Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent examples.......2007-09-19

This book gives practical, specific advice on improving your landscape painting technique. I especially like the illustrations. The paintings are beautiful and "fresh." Not your average landscapes. They inspired me.

4 out of 5 stars shadows.......2007-09-10

Great book Good information but Kevin seems to lose his separation of the lights and shadows in some of his demos in the back of the book He talks about it but then shadows start getting to light in value and too much detail. This could be from the reproductions of his painting

3 out of 5 stars Not as much "color and light" in this one........2007-08-11

Having read this author's previous book on putting color and light in your paintings, I was a little disappointed with this one---I expected more. The book was well organized, (had, once again, pages of stuff about selecting your brushes, etc.); the author set forth his view of a limited palette, and said that you needed to be excited about your painting---but I don't believe that he was excited when he wrote this. If he was, he didn't convey it well. Had a number of exercises, some reasonable, others only for the wealthy (use an entire tube of cadmium red light on your painting (That is, really thick!)

Anyway, having read through the book, I would not buy this book again --- that's the bottom line.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful instruction for the Plein-Air artist........2007-06-27

Kevin Macpherson gives thorough instructions in his book from colors used to composition. A beautiful book with many demonstrations. I would highly recommend to the beginning or advanced Plein-Air painter in oil.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" Resource.......2007-05-23

If you are an oil painter or even if you are a want-to-be painter, Kevin MacPherson's book is a terrific reference. Personally, I'm a Plein Air painter and Kevin is a master at painting on location. He covers what supplies you'll need and techniques in painting. I've had this book for some time and still refer to it often.

Book Description

Planet earth, home sweet home

In the year 2000, world-renowned wildlife photographer Frans Lanting set out on a personal journey to photograph the evolution of life on earth. He made pilgrimages to true time capsules like a remote lagoon in Western Australia, spent time in research collections photographing forms of microscopic life, and even found ways to create visual parallels between the growth of organs in the human body and the patterns seen on the surface of the earth. The resulting volume is a glorious picture book of planet earth depicting the amazing biodiversity that surrounds us all. Lanting's true gift lies beyond his technical mastery: it is his eye for geometry in the beautiful chaos of nature that allows him to show us the world as it has never been seen before. From crabs to jellyfish, diatoms to vast geological formations, jungles to flowers, monkeys to human embryos, LIFE is a testament to the magical beauty of life in all its forms and is Lanting's most remarkable achievement to date.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing book!.......2007-06-08

If you are not familiar with Franz Lanting's work this is an amazing first book to buy. It is full of stunning photos of a close approximation of the earth as it once was.

As has been said it makes a great coffee table book but is also a great addition to any library. For all the nature and photography enthusiasts out there, here is a great intro!

5 out of 5 stars Lanting impresses again!.......2007-05-17

This is a wonderful book! The photographs are simply stunning and the layout of the book is great. This is an excellent sample of Lanting's work.

3 out of 5 stars High impact book, but..........2007-05-13

Definately an impressive volume. Big, bold and generally with superb pictures. Also a nice concept book- the pursuit of time and change through photos of life and its diversity. However, for a book of this production quality (and it's very high), I was surprised with the number and degree of colour enhanced images and the lack of interpretation - either of the subjects (and their relationship to the theme of time) or of the technical aspects of the photography and the story behind the photographs (for the photo nerds amongst us!). To be fair, Lanting does provide single paragraph descriptions for each photo, but these seem like an after thought enforced by the publisher. Maybe writing is not Lanting's thing, pity, because his photography is impressive. Alternatively, I might have bought the wrong type of book: If you want something visually stunning to leave open on the coffee table, then buy it- it was a better deal than that offered by shops here in NZ!

2 out of 5 stars Expecting too much!.......2007-04-28

Maybe I was expecting too much from this book based on a fairly excellent customer reviews at amazon. I maybe expecting too much cause because to my surprise, the book dealt with point and shoot aside from DSLR cameras. I was kind of disappointed with that. I own a Nikon D200 and a Nikon 105mm f2.8 macro lens to learn the art of macrophotography and to my surprise coolpix camera shots were there....honestly i was turned off with that! If you are expecting a purely DSLR macrophotography on this book you may have to look elsewhere! I felt that there was something missing in this book. I know some of you out there knows what I mean...it lacks some oomph!!

