Tiny pictures........2007-02-13
I think I was under the impression that this was a bigger book or something, but I wish it had bigger, better pictures. This is a paperback with lots more writing than pictures. Small pictures and not a ton of them. Decent book from what I've skimmed.
Escher in his own words.......2004-10-03
Maurits Escher, as an artist, needs no introduction. As a writer, however, he is not nearly well known enough. This short book collects some of his early writings from rather obscure journals, and presents a lecture that was never actually given.
Escher is well known for his precise renderings, and we are blessed with writing in the same precise style. He wrote out the script for his lecture in full, before it was to be given. That means that, when a medical emergency forced its cancellation, the lecture was preserved in its entirety. Like his geometric woodcuts and his precise lithographs, the calm of the text belies the passion that lay behind it. Escher spent decades in poverty before his well-earned fame, and pursued visions for which he had no good words and certainly no companions. That same drive was what pushed his skill as a woodblock artist down to the limits of his hands and his materials, below the limit of his unaided eye.
Although not trained in math or the hard sciences, he puts a human face on subtle mathematical concepts. The infinite and unbounded is a common idea, the finite and bounded is part of everyday life. These aren't his words, but he pursued the finite and unbounded, in tiled patterns on the surface of a sphere. He also sought out the infinite and bounded, and found it in the Cirle Limit pieces and other works.
This book is the only inexpensive and easily accesible source of Escher's own thoughts on his work. It's not a catalog of his work - most of the reproductions so small that they only suggest the piece depicted, or remind a viewer already familiar with the work. It's not a biography, although it has a few biographical details. People with the wrong expectations are sure to be disappointed in this.
I'm happy with it. It is a very enjoyable look at his cool manner of presentation. Like his Three Worlds litho, it presents a surface of meaning, but shows reflections of distant ideas and hints at his hidden depths.

Not as interesting as one would expect.......2003-07-29
I feel that this book seems, at first glance, to be much better than it really is. That is, when one picks up the book for the first time in a book store and flips through the pages, one gets the impression that it will actually be interesting to read, and will help in understanding Escher's genius. But really, the works themselves are the only things this book offers, the text is basically useless, shallow and uninteresting.
Casual Fan Book.......1999-12-21
This is a nice collection of Esher work for the casual fan not looking to spend a lot of dead presidents. THe book also has biographical information, ect
Book Description
Exploring Drawing for Animation is an innovative introduction to 2D animation and inspirational skill-sharpener for working professionals. The authors creatively link drawing techniques and life drawing -human and animal anatomy, architecture, and scenery- to 2D animation production and outcomes. The instructional format builds animation skills from the ground up, using a technical foundation in drawing as a basis for exploring animation. Overviews span the topics of sequence drawing, character development, motion, proportional techniques, and animation clean-up. Together, these essential skills combine to help readers develop the drawing skills necessary to be a successful animator.

So far off the mark, it's baffling.......2007-02-22
Have these authors ever done any animation? Have they ever SEEN any animation? This mostly contains carefully rendered fantasy drawings that you would never see animated. How they got this published is beyond me.
Good for starters.......2006-12-10
I bought tis book a few years ago. It has some good stuff of how drawing relates to animation. It also sheds more light on to the process than a lot of books. However, after a few years of animation art school, I realized how bad the drawings were. If you want to learn about drawing for animation, check out Glen Vilppu's books. (he worked as a drawing instructor/trainer at some of the bigger studios in L.A.)
Avoid this book, it's an embarrassment.......2006-11-20
Oh my, where to begin...
I posted some images of a few of the drawings from the pages of this book on the customer images link above. Feel free to take a look at those to see where I am coming from.
The authors of this book need a few drawing lessons themselves, though I'm not sure that would actually help, because they're beyond hopeless. The drawings in the book are beginner level, amateurish drawings and it's really sad to see that these guys are actually teaching students in an art school.
Aside from the obvious lack of personal drawing skill on the authors' parts, there is a lot of bad advice from an animation drawing point of view, like too much emphasis on measuring and copying the model and a completely misunderstood/misrepresented view of the all-important line of action.
Stay away from this book. These guys should be ashamed of themselves for putting this crap out there.
Its more of a very lengthy article than a book on 2d animation.......2005-12-05
I made the mistake of buying this book, and I would like to warn you guys please , please dont waste your money on this title...This book is nothing more than a long overview on drawn animation , It is not and I repeate it is not a how to book , although the authors have tried to present it as a text book, its no more than an introduction to animaton drawing ,the authors try very hard to explain drawing and go all blah...blah...blah....but they dont tell you what to do , whats mentioned in this book can be known via a simple search on the net.I would advice customers to buy a copy of, Vilppu Drawing Manual by Glenn Vilppu and Animation : The mechanics of motion by Chris Webster. These books are practicle , simple , cheaper and would prove to be a thousand times more useful to the animation student.
Excellent, fun treatise on animation drawing.......2005-06-30
I have worked as an animator, teacher and fine artist for over 30 years and this is the first art text I have ever seen that discusses how solid drawing skill relates to creating drawings for character designs and 2D animation. Most animation `how-to' books include some drawing instruction but do not address the important bridge between drawing and animation.
The authors present an entertainingly written book in an easy-to-read conversational tone along with illustrations that show the well-honed professional drawing and painting skills of this book's creators. It is obvious to the reader that the authors are seasoned artists and educators.
While this book is predominantly for learners of beginning to intermediate levels, anyone with an interest in the interdisciplinary issues within animation and drawing would benefit from picking up this gem of a text. Unfortunately, the title of the book suggests that it covers the technique of 2D animation in-depth, but this is a misnomer. Fortunately, 2D animation is commented on in a more important context: the development of effective observational drawing skills that will produce better animation drawings.

