art stamping workshop.......2007-09-02
This book is my new stamp carving bible! The projects are inspiring and there are no hard to find tools required. Thanks to the detailed instructions carving a stamp from an eraser is easier than carving a pumpkin. A great book.
Takes practice.......2007-01-03
It's a neat book. But I need to work at doing more stamps more often.
A Stamping & Carving "Must Have"!.......2006-11-27
If you need some inspiration, I strongly advise reading this book. Before reading the book, I didn't understand and was very intimdated about carving. After reading Art Stamping Workshop, I am now carving and printmaking!! I also teach this form of art in various schools and art stores.
One of the reasons I advise my students and online members to read this book, is because it is both teachable and progressive. It is an excellent book to study for classes, workshops, and personal study. With each technique, Gloria Page teaches in a way that you are bound to understand, and you are not left in the dark or in confusion in any way.
In an online group that I host -Artists of the Round Table- we read this book from cover to cover, and tried each of the projects. "ALL" of the member LOVED it.....adults, as well as the children!!! Gloria Page was kind enough to make herself available during the workshop to answer any questions, and to give advise and commendation. What an "encouragement" this was to the members studying her book!
Loving author.....AWESOME book. A perfect combination!
Sincerely,
~Jacqueline F. Graham

THE book for stamp carving!.......2006-06-27
If you are interested in learning how to carve your own art rubber stamps then you need this book as well as The Weekend Crafter:Rubber stamp carving.
Both books provide clear cut instructions on how to carve your own stamps to make artistic and fun stamps that are one of a kind. But this book is much better of the two and I'd suggest this one if you can only buy one book on the subject of stamp carving.
The projects in this book are lovely, artistic and not cutesy or cookie cutter similar to everything out there. You will easily be able to begin carving right away with this book alone. Well worth the 15 bucks here on Amazon! I recommend it.
5 stars!
Thank you, Gloria Page!.......2006-06-20
I have always wanted to make my own art stamps but never knew how or where to begin. Thanks to Art Stamping Workshop, all of my questions have been answered! After reading this fabulous book, I was able to create a stamp from items I had around the house. Gloria's instructions are easy to follow and the photos clearly show how each step is supposed to look as you go along. Gloria Page makes stamp carving easy and FUN! The variety of projects in this book are different from anything I have seen in other stamping books and are easily adaptable to any style.

Excellent reference book.......2002-01-04
This book is an excellent reference source for working in papier mache and paper clay. The photos and instructions are very detailed. I have recommended this book many times and bought it as a gift. Beautiful photos and lots of inspiration.
FABULOUS, GREAT INSTRUCTIONS!!!!.......2001-08-03
DOLLMAKING WITH PAPIER MACHE & PAPER CLAY HAS COMPLETELY CHANGED MY IDEA OF HOW TO BOOKS. THIS BOOK IS NOT ONLY HOW TO MAKE DOLL CRAFTS, BUT HAS OTHER BRIGHT & BEAUTIFUL CREATIONS TO MAKE; SUCH AS A LARGE 26" RABBIT & AN ADORABLE GOAT.COMPLETE,EASY TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS ARE GIVEN. I LOVE THIS BOOK.
a delightful and long awaited dollmaking book!.......2001-07-31
This book is illustrated with many magnificent and easily followed directions. You can really make a doll that is more meaningful then all others because you have made it with your own hands. The authors step by step instructions are so simple to follow! Your finished product is your own masterpiece, thanks to Doris. Bravo, Doris.
Okay for Paper MacHe.......2001-07-22
I'm not really interested in Paper MacHe but I've been a dollmaker for quite some time and am very interested in learning more about Paperclay. There is another book that is supposedly the best for Paperclay - "Sculpting Doll in Paperclay" by Robert McKinley but it's sold out and difficult to find - so I opted for this one. I found this book to be fairly similar in techinique to many other dollmaking books in other media. There wasn't all that much that made it stand apart. I guess if you're very interested in Paper MacHe, then this is the book for you. If you're wanting to learn more about Paperclay techniques, skip this book and look for the one by McKinley instead.
Great for the beginner, enough technical, great instructions.......1999-09-06
I am new to doll-making but not paper mache. I found I was moving to dolls and came across this book. It's very good technically and the photos are excellent. The methods are great and well thought out and explained. I have just begun playing with the paper clay product and this gives it a good testimonial. Good job! Also, Ms. Gottilly's dolls are fabulous!