4 out of 5 stars Digital Nature Photography Closeup.......2007-04-02

This writer put some very nice photos into his book. He lists the camera and lens that he made the shots with but not the camera settings he used, which would be helpful to someone learning the art.

5 out of 5 stars This is a beautiful book.......2007-02-16

This book is exactly as it says on the back cover....A Complete Guide to Macro Digital Nature Photography. And well done. Well worth my investment.

3 out of 5 stars Polished, but basic.......2006-10-30

I've noticed a problem with specialized photography books: not enough specialized information. Digital Nature Photography Closeup is well organized, clearly written and very attractively designed with some striking photography. Unfortunately, more than half of the book is devoted to basic photo equipment and concepts.

What I've wanted - and have yet to find - is a book on macro photography that assumes I have basic or intermediate photo skills and want to extend them into a new space. The chapters of the book are:

- Equipment
- Camera features and techniques
- Light & Color
- Composition
- Flash
- Working with Histograms
- The Digital Darkroom

It could be the outline of almost any photo book - and much of the content in each is applicable to any photography, not macro in particular.

If you're relatively new to digital SLRs and have an interest in closeup photography, you'll probably get a full meal here. If you're beyond the basics, it's not much more than a light snack. Well presented, but not very filling.

3 out of 5 stars Digital Nature Photography Closeup.......2006-08-29

This book only covers the basics of macro photography and is suitable for 'newbies' at photography. Book and pictures are average quality. Experienced (macro) photographers should look further for technique and inspriration.

    Book Description

Since Antiquity, painters have sought to portray the glories of nature, and many of their pictures have become the best-known masterpieces in the history of art. In this sweeping treasury of Western art, distinguished art historian Nils Büttner has chosen paintings that not only portray natural vistas but also dramatic scenes with people and architecture. His broad selection of paintings in this genre consists mainly of well-known works, but some seldom-reproduced pictures are also included. The paintings are presented chronologically, beginning with the heritage from the ancient world and the precursors of landscape artists in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Giovanni Bellini, and Raphael. The sixteenth century heralded a new perception of the world, reflected in the works of such masters as Albrecht Dürer and Bruegel, as shown. Next, artists of the flowering age of landscapes in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are featured, including Claude Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin, Rubens, Rembrandt, Fragaonard, David, and Gainsborough. In the early nineteenth century, which was dominated by the spirit of Romanticism, artists began to display a new manner of treating nature. These revolutionary conceptions of nature are vividly presented with examples from Constable, Turner, Whistler, Frederic Church, Bierstadt, Thomas Eakins, and Winslow Homer. These artists are followed by plein-air painters, Impressionists, and Post-Impressionists, among them Manet, Monet, Sisley, Renoir, Cézanne, Seurat, van Gogh, and Rousseau. Artists represented from the twentieth century include Matisse, Picasso, Klee, Magritte, Georgia O'Keeffe, Andrew Wyeth, and David Hockney. Many of the extraordinary works are reproduced in full along with a detail and an informative caption.

In the authoritative text, the author traces the history of landscape painting up to the present day but also focuses on individual paintings and the circumstances under which they were created. Along with a description of a painting, the lucid text examines the work's cultural, historical, and aesthetic context.

The art of landscape artists, which has long been an under-published area of art history, is finally and stunningly revealed in this richly illustrated tribute to their work. This fresh vision of landscape artists is certain to be welcomed by art historians and museum-goers, as well anyone else interested in Western art.

4 out of 5 stars Good old fashion advice .......2007-09-03

Hamm's Drawing Scenery book was published in 1972, yet it is still full of useful advice to the artist today. As an author, he makes no assumptions about the reader's drawing skills, and gets right down to basics. This book is broad enough to be written for the general artist, whether you are an illustrator, commercial artist, or fine artists. While it has a slight comic book artist feel about it, the tips and advice are not limited to just comic book art. I've only taken one star off for its unusual layout - but then it was written BC (before computers).

5 out of 5 stars Classic good instruction.......2007-08-22

Hamm's How To books are really good. They dissect the shapes of things and show clear ways to draw them.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-08-15

I have loved Jack Hamm's books for years! As an artist, I am constantly looking for new books to try to hone my skills with. And while Jack Hamm's books aren't new, they have been a pivotal part of my self teaching in my skills. I have checked the books out of the library for years, and I would keep them until I HAD to take them back! (Darn!) So, I finally decided that it was time to buy a copy of "Drawing Scenery" for myself! I love it, and I will use it frequently! I love his style of teaching, he breaks it down for you in simple terms and shows you how it CAN be acomplished. I love this book!

