluable these last couple of weeks. My youngest son has been very ill with a virus that completely disturbed his sleeping. We thought it would change, but didn't, so I taught him some of the Mini-moves in the book and he was able to relax and finally get the much needed rest he needed for healing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-01-09

As a very tired single mother of two, I have been using this method for a few years. It changed my relationship with sleep. Recently my 8 year old had a very painful infection and was unable to sleep. I did some of the techniques with her as she tried to relax. It worked! We both got a decent nights sleep.
Thank you.
