Book Description

When Danny Gregory's life was turned upside down by tragedy, he learned to cope by teaching himself to draw. The result was a complete transformation of his life, his priorities, his career, and the way he saw the world. In handwritten chapters full of his lush watercolor illustrations, Danny now offers readers a program for reconnecting to their own creative energies, using drawing as an example. He gently instructs us in the art of allowing ourselves to fail, giving up the expectation of perfection and opening our eyes to the beauty around us. The result is the permission to express ourselves fully and take part in the creative process without fear. Artist or not, readers of all stripes will find inspiration in this unique and beautiful book.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for Drawing Inspiration.......2007-08-20

This was a good, inspiring book about drawing and the power it can have in your life. Mr. Gregory worked in advertising for many years and finally gave it up to become an artist, and began keeping sketchbooks as a way to grow. He gives lots and lots of examples and tips on what you can do yourself to enhance your creativity and draw more. His drawings are beautiful and for the most part his prose is very upbeat and made me want to get out there and draw.

I do have one quibble, though, and that's a tiny hint of snobbery in some of his text. For the most part he'll say "do your own thing" or "whatever feels right for you", which I think is the proper way to approach making artwork, but then he'll come out with something like, "only draw in ink" like there's something wrong with pencil. And "you have to go to New York because that's where it's at" which is utter nonsense for many people. This is the kind of thing that makes one think they have to do something a certain way, but to me making art is so personal that I think one should use whatever technique or style they wish.

That being said, I would definitely recommend this book for a good kick in the butt to get out there and get drawing!

5 out of 5 stars Making drawing accessible.......2007-07-07

This is my favorite book as an introduction to illuminated journals. I tried books on "visual" or "creative" journaling, but for me, I just can't connect with abstract blocks of color and shape as symbols of specific insights or emotions. I'm a writer, a words person, but sometimes words just aren't enough for me for capturing a moment. So I looked at other books on illuminated journals, but they're so beautifully rendered by talented and experienced artists that they were too intimidating for me.

Then I found this book. Danny Gregory is a little overlong at the start when he talks about the value of creativity in general. (If you've picked up the book at all, you probably don't need that much persuading.) But once you pick up a pen, he really gets going. He covers the basics of drawing, and I love his analogy linking learning to draw with learning to drive. I also like that he asks you to dare to make mistakes by using a pen instead of a pencil. He doesn't even have you use an actual "journal" at first so you can comfortable with drawing.

I also like that he keeps the book simple throughout. A lot of these types of books have you off to the art supply store with a *list* within the first 2 or 3 chapters. Here, all you'll ever need is a black pen, and maybe some color pens or thicker pens later.

I was surprised to learn that as drawing goes, I'm not all that bad, and I'm certainly good enough for my journals.

5 out of 5 stars A Review from Texas.......2007-06-28

I LOVE this book. I have dabbled at drawing but found it more work than pleasure. When I started reading Creative License I realized that it could be fun and relaxing. "Don't erase your mistakes" was a very liberating statement to me. Now I can't wait to see something that begs me to get my pen and paper out and DRAW!

4 out of 5 stars The Creative License.......2007-06-02

Thoroghly enjoyed it. Will start doing the exercises tomorrow. Simple and effective for the busy schedule.

5 out of 5 stars Encouraging.......2007-04-16

This book will either open your eyes to a new way of thinking about creativity or will serve as a confirmation if you have already headed down the path of self expression. Fun to read and lots of practice ideas included.

5 out of 5 stars Great Tool for Teaching Art.......2007-03-10

This book is a great way to get kids to realize that yes they can draw. It really gives great techniques and excercises that teach the basic elements of shape.

5 out of 5 stars Drawing out children.......2007-01-23

This book is amazing! It is perfect for children of all ages, as it talks about the drawing process, not just trail drawings.

It is perfect for the home school, or for kids whos school district does not have art any more.

It addresses the process of learning, and will help kids not only draw better, but do better in other subjects.