    5 out of 5 stars Content-packed bargain!.......2005-09-17

Jack Hamm's three books "Drawing the Head and Figure," "How to Draw Animals," and this volume together form what I consider a complete course in commercial illustration but for color theory, which you can find in many other art books. Drawing well is the basis for every other art form especially in illustration.

This is the most difficult of those three volumes. Prepare to spend some time reading and studying it. I felt like I was back in college, and progressed through it one page at a time doing sketches on index cards with a soft pencil to test the ideas and theories he put forward -- and unlike many other art books I've read or classes I've taken, concepts like composition, balance, light and perspective made sense to me after studying this book. It's not a light read but it's so rich.

Jack Hamm's style is engaging but it's very content-dense. His books are the peak of the example-heavy content-rich concise style of art instruction. Step by step projects and long personal essays on technique and feeling aren't what Jack Hamm is about, although his style is engaging he doesn't seem to have the ego that many art instruction writers do. He doesn't claim his methods or compositions or styles are the best. He describes as many different ways to do things as they are and constantly encourages imagination, originality and personal style.

He distinguishes realism from artistic exaggeration and explains effectively why you can't just rely on a photo or even on what you see to create a good believable picture. I'm a writer who has spent a lifetime trying to learn self-illustration and his explanations have successfully broken some mental barriers like overdetailing, lack of focus, bad composition, inconsistent lighting. He encourages boldness and daring.

He has specific examples and details of everything I'd need to use in a scene, from clouds and waves to rocks and trees and houses. Most of all he shows how to create drama within a scene, no matter what the subject is it can be rendered a little bolder than life, it can convey emotion and tell a story.

I'd recommend this without reservation, order all three of them if you don't have them. All of these books have one quality in common. Even after they're read, they are great permanent references with examples of trees, waves, houses, styles of clouds -- the cloud chart pages are great -- so if I'm doing a drawing I can flip to the right section and get ideas for how to handle the sky or what I can do to make the gnarled tree look like endurance.

These books are the kind that will wear out from constant use and need replacing if you're at all fond of drawing, because there's always something new and interesting to find for any future artwork. This is why these classics are still in print. Check out the other two and consider his cartooning book as well if you have any interest in cartooning.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2004-07-15

The Dutch had Tulip Mania in the 17th century. Victorian England had its own equivalent with "orchidelirium," an obsessive passion for orchids that has carried into thepresent day. Orchids remain among the most beautiful, hotly debated, and passionately collected of all flowers.ORCHIDELIRIUM presents Harold Feinstein's breathtaking pictures of orchids--dozens of different varieties and shades of them. In the tradition of the critically acclaimed gift book One Hundred Flowers (Bulfinch Press, 2000), this new volume offers images of staggering detail and subtlety. Nobody has been able to match Feinstein's mastery of flower photography, and nowhere is his remarkable talent as evident as it is in these pictures oforchids, nature's most delicate and variegated creations.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A luminous book.......2007-08-23

This book is one of the best I've seen. There are some well written and well-organised sections dealing with the principles of composition, colour and stitching techniques. Gloria usually starts her landscapes with a painted background, so she gives a short well-illustrated section on fabric painting. Most of that stuff is available elsewhere, but it is assembled and illustrated particularly well.
The second half of the book contains details of her construction methods. One of those is using freezer paper on the right side of the fabric for appliqued shapes. The second - her signature style - is pieced sections on point, blended into the applique design. She gives clear diagrams
and inspiring examples of this technique. She then gives some examples of how to achieve different effects for trees, water and reflections. There is a gallery of student work, and two fully illustrated projects with paper patterns included at the back.
In my view this is excellent value, a perfect blend of practical tips and inspiration.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-08-11

If you love Gloria's quilts you will love this book. I have done two workshops with Gloria and it is very useful to have this book to put everything she covered in the workshops and more as a permanent resource. It is very detailed so is wonderful for people who have not had the opportunity to attend a workshop.

5 out of 5 stars love this book.......2007-07-10

I have several books on art quilting, and they all have their good points, but this book covers so much, I couldn't believe it. It includes, design, color theory, construction, fabric painting, special effects, material lists, and so on. The only thing it doesn't really cover is the use of printed commercial fabrics( there are other books out there for that). I was impressed by the clear instructions and photographs. It even has step-by- step projects in the back of the book and a large pull-out pattern sheet. This book has been an excellent addition to my quilt book how-to/reference library. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Luminous Landscapes to anyone who is looking for a concise, clearly illustrated book on quilt making with an artistic flair. Great price too!

