Good book for graphic beginners.......2007-07-05
I bought this book today after considering one other books. I needed a book on simple graphics. I have worked with Photoshop for a while but only for photo processing and need to learn more about graphics. I'm a very graphically challenged software developer (my 6 year old draws much better than me;) so I need every bit of help I can get;) However I'm going to return this book tomorrow for the other book I was looking at, Scott Kelby's "Adobe Photoshop CS Down & Dirty Tricks" as I found some omissions in the book that make it less useful than Scott's book. For example the section on creating a product box is only about placing the image on the box, but not about how to create the box. I need tutorials that take me step by step through how to make what I want to make. This file may be in the online archive for it, but I feel the book should have demonstrated the steps to create it.
I see some reviewers saying this book is garbage and for beginners. Well, it IS for beginners, which is why I bought it. But this book is definitely not garbage and there is a LOT of good stuff in it. It is aimed at a certain niche, which is people who want to start with something simple for their websites - pretty obvious from the title I'd think. If you are advanced user of PS for graphic work you will be disappointed, but IMO that's self inflicted since there is nothing that indicates that this book is for advanced users. For example there is a very good section on creating seamless tiles, something I have looked for in online tutorials for quite a while without much luck.
I give it 4 stars because it is lacking in some respects, but it does a good job overall. Just paging through it I have picked up quite a few ideas that I will be able to implement.
If you are creating or maintaining your own website and want to create some nice looking graphics for it but you are not familiar with creating graphics in Photoshop, this would be a good book. If you are looking for advanced book or bleeding edge graphic designs then this is probably not the book you are looking for.
Ultimate Photoshop book for BEGINNERS!!!!.......2007-05-25
This book is very basic. I was hoping to find some information on how to create interesting backgrounds and web graphic's instead I found garbage. If you have used photoshop for any amount of time this book is generic. I was very disappointed.
There are much better books that cover a much bigger range of photoshop tricks but I wasn't looking for tricks I was looking for a detailed book on designing things like web 2.0 buttons and backgrounds. If your looking for something like that turn around.
waste of money.......2007-03-14
I can write such book - only for losers who don't know nothing!!!
45$ they wanna at Site Point.. hm... what a shame that they didn't destroyed book when did it!!
Spend your money elsewhere
Jump Start!.......2007-03-13
Being relatively new to Photoshop, this book has proved very helpful. Everything is briefly and easily laid out for rapid application of content.
Great all-around PhotoShop Book.......2007-03-06
There are a whole lot oh Photoshop books out there teaching all sorts of cool stuff, but if you are graphically challenged like some people (like me) most of those books just stay on the bookshelf and never see the light of day. But his new book on Photoshop by Corrie Haffly makes sing Photoshop easy and actually fun.
Every page is in a workbook like format to make it easier to understand every concept with beautifully detailed screenshots and explanations. The author assumes no prior knowledge and takes the reader through the basics first and then goes through some very special exercises creating backgrounds, buttons, text formatting, image adjustment, and web site layout design.
Chapter 1 explains to the reader the basics of Photoshop:
Workspace, image file types, layers, toolbox and tools, palettes, saving preferences
Chapter 2 describes how to gain basic skills of manipulating images:
Placing artwork on your workspace, creating Smart Object, rasterizing objects, resizing a layer or selection, rotating an image or selection, creating curves, reusing vector shapes, adjusting layer transparency, fading an image into background, blending two images together, and adding a drop shadow
Chapter 3 shows you how to create different kinds of very cool buttons:
Flat buttons, smooth buttons, chiseled buttons, gradient button, button with matte finish, metallic buttons, shiny buttons, aqua button, glass buttons, and plastic button
Chapter 4 shows you how to create different kinds of tiled backgrounds:
Photographic backgrounds, striped background, pixel background, metal background, wood-grain background, textured stone background, and textured paper background
Chapter 5 shows you how to manipulate and add text to your images:
Adding single and multi-line text, increasing space between lines and letters of text, warping text, wrapping text around curved object, making text follow a path, making text glow, creating chisled or engraved text, and adding a show to text
Chapter 6 shows you techniques on adjusting your images:
Creating adjustment layers, adding tone adjustments and contrast, making colors more vivid, removing tint from photos, darkening areas on an image, fixing red-eye effect, converting images to black and white, and combining two different images
Chapter 7 shows you how to design a website from scratch in Photoshop.