5 out of 5 stars Drawing With Children.......2007-01-11

This is an absolutely wonderful book. I was one of those who "could not draw," and after reading the book through and doing all the exercises, I now can draw anything I want. It breaks drawing down into small manageable pieces (the five basic shapes), and once you learn to really "see" things, you are able to break drawing different items down that way. I have "taught" my grandchildren to draw using this book, and they look it.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for teachers and parents!.......2006-10-07

This book is aimed toward parents and/or teachers. It gives good advice and a good drawing technique to learn in order to teach drawing/art to children. Not exactly a book for children, but a book that will help YOU teach children! :o) My boys have certainly enjoyed looking thru the book and the pictures, but the "meat" of this book is directed to the parent/teacher. I have thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it, especially to parents/teachers who might be like me and not have great art skills or a background in drawing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2006-05-17

I highly recommend this book for all ages. The lessons were fun for my [...] and my [...]. These lessons teach the children that they can draw without frustration or failure.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Get this book!.......2007-04-16

This is a great how-to-draw book, because it has a very smart strategy: finesse the negative self-criticism that keeps most of us from even beginning to do anything smacking of `art.'

When a six year old once asked her father, a college art instructor, what he did for a living, he said, "I teach people how to draw." Incredulous, she replied: "You mean they forget!?"

We all know why that is-- a censorious voice inside our heads keeps up a murderous barrage of intimidation: "You suck! You can't draw!" And we knuckle under.

Most books on how to draw just reinforce this anxiety. They aim to teach you how to draw realistically, which for most of us means there is just one way to get it right, and a thousand to screw it up. How to solve this problem? Cookie-cutter schematic diagrams are given for drawing everything from portraits to horses, but every time you draw one of those almond shapes for a head, then put in a cross on which to put facial features, you've become a robot and art, an assembly-line production. That's a far cry from the utter fearlessness we all had when armed only with crayons.

This book blows by all this tomfoolery because it cares little for cheap realism but much for real creativity. By not focusing on the "what" but the "how" this book lets you not only think like an artist, but become one. In its pages learning is doing as rules are jettisoned in favor of principles, suggestions and exercises that gently immerse you in the experience of drawing, so that before you know it, you're scribbling away as intently as any six-year old... or Van Gogh. Getting the terminally self-conscious to believe in themselves as artists is no mean achievement--it's damn hard to do as a matter of fact--but Bert Dodson does this beautifully. (Even more experienced artists will learn much from perusing this wise and thoughtful book.)

But don't misunderstand one thing. Dodson's emphasis on creativity isn't an injunction to just "do what you feel." Drawing books like that leave you hanging in the air with no chance for traction and forward-momentum. This book is not one of those. The format in Keys to Drawing with Imagination not only generates much artistic material to work with, but will channel your growing understanding, concentrating it, so that a genuine mastery emerges, confident enough to undertake its own experimentation and exploration. This book is designed to be like the Buddha's raft--once it carries you over the river, you leave it behind to go on your way. For, ultimately, making art is about being free.

I have only one small cavil to make about this superb drawing book. The title bites. With a subject as exciting as creative drawing, this title is like giving Marilyn Monroe a name like Norma Jean. It obviously hopes to cash in on the success of Mr. Dodson's earlier book, Keys to Drawing; I sense the money-grubbing hands of the publisher's bean-counters. My condolences to the author, a most witty and engaging man, who must be suffering grievously.

