I checked this out at the library and after looking at it closely knew that I needed my own copy. I don't have a lot of experience with other wire work jewelry books, but I could see instantly that this one is a prize. Great ideas and they are beautifully shown and described.

Book Description
An illustrated guide to embellishing dolls with beads
Beading, one of the oldest forms of craft, is also a hot new trend and being used in new applications. Beadwork, which has typically been used in fashion, home decoration, and jewelry, is reaching for new horizons and showing up on quilts, journals, knits, crochet, and fiber arts of all kinds. In this book, author Patti Medaris Culea and beading experts Anne Hesse and Laura McCabe illustrate new ways of using various bead techniques to embellish the cloth doll. Sections include the basics of beadwork, beaded flowers for her hair, bead embroidered faces, starbursts (using crystals to enhance the figure), and wings and things (creating wings, crowns, and shoes with beads). Each chapter presents a different type of beading application in detail, with full instructions. Techniques are highlighted with step-by-step photos. A gallery of interpretations of the same pattern by leading artists is included for further inspiration.

Review for Creative Cloth Doll Beading.......2007-08-07
I love all of Patti Medaris Culea's books. I find her books to be well written and the illustrations are beautiful and inspiring. A basic knowledge of sewing and jewelry design would be helpful to understand some of the techniques. The dolls in the book have sparked my imagination to design my own unique creations. Great book.
The Best Yet.......2007-08-06
This is Patti's best book yet. It is colorful and thourough. The directions are easy to follow and the sample figures by other artists really help get the creative juices flowing. Art doll artists need this book in their libraries.
Another book from Patti Medaris Cukea.......2007-07-29
Patti M.C. knows everything there is to know about making dolls. This is another book in which she shares her knowledge. Not for beginners. Read her other books first.

Jewelry making and Beading for Dummies.......2007-08-04
I checked out 50 jewelry making books from the library and this is one of only three that I decided I wanted to purchase for my personal book collection. It covers a huge amount of information in detail as well as giving good outside sources to go to for further instruction. This book has been a great resource for me and I highly recommend it for both beginers and more experienced jewelry makers.
Helpful, Hopeful, Happy.......2007-08-03
I have used this book so many times I actually have post-it flags on many of the pages. Whenever in doubt, I pull this book out. It has been most helpful in starting my beading experience and still find it most useful.

Customer Reviews:
A must have for any bead collector!.......2007-06-27
A wonderful and very desciptive history of beads. Excellent quality photos, this book can used to help the novice or the serious bead collector.
Excellent photos, difficult reading.......2006-01-16
Although the photos of beads are excellent, I found this book far too much like a PhD dissertation, with the feel of a synthesis, having substance but written in a format which was difficult to read. Bibliographic references imbedded in the text just add to the unreadable style. The text is painfully lacking in the kind of information I appreciate, such as dating, geography, and clear references to the individual beads presented in the photos. And references to values of beads in dollars has no relevant meaning unless there is a time reference. As a reference book I would rate it of minimal worth. As a coffee table amusement it is acceptable, but would need far more photos to make it useful for that purpose.
Beautiful Book But Not For Beginners.......2000-10-29
This is a beautifully written, beautifully illustrated book, however, it is definitely for the advanced bead collector. Its main focus is on beads the average person could not find or afford. I am a beginner in the bead collecting world and needed a book that was more of an identifying guide. The chances of me running across a bead that was illegally excavated from an archeological dig in a foreign country are slim..and I wouldn't know what to do with it anyway. I'm returning the book and continuing the search.
A stunning work of art........2000-07-22
This is a work of immense proportions. Robert Liu is both a scholar and an artist. This is a work which draws on both sets of skills, and the result is wonderful. For bead lovers it's a definative work. As a scholarly piece, it likely has material of interest to those interested in art history and world culture as well. It's an important book and one that would be sorely missed if it ever went out of print--I say this as one who's passed on books like this, only to search the world over for them when they were no longer available...get this one now. You won't regret it.
An outstanding and invaluable book for all bead lovers.......1998-03-18
Robert K. Liu is one of the foremost authorities today in the field of collectible beads. In this book he gives clear and succinct insight regarding collectible beads from all over the world. In some cases he gives approximate monetary values, but the book is mostly a celebration by someone who knows as to the place which beads have played in cultures around the world from ancient times to the present. A necessary help for anyone who collects or is thinking of collecting beads. It will save time and money.

