Really nice book.......2007-07-31
I got this book for my life drawing class and I really like this book. It does not teach anatomy or proportion. It shows the classical way of doing figure drawing and how to do finish rendering. It's more traditional approach and really helpful. I have learned a lot from it.
Good for drawing "live".......2006-07-17
Very usefull, very pleasant to read. I was expecting more explanations about the relationship between anatomy and the human pose, but it's more about how to look at the model to draw it well.
Thank God for an excellent figurative painter!.......2006-03-04
Ryder's book is a delight to leaf through, looking at the excellent life drawings in red earth, done with the same accuracy and passion as the masters of the past.
He gives a very clear account of how to tackle the drawing in phases, until it is finished.
I would have rated the book a solid 5, were it not that in my opinion Ryder spends too little time giving advice on how to measure proportions, which are the basis of a successful life drawing or portrait. He is undoubtedly a masterful draftsman, but the less experienced artist reading his book would expect to be led step by step on such an important aspect of drawing from life.
Excellent, but..........2005-11-05
The general consensus of the reviews I've read is that this is a fine book, but not for beginners. My take is somewhat different.
First of all, I think this is a fine book for a beginner if she or he is not (unlike most beginners it seems) indignant at the idea of having to have exercise patience and concentration.
Anthony Ryder is a fine draftsman and, to judge from this book, a fine teacher as well. He explains his method quite admirably. How others can think otherwise is a mystery to me. As far as I'm concerned, he does an excellent job of combining instruction in mechanical technique with broader insights into the process of drawing. While I have never met him, I find he comes across in this book as quite a likeable person.
I do, however, have a reservation. The author seems to have little understanding of, or at least does not convey, the limitations of the method he teaches.
For accurately conveying the appearance of still subjects in controlled lighting, I think this method is without better.
Many subjects, however, cannot be portrayed accurately using this method. You simply cannot make a good drawing of a living deer or chickadee, for instance, using this framework. Nor can you portray human subjects that are impractical for studio sessions, for instance a battle scene with many people (try paying just one model for 8 hours of posing) and in positions that no model can hold for very long or at all. All the work of A.R. that I have seen is either of inanimate objects or of human models in relatively leisurely poses, and his method reflects that.
Nonetheless, learning to draw accurately from still life is an essential skill for those who want to do realistic work, and this book is an excellent foundation. However, if you want to work with subjects other than lounging models and objects on table tops, you will need to go beyond it.
Figure Drawing.......2005-08-12
Mr. Ryder has compiled wonderful book for the figure drawing beginer that includes many types of drawings and drawing media, from pencil to charcoal to pastels. It is extremely well ilustrated with many great tips for the beginers. This is a book that I highly recomend for those just starting to those are already on their way.

Cheap and Easy.......2007-08-23
This book came in a good condition within a decent amount of time. It was way cheaper than other stores/sites. Cheap and easy is what I like, so this book was a great buy for me. Kudos to the seller: I'd shop again with them anytime!
Mixed-media delight.......2007-06-27
This is a great book and a wonderful journey into the world of mixed media. I loved the section on how to alter real photos!
Beautiful images.......2007-05-27
This book has many wonderful pictures and lists the items need to use for the effects but the instructions are not specific enough for a beginner to dive right in if they are not familiar with certain products. I find myself looking through for techniques that I have not used and really wish that several of the projects were a bit more specific. Overall I really love the book but could see that it could be overwelming for someone who is shy from trying new things.
wonderful.......2007-03-25
in my job as graphic designer I often get stuck in a certain way or ideas of a design and this book just popped me into a totally new way of thinking and giving me a ton of fresh ideas
Great Image Transfer Reference.......2007-02-03
I checked this book out from the library twice, and liked it so much I decided to buy it. My favorite feature: the book explains many methods to use for image transfers from copier, inkjet, and other image sources. It also has tons of full-color examples. I don't particularly care for the author's style of art, but the varied ideas, as well as the gallery of other artists' work, make up for it.
Book Description
Still the best, broadest, and most complete introduction to the colorful, lustrously glazed, exuberantly decorated 19th-century ceramic art called majolica, this classic book, first published in 1989, is now fully updated. A brand-new chapter includes the latest information and 27 added color photographs of recently discovered pieces; 18 fresh color illustrations replace older black and whites; and an updated bibliography and list of museums with majolica collections make this book invaluable for the ever-growing number of majolica enthusiasts. The result, as Cape Cod Antiques & Arts said of the original edition, is "a serious reference for serious connoisseurs . . . It's wonderful."