5 out of 5 stars Teacher/Artist's view.......2007-03-30

Thank you, Bert Dodson, for Drawing With Imagination. It is a much needed elixir for both my creative and professional life. I've been an Art teacher for thirty years and I know from experience that you can teach almost anyone how to draw and paint well. Learning to use the tools is the easy part. What's hard is stimulating the imagination and the confidence to be creative.
Dodson's new book is a brimming reservoir of inspirational projects and ideas for the artist or teacher. Some of these exercises are so freeing, blocks to creativity seem to melt away leaving a fresh landscape of fertile ground. Using Bert's book as a basis for lessons my high school beginning students are stumbling onto originality and my advanced "Portfolio" students are discovering new directions for their work.
Every teacher and artist needs a copy of this book at their fingertips if only for an infusion of energy for your classroom and studio. I didn't realize till I got my copy, I've been waiting for this book for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars This book could be a valuable resource for any enterprise that aims to create something new.......2007-03-30

As a sculptor by avocation I find Bert Dodson's book delightful in its exuberant enthronement of imagination. As a biologist by vocation I'm equally pleased at how much this book evokes the experience of the scientist. The scientist keeps a sharp eye out for mystery in nature, imagines plausible explanations, devises experiments to test his ideas, and emerges with insights. The artist, similarly, observes, experiments interprets and brings forth something new. For both, imagination is a powerful key to success in discovery.
I am particularly impressed by Dodson's use of metaphor as a potent artistic explanatory device. In many different situations he discusses and illustrates ways in which "metaphoric seeing" " - looking at something and seeing something else - "awakens our ability to bring our own interpretation to reality."

5 out of 5 stars Bert Dodson- Genius!.......2007-03-27

Bert Dodson's new book on drawing from the imagination liberates drawing from its shackles and empowers all of us to make a strong visual statement in our own unique way. Thank you Mr. Dodson for expanding on your classic work, Keys to Drawing. You never stop inspiring us but most of all you make us believe in ourselves!

5 out of 5 stars I loved this book.......2007-03-25

Keys to Drawing with Imagination is a wonderful book for someone who loves to draw but doesn't feel confident. This book helped me realize that my doodles have the potential for beginning my journey into my imagination. I like reading into the mind of Bert Dodson, the artist, which helps me understand what drives at least one person's creative vision.

These books are great. They have many thematic ties to our curriculum. I made them into centers by copying the book and gluing them to a colorful folder and laminating it. I put those in the writing center whenever we were focusing on a certain theme. A great resource for 1-3.

5 out of 5 stars Improves handwriting and basic drawing skills! A++++.......2006-01-01

This is a wonderful set of books. We are using it as a handwriting practice program (for 1st & 2nd grade) rather than a drawing program, but I'm sure it has applications both ways.

My children typically dread handwriting, but they really enjoy this format - learning to draw something recognizable and then copying the 3-4 informative sentences that are provided. Copying the drawings helps them with following step-by-step directions as well as fine motor control. They are justifiably proud of their sketches and often add other fanciful elements to their drawings.

And they take great care in their writing, even though they have to translate the writing into the D'Nealian format. In their old handwriting sessions, the writing would start neat and quickly deteriorate by the end of the page, but using this program, the writing is beautiful from beginning to end. It is almost as if they want their writing to look nice because they are so proud of their drawings.

We did buy special writing paper (top half of the page is blank for the drawing, and the bottom half has lines for writing) from a local teacher supply store, and I have also seen similar paper at Office Depot, although the qualify of the teacher supply store paper was considerably better.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Keep Them On the Shelves!.......2004-03-18

I am a teacher-librarian and I can't keep these drawing books on the shelves! I am always looking for drawing books and these are perfect for the primary and early elementary age group. The simple instructions and diagrams help the children to produce realistic drawings which are the starting point for a host of creative projects! I've noticed that the children are becoming more confident in their ability to draw and they are developing a LOVE of drawing. Tell me where to get more books like these!

5 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up, most definitely!!.......2004-03-02

As a parent and former early childhood educator, I am pleased to write this review. In a day and age when entertainment does not require much thought process from our young ones (i.e. video games, pointless television shows, computer software, etc.), it is very refreshing to stumble upon the Anti-Coloring Book. Our children are exposed to endless amounts of effort-free fun stuff; and ultimately, young minds become lazy, trained, and forgetful of the power of imagination. How can you say no to a product that fosters developmentally appropriate learning, and promotes self awareness, self confidence, self expression, and independent thinking?? Help your child to break free from the lines and boundaries that hold them back. Kudos to the creators... it's time to get real about our children's needs!

