Great book!.......2007-05-07
This book is very interesting. It has taken a very difficult concept (figure drawing) and broken it down into easy to understand step by step directions. The author's costume sketches were very helpful as well.
Pleased but not overwhelmed.......2006-03-24
I am not sure what I had expected for a teaching format but my initial reaction to the book was that it was too cartoony for the structure I was looking for in the human body and expression.
As an artist's model for the last 24 years and as a costume designer for the last 21 who's drawing skills have not kept pace, I was looking for a more direct and perhaps, academic approach.
What I have discovered in reading and studying the text is that the author is a very gifted costume designer and teacher. This is not a book for a quick-fix. The book requires time and attention in each section if you are a beginner.
While the book did not address the design style I was hoping for,it more than met the criteria for a strong teaching text.
Amazingly helpful!.......2006-03-20
I had to do a full costume presentation with renderings for 6 characters for my class and I was so lost! I am not an artist at all, so I got this book and it helped me so much. It explained everything in detail and my renderings came out great! I would definitely recommend this book for beginners and experienced alike!
Everything You Need to Know.......2005-12-25
I bought this book because I had a project to do on costume rendering, and I know very little about it. Now, thanks to Tan Huaixiang, I know so much.
He makes drawing the figure bearable, shows how the body should look under the clothes, and provides many, many detailed examples. It shows how to beautifully draw different textures and the different methods of painting the rendering.
The chapter about the face could show better how to draw the eyes, nose, and mouth. Other than this, I believe everything is well written and explained.
This book is definetly worth the money!
Character Costume Figure Drawing: Step-by-Step Drawing Methods for Theatre Costume Designers.......2005-10-04
Not only are there body types, movement and mediums. It covers fabrics and works in a way my students can understand as well as use. The artwork is lush! A must for any design teacher.

NOT A BEGINNING.......2007-06-13
THIS IS A VERY GOOD BOOK BUT NOT ONE FOR THE "AVERAGE" BASIC BEGINNER. WAS HOPING FOR A STEP BY STEP.
Good Book for Figure Drawing.......2007-03-17
Lots of good excercises for those new to drawing the human figure.
One of the Top 5 figure drawing books in the Classical Tradition.......2004-04-27
When I review DRAWING books, the first question I ask is, "Is this for BEGINNERS?" Because I feel an obligation to the book buyer to provide good information, and also to prevent a beginning student from being discouraged, and feeling that they are defective, or ....just cannot get it.
It does not seem to occur to the buyer that many authors just cannot teach. Instinct seems to suggest that that if book gets published, it must contain credible instruction by someone who knows how to teach, and everyone seems to desire to cash in on the Big Bucks market of HOW-TO-DRAW. It may seem surprising that this is just not so. Perhaps as many as half of all drawing books are not very good for beginners. I know. I've gotten familiar with most of the books on the market, and I know what I'm looking for in good instruction.
I've purchased over 25 drawing books, and own the most popular titles of the HOW-TO-DRAW genre. I rate Famous Artists School's "How To Draw The Human Figure" as one of the top 5 books on figure drawing. At this price it's a bargain anyway. Using the classical method of representing the body as cylinders in basic outline, this book covers not just static models, but representation of the human figure in dynamic motion. I consider this a "must have" book that cuts through all nonsense with no wasted pages.
Why do I consider this book so successful, at only 98 pages, when I call other books of the same size or 20 pages larger a failure as a drawing book? Famous Artist's school focuses only on basic figure drawing, whereas most other drawing books move on to cover other material such as composition, perspective, color etc., which shortchanges the buyer on Basic Figure Drawing. By keeping focus, this book is very useful to any beginner. At this price, it's a bargain also!
Very usefull book for begginers.......2000-11-21
With easy, steb by step method, this book guide you through fascinating skills of drawing a human figure. It also contains basic anatomy, proportions... This book realy offers more value for your money.
Book Description
Portraits not only capture a likeness, but offer for generations to come a glimpse into the subject's life. Sounds like quite a challenge. But with Ann Kullberg's help, it's not as difficult as one might think to create lifelike colored pencil portraits.
Using her own beautiful portraiture for instruction and inspiration, Kullberg walks artists through the process step by step--from basic information about materials and techniques to two demonstrations that show how complete portraits come together from beginning to end.
Readers will also find Kullberg's secrets for making their portrait come alive, along with 17 mini-demos that make it easy to paint realistic features, hair and clothing.