    Book Description

Thirteen essays on landscape photography by master photographer Alain Briot. Topics include practical, technical, and aesthetic aspects of photography to help photographers build and refine their skills. Also covered is how to be an artist in business.

Alain Briot is one of the leading contemporary landscape photographers. He received his education in France and currently works mostly in the southwestern part of the United States.

This book starts with the technical aspects of photography; how to see, compose, find the right light, and select the best lens for a specific shot. It continues by focusing on the artistic aspects of photography with chapters on how to select your best work, how to create a portfolio, and finally concludes with two chapters on how to be an artist in business.

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing perspective that may change your life.......2007-08-16

I own probably 40 books on photography. All were well researched before purchase, so all are good books. Of the 40, 10 were very valuable, 10 more were worth reading, the the other half were not. This is the first that I read cover to cover in just a couple of days. Some mentioned there is not a lot of information in the book. Well, it's not filled with tips and tricks and specifics of how to use a tool or camera. It's more a book on how to approach and think about fine art photography, than how to do it. Meaning you will learn what directions to head in, and be given exercises that if you do them, will help get you there. There is a lot of information about subjects many gloss over, and that lead to a lot of thought and introspection. At least it did for me. Some will say the book is too simple. To me, the simplicity is it's strength. The messages are clear. I took away the sense these are the right concepts to think about to be better at this craft.

Briot makes the point that even in todays apparently saturated market (my words, not his), there is room for hard work, quality, and a clear focus to lead to a successfull business. If that's where you want to go. He makes the point that no matter what you do, to do it well will be a lot of hard work. That's just the way it is. So if that's the case, why not work hard at something you love or really want to do? Rather than work hard at something that will pay you to do what you love in your 'spare time'. I've learned the spare time usually doesn't happen. I've read these words before, as I'm sure you have. But this author makes the point in a way I, at least, related to more than any other author. There are whole books about that one subject, actually. But Alain spends a good chapter on it, in the context of a book on how to approach being a fine art photographer. So that chapter was long enough to say something meaningful, but not so long you lost interest and forgot what the message was about in the end. Each chapter fits that mold. Long enough to convey exactly his message. And no longer. That's why the book held my interest to the end.

Those are not the only insights I got from the book. There were many. They're just the ones I believe will be most important over time for me personally. Many will say "that was obvious, you just didn't get it". That's true of just about anything you want to discuss. Some have already gotten it. Some will get it now. Some may never get it. The measure, to me, is how effectively this book conveys concepts to me that are clear, and that I can take away how I can use them in my own life or work. This book more than any other, gave me a lot of that kind of insight. And most of what he says applies to any endeavor, so whether you're a photographer or not, you'll get something from this book. Possibly I was just ready for his message. It doesn't matter. This book did it for me.

So I have to thank Alain Briot for his insight, and for taking the time to write a book that conveys it clearly and deeply. His writing and his photographs are both examples of how deeply he cares about what he does. They're also clear examples of what dedication to a few things you choose to care about deeply can bring.

    5 out of 5 stars A Master Has Spoken.......2007-07-25

Alain Briot has taken great pains to write a book that goes beyond any other Landscape Photography book. His approach is concise; his ability to communicate the message of "light" will serve as an inspiration to everyone who reads this book.

This is not a simple "how to" book.....It's a book with valuable information. "Let there be light"....Mr. Briot teaches us how to interpet light and develop our creativity. This is a must read book for all serious landscape photographers!!

    1 out of 5 stars Very Wordy - Doesn't Say Much!.......2007-07-14

I was initially offered this book sometime back when it was much more expensive. After seeing it on Amazon considerably cheaper I decided to purchase the book.

I was under the impression by the title that it would cover off on technical and artistic recommendations for landscape photography.

I found the book to be relatively well written, however, very wordy! The author is not succinct and to the point, but rather very long winded. Much of the text is repeated throughout the book as the writer becomes sidetracked - yet again. Therefore, approximately 30% - 50% of the book is extra words and duplicated information. Furthermore, the images in the book do not teach you anything. Many of the images are duplicated in each chapter.

The book is divided into roughly two sections - technical aspects and artistic aspects relating to landscape photography.

