4 out of 5 stars A good variety of talented women.......2007-03-21

A really good selection of women involved in the graffiti scene, that documents a portion of each of their work well.
Altho their are a few obvious female writers that are missing from this book, like Misery, Diva or Barbara and Eva 62, the book generally covers a good selection of writers and has some awesome coverage of some of their work!
An awesome book highly recommended!

Book Description

Best-selling author Peter Sutherland's newest title, Pedal, is a wild ride alongside a band of New York City's most feared and respected inhabitants: bike messengers. In a book of photographs and a documentary on DVD, Sutherland follows the frenetic trips and lives of the cyclists who live by their own rules of the road. In Pedal, Sutherland documents bike messengers competing in the 2005 Cycle Messenger World Championships in New York City. Going straight to the center of this urban subculture, Sutherland serves up compelling portraits of the competitors from dozens of countries, in motion and at ease, checking out each other's bags, lingering over modifications to bikes and bodies. Between events like sprints, distance racing, and skid contests, Sutherland shows us the riders' elegant physicality, complex individuality, and unique community that crosses boundaries of race, gender, age, and class. And he doesn't shy away from the blood and bruises that come part and parcel with the messenger's life. Sutherland delves deep into the world of the messengers—a world usually seen from the outside—and returns with a dynamic document that evokes the unbridled anarchy and energy of its inhabitants. The accompanying DVD is a fast-paced documentary film about surviving in the streets of New York City as a bicycle messenger. It features messengers from all walks of life as they battle traffic in a race to make their next delivery on time. Directed by Sutherland and produced by Ana Lombardo, Pedal the documentary lets viewers live the spectacle of the delivery itself. It premiered in 2001 at the South by Southwest film festival, and was later acquired by the Sundance channel, where it aired until 2004.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Package overall.......2007-07-24

The photo booklet that comes with Pedal is a nice bonus as I originally purchased this for the documentary as I had viewed a couple clips of it on Youtube. Personally I always found the bike messenger "scene" as something very interesting and I found that this documentary gave one a good feel for it, but I will say that if you're not already interested in this topic the documentary is a bit short and not that engrossing.

4 out of 5 stars Review of PEDAL.......2007-01-15

It's an interresting document as it exposes this "counterculture" collective - bicycle messengers. The book is rather superficial with plenty of pictures and only four texts which vary considerably, ranging from contradictory-ragefilled-selfcentered-discourse to some interesting clearly depicting analysis. The DVD is great! Covering that cosmos: from the despatcher to the messenger, the bike races to the pedal driven task force in action.

Overall I rate it 4 stars, since it gets you acquainted to the NY messenger collective.

3 out of 5 stars Not as great as i thought it'd be.......2006-11-11

As a former messenger and current bicycle enthusiast, i usually enjoy any documentary or movie on being a bike messenger. I just exspected more from this one. Its kinda depressing at times (tho, being a messenger can be depressing at times so i understand). The packaging and book are nice tho.

3 out of 5 stars Don't Judge a Book by Its Photographer.......2006-11-10

Anyone familiar with the current art scene would jump to buy this and understandbly so with the names involved, unfortunately, it's a disappointment. I hate to slam it because I like Sutherland's work, but I was just hoping for so much more out of the documentary. Most of the interviews are boring (mainly because they last too long), there aren't very many messangers shown, there's nothing on the film about the CMWC, which could've at least provided him with more interviews, and there's only one messanger whose life is shown beyond the surface.

5 out of 5 stars PEDAL is powered by the NY city streets... deep in the funk........2006-08-10

This DVD is for all those interested in the subculture of bicycles, not just bike messengers or track bikes, but fighting for space with cars/taxi cabs, pedestrians and the police. This documentary is fast paced alongside those in the messenger (outlaw) community, and shows the true grit of the rotten apple. While the book has very little text, the small amount is amazing, and it is covered with beautiful pictures of roudy messengers competing in the Bike Messenger World Championships. A MUST BUY FOR ANY BICYCLE ENTHUSIAST. Definitely worth watching over and over again.