This quick overview doesn't do this book justice of course, but it is a great book nevertheless. If you already a Photoshop user it is still a great book because there are so many things you can do in PhotoShop that it is impossible to know them all. So this can be either a great beginner - intermediate guide or a superb reference book for designers looking for a specific technique. A must buy!

A Treasure Chest of Productivity Tips.......2007-10-03
It is not surprising, considering the fact that Lynn Allen is the Technical Evangelist for Autodesk and that she meets with thousands of AutoCAD users every year, that once again her book is packed to the ceiling with fantastic tips, insights, tricks and strategies for putting AutoCAD in high gear. The book offers invaluable information in bite-sized morsels which can easily and gradually be implemented into any AutoCAD-based process to simplify and streamline it. Lynn also maintains an equally beneficial blog at [..] if you want a sampling of the kind of material conveniently compiled in this book. Highly recommended for anyone seeking "AutoCAD PowerUser" proficiency.
Great Book for seasoned AutoCAD users!.......2007-08-18
I have been using AutoCAD since 1992, after the first couple years of using AutoCAD, I stopped learning new tricks and learning better ways of using AutoCAD because I was able to do my job with the set of AutoCAD skills I have. This book helps me brush up my CAD skills and taught me many new tricks to be more efficient. It was never too late to teach an old dog new tricks!
Auto CAD made easier for the power user.......2007-02-23
This book is fantastic!! It really allows a power user more options and tips and tricks. Every tip ends up saving time and makes CAD more fun to use. Lynn keep up the great work.

old and crappy.......2006-07-03
This book is a bit outdated now.
The author of this book currently has a brand of his own paints and materials. He's so caught up on materials and your hands, that he doesnt teach to use your brain or eyes. He's one of those types that's obsessed with finding out the "secret" Maroger medium, the ratio of oil:pigment in old masters paintings, etc.
I dont know how anyone can think that using Raphaels' paints will make you paint like Raphael. It's like putting on Jerome Bettis' football pads and thinking you'll weigh 265 and run faster than a cheetah. It's not going to happen.
He's also big on slavishly copying photographs. I guess that's how a lot of illustrators think, though.
Compare this to books by the golden age illustrators; like Loomis, Rockwell, Leyendecker. . . even guys like Hogarth. They focus little on materials and "techniques," and teach more about learning to think and see.
In the end, you have to realize that Michelangelo could have painted the Sistine ceiling with a mop and a bucket of mud, and it would have been just as well done. Learn the basics of materials (which you can just find online), and find someone who will teach you to think.
Adequate for non-users of listed materials:.......2006-03-16
I was primarly interested in the book for teaching students the finer points of using Gouache in Illustration. Although, there was nothing particularly new in the text about the material, it was all new to my students who found the material helpful.
Good information.......2006-03-15
This is a good book with a lot of tips , but I belive that works good for beginners. Essential for beginners! But for advanced ilustrators a good book to fix some tips.
Very Good Book, excellente for artists.......2006-02-21
the knowledge and in-depth shared in this book is excellent, helps you to go further in the techs, and with tips and trick for the materials and equipment. The only "but" that i find is that it's not a step by step teaching for beginners. Excellente book!!!
True to it's title.......2004-01-21
So many self education books for artists claim to be definitive, comprehensive, or the only book you'll ever need. I don't know if this is the only book you'll need, but it is a cheaper alternative to paying tuition at an art college. And, unlike many how-to books (and some art colleges), Rob Howard gives very specific and detailed instructions. He's light on the motivational inspiration and heavy on technique. Afterall, a working illustrator (the book's target) doesn't need to get in touch with the inner artist, but rather needs tools to get the inner art out onto the client's desk.
