Creating Beautiful Boxes With Inlay Techniques .......2007-07-21
Good tips and beautiful boxes. The directions are sufficient to be able to make the boxes in the book.
Great learning tool.......2007-07-07
The Inlay book is an invaluable resource for beginning woodworkers. Very informative and well written. The author demonstrates methods for using pre-made inlays, as well as providing instructions for making your own inlays. I highly recommend the book. I have all of Doug Stowe's books on box making and enjoy them all.
I shudder to think!.......2006-12-08
The book has some really interesting ideas for boxes. It is definitely worth getting for that reason alone.
This is not a good book for an inexperienced woodworker. Many of the router table techniques shown are incredibly dangerous---I can't believe the author has gotten away with doing things the way he does without losing a few fingers along the way. I shudder to think what might happen to a new woodworker who tries these techniques.
The projects described are somewhat incomplete and quirky. One project, for example, has panel doors---the cutting list contains dimensions for the rails and stiles of the doors, but not the panels. Not a problem for me, since I normally use these things as a source of ideas/inspirations for projects of my own design. But for someone who is looking for a step-by step project guide, this will prove disappointing. As another example, one project mentions using "brainerd hinges"--not a knife hinge, a slot hinge, a quadrant hinge, etc, but a "brainerd hinge". But the author neither shows the hinges in any of the illustrations nor explains them in the text. I was quite puzzled as to just what exactly a "Brainerd Hinge" might be and asked several woodworking buddies. Nobody had any idea. Finally, out of desperation, I "googled" the term "brainerd hinge" and found out that there is a "Brainerd" company that makes hinges. Apparently the author meant a simple butt hinge made by the Brainerd company. The book is full of these quirks and one can either be frustrated at them or view them as part of the book's charm.
One final comment---many of the boxes appealed to my design sense, but some others seemed rather clunky in their proportions. But that's easy enough to change on your own. I say this to stress that the strength of the book is in providing a number of interesting design/construction ideas that can be adapted in many different ways.
Not as in-depth as I hoped.......2002-08-14
I bought this book hoping to cull some ideas for an idea I have for a box with inlay. However, this book is just straight ahead projects. The book does cover other things, like hand made dove tail joints, and making wood inlay - but they weren't as in-depth as I was hoping. If you have a shop full of various power tools and chisels and saws, etc - this book is for you. If you're looking for ideas on box designs/construction, and have a limited set of tools - I wouldn't recommend this one.
Woodwork as art.......2000-10-17
A woodworker with little experience with inlay technique often thinks these beautiful projects are beyond their capabilities. This book takes the mystery out of inlay design with its copious photos and descriptions of work in progress. As a modestly experienced woodworker, I found the projects somewhat challenging, while the end result was truely magnificent. The book is a course in appreciating wood for its natural beauty. The boxes are relatively plain, however the projects represent nature's most beautiful art form. A definite must for any wood library.

Inlay.......2007-05-13
I didn't have any formal background or knowledge of inlay. This book went through the fundamentals and gave good insight on what to start with and little tricks of the trade. I recommend this book for the beginner.
Very amazing work.......2007-04-11
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for exquisite inlays in wood. The pictures worth it, trust me. Good shoots of very nice work, of different styles. The book also cover how to cut pearl (and also other materials) and inlay by your own, showing tools of the trade and sources of drawings and information. Delight it!
An excellent book.......2007-04-01
I originally bought this for a friend for christmas. After having to ask him if I could borrow it all the time I bought my own. It has great pictures and very complete instruction on the process of inlaying. Having done a few pearl inlays on various instruments I found it very useful. As always though..... practise makes perfect...
The Art of Inlay review.......2007-03-30
I received the book and have found it very helpful. I am considering doing my own inlay on a guitar I am making. This will be most helpful.
Beautiful pictures.......2007-02-17
A beautiful display of unbelievable work that few of us would even attempt. Only the basics on "how to". But maybe that's all there is to it; hours and hours of tedium.