Customer Reviews:
Great book. Excellent ideas.......2007-08-06
This is a gem of a book. It has a lot of great ideas on how to build up your company and get things moving. Being a graphic designer by training I know all about branding and creating an image. So that was the one of the first things that I did. But most of the other ideas were new to me and very useful. I have a large room in which my workshop is situated, but I hadn't really considered turning a portion of it into a gallery. But it's a great idea and I am now in the process of doing just that. The advice on getting into boutiques is also very good. I would say this little book is well worth the price and I recommend it highly to any aspiring jeweler. I would also say that the advice is probably good for other crafters and artisans.
Informative.......2007-07-21
This book was incredibly informative! Aside from Viki Laureau's firt-hand experience, the examples of other artists' portfolios, ideas, etc are very helpful. She did a great job of writing this book for the layman who might not have a strong background in business/economics. It's a nice step-by-step guide to get you on you feet.
Really useful.......2007-04-24
This book has heaps of useful information. I found the information very helpful when I was setting up my jewelry site and planning for my marketing strategy. Inspiring and well worth the money.
Fantastic book!.......2007-04-12
Easy read...very inspiring!! I read the book in less than 2 hours and now I feel like I know what I need to do to start selling. Great resources at the end, too!
Marketing and selling your handmade jewelry..........2007-04-12
The book answered all my questions of pricing and how to get started on a small or large scale. Compact, informative, and quick reading.
Book Description
Jewelry making is one of the most popular craft trends, and its audience continues to grow. Few jewelry books on the market emphasize the importance of the design relationship between beads, wire, and jewelry findingsthe nuts and bolts of any piece. This book will show not only how to design and build your own spectacular jewelry out of beads and wire but how to design and create your own findings as well.
Most jewelry making books are geared for the beginner and provide little information for intermediate to advanced jewelry makers.
Making Designer Bead and Wire Jewelry contains illustrated how-to techniques, full-color project photos, project instructions, and numerous tips that enhance the styles and skills presented. Intermediate and advanced jewelry makers will learn new techniques for creating signature elements for their designs, while beginners will get a handle on honing their skills.

A good guide.......2007-07-25
I bought this book as a gift for my mother. She has found it useful, easy to understand. It is full of photographs and illustrations of all the procedures and so it is very "user friendly".
Dressed-up beginner's book ...'Bead on a Wire' recommended instead........2007-06-08
I was disappointed with this book because it had the same info with less design ideas, as 'Bead on a Wire' by Sharilyn Miller. To be fair, if I had bought this book first, instead of vice-a-versa, I might not have felt as let down as I was; but, I don't think so...
All the wire designs seem to be based on one theme--the two, three or four 'Loop Eye' headpin, and how to string beads.
The book should have BEGINNER'S somewhere on the front cover. If you have already have a book listing the basic tools & techniques, you don't need this one.
Fil from LYF Designs.......2007-06-02
This is an excellent book for beginners with beautiful but simple designs to inspire
nothing exicting.......2007-05-01
I enjoy reading beadwork books and have over 100 books. Most of them are Japanese, Korean and Chinese bead books, which mainly focus on stringing and are quite different from the beadwork in US. Then I was thinking to read more about wirework books and decided to get some from Amazon...
After reading the previous reviews, I thought this one might be good... But I must say that it is very disappointing... The instruction is OK and somewhat too simple and you can find similar info via internet...
The projects and the gallery are not exciting at all. (If you look closer at the pictures, the quality of some projects are really lousy.)... Many commercial online bead suppliers have much better design gallery... Another complaint is the instruction drawing. It seems there isn't a consistency to show the dominant hand and non-dominant hand ( which is important to use the tool , I think...)
If you are a very beginner, probably the best wirework book you should consider is "All wired up" by Mark Lareau. If you like step-by-step photography, I think "Getting Started Making Wire Jewelry and More " by Linda Chandler and Christine R. Ritchey is a good pick.
I would not purchase this book if I wasn't too lazy to check it out at a local Michael's.
Great book!!.......2007-02-10
Very good for anyone wanting to work with wire but might have been a little afraid. I am a beginner and it is awesome in its details and drawings for making findings and jewelry. I like all the practical jewelry pieces shown as well and have already made some of them.