I teach Character design and this book leaves a lot to be desired.......2007-08-16
I hate this book. The drawings in it are usually really bad. They are trying way too hard to sound scholarly in places where it isn't necessary. I would only recommend this book as a door stop. "Creating Characters with Personality" is a much, much better, and more practical approach to character design.

One-of-a-Kind!.......2006-09-07
Exploring Colored Pencil is a unique and beautifully illustrated book. For those who have never been exposed to this medium, you will be amazed at the life-like drawings and incredible detail that can be achieved with colored pencils. Exploring Colored Pencil is truly a work of art and is jam-packed with history, techniques, illustrations and exercises for beginner(me), intermediate and advanced students. I learned how to blend colors and use different techniques and loved how the book was laid out in an easy to follow format. This book is a keeper.
Very comprehensive, easy to follow.......2006-06-16
This book covers the full gamut... from 8 different techniques to specific subjects like drawing animals, landscapes, still life and people. My favorite section is the one on faces where she gives detailed drawings that you can copy.
The quality of the art is breathtaking and there are so many different styles represented from artists of all ages.
It's neat that each chapter has lessons for various levels, beginners, intermediate and advanced students. I found the step by step illustrations and instructions very easy to follow.
This is a good follow up to her other books, Colored Pencil Drawing and So You Thought You Couldn't Draw. This books takes me to a whole new level.
I'd like to find the colored pencil videos that she mentions. I'm going to see if Amazon.com carries them.
An excellent guide for all aspiring art students with a particular preference to colored pencils as their medium of expression.......2006-04-03
Exploring Colored Pencil by Sandra McFall Angelo by Sandra McFall Angelo is a thoroughly "user-friendly" instructional guide to creating the most intricate, vivid and realistic visual art with colored pencils. Introducing the reader to experienced techniques with step-by-step demonstrations, methods for creating realistic textures, combining colored pencils with a range of media, exercises for beginner, intermediate, and advanced art students, colorful works illustrating diverse styles and applications, drawings by professionals and students of all ages, and many suggestions that will help the reader develop their own style, Exploring Colored Pencil is an excellent guide for all aspiring art students with a particular preference to colored pencils as their medium of expression.
Best book on the colored pencil.......2004-04-07
Hands down the best colored pencil book I've seen. I have over ten books on this topic including ones from Bet Borgeson and Janie Gildow and this is the best. In depth information is given on the history of this artform, practical considerations and technique. Throughout the book, inspiring works of art with colored pencil are displayed. This book is sure to enthuse the reader whether they are a beginner or advanced artist.
Not for the Beginner.......2003-11-23
If you want step-by-step instructions don't buy this book. While the blurb on the back touts "step-by-step demonstrations" they are a very small part of the book and have very few steps. If you are looking for something vague like "inspiration" then this book might interest you. It does have lots of pictures done both by students and professionals in a variety of styles. But if you want help with what kind of pencils to buy don't look here. There is a general discussion of pencil types (hard, soft, etc.) but no concrete examples of which is which. You are just told that price indicates quality. Paper/board selection is also vague.
If you already know a lot about colored pencil then you might enjoy this book, but don't expect a lot of help with the basics.