I found the technical aspects to be a little lacking. If you are already versed in the basic technically knowledge of photography, you do not require this book. Everything written can very easily be gleaned form other "free" sources. If you are searching for technical aspects - purchase another book.

Art by it's very nature is highly subjective, and it's very difficult to put into words as this author has demonstrated. There are literally pages and pages in which nothing is actually stated - just "mumbo jumbo". Briot goes on endlessly about his success and the reasons for his success. Although interesting in its own right, the book is a photographic book on the technical and artistic approach to landscape photography - not an autobiography! When reading his book I kept thinking to myself, when will it end, what is this guy trying to say, when will he cease to `blow his own horn".

Many reviewers have mentioned that the book was inspiring, and I must agree with them. Briot makes you want to "get out there and give it a go". But this is what autobiographies do - inspire. I bought the book for information which is sourly lacks.

I have a PhD in earth science which focuses my thoughts to the technical side of photography (science is basically technical). I often feel I lack the artistic side required to make images which is why I bought this book. Unfortunately, the book did not convey the information advertised. After reading the book a month ago, all I can remember is the author's personal history. I should be remembering photographic points - not whether he lived in France, Arizona or Colorado, or whether he hired a removal van for 3 days or 6 days, or whether he moved into a house with 3 or four rooms!

I'd suggest borrowing the book from a library rather than purchasing it.

I rate this book as follows:

    Readability 2/10
    Information 3/10
    Biography 9/10
    Imagery 3/10I

    1 out of 5 stars Boring.......2007-07-06

I read or rather ploughed through Briot's essays when they appeared on the Luminous Landscape website. I kept thinking 'when is he going to say something?'. I look at his photos and wonder why he is considered by anyone as a top landscape photographer.

If you want a really good education and wonderful photos, I highly recommend Working the Light by Joe Cornish. It is a stunning collection of photos, many of which glow with light. The writing is straightforward with lots of valuable suggestions for the landscape photographer. A winner.

5 out of 5 stars Creating art with your photography.......2007-06-14

Although there are alot of great books that teach the range of photographic skills from camera usage to Photoshop to composition, this is the first book I've found that helps you discover how to create your own unique art with your photography. While these essays do go into topics such as exposure and lens selection, what sets them apart are the discussions of how to go about creating images that reveal your individual expression and personal vision. Practicing photography is not just about creating better images...it's about creating *your* images, and this is what Alain focuses on in this book.

3 out of 5 stars Nice book to buy but .......2007-08-23

Its a nice book but if you already have the other book from Gordon Mackenzie, I wouldn't recommend it. Basically half the book almost has the same things.

If you don't have any book from him.... its a nice buy. you will enjoy reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Fine book to learn from, if you will practice........2007-08-09

I bought the "Watercolorist's Essential Notebook"(WEN) and this "WEN - Landscapes," fearing they would be the same with a few different illustrations. (I was specifically looking for ideas on mountains). I was surprised that the first 20 pages contained the same material, but presented with landscapes theme. The rest of the book had many ideas and suggestions, not just rehashed WEN. There was enough new material to warrant this purchase. I should keep trying the presented techniques, but there was enough to satisfy my desire. For less than the cost of a lesson (I consider shipping/handling the same as using my vehicle to drive to the lesson) I have hours of experimenting ahead of me. The illustrations of the effects of each technique are very good, and the "step by step" illustrations aren't cookie cutter recipes, but suggestions for your own experiments. As a "new watercolorist" (meaning I haven't sold anything yet, but I am at the point of feeling I now could), I was surprised at how well I took to, and how much I learned from, both WEN books. I would say suitable from the start for beginners, and advanced students to working.

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or advanced, if you paint you NEED this book!.......2007-07-13

I was so pleased with this book that I bought the author's previous one, "The Watercolorist's Essential Notebook" and was just as happy with it! I learned so much from this book, and still continue to learn from it. I consider myself a beginner as I have only been studying watercolor for less than a year, but I took it to class and showed it to my instructor. She was so impressed by it that she bought it to use in her classes. Even with an MFA, she found information that was new to her. The author has a wonderful, playful style that makes learning exciting and fun. Whatever your skill level, you owe it to yourself to own this book!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners and all.......2007-07-12

Mr. MacKenzie shows techniques which all can utilize. I have been doing watercolor paintings for about two and half years with some success. I find his suggestions a great help. He is precise and forthright in his endeavor to share his artistic techniques with each reader. It's a great book.