Colored Pencil Portraits: Step by Step.......2007-09-14
This book is equally useful for beginning colored pencil artists through more advanced portrait artists. It is a must read for beginners, as I am. Author Anita Kullberg begins with basic colored pencil techniques, composition and the all-important skills of using light, dark and mid tone values. Then, she leads the reader through the step-by-step techniques of painting skin tones, facial characteristics and realistic hair. By the time I painted my second portrait using Kullberg's techniques described in this book, my painting was believable and recognizable. Far more important to the amateur, I really liked my work! The book is indexed for an easy search for content and Kullberg's "Hints" are real gems. This is a great reference book in addition to the tutorials.
Best book on colored pencils ever!!!!.......2007-08-08
This book was spectacular. The author and artist is absolutely amazing. When I found the book I had no idea how to blend and make skin tone with colored pencil being a black and white pencil artist, but I was able to read her instructions and use them to make my first colored pencil portrait and it looked fantastic. If you are an aspiring portrait artist and you want to learn colored pencils, this is a book you can't do without!
Colored Pencil Portraits: Step By Step.......2007-07-31
This book got me started on colored pencil, it was my very first introduction to the medium. Ann Kullberg through her enthusiasm is incredibly motivating- with carefully thought out step by step techniques and beautiful paintings to show you exactly how she achieved each effect. She goes through every process of creating a portrait in colored pencil starting from a blank page- learning the tools; to composition; right up to the business of selling your work. Ann is also very humble and took the time to answer all of my questions personally when I wrote her a letter. It was because of this and the great joy I got from working through her lessons I went to one of her workshops. She is a patient teacher who will not hesitate to help another-sharing all of her secrets. Ann Kulberg is of great strong moral character and a master of her trade. I would recommend any product she has created.
Colored Pencil Portraits: Step-By-Step .......2007-05-14
This is a wonderful book. It is very informative if you want to learn to work with colored pencils. I recommend it to any bidding artist!
If you can attend her workshop-do it!!!.......2007-04-17
I just attended her portrait workshop for 3 days & can tell you that this gal is the real deal! She's genuinely gifted & has such a wonderful & bubbly personality! I had attended a workshop 2 yrs. ago from a different cp artist & vowed not to go to any more until I decided to go to Ann's (whose workshop I wished I could've took in 2005 instead of Arlene's). This book will help you so much!! I am used to doing colored pencil with the scumbling method which takes forever!! Ann has developed the most amazingly easy technique that is so much faster & looks just as good if not better!! I think the only bad reviews must be by her ex! Ha! I want to attend the 2nd workshop someday that goes with her 2nd book. I have her CDs that go with her books & CDs of her online magazine for colored pencil. All are so helpful!! Her method & books will help even the worst of artists I believe! Thank you Ann for all of your help!!

Great book for drawing enthusiasts.......2005-02-14
This is probably one of the best in the "How to Draw series..." The pictures in this book are very easy to follow and results can be expected. The book seems to have a "thesis" if you will, the goal is to teach the patron how the muscles of the human body are to be drawn, and how they move in different actions and by the end of the book you can expect to be very good at it.
Be sure to do each drawing numerous times, you will see your improvement and get motivated for other drawings.
I recommend this book to everyone; even the most novice of artists can enjoy it.
In My Humble Opinion
Lots of fun for athletic artists.......1998-10-07
I liked drawing hockey, basketball, football, karate and fencing the best. It was easy when you followed the diagrams. Now I can draw them better without the book too. I liked learning how to draw all the sports, but I haven't got all of them yet. (Susie - age 8) The book provided good visual step by step drawings to follow, to show how the body parts can be added and changed. There was a lot of variety of sports depicted. It kept her attention for quite awhile! (Her mom)
Great!.......1998-09-13
I bought a book called Draw 50 Athletes. First I started with the easy things. Then I started working on harder things. Then I could draw anything. This book is good for kids who like drawing and sports. I think this book is good for kids and I recommned it.