Great resource for collectors and modern majolica-artists........1999-10-15
First saw this magnificent volume at a collector's home, and had to acquire a copy for my library as inspiration for my own artistic endeavors with majolica.
One of the definitive books on Victorian Majolica.......1999-09-01
People all over the world treat this as the "Bible" of Victorian Majolica. It is the best.

Very Helpful.......2007-08-23
Fine Art Publicity has some very good ideas about marketing and publicity. We just opened an art gallery, and have already had a few articles published in local newspapers thanks to the suggestions in this book.
Book will be a great help.......2005-09-16
I am writing a business plan to open an art gallery.
Even though I already know how to market service businesses,
I need to learn a lot about marketing an art gallery. I
found a trove of very good advice in this book. I appreciate
the easy layout and readability also. I expect anyone
with an art business can find ideas here.
A 'must' for aspiring artists and gallery owners alike.......2005-06-10
The majority of art career guides come from either career counselors or artists themselves, so it's refreshing to note that Fine Art Publicity: The Complete Guide For Galleries And Artists, appearing in its second updated edition, is written by an industry publicist backed by the knowledge of her profession. Galleries and artists receive the basics of marketing to the art community; from researching a media list for both local and national contacts to locating businesses connected to the arts, and gathering a library of samples for targeted publicity contacts. Simply an outstanding reference; a 'must' for aspiring artists and gallery owners alike.
This book is great.......2003-09-06
I dont usually write reviews, but I completely disagree with the bad review on here. This is an incredibly useful book for art galleries. I can't express how helpful this book has been to me. This is a guide for galleries not artists, so maybe that's why the last reader had issues.
Search Elsewhere.......2002-12-12
I buy alot of books but I have never before seen a book written for an adult audience spread so thinly over so many pages. I suppose this was done to try to create the illusion of there being more information here than there really is. What little useful information this book contians seems to be repeated over and over. I would guess again to fill pages. I feel there is virtually no practical information here for an artist and very little for a gallery. I usually don't have an interest in writing book reviews but I was so disappointed in this book that I wanted to alert others to search elsewhere for useful information.

Customer Reviews:
Much better than "Art Class" - a MUST for artists w/poor memory.......2007-09-15
For those of us who actually want to learn something new, something you probably didn't learn in undergrad. Excellent refrence book for specific pigments and the results when mixed with others. For example, I forgot that when mixing Cadmium Red w/a blue results in a "brownish" viloet hue. Instead using Alizeran Crimson creates a much more desireble violet.
Not only does this book dispell myths, include historical birthings of pigments, give acurate detailed information about each color (including variations w/in each family)...it also has a chapter on "Creative Directions". This is a really great chapter giving inspiration for branching out w/your work.
I'm an art teacher, and artist myself. I don't have to the time I'd like to keep my own journals of pigments and mixed colors...it just isn't practical for me...too much to do, too little time. This book is amazing, perfect for the 3 second memory I have and much better than leafing through an ENORMOUS reference book just to remember which red to use when making violet (was it Alizeran Crimson or Cadmium Red)...
However, if you're just starting out in painting or you're looking for a sequence for a "curriculum" get the "New Artist's Manual...". It is basically this book and "Art Class" combined. Wish I had bought that one first.
AMAZING.......2004-05-22
Excellent! Well organized with great side comments, this book is really a journal for color. From its significance, invention and evolution into what we know today, this book is full of color information that is fun to learn. Jennings gives you a true education in color appreciation complete with nuance, historical facts and lots of pictures. Easy to reference, it is a great addition to any library. I have been looking for a book like this for a long time. Much thanks to the author.
INSPIRATION!.......2004-03-28
WOW - what a great guide to color! Info about how paint is made, mixing, history, how artists work - it's just great. Whatever kind of art you do, including jewelry, fabric, needlework, you'll be heavily inspried by the visual and printed information here.
INSPIRATION!.......2004-03-28
Wow - what a great guide to color! Plus insights into how artists with various styles work and some historical artists, too. Extremely well organized for quick reference. Whatever kind of art you do, including jewelry, fabric and needlework, you'll find tons of inspiration in this book.