Good book for all.......2007-09-27
This is a great book for anyone who loves beading. I have been beading for a number of years and find that you sometimes get stuck with "your colours". This book is great for getting you to move outside your zone without having to think too hard. Also has beautiful jewelry which will inspire your own creativeness
great addition to beading library!.......2007-08-23
I was very pleased with this book though I'll admit I am a bit jaded, having been a devotee of Margie Deeb's book[ASIN:0823004872 The Beader's Guide to Color]for several years. That being said, there are many reasons to suggest Ms Wallace's book. Her 30 page chapter on color theory covered nearly everything the average beader needs to know, short of a semester coarse of study. The vast array of innovative color themes are full of fresh and inspiring ideas. There are a fair number of projects included in the last chapter that demonstrate to the reader, through illustration, how each project would look in three of four different color combinations. Personally, however, I feel the best part of this book lies in the color scheme chapter. Here the author includes a useful graphic with each sample of beadwork, clearly showing the percentages of each color used.
As a beading teacher, I will refer my students over and over to this book for that simple addition alone! As a beader and designer, I'm sure I will find many reasons to choose Ms Wallace's book from my personal library shelves when I need help with a project.
Wonderful book with lots of eye candy!.......2007-08-19
I've been beading for a few years, but always feel like I struggle with color choices. Recently I purchased Margie Deeb's book, but felt like I still wanted more information, so I also just bought Sandra Wallace's book. While they do cover some of the same information, they are a wonderful complement to each other, and I'm so glad that I now have both of them.
As other reviewers have mentioned, this book is divided into three sections. The first section talks about color theory and how to use a color wheel to create interesting color combinations. While Deeb's book uses the CYM color wheel, Wallace's book uses the standard color wheel.
In the second section of the book, Wallace provides over 150 examples of various projects from other bead artists that are grouped according to various color schemes (with titles like Volcano, Floral Fantasy, Faded Roses, etc.). It is in this second section of the book where Wallace provides the details about the percentage of beads used in each project. This section alone is worth the cost of the book! The samples are just wonderful, and Wallace explains how each one uses the color theory (analogous, complementary, etc.) she had discussed in Part 1. This section has such wonderful eye candy, and I know I will be going back to it many times in the future for inspiration.
The third section of the book has 10 sample projects, complete with instructions. Each of those 10 projects also has diagrams for how to make that project using other color combinations so you can really see how changing the color scheme affects the overall look of your piece.
All in all, this is a wonderful book, and I'm definitely glad I purchased it!
Inspiration Galore!.......2007-08-15
I bought this even thought I have Margie Deeb's "A Beader's Guide to Color" and I'm very glad I did. While Deeb's book concentrates a lot on theory Wallace's is packed with actual beadwork pieces of every style to demonstrate her color combinations. Every photo is broken down into the percent of each color used, making it easy to translate her color balances into your own designs.
If you're looking for a basic how-to book, this one's not for you. No beading instructions are given, only a brief mention of the stitch(es)use in the piece being discussed. However, those with some experience under their belt will find themseles returning again and again for a fresh look at using different color combinations. This book is a great source of inspiration.
The Best Beader's Color Theory Book Ever.......2007-08-02
This is the book I've been looking for forever! I love making things, but I have a terrible eye for color. Now I understand what does and doesn't work AND WHY. This book starts with the basics that many of us probably already know. The color wheel. If you're already familiar with the color wheel, just skip the first chapter. The rest of the book is still pure gold. It goes into color schemes, explaining in simple language, what works and why. It tells you how to get pleasing color combinations using few or many colors together. The truly unique aspect of this book is the information telling you what PROPORTIONS make these color schemes work. At the bottom of each page teaching a color scheme, there is a bar that is divided into sections. Each section shows how much of one color to use. It's a visual representation for the percentage of each color in the scheme. The info is also provided as a percentage number. Those who have difficulty working with percents will have no trouble understanding because percents are explained as it would apply to beading. For example it tells you that 10% of this bead means that if you have 100 beads, 10 of them would be this color, 24% of the second color would mean that 24 beads out of that 100 bead pile would be the second color, etc. Finally, the last section gives 10 projects, each using one of the schemes taught in the book. The projects use the color schemes but each also shows you how you can change it. For example, how to change the given color scheme from a predominately green project to a predominately purple one. The projects themselved aren't easily followed if you're a beginner, but again, the book is pure gold. All the photos and illustrations are very well done. I this book it to a class taught by a nationally known jewelry instructor and she was very impressed. Enough so that she wrote the title and author so that she could refer students to it! If color combinations are your issue this is the one and only book you need on the subject.

