5 out of 5 stars For Artists, Collectors, and Lovers of Beauty.......2007-03-24

This books is simply magically. I purchased it in hopes of improving my understanding of painting flowers, in order to really bring my fantasy artwork to life. It was all that I hoped for and more, showcasing the beautiful work of some of the most renowned watercolor flower artists.

Each artist has a section that displays a sampling of their work, along with excerpts from their sketchbooks. These sketchbooks are accompanied by lovely notes regarding the artist's process and thoughts during creation. There is also a short section containing each artist's favorite paint colors, etc.

A truly enjoy book for the artist, whether beginner or advanced as well as for the lover of flowers and art. Also comes with a few postcards in the back for you to paint on. A delight!

Artists and examples were not as varied as I would have liked. It lends itself more to keeping a watercolor flower journal than for techniques on painting floral pictures.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and fun even for a crusty old artist.......2006-03-10

Watercolor for the Artistically Undiscovered has been a fun workbook for our whole family. My daughter received one for a gift and it was so entertaining we had to order two more so everyone could sit and do it together. The book's layout is in page by page exercises that might inspire further fun and thinking, as well as build on each other to create a more versatile way of looking at painting. In my opinion, the most fun part is being able to paint in a book and even cut out parts and glue them elsewhere. Kids have a chance to breakout from the usual parental mantra of "Be sure not to write in the book, watch out with the paint...". The pages are very sturdy and good quality and the author's sense of humour is wonderful. I have my very own copy to play in, which is sometimes just the thing to inspire me in my own work. And well, there is something about turning squiggles into bugs....

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2004-07-16

This is a great place to start. The paints and paper provided are 1st class quality allowing serious exploration, and the excerises are fun. Add a few more colors - dark green and light blue- and a extra, nicer brush, and there is no better way to start

5 out of 5 stars If you are a beginner (like I am) get this book!.......2001-05-28

I am extremely intimidated by painting, so I took baby steps and bought this book. It comes with some beautiful watercolors that are rich and color--and a brush as well.

They start you off with painting some small pictures, even blobs if you are comfortable with it, and you will be amazed to see how much your lil paintings look like paintings instead of a piece of crap (which is what i expected---can i say crap?) anyway, they give you pages where you can "play" and you don't start color mixing and other frightening things until later.

Later on, you do landscapes and play around with some light and shadow. Its like the fisher price version of learning to paint!! Sometimes, my pictures blended in with their little pictures along the way, which made me happy. They just turn something very scary, into something a lil more easy.

If you run out of paints or brushes, or you want some more paper, there's a phone number in the back you can call to order some more!! I love klutz products, cause I am one!! Highly recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars Scared of watercolors? Paint this book!.......1997-06-15

This fun, whimsical book takes the mystery and frustration out of painting with watercolors. Learn watercolor basics by following the book's simple instructions and then practicing alongside on its watercolor-paper pages. Witty sidebar commentator Thatcher Hurd adds humor to an otherwise indimidating process. Discover what makes you the best painter you know--paint this book and unmask your watercolor painting personality

3 out of 5 stars Watercolor WHAT?!?.......2003-01-23

Just bought this book, and can't express my disappointment enough! This book should have NEVER been titled "Watercolor Techniques"... They should have named it "Paint Watercolors With Jan".

I bought the book expecting techniques - that's what it is called, right?!? Maybe some rules on composition, some suggestions for value, and perhaps even some `rules of thumb' for planning a painting. But at a minimum, I expected TECHNIQUES!

Techniques are the things you do to make something happen. I figured there would be different techniques for brush control, different styles of washing color, suggestions for mixing color to get the results you want - you know... TECHNIQUES!!

Am I angry? Yes! Do I feel ripped off? Yes! Is this book worth buying? Yes - perhaps...

There are less than 10 pages of how to approach a painting. Most of these 10 pages are text, with many examples of Jan's beautiful paintings throughout. (But no TECHNIQUES!!!) The rest of the book is a step-by-step guide for how she completed several paintings. Pictures are plentiful, detail is complete, and she even includes drawings so you can try the same paintings shown step-by-step in the book!