Additionally, Rob Howard is quite talented. Often times people with Howard's gifts are so busy with paying customers that they don't have time to put together such a quality book. Every illustration is professional quality and an inspiration in itself!
The book is packed with photos and illustrations. He lists by name and sometimes manufacturer exactly what materials you need. Covers topics from Prismacolor pencils on Denril to Friskets and masking to pastels, acrylics and airbrushing....etc.
It's only weakness is that it's due for an update. First published in '92 before the internet explosion and before Adobe Photoshop and Synthetik Studio Artist became powerful enough computer based tools, this book focuses entirely on natural media. Just the same, an illustrator looking to set him or herself appart from the pack might want to set aside the software and use the proven techniques in this book!

Well worth the price.......2005-09-26
This beginners book on PhotoShop Elemements is clearly written with many useful examples. Unlike other books on this subject, the writer is a professional photographer concerned with preparing photographs for publication - and less about the casual amateur photographer.
I found the book useful and well worth the price.

Book Description
No more dense computer manuals and time-consuming code copying. With this invaluable new reference, Web designers at all experience levels can get up to speed immediately on the latest technologies-and use them to create compelling online sites.
New and better technologies have created increasingly demanding consumers. A Web site that doesn't incorporate the latest effects will have trouble keeping the user's attention-and the challenge to deliver lies squarely with today's Web designers. Now, Rockport Publishers helps answer this challenge with the Web Tricks and Techniques series. These user-friendly reference guides are designed to make even the most complicated and intimidating Web technology easy to understand.
Using a straightforward format that allows readers to look over the shoulder of top design experts, Layout offers tips and tricks for every element of Web page design. Step-by-step instructions walk the reader through a wide range of challenges from general layout issues (storyboarding and architecture essentials) to navigation (pop-down/up menus and collapsible navigation bars) to special effects with text, and an accompanying Web site includes actual HTML codes to download making each featured trick work.
Customer Reviews:
Worth a beginner's GLANCE - but not much of an investment.......2003-09-15
As always with a Rockport book, this item is attractively designed and produced in full color on thick glossy pages - but only 160 of them. Most of the pages are dedicated to displaying alternate views of web pages which have had their markup changed slightly, shown in different browsers, etc. There is *elementary* guidance on such concepts as Frames, Tables, alignment principles, font styles... pretty basic stuff, as you can see.
If you're a complete novice to web design (author suggests you have some HTML familiarity) you may find the book gives you *a few* new ideas about the potentials of design -- but you'll have a lot of further studying ahead of you. Worth spend thirty minutes browsing in a library or book store... but paying thirty greenbacks or so? "Eric Meyer on CSS" will give you a lot more thorough introduction to the process - and actually enable you to put together several different sites.
And - FWIW - strangely, as of September 2003 the author's web site had only one graphic and her email link - not quite what I'd expect for somewhat committed to web design. Hmmm...
the problem is >>.......2003-02-20
This is the book for begginers , it gives you
basic rules about creating webpages , it gives
you scripts that you can find in web without any help.
It has true words and nice photoes but nothing more, if
you're searching something about : how to do nice-looked
webpages , how to organize work by using grid, make good color
combinations , work with typography to find attractive
solutions, you will not find it here.
learning how to look.......2002-10-04
Finally! Someone who knows what makes a website work, and is willing to tell the rest of us. This book is very aptly titled: "Layout", as opposed to "Linux". It teaches me what to look for in a web site design that is effective in both marketing and aesthetic. It gives me all the options I need to design well with plenty of compelling examples. This is not an advanced programming book. In fact, it starts with very basic things. Like using legible fonts. Like pale colored backgrounds (instead of black backgrounds with red lettering). As a professional artist, I know how I want my images to come across on my website. If my site is poor then I lose business. I don't want to spend thousands for a site that looks poor, nor to learn a new career in order to market my current career. The structuring of the lessons, the online resources listed, the tips and commentary in Layout are all excellent.