Book Description
Intarsia refers to the ancient art of wooden mosaics-making pictures in wood. The authors have taken this art form and adapted it for today's woodworker. Using easily available woods and common woodworking tools such as scroll and band saws, the average woodworker can produce beautiful wooden reliefs through step-by-step instruction. The included patterns range from large, majestic portraits and murals to small jewel-like mosaics. Full-color photographs illustrate the beautiful and intricate work possible in the realm of intarsia.
Customer Reviews:
Good start for the Newbie.......2006-03-08
If you are just starting in Intarsia, as am I, this is a good reference to get some knowledge of the art and how to get rolling - or sawing as the case may be. The step-by-step description of a first project gives one more information than some need, but it certainly gives insight to the detail and proceedure required. The patterns included in the book will get you started in fine fashion.
Good, but misleading cover.......2004-02-28
I am just learning the art of intarsia, and this book had some helpful information. However, I was quite disappointed that none of the patterns in the book are for the pieces on the back cover (does and fawn, rearing horse, duck)- only the front cover patterns are included.
Lost in the woods.......2000-08-25
As I became lost in the art of intarsia, this book was my map. Completely unknown to the craft, I purchased this book as a way to beat my summer bordom. As I opened each page, a swirl of thoughts came to me, and I immediately made plans to visit the local hardwood retailer to start my first project. But where to start? This book has the most wonderful design ideas, from beginner to advanced, even I was impressed with the works I had done. You can make each project over and over, because the wood you use is always different. I would recomend this book highly to anyone slightly interested in the art and history and creativity of intarsia.

Customer Reviews:
Groundbreaking; extraordinary........2005-06-21
This book should have been entitled, "Advanced Laminated Designs in Wood." This is no easy book, but that is not the fault of the author- the subject matter itself is difficult. However, the author spared no effort to convey this method of woodworking, and if the reader is willing to take the time needed to grasp it, he/she will reap considerable rewards. I love the book, and I highly recommend it.
All the methodology is clearly layed out, with numerous pictures and illustrations of how to create these designs. The designs themselves are beautiful and so variable, you could make them for years without ever repeating the same pattern.
I should note that this method results in considerable amounts of wood turned into dust and scrap. You will also have to construct an elaborate (though very useful) cutting sled for your table saw. And at times the book reads like a college text, although the author is a very capable writer.
That being said, I still highly recommend the book to serious artists and woodworkers who use inlay, intarsia, marquetry, or do segmented turning.
Deep, but Thorough.......2002-02-16
This book is so complete with jigs that are necessary to do the exact cutting required for good results that some woodworkers may not appreciate it. It has all the formulae to calculate the amount of lumber required for a project. If the woodworker has the patience to read this book and follow the design instruction, then experiment with different widths and numbers of the laminates, the possibilities are unending. Clarence Rannefeld, the author, has tried to introduce us to a whole new field in woodworking. Use your scientific calculator for the formulae, then cut and glue, and cut and glue some more and beauty will jump out at you. Above all, be patient. This type of woodworking is an art. Intarsia enthusiasts will love it.
Not for novices.......2001-12-29
I agree with the first reviewer in most respects. The book is an awesome resource on how to make solid laminates. However, it could be greatly improved if the author would give more details on how to make the jig. There are good pictures and sketchy details but no measurements or helpful details. This book is definitely for the experienced woodworker. A little experience is good, but expect to struggle. Of course, that's what some of us like about woodworking -- the struggle, then the beautiful finished product when we're done.
Woodworking as an art form.......2001-02-16
This book gives information about a beautiful form of woodworking, complete with many colorful pictures and explanations of how to do it yourself. Mr. Rannefeld has developed wood laminating into an art form and his work is inspiring. He shows hundreds of different cutting patterns, gives details on building his special jig for the table saw, and includes some projects that anyone would be proud to make and own. Note that this is not a beginner's woodworking book. The technique and the projects require some skill. However, once you master it, the variety of objects this technique can be applied to is endless. Turned bowls, trays, tables, clocks, and more. All can be enhanced and beautified with this method. This is not simple surface lamination, but rather it goes throughout the wood. So once it has been created, the wood can be cut and shaped and the laminated design remains intact. An exellent book for a woodworker with the desire and dedication to create not just woodworking projects, but woodworking art.