exploring life drawing.......2007-09-16
This book was written with careful attention to detail. It includes illustrations that demystifies the drawing experience. It is for the artist who is interested in learning and sharpening his or her skills. It gives step-by-step techniques for rendering a variety of figures in numerous positions in both loose and sketcky style to tight and detailed. I recommend this book highly to both the beginning artist and the experienced artist. Paula Hannah-Mauri
New Approach to Life Drawing.......2007-06-17
This book is very well organized and uses excellent examples, many by the hand of the author himself. The writing style is clear, straightforward, and quite informative. The author guides you step by step through the drawing process. The exercises at the end of the chapters are great, especially in the way they help you to develop your own individual style. This new approach to life drawing is very useful and long overdue. A must for any serious student of art!
wonderful book for developing you figure drawing style.......2007-04-18
If you are striving to develop a personal figure drawing style this book offers:
1. Clear, specific instructions for assignments and each assignment has a section on assessing the drawings produced in it.
2. Exploration of various kinds of life drawings: traditional and modern, without taking a stance on which one is better.
3. Many great visuals by a variety of figurative artists.
Finally, the definitive life drawing book.......2007-04-09
From my first life drawing course in college (30 years ago) until now, I have continually combed commercial and collegiate booksellers for an effective and definitive "teaching-and-learning style" life drawing textbook. Finally, there is one: Harold Stone's new "Exploring Life Drawing." Through easy-to-read text, classic and contemporary drawings, a wide range of styles and techniques, and a useful chapter by chapter review process, this book has it all. Best of all, it encourages the development of one's own distinctive drawing style.

Practical, classroom-tested instruction is at the core of this new introduction to basic drawing skills, written by one of the country's leading illustrators- a teacher admired as much for her ability to inspire students as for her artistic talent. Centered on the art of drawing still-life objects with charcoal, Exploring The Basics of Drawing presents a logical, step-by-step approach that not only gets results but also inspires readers to learn and excel. Thorough coverage of the fundamental skills needed to learn to draw includes still-life drawing, basic shapes, and the key concepts of perspective, light, value, and space. At the heart of the book are drawing projects that show step-by-step progress toward a finished drawing, giving readers the practice they need to build their skills and their confidence.

A first rate primer for learning the basics of observational drawing.......2005-10-10
I teach drawing at the college level and have seen a multitude of drawing books. All though many of them are very nice this is the first one I have ever been compelled to recommend. It may not have all the bells and whistles of costlier books but it explains the basics of observational drawing in a concise way that could be understood by beginning drawing students. The illustrations explain in a visual way what the author explains verbally and are easy to view and understand. This book would be the one to pick if you do not have an instructor and need to teach yourself. If you read the book and work from observation you will improve your drawing skills. I like the book so much I am selecting it for my students as the class text for Basic Drawing I.
If you are advanced drawing student and have the rudimentaries of drawing down then this may not be the book for you.

Exploring Pastel with Barry Watkin.......2006-08-16
Barry White has succeded in telling his reader, in a very understandable way, as much about pastels that one can learn from a book. He includes many examples of his wonderful work (usually to illustrate a point), as well as ample demonstrations (also illustrated, in a "step by step" style). His work itself is an inspiration.... just knowing that it's possible to do fairly detailed landscapes in pastel (that look like oil paintings) was exciting for me.
One of the best pastel books.......2003-08-02
It provides clear and simple instructions in using pastel to create beautiful paintings. Most of the instructions are focused on landscape paintings with a couple of flowers and still life. Basically, it is one of the best pastel books I ever had.

This is a solution manual for another book........2004-04-03
This book is just the answer to quizzes, questions, and a portfolio of what correct drawings should look like. No instruction for self learning. This book is just an instructor's resource. (only relates to ISBN 159070181X)
As a solution manual, however, it looks emphatically able for its intended role. There seems to be a related Text book and supplemental Worksheets that goes with this solution manual.
Rating is based on: there is no clue as to what the related books or materials are titled, ISBN, etc. Some hint would be useful.

Hooray for leaving the "Stay within the Line" mentality!.......2002-03-22
I would buy every young person I know this book if it were available. Creating and exploring in a young person is stiffled around age 6. I hear people say "I can't draw a straight line," or "I can't draw," or "I can't paint," and too bad their brain accepted teachers/parents lack of encouragement to color anything, draw anything, go beyond the lines. The Anti-Coloring Book of Exploring Space on Earth by Susan Striker should be given to every school child. The pictures are started, and the child/person is encouraged to complete from with descriptions like, "Would you like to live on a houseboat?", "Build a Treehouse where you can go and be alone," "Decorate this Dollhouse," "The people who live in this apartment have commissioned you to paint a modern masterpiece." "You are a scientist who has established a model community for life under the sea."
An exciting alternative to passive, mindless "art."