Nearly everyone seems to have countless photographs languishing in boxes and drawers or in tired, old photo albums or scrapbooks. The New Photocrafts by Suzanne Tourtillot demonstrates that there are plenty of ways to move beyond using these traditional methods to preserve and enjoy your photos. Forty projects by a team of two dozen talented designers employ photographic prints, photocopies, image transfers onto both fabric and polymer clay, and digital photos, yielding such items as lamp shades, switch plates, frames, pillows, pins, boxes, journals, and tote bags.
Background information is provided on each general technique, along with step- by-step instructions for every project. There's also a brief but useful introduction to taking better photographs. Some directions could have used more careful editing (one project, for example, calls for highlighting textured areas of clay with paint but doesn't describe making the textured surface in the first place; the instructions also neglect to specify that the object must be placed in the oven to bake). Nevertheless, the lessons overall are adequate for creating these mostly interesting and sometimes innovative designs, which range from simple to advanced, in styles from childlike to sophisticated. --Amy Handy
Book Description
You can do so much with your stash of memorable images. Fabric transfers are a particularly popular idea, or transfer photos to polymer clay with this first-ever discussion of a fabulous new skill. Enter the digital world to manipulate photos, or try creative photocopying, direct scanning, blueprinting, découpage, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Not very exciting.......2002-04-19
While not completely without merits, The New Photo Crafts was a big disappointment from a publisher (Lark Books) whose books are usually exciting and interesting, both visually and instructionally. The book begins with a quick overview of photography methods, types of film & cameras, and an intro-duction to taking a "good" picture. The first chapter is perfunctory and uninspiring, but is okay as a basic (very basic) overview to get the reader started. This book, however, lacks the usual quality, visual and instructional excitement usually found in Lark books. Many of the projects are very shoddily put together: Anniversary Couple Commemorative Portrait is very roughly cut out around the edges as is the diorama photo on page 35. These projects look amateurish and slapped together. The refrigerator photo frame magnets are insultingly basic--just pieces of cut out felt with a photo sandwiched in between and a magnet glued to the back. Any half-way intelligent or talented crafter could come up with that one out on their own. The School Friends Frame was another project that was amateurish, unattractive and completely uninspiring: Photocopied, individual portrait photos of schoolmates, placed around the perimeter of a sheet of white paper with a child's drawing in the center and the whole thing plopped into a clip frame. How exciting is that to "create" to anyone more skilled than a grade schooler? The Fabric Photo Album was a mess. The fabrics and findings appeared slapped together with no thought to composition, color or pleasing arrangement. The first line in the instructions, ironically, says to "Take the time to plan the design." Perhaps the designer of this project should have taken her own advise. The book is not completely without merits, however, and there are some projects that are interesting. The lampshade project is funky and fun, and could be adapted to any size shade and fixture, with endless themes. The Flip Books are a fun project, and the Carmen Miranda doll is a real fun, funky way to use a photograph in an unexpected way. I liked the light switch plate a lot--it has clear instructions, and many possibilities depending on the type of room and photo used. The polymer clay transfers are another great idea. There are quite a few ideas for different handmade cards and folding book-type cards that are nice, too. But overall, in my opinion, this book was not worthy of the Lark name, and I couldn't recommend it to crafters who are more advanced or who are looking for something really original.
Surprisingly Good!.......2001-08-15
This book was so much better than I thought it would be. I expected the usual tacky, cliche photo crafts, but that was not the case. There were quite a few ideas I had not seen before (and I have a LOT of craft books) and lots of other projects that were nicely updated to the tastes of today's more sophisticated crafter. I especially liked the "Vintage Print Quilt" which can easily be done by those of us that don't sew, as it's all zigzag stitching. The author uses a number of different photo materials and methods in her projects -regular photographs and prints, photocopies, image transferring to fabric and polymer clay, digital photographs and hand-colouring photos. I haven't read all the text, so I can't say if it's well written, or not, but many of the projects certainly look interesting. You will not be disappointed.