Book Description

Everything seemed to be going the Phillies' way. Up by 6 1/2 games with just 12 left to play in the 1964 season, they appeared to have clinched their first pennant in more than a decade. Outfielder Johnny Callison narrowly missed being the National League MVP. Third baseman Richie Allen was Rookie of the Year.

But the "Fightin' Phils" didn't make it to the postseason—they lost 10 straight and finished a game behind the St. Louis Cardinals. Besides engineering the greatest collapse of any team in major league baseball history, the '64 Phillies had another, more important distinction: they were Philadelphia's first truly integrated baseball team. In September Swoon William Kashatus tells the dramatic story—both on the field and off the field—of the Phillies' bittersweet season of 1964.

More than any other team in Philadelphia's sports history, the '64 Phillies saddled the city with a reputation for being a "loser." Even when victory seemed assured, Philadelphia found a way to lose. Unfortunately, the collapse, dubbed the "September swoon," was the beginning of a self-destructive skid in both team play and racial integration, for the very things that made the players unique threatened to tear the team apart. An antagonistic press and contentious fans blamed Richie Allen, the Phillies' first black superstar, for the team's losing ways, accusing him of dividing the team along racial lines. Allen manipulated the resulting controversy in the hopes that he would be traded, but in the process he managed to further fray already tenuous race relations.

Based on personal interviews, player biographies, and newspaper accounts, September Swoon brings to life a season and a team that got so many Philadelphians, both black and white, to care deeply and passionately about the game at a turbulent period in the city's—and our nation's—history. The hometown fans reveled in their triumphs and cried in their defeat, because they saw in them a reflection of themselves. The '64 Phillies not only won over the loyalties of a racially divided city, but gave Philadelphians a reason to dream—of a pennant, of a contender, and of a City of Brotherly Love.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars reliving a bittersweet time.......2006-06-05

As a 13-year-old Cookie Rojas fan, I thought '64 was finally the Phils' year. Everything was looking hopeful in Connie Mack Stadium. Kashatus does an admirable job of capturing that moment in time. His interviews with players from that '64 team are particularly interesting, as is his look at the managing dilemmas facing Gene Mauch--a man who probably overanalyzed things in the final weeks of the season: odd because Mauch was one of the all-time staunchest believers in basic baseball. But anything could happen in Connie Mack, as Phillies fans were all too aware. Kashatus tries to be impartial about the situation surrounding Richie Allen, and Kashatus successfully deals with the various facets of Allen's considerable talent and amazing '64 season, along with his unpredictable and sometimes problematic personality. To baseball fans in general, however, the most fascinating aspect of "September Swoon" is how mercurial the game can be, even when things are supposedly in the bag.

3 out of 5 stars Middle-aged Phillies fans should read this.......2005-09-21

Now that we're all older we can look back on this sad chapter in Philly sports with a bit more perspective. It's hard to stay mad at Richie Allen after you read this, especially if you aren't familiar with the story of his shameful treatment in Little Rock in 1963. If anything, you'll remember why you liked him in the first place. A decent read for a die-hard Phillies fan.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting look at the 1964 season and more.......2004-11-07

I thought this book was going to be just a day-by-day recap of the 1964 Phillies famous skid at the end of the season to give the NL pennant to the Cardinals, but it was much more.

Kasthaus does a good job of capturing the racial tensions of the time and he does give the Phillies management of the time a chance to respond to allegations of racism within the organization.

Ultimately, it is a book more about the relationship of Dick Allen with the city of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia press. Stan Hochman, who receives some severe criticism in the book, is not well-portrayed in this book, nor is Larry Merchant. However, neither man is interviewed for the book as Kasthaus states that no Philadelphia writer of the era returned his phone calls except for Allen Lewis.