Perfect Learning.......2001-04-19
I didn't know what to expect when I first got the book. I was actually quite intimidated since the book's drawings were so good, and I was still learning how to draw the human figure. I especially liked the sections on foreshortening and perspective of the human body. Unlike some other art books, these elements were actually taught which was a big PLUS for me. I didn't really like how some sections of the book were quite vague, and since I'm a visual learner, it needed more diagrams. The body types were also almost virtually the same (the models were mostly slim women and it also had its share of muscular men), however the techniques taught were very good. I would definately recommend this to the beginner, however he or she should know a bit about drawing the human figure. Overall, it's an excellent book to learn techniques to drawing and painting the human anatomy.
Book Description
From understanding the basics of human anatomy to capturing the grace of the female nude to accurately depicting a person’s figure and form, this covers it all: choosing and using tools and materials, capturing both still poses and motion, and completing exciting, skill-building projects. “Detailed and engaging projects. Highly recommended.”—Library Journal.
Customer Reviews:
It's overpriced.......2006-06-20
"The Beginner's Guide to Drawing People" by Patricia Monahan
It is way overpriced. Besides, offering a drawing book that offers FEMALE nude studies, and neglects entirely, MALE nude studies, does not make the book a bargain, especially when it is titled "Drawing PEOPLE". If a book is about drawing PEOPLE, shouldn't there be MALE people as well?
This book has 216 pages. That's twice the number of pages that most figure drawing books have, and the FOUR authors still limit it to nude female anatomy? Is that sexist, or merely neglectful?
The best "instructional" books always come from the singular vision of one author. Sure enough, this book has a "fractured" feel.
Book Description
Lucy Watson provides beginning artists with the fundamentals they need to render realistic, skillful drawings of people. She begins with an easy-to-follow overview of anatomy, then simplifies the challenging elements of perspective. Step-by- step exercises enable readers to learn as they draw, ensuring that every lesson is fun and gratifying.
Watson takes readers to the next level with clear, concise guidelines for rendering mass, volume, light and tone. They'll also find invaluable tips and techniques for working with color and developing a composition.
Finally, the book focuses on rendering accurate features, with guidelines for heads, eyes, noses, mouths, ears, hair, hands and feet.
Lucy Watson graduated from Central Saint Martin's College of Art & Design in London, England, with an undergraduate degree in Fine Art and a Masters in Advanced Printmaking. Highly experienced in all media, she makes her living as a freelance painter and illustrator. Her drawing, prints, and paintings have been exhibited at prestigious venues all over Europe. Lucy is the author of The Artist's Sketchbook. She lives in Kent, England.
Customer Reviews:
This is STRANGE. Watson has a similar book out same year???.......2004-06-29
"Draw and Sketch Figures: Sketch with Confidence in 6 Steps or less" by Lucy Watson 2003:
This book is odd, because Watson just authored "Life Drawing Class" published 2003 as well (and reviewed here on Amazon also). Two books published in the same year, on essentially the same subject. This is STRANGE, for the implication must be that either book was inadequate in the first place, or both books are erratic and desperate attempts to give good art instruction in the hopes that one actually will.
The promise of "6 Steps" is gimmicky and misleading. Considering the author's additional qualification of "...OR LESS" in the title. I mean, Come on! This is basic and beginning sketching. So is it "SIX LESSONS", or is it FIVE? If the author does NOT know what business does the author have teaching? I believe a horse can count to SIX. This kind of mental indecision and vagueness suggests that the author loves to read his own "expansive" wordings, and hear his own grandiose intonations, in spite of the fact that his words lack specific meaning.
Just as in Watson's previously reviewed book, this one commits the cardinal sin of giving COLOR instruction half way through, and at only 112 pages to start with, the buyer can be assured that this book is very, VERY short on good, useful, drawing instruction. Just one more hastily slapped together book of "beginning" instruction at a rip-off price.
The illustrations are, as in Watson's other book, stiff, lifeless, and inarticulate. With a list price of $19.99, "Draw and Sketch Figures" is going to give "Drawing On The Right Side of My Ambition" some competition in wallet-gouging. So I wonder if the author or publisher would mind if you offered a payment like this:
Book Description
Profusely illustrated volume provides thorough exposition of fundamental stages in executing a figure drawing — from simple standing and seated figures to more complex ones: bending, kneeling, twisting and crouching figures. Over 175 illustrations accompany demonstrations, showing how to establish major forms, refine lines for increased accuracy, more.

80 pages just too short.......2004-07-01
"Figure Drawing Step by Step" by Wendon Blake, Dover Publications, $7.95 ISBN0486402002
Wendon Blake does a good job as far as his handling of the subject goes, and Dover books are often a tremendous bargain, as in this case at a price of $7.95. Anyone can afford to buy this book.
Wendon Blake offers good instruction and there are even a couple pages of innovation in his method. However, at only 80 pages, this paperback is TOO brief a treatment of drawing, when it really is good enough to justify another 30 pages of illustration and detail. There are other books with much more illustration and drawing instruction as well, at a price not much more than Dover's to give this book a higher rating. Otherwise, it's a pretty good book.
figure drawing step by step.......2000-07-04
this artist also did THE FEMALE FIGURE and was one of my best reference drawing books when I designing clothing or wanted to remodel a dress. I used to own it and have been trying to get another. Uldis Klavins the author acrylics and oils step by step. this and the others of the Grumbacher Library of Step By Step books are a must for serious artists. There are various artist.Larry Oottino,Joseph Maniscaico,Don Stivers,James Mitchell,Jack Seidbotham, etc. The subjects are varied from landscapes, seascappes, animals, cartoons, watercolors, oils arylic, pastels etc. The best of the best.

Customer Reviews:
extremely helpful.......2007-04-21
I wish I had found this book 20 books ago. The simplified figure is extremely helpful to say the least and together with the Bargue, and the Hogarth dynamic figure, I believe you have everything you need to draw the human figure from your imagination. It's a shame it's out of print, but I believe it was worth every penny I spent for it. Forget the overpriced goldfugue and such...this is the one you need.
One Possible Starting Point.......2005-09-26
Uses a system of a properly constructed stick figure to rough in your ideas, from which a finished figure can be built up. I find this speeds the process of sorting ideas, working up thumbnails, and roughing in crowd scenes, though I still rely on Hogarth for anything beyond that point. If Hogarth's dynamism (his trees writhe with energy) doesn't sit well with you, this big book is a passable alternative, though it does not cover as much as _Dynamic Figure Drawing_ does: things like foreshortening, the extremely tucked figure, or female [...] are not covered. A little too much time is spent on detailing small bones and deep muscles that make no difference in the drawing of what is visible.
extremely practical and helpful.......1998-07-15
This is the first book I'd recommend to anyone wanting to study artistic anatomy. After slogging through other anatomy books,I found this one explaining everything I needed to know with simplicity and thoroughness. Not that other books are without merit, but this is the place to start. A treasure if you can find it!