I have a number of books on paper mache, and have worked with the medium for several years. This book is far and away the best of the bunch in terms of ideas, techniques, and instructions.
The Contemporary Craft of Paper Mache.......2000-05-12
Paper Mache is not just for children anymore! I love this book. The book has easy to follow instructions. The projects are great. This is a must for all paper macher's and want-to-be paper macher's.
Sophisticated, contemporary artistry from paper........1998-05-06
This book is for the sculptor in you. The authors describe all of the materials used in the craft and present the pros and cons of each. Bravo! There is a good deal of information in its chapters, but the writing is so clear, it is quite easy to undersand. The photos of finished objects d'art present the projects literally in their best light. The photos are also accompanied by illustrations in 3-D. It's a beautiful book presenting the indigenous, the contemporary, and the commonplace in forms that the papier mache crafter can do. I found the the "how to" sections to be outstanding.

Ceramic Clay Variation Worth Knowing About - Great Book.......2005-07-29
This is a useful great book about "paper clay". However, the editorial description of this book doesn't quite tell you what "paper clay" is, so here is a nuts and bolts description: Paper clay is ceramic clay (slip or dry powder+water) that has had some percentage of fiber mixed into it, which produces a product with very interesting properties. The fibers can be paper, or refractory such as ceramic fiber.
Because of the intermixed fibers, the unfired clay is stronger and can be manipulated when very thin, so it facilitates new kinds of clay sculpting. Additionally, because the fiber provides a sort of scaffolding that prevents shrinkage, "paper clay" can be used in new ways that traditional clay cannot, such as adding on to or repairing already bisqued pots. There is lots more, and it is all well discussed in this book, with some mention in the editorial description.
The style of the book is NOT that of a craft recipe book, it is a thorough discussion of paper clay usage and variations, firing issues, fiber sources, steps in making and using, etc. There are specific charts and tables in the appendix.
The topic is definitely worth five stars to anyone who works in clay. The only reason I am giving it four stars instead of five is that I can imagine even more comprehensive coverage, especially of use of castable refractory fiber -- other than that, it is worth five stars. But it is definitely an informative and useful book, which benefits from being the successor of several previous books on the topic by the same author.
NOTE: There is a commercial product called "Paper Clay" which seems to be some sort of air-dry paper mache. The paper clay in this book is entirely different, a ceramic material which requires kiln firing.

More for the Artsy Stamper..........2003-02-16
This is a wonderful resource, but frankly, for the more "artsy" stamper. I love the projects, techniques, and looks shown here, but if you're looking for clean and simple, this is not it. Not that the techniques are difficult -- they aren't -- it's just that the looks are very elegant. The book shows stamping on everything -- clothes, paper, clay, umbrellas, and more. You can transfer the techniques from these to other media if you know what you are doing and aren't afraid to try something new. Everything from funky to renaissance...Nice stuff, I like it, maybe you will, too.

Book Description
The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr. has become the definitive record of the most significant correspondence, sermons, speeches, published writings, and unpublished manuscripts of one of America's best-known advocates for peace and justice. Threshold of a New Decade, Volume V of the planned fourteen-volume series, illustrates the growing sophistication and effectiveness of King and the organizations he led while providing an unparalleled look into the surprising emergence of the sit-in protests that sparked the social struggles of the 1960s.
During this pivotal period of his career, King traveled to India in early 1959 to meet with Prime Minister Nehru and other associates of Mahatma Gandhi. After returning to Montgomery, King confronted the continuing ineffectiveness of his Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) by demanding personnel changes and agreeing to relocate to Atlanta at the beginning of 1960. King's move took place just before African American students in the South reclaimed the energy of the Montgomery bus boycott with their bold sit-in protests, which King predicted would become "an integral part of the history which is reshaping the world, replacing a dying order with modern democracy." He was arrested in October after participating in a sit-in protest in Atlanta. His resulting imprisonment led presidential candidate John F. Kennedy to phone his sympathies to King's wife, Coretta, a move many credit for providing the margin of victory in the close election of 1960.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful..........2006-02-02
Volume V provides an in-depth look at the sit-in protests of the early 1960's and Martin Luther King, Jr.'s trip to India. There are many unpublished letters to/from a variety of people-all adding insight to the psyche of Dr. King's non-violent struggle; and his late involvement in the 1960 election of John F. Kennedy.