Customer Reviews:
Better than his other books..........2007-09-16
This book is excellent if you want to learn everything about painitng. It does not really cover drawing technique, be forewarned. This is his best book, do not buy "art class" or the "artist's color manual" if you chose to buy this book. Basically, he's complied both books into one.
This book really does cover all materials:
-paper and it's practical uses in concerns to specific mediums
-brushes and their practical uses in concerns to mediums
-Mediums: oil, gouche, egg tempra, watercolor, acrylic, chroma, pastels, charcol, conte crayon, ink (both traditional and modern), etc...
-Mixing media [not to be confused w/color mediums]: linseed oil, turpentine, acrylic mediums (matte, gel, etc.), watercolor mediums, etc...
It does have the same sections in "Art Class" like "where do I start?" etc. It takes you through starting from still life up to portraiture and beyond in this book. It has an additional area of subject matter which is about imagined subject matter.
Overall, it's an excellent reference book, contains good advice on how to go about starting a new medium, and allows for creativity in using mediums by explaining how they work, advantages & disadvantages, starter pallet colors, and permanance.
I would have given it 5 stars if it hadn't claimed to be a drawing technique book...you need a foundation in drawing before attempting this book.
Aptly named Complete ...........2007-04-11
This book covers just about everything, but is more informative on mediums other than oil painting. But it does give helpful tips that I had used previously, without realizing it was a standard technique used by fellow artists, but now I see why I've used them! For somebody that wants to do everything from the ground up, including making their own oil paint, then this is the book to own! Provides more instructional guidance than most other books I've seen/bought. Better artist's examples and more professional results with more advanced instructions than most other publications.
A guide to the many new art materials on the market.......2006-04-27
If you're an artist seeking the basics of how to set up a studio and use professional methods in a range of media, THE NEW ARTIST'S MANUAL: THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO PAINTING AND DRAWING MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES is for you. There are so many new materials on the market today that there's an ever-present need for a comprehensive coverage of them: THE NEW ARTIST'S MANUAL provides such depth in surveying paper and paint choices, pros and cons of controlling output under different conditions, experimenting with materials and textures, and much more. An outstanding guide aspiring artists will want to look it - and it's packed with color examples on every page.
Great Book, Lousy Binding.......2006-01-13
This is truly a useful and helpful book in explaining not just techniques, but materials: their pros, cons, and inherent challenges in use. But the binding should be much better. Chronicle Books has a history of putting out decent books with cheap and/or non-durable binding, which does not hold up well with repeated use. The spine cracks easily and then you have to be careful from then on to make certain that sections don't become loose. This is not good for a book designed for repeated reference and study. I would have given the book five stars, but for this serious flaw that Chronicle Books has.

Big dreams require big sacrifices and this book tells all about the compromises someone has to make to make it in the industry. To Sell Music, Book Shows And Get Noticed!" , guide and handbook for the emerging artist.

The book layout works for easy referencing. I wouldn't be without it.

BEAUTIFUL & INFORMATIVE BOOK.......2007-07-04
Gorgeous photographs. Most pieces of glass you would only see in a museum. I wish there were more.
Murano Magic.......2004-06-14
Having recently returned from Venice, I wish I had this book before I left. Mr. Gable's meticulously researched volume offers so much valuable information, any glass collector or any tourist interested in a deeper perspective of the glass art of the city should read this book. The author's grasp of the nuances of the various styles is masterful and gave me a whole new appreciation of the experience I had in Venice.
Glass collector? Want to be one? You MUST buy this book!.......2004-06-11
"Murano Magic" is a terrific volume to own if you love collecting Venetian glass as much as I do. Or if you want to learn the ropes. This exhaustively researched (and yet surprisingly easy to read!) book tells you everything about the big glassmaking families and their works. (I especially liked the historical perspective the author gave to discussing the different glassmaking houses.) And the photos are outstanding. Many glass books I've seen just don't have enough photos to show examples of all the different kinds of Venetian glass (there are literally thousands of styles). "Murano Magic" has wonderful photos and lots of them. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in Venetian glass.
Made me see Venice with new eyes.......2004-06-11
It is almost a crime that Amazon is listing this book with "No Photo Available," because it's a real eye-catcher of a volume, with stunning photographs on every page. But don't be fooled by its beauty; this is no mere coffee-table book. Rather, it's an encyclopedic guide, exhaustively researched and engagingly written. I have been fortunate enough to visit Venice several times, but Murano Magic made me see the city and its art with new eyes and a deeper appreciation. I would recommend the book to anyone, but especially to those who are planning a trip to Northern Italy.