5 out of 5 stars A professional baseball history.......2004-08-10

This archivally-bound, well-written book is a professional
historian's account of the season of the 1964 Phillies. It is
well illustrated with portraits of the major players in this
story. In 1964, I made a bet with my brother: that Richie Allen
would some day be considered as great as Mickey Mantle. We still
argue the comparison, but thanks to this book, I better appreciate
the reasons I may not have won the bet- yet. The book
ends with a well reasoned plea for Allen's admission to the Hall
of Fame, an appropriate move once "character" is taken fully into account.
This book will be enjoyed by baseball fans, students of the history of integration,
and the general reader, as insightful, well researched, and a
meaningful contribution to American social history.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read for Any Season.......2004-07-09

September Swoon, by William Kashatus has a vivid feel that hits home for me and probably would for anyone else who endured the historic end-of-season collapse that happened in what was later known in Philadelphia as "the year of the blue snow." Blue it was indeed for my then fifth grade psyche. I LOVED the Phillies. Johnny Callison was my hero and it seemed that 1964 was all going our way from the June 21st perfect game by Jim Bunning, to Callison's walk-off 3-run homer to end the All Star game to the six-game lead that the Phillies held in the NL before losing ten of their last twelve games. Just as true, though is the tragic career of Richie (later "Dick") Allen, the Phillies' Rookie of the Year third baseman. Race relations for me had little to do with baseball, the Phillies and every other team had always had colored players (at least to my awareness) and frankly, I hadn't given the matter any thought at all by that time. Like the author`s, my memories are of faithful listening to late night west coast games with a transistor radio under my pillow and the crackle of lightning-generated static cutting through the play by play of By Saam, Rich Ashburn and Bill Campbell.

But it is undeniable that Richie Allen came to be a figure inescapably linked to the racial boil-over that was occurring nationwide throughout the sixties. Intelligent and articulate, Allen later admitted to having been thrust reluctantly at first, into the role of baseball's poster child for black belligerence. The Philadelphia baseball franchise was notorious for its lily-whiteness until 1957, when it hired its first black player. These facts were unknown to a ten year old, but Kashatus artfully weaves the race scene that erupted into riots together with the baseball collapse that the Phillies suffered. A fight between superstar Allen and journeyman Phillies' player Frank Thomas in 1965 sparked a torrent of media, and consequently, fan scapegoating of Allen, who did little to pour oil on the troubled waters, opting instead for a Stagga-Lee in red pinstripes persona. If we were becoming modern, multicultural and tolerant at the time, it wasn't instantaneous, and a considerable amount of racially charged derision did certainly befall this tragic player, who had he been born ten years later, would surely have been a Hall of Famer.

In the end, neither the Phillies of 1964 nor Dick Allen got the prize they might have. The world has held together, I witnessed in person the Phillies' world championship in 1980, and life has continued on. But the hope and dreams that were mine along with so many others in 1964 would never come to pass. If the wheels came off for the Phillies in 1964, the event certainly coincided with the beginnings of a world so different and cynical by comparison, that it would have been unimaginable to most, regardless of color, at that time. There is no doubt that the racial strife of the sixties led to an accelerated timetable for the legal elimination of racism, but it is probable that the matter has remained uglier for much longer because of this hasty era of impatience and insistence. Dick Allen the man is just a man, he is not the cause of anything, not even his own fate. But he symbolizes a thought that is bestride the before and the after: What if things had gone differently?

September Swoon is a good read for any season. It's poetry and baseball, history and biography. It's a true story from the Birthplace of the Nation. Every so often, someone writes a book from the heart and so Kashatus has touched this heart many miles and years removed.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Russian Sleigh Ride.......2006-07-02

Martha Cooley is a great young writer. Those readers expecting "The Archivist, Pt. 2" will be in for a surprise. She takes us for a Russian sleigh-ride through modern relationships, as carefully composed as the overtones of scent that rise from the page. It is an elegant production; well-presented and seductive.