Book Description

Who hasn't, at one time or other, kept a journal? The impulse to record our daily lives on paper is nothing if not universal. Still, only a few of us have the discipline to make it past the first few entries, and fewer still manage to create diaries whose insight and visual beauty can inspire anyone but their authors. Drawing from Life: The Journal as Art is an exploration of these exceptions books of obsessive wonder filled to their borders with drawings, sketches, watercolors, graphs, charts, lists, collages, portraits, and photographs.

Jennifer New takes readers on a spirited tour into the private worlds of journal keepers an architect, a traveler, a film director, an archeologist, a cancer patient, a songwriter, a quiltmaker, a gardener, an artist, a cyclist, and a scientist, to name just a few illustrating a broad range of journaling styles and techniques that in the end show how each of us can go about documenting our everyday lives. Excerpts from journals by such artists as Maira Kalman, Steven Holl, David Byrne, and Mike Figgis give us a peek at how creative souls observe, reflect, and explore.

For those who already keep a journal, Drawing from Life will be an inspiration. For those who have always wanted to or tried and failed it might just be the motivation needed to get past that first week.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Reassuring for those who journal, inspiring for those who want to........2007-01-18

I am a visual artist and have always been fascinated with the concept of journaling. This book helped me understand that there's no wrong way to keep a journal (for those of you who tend to think your journal isn't as interesting as other peoples, or that you're "not doing it right", this book is a confidence booster). Journaling is often personal and it's easy to feel self conscious of ones journal while in a vacuum; going through this book and seeing the stories and examples of total strangers helped me not be so critical of myself. I very much enjoyed the examples of each persons journal, especially the handwritten ones; the image quality was so good you could read the entries clearly. It's fun looking through other peoples journals, but confusing if you don't have the person there to explain things...this book includes how the journal writer works, why they do it, and how it has benefited other aspects of their career and/or life.

I was impressed that the majority of the people featured in the book weren't career artists; some were naturalists, psychiatrists, mothers, and college students (to name a few). I liked that there was a wide spectrum of individuals featured in the book.

It also shows that there are a variety of ways to keep a journal and that it doesn't always have to be a "Dear Diary" kind of scenario. It was also interesting to see what people used for journals and how they incorporated other media such as collage, digital photography, etc. or how journaling led to other forms of creation.

As other reviewers have mentioned this is not a book of journaling techniques. However, I found it inspiring to see the different kinds of journals people keep and it's given me ideas of my own to run with.

This book features photographs & a couple of sample pages from a select & varied group of people - some are artists, some are other professions. I thought the book would be an inspiration for journaling - I did not find it so. Many of the photo pages are unreadable and uninspiring. Felt it was a waste of time and money.

5 out of 5 stars For Your Inspiration-no technique included but visually very pleasing.......2006-03-02

This book is a great glimpse into how people from different fields treat their journals. From putting them up on a pedestal to utilitarian jotting down of memos and thoughts.

If you are looking for techniques this book does not have them. If you are looking for inspiration-this book certainly has it. The dimensions of the book is also quite nice as is the weight of the papers within. Includes a great variety of contributors-now I just want to see the rest of their personal journals.

I received this as a gift for Christmas and I think I have looked at it every day since. I would recommend this for a gift for yourself or family and friends.

If you love love looking at journal arts this is a book worth putting in your rotation.

5 out of 5 stars An exciting look at journals!.......2006-02-26

If you are looking for pretty, "Somerset Studio" style journals, you'll be disappointed by this book. However, this book opens the mind to the possibility of many more kinds of journals. A wide variety of journalers from all over the world are represented here. Fascinating stuff!