A great resource........2002-09-24
This book offers a host of useful design suggestions that will help to avoid many of the most common mistakes. If you are a technical person like myself and you frequently wonder why some pages are so much more appealing than others you will find the answers in this great book.
Lots of helpful layout ideas.......2002-09-09
You'll find plenty of examples of good, clean layouts with tips on creating similar pages. The online tutorials are helpful and leave more room for full-color graphics of actual websites. Instructions are clear and easy to follow. Be sure to check out all the recommended sites for tons of examples. A good book for quick reference to well-though-out designs.

Book is in poor condition.......2005-09-07
I've received the book that took 3 weeks to arrive (when the seller told me 1) and it was it poor condition. At least I've got it. M
It's beautiful but sparse.......2004-03-19
This book is good if you haven't done much in flash. It has a beautiful layout and great (looking) examples, but doesn't do much in the way of in depth flash. Very little action script is applied to animations outside of the game example at the end. The best thing I got out of this book was a reference to www.miniml.com :)
Every heard of....????.......2004-03-05
Ever heard of image numbers (image 1a) or bulleted or numbered lists for step-by-step instructions (that seem to skip a few steps). I read a lot of books and this one is driving me insane because I want to learn what's in here. Great ideas. I've taken one tech writing class and feel this author should do the same.
Hard to follow- but good ideas.......2004-03-05
Once i understand the mistakes here I like what I learn. But it is getting a little bit aggravating. The ideas are good and very applicable to me so I will continue using the whole book to make sure and learn it. But the instructions can lack many details and sometimes seems to skip some steps that matter. I have wondered if the author stopped in the middle somewhere and started again without realizing exactly where we were.
I am using this with MX 2004 which can cause a conflict if you do not know how to go about using expert mode for the actions (which is all that is available with the newest version). That is easy to fix if you can write the simplist of actionscript from what I have seen so far. this came out just under a year ago and the descriptions and pictures I see are from the version before that one.
So this has great ideas but you are going to have to figure some things out for yourself while reading.
The Web site is up and running.......2003-10-29
Of course it's 5 stars, I wrote the book :-)
It took a while longer then normal for the publisher to get the book site up and running, but it's now there and all of the FLAs are available for download.

A Great Idea & Resource Book for Beginners!.......1998-06-29
Graphics and design play integral roles in the development of Websites. The manner in which graphic images are incorporated and how Websites are designed are important factors in effectively communicating on the Internet. Graphic Design Tricks & Techniques offers readers over 300 creative design, printing and production ideas that can be directly applied to the designing and promoting of Websites.
The book is organized into chapters related to graphic design areas such as layout, photography, printing, computer graphics, multimedia, and scanning. Novice Website designers will appreciate the ideas offered concerning the creative use of scanners and using computer graphic images. Designers will also develop an eye for design and layout, another important factor in the process of designing Websites.
Although this book has an appeal to a much broader range of readers, it is clearly applicable to Website designers as well. This book can also serve as a great collection of tips, tricks, and techniques to promote any number of products and services one has to offer. This book is particularly ideal for those readers operating on a tight budget.
Readers will notice that a number of people offered their own ideas which were incorporated into the book. Additionally, sources are cited for further reading and gathering of information, products, and services. The large 8 1/2" by 11" format makes for easy reading. This is an excellent idea and resource book for the beginner. It is worth the cost!
Only for the beginners........1998-03-29
What a disappointment! The"trick" to this is NOT buying the book. The information is extremely weak, layout is poor and the price is excessive, even though it is low. The layout is spread far too thin. With text size that would appeal to the visually challenged, its 144 pages that could have been assembled into half its size.