3 out of 5 stars Stand Back and Give it Some Air.......2005-08-14

Thirty-Three Swoons is a tightly constructed novel, but perhaps a little more space would have allowed Cooley's book to breathe. The narrative centers around Camilla Archer, a woman whose life has been put on hold by complicated relationships in life and death with her father, Jordan, and cousin, Eve. When the dream figures of Russian theater director Meyerhold and his mysterious doppelganger begin to manipulate her dreams and intrude on her decisions, she is brought into conflict with Eve's angry daughter Danny.

Cooley has a careful technique. She interweaves the lives of Camilla, Jordan, and Meyerhold in distinctive worlds, evoking the mysterious quality of perfumes and the theater, and making ties with them to memory and love. At times she has a lovely classical restraint to her prose, especially in descriptions that morph into themes: "And with the `orientals' - opulent scents such as amber and vetiver - Jordan created fragrances that were provocative without ever resorting to vulgarity...I think of Jordan's perfumes as secret passwords each wearer decoded on her own."

Yet Camilla's quest never grabs hold of your heart and pulls you along with it. The novel's basic conflict between children and parents is an old and tricky one, and Camilla's pent-up character gives little away. Less dialogue and description about the shop or what someone is wearing, and more about Camilla's emotional history with the people she loves would have strengthened the New York characters and Camilla's dilemma. Cooley's prose is powerful - sometimes it just needs to let loose and enjoy all the possibilities she has created for it.

5 out of 5 stars Passes the smell test.......2005-07-27

In very different ways, I found Thirty-Three Swoons as satisfying as The Archivist, Cooley's excellent first novel. The structure is more complex and inventive, with a variety of voices - dream narratives, soliloquies, and traditional narrative - sustaining that curiosity - and frustration at unresolved tension - that propels the reader forward. I see this difference between the two novels as evidence of the writer's sensitivity to the need for different languages and structures to fit different subject matters. I also found the olfactory thread that runs through the book very fresh and a nostril-opener. The strands come together in a satisfying and unpredictable way, and the prose is often beautifully turned. How lucky can a reader get?

    3 out of 5 stars A Moderate Disappointment.......2005-07-06

As a translator of the author's truly wonderful first novel "The Archivist" into the Estonian I was thrilled when the publisher of the translation presented me with Martha Cooley's next work. However, from the start of the omniscient doppelganger's monologue in the first chapter I was struck by the artificiality of its tone and puzzled by the purpose of including the Vsevolod Meyerhold parts in the overall composition. It feels over constructed and the alien voice inserted in the interludes disrupts rather helps to make the tale a polyphonic one as probably intended. The connection to Russia's Stalinist past and its victims is strained and hardly justified from the point of view of the rest of the story, which in itself is masterfully told. The best episode on this plane is Stuart's make-up séance with Camilla who, on seeing her transformed image in the mirror, is shaken into better understanding of her father ("A man of feeling, fully alone.") The descriptions of Jordan's perfumes also constitute some of the best parts of the book. Still under the spell of "The Archivist" I wish the author luck in her future endeavors despite my criticism.

5 out of 5 stars Business of living ..........2005-06-15

The perfume industry and theater make interesting backdrops to this haunting story. The heroine, whose parents are deceased dreams of her father as the business of living comes much too fast. An unforgettable novel.

What does it mean to be a woman—a lover, mother and artist? In Swoon, Redel tackles the question of Eros as it animates domestic life. These are poems unafraid to embrace the sweetness of difficulty and the difficult sweetness of intimacy. Using short and extended lyric, prose poem, circular narrative, Redel refuses formal categorization, demanding of poetry a complex and textured vision of the female experience. Swoon is a robustly sexy, intelligent, daring book of poems.

Victoria Redel has done it again. With her newest book of poems graciously entitled "Swoon", Redel has captured feelings and emotions one can only hope to receive once in a lifetime. I am familiar with Redel's other works "Where the Road Bottoms Out" and "Loverboy" (a fiction yet wonderously poetic novel) and I believe "Swoon" is her best collection of poems yet. We see Redel in her highest form and we feel her confidence and maturity in this latest title.