But there aren't any TECHNIQUES!! I learned more about composition, lighting, color usage, and yes - TECHNIQUES - from Jan's excellent book, "Painting Beautiful Watercolors From Photographs". Now THAT is a darned good book!

Caveat emptor, right?!? Illegitimati non carborundum est...

3 out of 5 stars The abused child in the disturbed adult.......2007-09-08

The major claim of this book is that we can understand the the disturbed adult through understanding the abuse they have undergone as children from parents. I do not know if Miller makes this as a universal claim but she seems to be speaking for herself, and for a large number of people she has treated through the years. Her aim is a commendable one of healing through providing a means of self- expression for these repressed feelings of abuse.
This book contains a twenty- page essay explaining her point- of- view. The overwhelming body of the book is the drawings , her own work meant to illustrate the book's major thesis.
I could not make much of the paintings and I question the universal validity of her claim. But this does not in any way confound her subjective truth or life - experience.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre Paintings, But Some Interesting Tidbits In The Essay.......2007-01-11

This book is valuable, but only for the key bits of autobiographical information that Alice Miller reveals in the twenty-some-odd page essay. The rest of the essay (and preface) is just a quick rehash of her (brilliant) point of view, and the paintings, which make up the bulk of the book, are mediocre. She herself states that she painted them as part of her internal healing process - that is, for herself, not for an audience. This comes across. They lack the depth, clarity, message, and universality that place her in a league of her own as a psychological writer. I suspect that she (or her publisher) knew that, which is why she included the tantalizing writing. Had she not I wouldn't have bought the book, and I suspect I am not alone.

Book Description

A beautiful and unique boardbook which teaches children their colors via pieces of contemporary art by acclaimed artists, with short accompanying text that describes each artwork for the adult reader. For example, a beautiful silkscreen by Andy Warhol of field flowers highlights the color purple. The word purple is printed, in bold purple type, on the opposite page. The word purple is also translated into Spanish, French, German, and Japanese, which children find fascinating. A few sentences are given for the adult reader that describe Warhols motivation for this and other artworks.

Twelve colors and artworks are featured, as listed below. They represent pieces by the masters of contemporary art to emerging leaders; women and men; people of many ethnic backgrounds. Red - a dynamic, spiritual painting by Mark Rotho
Blue - a mystical assemblage piece by Betye Saar
Yellow - painting with human figures and words by Jean-Michel Basquiat
Orange - a rich, flowing painting by Sam Francis
Green - a room installation by Barbara Bloom
Purple - a silkscreen of flowers by Andy Warhol
White - a billboard of empty bed sheets by Felix Gonzalez-Torres
Black - a wooden sculpture by Louise Nevelson
Grey - a painting of the United States map by Jasper Johns
Brown - a wall of vintage suitcases by Hirokazu Kosaka
Pink - a geometric landscape painting by Richard Diebenkorn
Light Blue - a light and space, neon artwork by Doug Wheeler

5 out of 5 stars A total delight.......2002-07-09

The great thing about this books is that I TOTALLY disagree with the reviewer ...

The author has selected new and emerging artists instead of the tried and true. As a parent I enjoyed learning about new artists instead of sitting throught Intro to Art History again. My child has benefited from from learning her colors and being exposed to new artists.

1 out of 5 stars A total disappointment.......2002-06-12

I have ordered around 100 products ...and I have never been as disappointed as I was with this book and with The Art of Shapes. I bought them for a three year old child thinking that he would start getting acquainted with famous works of arts from all over the world. With a few exceptions the artists selected are completely unknown. There are millions of famous beautiful European and American masterpieces that would have been more suitable for a child. ...

5 out of 5 stars What I did not figure on was how much I would LOVE it........1999-04-20

I read about this book in a parenting magazine and thought that my baby daughter would enjoy it. My husband is an artist, so I thought that it would be a great book to teach her about art in a fun way. What I did not figure on was how much I would LOVE it. This book shows an artist's work in a specific color. It tells the artist's name and a brief description of their work. On the facing page, it tells the color, then translates the word into 3 other languages. It is short so it keeps my daughter's interest and she is facinated by the color. My husband and I have enjoyed talking about the art on the pages. Forget about the child wanting to look at the same book over and over again -- with this one, it is ME who wants to. I am buying the other two books in the series today.