Customer Reviews:
Terrific for begiining fabric beader.......2007-09-23
This is a great reference book for the beginning beader. The techniques are clear and concise and the authors photos of her work are terrific.
Inspiring.......2007-08-31
This book was a real inspiration for me to try free-form bead embroidery. The information on supplies and techniques is helpful, but I found the pictures of her work were the most valuable part of the book, giving me all sorts of ideas to try in my own beading.
Some might think this book is only a showcase of one beader's work, and it is, but that is what makes it useful.
Disappointed.......2007-05-30
I was disappointed in this book. The cover is deceiving. Not my taste at all. the service was excellent though.
Great book.......2006-11-04
Good diagrams of the various stitches. Delicious eye candy. It seemed to be mostly for standalone pieces. Not too many garment samples.
Great addition.......2006-08-31
This book was more along the lines I was looking for in fabric beading. Instructions were clear, pictures beautiful and had lots of detail. I will enjoy using this book.
Book Description
With this gloriously photographed and illustrated manual at hand, beaders can create awe-inspiring jewelry. It's the only current, comprehensive guide to working with cabochons--a flat piece of rock or mineral--and it covers all the basics, along with a range of new creative techniques and hot trends. Find out which tools and materials to use, which beads work best, and how to wrap them round the stones. Craft turned, pointed, twisted, brick stitch, ruffled, or scalloped edges, or add decorative fringe. For something dramatic, combine more than one cabochon in a single piece. Or, instead of natural stone, use dichroic glass or other found objects. Make a glittering brooch, funky bracelets, a wearable art necklace, and other showstoppers.
Customer Reviews:
Great Choice.......2007-09-25
I highly recommend this book, which has step-by-step instructions with diagrams and information as to where to purchase materials. I'm new to beading cabochons and I've made two projects, thus far, both look great.
Beaded bezels for cabochons.......2007-09-18
This book is very well done and explains all kinds of edgings, and techniques for bead-edged cabochon jewelry. It is good for learning techniques, different edgings, and also has attractive projects.
If you like to work with cabochons, make embellished beaded necklaces, you will enjoy this book. If you like modern, streamlined, geometric, precious metal jewelry, this is not the book for you.
Oh WOW!!!!.......2007-09-07
I was totally stunned by this book! I have been wanting to learn to do this for some time now, but could never find a book I really liked. Until this one. WOW! Everything about this book is superb--photos, directions, diagrams, ideas, writing...everything. I was blown away by the quality of the directions in particular.
The directions are clear and concise. You WILL be able to make a beautiful cabochon right from the very start. The photographs are outstanding, and as mentioned in another review, each one tells you exactly what techniques were used to make it. It's not a guessing game. My first cabochon came out PERFECT. My second one came out perfect. So did the third! I was so thrilled at--YES, I will say it--how EASY making a beaded cabochon really is. Many, many books have directions that are adequate, but need to be read and re-read several times before you understand exactly what you're supposed to be doing. Not this one! This is probably the least frustrated I've ever been at learning to do something new.
If you want to make a beaded cabochon this is THE book to buy. If you even think you might want to learn to make a beaded cabochon, this is the book to buy. If you've tried to do this before and were less than successful, this is the book to buy. This is the book that sets the standard. You won't be disappointed.
THE BEST!!!.......2007-08-27
This is an excellent book! The pictures are great! Instructions are very detailed and specific. Great project ideas, too.
I Can Bead with Cabochons!.......2007-08-21
Not all how-to books can actually get you to the desired end result, but this one does. The projects are beautiful, the photos are inspiring, and the instructions are thorough and well-written. Just wonderful!
