The perfect reference to start with FEM.......2007-03-12
Dr. JN Reddy's "An Introduction to the FEM" serves as a stand-alone and all-inclusive reference text. After reading the first two chapters, I felt perfectly comfortable with the logical sequence by which ideas and methodology of FEM are presented. The author has delivered the analysis of 1D problems in an easy-to-follow manner i.e. from bar, truss, beam and frames before proceeding to the time-dependent problems. His FEM1D program proves to be an effective, academically driven tool to apply the fundamentals of finite element analysis to computer.
a very good book.......2003-08-15
I learnt FE from this book. It is clear, coincise, full of well-worked examples. It covers almost all of the aspectes of FE programming. The book contains two educational codes, thought both are FORTRAN77 code, one can easily understand what's going on, so as to rewrite it in C or, say, FORTRAN90.
The first s chapters of the book regard the FEm method in general, the 4th focuses on structural mechanics, 5th is about errors in FE analysis, 6th and 7th about numerical integration and 8th is on 2 and 3 dimension FE problem.
Actually this is an introductory book, so the 2 and 3 D problems are not deeply trated.
The book is never hard to understand, and it's suitable (waw!!) for self study.
It is one of my best list........2002-05-05
Just completing his second and third chapter in FE formulation, you cannot deny Dr.Reddy's ingenius in FE. His solid background in Variational Calculus will enlight you the real nature of Finite Element approximation and bring you understand how can fomulate FE statement from BVP. Don't be bored in his mathematical written styles, because you could not understand FE in other ways. Absolutely, this book is one in my best list of FE textbook. His enlightment could not be found in a plenty of FE textbooks sold in your bookstore. Just read it!!! You may think like me.
THE BOOK.......2002-02-11
This book is a nice starting point for FEM modeling.I have had experience with contol volume and finite difference and am trying to catch on FEM.It helps me where i need help. There is this other
book by Schaums that complements this book. He goes into finite elements from the very basic engineering calculus. This book taught me finite elements. And i have published in FEM since. Quite a few papers as a matter of fact.
I have bought a second book on Finite Elements authored by him. I am in love with the book. The mathematical formulations....the very fact that it looks so abstruse that is the reason i love it..clarity of thought i respect like mad! And he has it all!!!
One of the Best Textbooks in FE.......2000-11-23
Not only was I introduced to the infinite world of Finite Elements through this book, but I have also used it in the FE class I teach at UCSD. I have found the variational formulations approach most helpful as it fits anyone in the various disciplines of engineering and applied mathematics. "Give me the field equation and I shall develop the FE model" is the motto I have used to build a career in FE; and Dr. Reddy's Book was certainly the cornerstone. OK..I am biased...Dr. Reddy was my doctoral advisior; he is the best in the business.

Book Description
An introduction to maritime prints, drawings and watercolours which is written for experts and enthusiasts alike. The text includes a historical survey tracing the development of marine art and exploring the technique and subject-matter of the pictures.
Although the most famous seventeenth century Dutch maritime painters are covered, the author concentrates on lesser known (and less expensive) works from 1800 onwards that are readily available to the collector. The book addresses important questions about maritime drawings and prints, from the subject and location to larger questions of connoisseurship.

Too Little information.......2005-12-03
We are a SolidWorks and Pro/E engineering heavy equipment company located in Ohio. I have a strong Pro/E background with a Mechanical Engineering degree, and I am trying to learn SolidWorks. SolidWorks seems like a great design tool for many applications.
I picked up a used copy of this book, "Introducation to Solid Modeling Using SolidWorks". I was very disappointed in the lack of functional information in the areas of: general features, creating Drawings, implementing Mates and Relations and generating Assemblies. The book is poorly written and I would not recommend it to anyone, at any level looking to learn SolidWorks. In the last review, it was written, "Howard deliberately does not explain all the methods in SolidWorks. To minimize information overload on you." I wish he provided more information and let me be the one to decide on information overload!
get started quickly on modelling.......2005-08-08
Autocad is the dominant CAD package, in market share and mindshare. But Howard shows that SolidWorks is perfectly capable of doing much the same tasks as Autocad. The modelling is intuitive. And much thought has clearly gone into the deployment of the user interface. The numerous options available to you should not prove overwhelming. Though perhaps that might be the initial impression, as you start the book.
Howard deliberately does not explain all the methods in SolidWorks. To minimise information overload on you. SolidWorks can certainly do far more. But here you can swiftly learn the most common methods and start designing.