5 out of 5 stars An easy to use and understand assessment tool. .......2007-02-13

Kinetic House-Tree-Person Drawings or K-H-T-P by Robert C. Burns of the Seattle Institute of Human Development, is an easy to use and understand interpretative manual for this popular, though still controversial, assessment technique.

Dr. Burn's theory for adding the Kinetic action-to-purpose element to the existing classical model, argues that action in the exercise and symbiosis of the projective components, interplay in creating a dynamic that can yield much more patient information than the standard traditional technique and paradigm.

Dr. Burns demonstrates his point by comparing and contrasting results from several classical model assessments of projective drawings with a kinetic model and interpretation. K-H-T-P is well written and organized providing rich examples of real illustrations for practice and reflection. It is an excellent tool and reference guide for all serious advanced students of psychology and for which assessment will be an important part of their practice.

For the serious student of projective techniques, I would recommend not to focus to much on the illustrations until you have read the concept and assessment techniques provided within and then take a turn at assessment and compare your effort with Dr. Burns final conclusions.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2007-01-11

Well presented and an excellent resource for those that utilize this easily administrated and effective assessment.

4 out of 5 stars A good tool.......2004-02-01

I started using art projection when I was a psychologist for a child adolescent unit in a state hospital. A good way to engage angry or depressed children without threat is to ask them to draw something, unless they have poor perceptual motor skills. But getting them to draw will tell you something about that right away. It is important to know what to expect in average drawing skills and this book helps with that. It also gives a place to start with children who have difficulty with verbal expression. This is not the Be All- End All text but it is worthy of being a companion to other art evaluation tools. It is for the subjective anecdotal information to supplement the more objective tools.

5 out of 5 stars It works for me in Special Education: quick emotional test.......2003-07-06

This is not the original I was trained to use but it works as well or better than Goodall's. I use it twice a year and have found the student responses are more in depth for interpretation than their psychoeducational or psychological reports. You can find more quickly where the "hope" level is and put energy into those who are reachable and refer those who aren't. I have collected hundreds of these samples over the years and find most are right on the mark. Of course, it mustn't be used as a diagnostic tool but it works well as a verifier of info.

2 out of 5 stars An unproven laundry list for interpretation.......2001-06-10

For those who want easy answers to deciphering drawings, then this book is a *must read.* But reader beware-- this research is not particularly sound and the original text was written in the early 70's, approximately 30 years ago-- and this book was not significantly updated since then. Hello! Our family values and ideas about family have changed since then, but that is not addressed in this volume. An art therapist worth their salt does not use this type of unreliable assessment to work with clients. I apologize for disagreeing with the last reviewer, but I believe this volume is more of a *must avoid* rather than any type of a classic in the field of art therapy.

Book Description

Making art, according to Cathy Malchiodi, may be as important to your physical and spiritual health as balanced nutrition, regular exercise, or meditation. Expressing yourself creatively—through drawing, painting, sculpture, photography—allows you to tap into a source of inner wisdom that provides guidance, soothes emotional pain, and revitalizes your being. The Soul's Palette reveals art's transformative powers. Exercises include working with materials for drawing, painting, sculpting, and collage; simple drawing and journal projects; self-guided meditations and affirmations; ideas for cultivating intuition, inspiration, and spontaneity; exploring personal symbols; and making art a spiritual practice.

5 out of 5 stars Little gem!.......2007-09-10

I loved this book! It's a fast read, but rich - full of great advice and suggestions for art activities that tap into the inner self. The author tells of her Catholic upbringing, but shares information on a variety of faiths and how they explore self through art. I'm teaching art to adults, and found it a very relevant resource. I also recommend it to anyone seeking to explore art in a playful, low-pressure way.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-02-07

I realy liked this book.
It made me think about how art really helps people.
Including me.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Spiritually Juicy Book!.......2005-09-07