Customer Reviews:
simple is the key word.......2004-09-04
I enjoyed the first 70 pages of the book. The author talked about technique, finishes, etc. I was disappointed in the the actual objects. The patterns were not full size and there were no measurments given. It was all sort of vague.
Plus, I understoof Marquetry to be with the use of scroll saws and coping saws. The author never even showed these techniques.
It was an interesting view, but NOT for the beginner wishing to learn the true art of marquetry. It is, indeed, "simple."
All projects include templates and instructions.......2001-06-08
"Marquetry" is the cutting and assembly of a variety of think woods (called veneers) to make a colorful pattern and showcase the beauty of wood. In Simple Marquetry, Mike Burton draws upon his more than forty years of experience and expertise to show the reader how to transform plan objects into esthetically impressive functional and decorative items with a series of easy-to-follow techniques. There is an extensive and basic "how-to" section for the novice, and one that does not require elaborate equipment or expensive setups. This is followed by fifteen projects ranging from a set of kitchen canisters embellished with rustic images to a striking contemporary design created by repeating geometric shapes. All projects include templates and detailed, step-by-step instructions which are augmented by photography. Simple Marquetry is ideal for the weekend hobbyist and a wonderful introduction to a specialized and enduringly beautiful craft.
Expert Secerets of Marquetry.......2001-02-25
Mike Burton has accomplished a feat that few author's ever accomplish. He has produced a "how to" manual that surpasses his original publication on Veneering. Mr burton has shared with his readers the techniques, tools, proper processes and product inter-actions seldom disclosed by an artist. The process is explained in such detail that failure is not even a consideration. Thanks Mike!!!!

Guitarmaking: Tradition And Technology (Guitar Reference)
ASIN: 0879307560 |
Book Description
For more than 30 years, Grit Laskin has been building guitars, and his striking inlay work places his instruments in a class all their own. He is credited with single-handedly taking the ages-old tradition of musical instrument inlay from its purely decorative roots into an art form, a means of expression. In his hands, shell, stone, legal ivory and metal emerge as the palette of a re-invented medium. A sumptuous, full-color-throughout, coffee-table quality tome, this is the first book to document the breadth of his work and the techniques he has devised. Grit Laskin is the first and only musical instrument maker to receive Canada's prestigious Saidye Bronfman Award for Excellence. The Museum of Civilization, Canada's equivalent to the Smithsonian, has four Laskin guitars in its permanent collection. Includes an essay on the history of inlay by Chuck Erickson. Photography by Brian Pickell. "(Grit's) work is more than adornment - it's mind-blowingly interesting." - Bob Taylor, Taylor Guitars
Customer Reviews:
A True Master.......2007-05-15
This book will show you some of the masterpieces created by Grit Laskin, who is not only one of the best luthier for acoustic guitars but a true genius as his inlays are so colorful and original. You will discover what kind of material he uses and how long it could be to make such a work of art.You will understand that the inlay is not only a decoration on the instrument, but that the guitar is also a support for this peculiar form of decorative art. If you could have the sound it would be perfect, but it is only a book....
Nice Coffee Table Book.......2006-09-22
As an amatuer guitar builder I am very interested in the techniques used by other luthiers in their inlay process. This book provided many beautiful pictures of the inlay work of Grit Laskin however it really did not get into enough details for doing the inlay work itself.
I would recommend this book for those that are gutiar lovers that want to enjoy pictures of beautiful inlay art work. However, I would not recommend it for the luthier that is seeking knowledge on how to improve their inlay work.
An exquisite gift.......2004-01-21
Over the years, Grit Laskin has made impressive contributions to the craft of inlay and of guitarmaking. In doing so, he has elevated both to the level of art. His beautiful new book is an in depth perspective on his art. One of the most respected masters in the field, Laskin, is a recipient of Canada's prestigious Saidye Bronfman Award for Excellence In The Crafts and a founder of Association of Stringed Instrument Artisans (ASIA). His book, which features a stunning collection of photos of his work, is another gift to the art.
Laskin begins with a brief biographical sketch which is low keyed, the opening section included photos of Laskin's first basement shop and subsequent modest facilities. We also learn about the artists approach to guitar construction as separate from the inlay process and to the business of guitarmaking. Much of this first section focuses on the collaborative web independent guitarmaking scene of Toronto in the 70's and 80's and the synergy between Laskin, Larrivée and De Jonge and other.
There is also a well done section about the history of inlay and a helpful section on his method for drawing, cutting and installing his inlays. This later section has a brief but effective overview of the tools and techniques and includes excellent photos illustrations. In it, Laskin includes valuable discussions about the role of reconstructed stone and ablam as part of his palette of materials.
The final two thirds of this book is a collection of exquisite photographs of Grit's guitars taken by Brian Pickell. These are accompanied by comments on each work from the author/artist. Through these words and pictures we are given a glimpse into the creative process. Written in a conversational tone this is Laskin's invitation to the reader to eaves drop on the some of the thought processes that led up to each design.
All this being said, Laskin's art, rendered in shell, stone, and wood speaks eloquently for itself. Pickell's photos capture the genius of both the breathtaking overall designs and the super-realistic details which cause these works to soar. This book offers the reader a window into the creative process. Think of it as this exquisite stained glass window with a clear center piece through which we view the work of a master artist.