Art Basics at its best.......2007-03-12
DK books are always a "best buy" when it comes to bringing clear, concise information on how to do almost anything.
An Introduction to Art Techniques.......2007-02-19
The book is in wonderful shape! My daughter needed it for a college class so the price helped her out a lot. I am an art teacher and was very impressed with it. I told her when she is finished with it she needn't pay me back...just give ME the book.
It's not a bad book...........2007-01-07
I had to get this for school. It's not a bad book and certainly is useful. I flipped thorough it to get some ideas.
I've seen books like these on clearance at book stores, so I think paying full price for this was silly.
An Amazing Value.......2005-12-16
We bought this for our 14-year-old nephew, who is just starting to exhibit an interest in art. It is truly a great introduction to drawing and perspective, painting (oil, watercolor, acrylics), and even mixed media. Don't expect great depth in any one area, but its easy to read and use, heavily illustrated to keep kids' attentions, has a nice glossary. All in all, a really really great value and a book that is exactly what its title says it is.
I love this book!.......2004-05-27
I have been a painter and drawer for many years. At my relatively young age of 25, having earned a BFA in painting and painting professionally for several years, I still fall back on this book for new ideas or refreshening on old ideas.
My mother bought this book for me in high school. For many years, I rarely opened it. However I have found that I still reference the techniques presented in this user-friendly book quite regularly. It is a wonderful reference to have on hand.
The reason I am writing this review is because I am going to buy this book for a beginning artist friend who has had very little formal art education. I recommend this book for experienced artists as well as beginners.
Hope this helps someone out there!
Enjoy! Ciao.

Just Fabulous-bought another copy after I wore the 1st out!.......2001-05-14
Great graphics, imaginative design, fabulous period reference. Outstanding in every way!
Quaint text and dynamite illustrations of original fashion.......2000-06-08
Vogue editor Diana Vreeland once said that no one in the 20th century had a greater influence on fashion than Erte, this desite the fact that he worked for a competitor, Harper's Bazaar. That's an indication of just how revolutionary his work was for the times. Working with virtually no direction to blunt his creativity, Erte published paintings and sketches of ingenious fashions that are as playful and lighthearted as they are luxurious and exquisite. He envisioned modern women (from 1915 to 1926) as goddesses, ultra-chic stars, children of nature, and totally feminine creatures to be adored and exalted. His fashions reflect this, individualistic and charming, colorful and startlingly functional. The 8 color covers and many B/W illustrations show insight into a dimension of fashion that one normally sees only on the show runways: the never-ending well of creativity brought to life by a truly inventive mind unhampered with concerns of marketability. Peruse the illustrations and notice allusions to gardens, paper-weaving, architecture, tennis, various members of the animal kingdom, ceremonial draperies, sailing ships, and flames. Dresses, coats, masks, swimming costumes, sleepwear, and gowns all ornamented with beads, fur trim, sheer draperies, corded lacings, silver embroidery, leather and straw. Practical? Not really. Mass manufacturing? Not in a million years. This is extreme fashion, the stuff of couture, such as would be worn to the salon of writers and intellectuals. Erte loved best to design for the stage, and the drama and fantasy of theater is in evidence in each ornate illustration. Although for 3 years he produced designs for Altman and Bendel in NY, most of his work was strictly conceptual, and many readers of Harper's saved covers and sketches to muse over as they would an art history volume, as evidence of another world. Ignoring fashion trends, Erte generated innovative and outre designs that still amaze and delight those of us who appreciate true originality. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in textile or fashion design, but also to graphic designers, sculptors, and those who really enjoy art for its own sake. This book is, in one word: luscious.

Extremely Infomative and Interesting.......1998-04-09
I found this book gives great insight to the way children think and react. So many books leave the reader wondering what was really meant at the end of the book, but this book gives great ideas into what children percieve about their famalies, etc. and how this relates into what they draw. I found this book very readable and informative. I really loved this book!!!

introduction to tribology.......2002-10-03
so far i have seen no textbook on tribology as good as this.
Book Description
There are two basic methods of recording astronomical images seen through the eyepiece of a telescope. Photography (these days, usually digital imaging with a CCD camera) is one, the other is sketching.
Astronomical sketching and drawing has a long and esteemed history. Many astronomers believe it is still unrivalled for recording and illustrating transient phenomena (such as TLPs) or for taking advantage of the fleeting moments of extreme clarity that result from the turbulent atmosphere through which Earth-based astronomers carry out all their observing.
Unfortunately, astronomical sketching and drawing is seldom taught as such, and is regarded by many amateur astronomers as the province of a talented few. This is not the case – the necessary techniques can be taught, just as portraiture and still-life drawing can be (and is) taught.
This book could become a classic.