This book is an inspiration! On every page, in every section there is something to draw on to expand one's spiritual and artistic expression. The mandala information is very good. The pocket shrines are also wonderful to make with or for children. They really respond to them. I was encouraged, uplifted, and inspired to create more art, and as a result learned more about me in 40 days, than I have in 10 years. If there was one art/spirituality book (that wasn't a single technique) that everyone needs for their bookshelf...it is this one. Don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars Really great!.......2003-11-26

This is a great book for tapping into that inner voice, taking some time to be quiet with ourselves and just plain have some artsy-craftsy fun. The book sarts with some intro chapters that provide short stories/examples of the healing power of art through the ages - from Buddah to present day folks. From there it talks about "being mindful" - here there's discussion of drawing things from your dreams, using your imagination, etc. I love the section that talks about the difference between "curing" (where you remove all evidence of the disease) and "healing" (a more spiritual transformation of repairing and connecting, gaining a peace.) Again, there are lots of stories andexamples within the text which makes it interesting reading. The next few chapters go into getting in touch with your soul's palette - rediscovering what you see as "art", remembering your own personal history as an artist, paying attention to symbols. Next there's a whole chapter on different mediums to play around with (water color, clay, pen & ink, chalk, etc. Then she gets into playing around with art, being creative, letting ourselves free to create. There are short exercises throughout to help get you rolling and there are great discussions on things like howe to talk to your images/embrace them and create meaning around them. Then there's the healing aspect - one excerise is "paint or draw your emotional response to illness" another is "use color to sooth your symptom." There's also a section that talks about keeping a journal. Overall a really excellent book that I've enjoyed. Its fun, and there are so many interesting ideas/information woven in. Symbols have always been of interest to me and there's some interesting info on that in here too.

The chapters in the book are as follows:

- Rediscovering the Soul's Palette
- Creativity as a Healing force
- Knowing materials and creating space
- Visual symbols as messengers, guides and friends
- Letting your images tell their stories
- Images as a path to physical well-being
- Art as reparation and restoration
- Nuturing the sacred
- Sharing the Artist within

I definitely recommend this book for someone looking to open up/get in touch with that quiet voice. I have a clay cup that has a saying written on it - "When in doubt, listen quietly to yourself." This book helps you listen to that quiet voice.

5 out of 5 stars beautifully written, best book on this topic to date.......2003-05-26

I have read all the books on art and health and this one surpasses all of them. The author writes beautifully and sensitively about art making and why it is helpful to one's well-being. The exercises suggested in this book are easy to do and have great results, for both the beginner as well as more advanced. While I loved No More Second Hand Art by London and Trust the Process by McNiff, this book is much more clear in its writing and message.

The book is particularly useful if you are going through a physical illness or emotional distress-- you will find that the author offers many creative strategies to help. And if you are interested in spiritual aspects of art making, you can buy no better book on why art and spirituality are closely connected.

5 out of 5 stars The Secret World of Drawing, by Furth.......2006-11-10

This was a great book for beginners in art therapy. It explained the basics and was easy to read. One has a good explanation of what to look at and how to identify what the artist is saying through his/her art. This book gets a big "OK" from me.

5 out of 5 stars A book that really heped me understand my child.......2004-09-03

This book opened up my child's world to me in a way that I hadn't expected. Even if you are uncertain of the efficacy of picture interpretaion, this book offers wonderful insight into family dynamics.

One of the best books I have ever read!

5 out of 5 stars a woman who runs with the wolves.......2003-07-23

An excellent, well written, concise, comprehensive and clear introduction for professionals and lay people as well, curious about and interested in understanding drawings. Actually, the best book I have read in the field. I especially appreciate, that it offers GUIDELINES in interpretating pictures, without presuming to have/posess a set of rigid assumptions about the exact meaning of any of the components (size, color, figure, motion etc.). It is a book, which, however, must be read several times, most of all because of the amount of information it containes. It is an absolute MUST, for everbody, fascinated about and deligthed in deciphering the (mostly) hidden world of our uncounscius Psyche!!!!