The Art of Inlay and Expanded: Design and Technique for Fine Woodworking
ASIN: 0892366850 |
Book Description
For centuries the art of marquetry has been centered in Paris, where the tradition has been transmitted only within workshops concentrated in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. The outside world, therefore, has had very limited knowledge of the techniques used by the masters of this art.
The publication of this English-language edition of La Marquetrie gives amateurs, art historians, creative woodworkers, and conservators access to an invaluable body of knowledge of the techniques of marquetry, covering the history of the craft as well as explanations of how a marqueter's studio is
organized and the materials, instruments, drawing, preparation, and procedures used in the craft. It combines a thorough explanation of the craft techniques with detailed analysis of period examples, thereby giving readers a better understanding of marquetry pieces and new insights into shop
practices. The book is an invaluable resource both for the art historian and the practicing craftsperson.

Otimo livro .......2005-08-02

It doesn't get any better than this.......2005-01-30
Marquetry is impressive if you are making a simple flower or a project as ornate as the examples that are given in this book. Covering the art form from the early adopters in France and Italy, he explains in detail the procedures, as well as the tools that are used. When you see some of the pictures of the projects, you will think that you need a lifetime of practice to get to those levels, and maybe you do. They are so elaborate and ornate that you will appreciate what can be done in the art form.
The book is large and is something worth featuring on a shelf. It is wonderfully illustrated, and they don't short you on the full color photographs.
The chapters are; Veneer Decoration, History, The Marqueters Workshop, The Materials, The Instruments, The Drawing, Preparation, Procedures, Frisage and Jeux De Fond, The Construction of Cutting Tools, and Conclusion.
The book is 14" x 10" and every page is packed with beautiful color photographs, and at the very least a drawing. Makes for an interesting read, as well as seeing what is being explained in full color. With so many full size color photos, you can see why the book is more expensive than a standard book.
Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned practitioner in the art form, this book will capture you. See the highest forms in the art, chosen by the top museums for display. All in all a first class reference. Highly recommended.
Outstanding!.......1998-11-21
I found this book to be completely comprehensive on the subject of marquetry. Everyone who loves this art form will want to have this in their library.
A superb book. Excellent pictures, great explanations........1998-05-13
I have two books of the same author: Masterpieces of marquetry (or something simmilar since it is written in French) and Marquetry. Each of the books cost over 100 USD in France and belong to a collection this author has published on the same subject. The Marquetry book (in English) I believe is the best book of its class. It has very detailed sketches of real antique designs. It not only explains the techniques but also stone inlaying, designing of tools and benches for cutting materials, etc.

Book Description
Accurate, authentic, and expertly proportioned patterns present multi-dimensional outdoor scenes of North American birds in this instructional woodworking guide. With clear instructions for cutting and assembly, these patterns—enhanced with computers for ease of craft—depict such birds as bald eagles, blue heron, and Canada geese. Designs for unique decorative frames resembling the birds’ native environments, such as forests, meadows, and lakes, accompany each pattern.