Customer Reviews:
Not really an Art Class -- At best: Good for a High School Art Teacher reference book.......2007-09-15
Okay book. If you're a beginner you may like it, but it lacks so much that is essential for the beginner. Being an art teacher, the flow of the book really makes sense. It works you from still life all the way up to portraiture. You do however need to know how to draw prior to purchasing this book and start painting. It does not provide you w/excersises for learning the elements of art (for example: form and how to create it through value, line, space, and being able to give the object spatial sense). Otherwise, it is a good beginner reference book in the sense that it'll give you direction if you're trepadatious.
In the back there is a sort of art equipment index explaining types of materials and suggested ways to use them. There is also a small glossary of terms.
At best though, it's a good reference manual for teachers and I'll tell you why. It has breif explinations on materials, just enough to jog your memory (if you haven't used the material in a while). Has a good chronology for a curriculum if you are teaching a full year or 2 consecutive years of a painting and drawing course.
There is no history included, but it does show different approches for the same purpose. Example, people approach going to canvas in different ways: 1. carefully sketching in water soluble pencil, 2. sketching in charcoal, 3. Using a very light wash, 4. no pre-sketching at all. In other words, it gives you multiple methods to achieve the same end--how you work depends on which you'll chose.
Not a bad buy, not a great one either.
You're better off buying "The New Artist's Manual: The Complete Guide to Painting and Drawing Materials and Techniques" by this author. It is this book and "the artist's color manual: ..." rolled into one.
One of the most profuse and well illustrated books on Painting.......2007-04-11
Art Class: A Complete Guide to Painting
by Simon Jennings
This book is one of those for which you could give more than 5 stars. It is one of the most profusely illustrated books on the subject of painting, and these are color illustrations. Nearly every single page has nearly half a dozen or more of the most vibrant, colorful, and well appointed illustrations that I have ever seen.
So what's the downside of the book? There is no downside. This is 192 pages of the most wonderful instruction on the use of painting that I have ever seen. I discovered this while visiting the art galleries and shops in Taos, New Mexico.
The book shows Simon Jennings to be the "general editor" and Sally Bulgin to be the "Consultant Editor" and several other names are included in advisory roles. I don't understand the identifications concerning "authorship" but certainly this is a book to stand out above and beyond the ordinary instruction on painting and the uses of color.
In my reviews of drawing books, I've always warned people of the use of buzz words and gimmick phrases such as "complete-guide-to" as a marketing gimmick. That's because almost no books live up to the promise. "Art Class: A Complete Guide To Painting" is most certainly an exception to this.
"Art Class" is one of those texts that stands so far above the other books on painting that it eclipses the entire field. It is one of those books that is so visually stunning that it is well worth the trip to a book shope to flip through its pages.
I liked the opening paragraphs on page 14, Chapter One, titled "Where Do I Start" where "Art Class" says:
"This book covers many levels of ability, but this page is amed at the absolute beginner rather than the painter whose interests have been focused and techniques honed through years of dedication and experience."
Absolute Beginners! That's who gets the most benefit of this book. It shows all the materials you need to work in water color, oil, acrylic and what you need to work either indoors or out; but the text is so encyclopedic that you are not surprised to learn that the authors also were advised by technical experts from WINDSOR & NEWTON, which is the company that makes fine art paints. This is the most visually compelling art book I have ever seen.
It's all about what you need to know to start working in color. More surprising still is the author's division of the book into three sections, instead of the typical ten to twelve chapters. Even the glossary is done in a unique manner. The page backgrounds are yellow, rather than white, and the outer edge of the glossary pages are trimmed in a beautiful red. This book is entirely designed by people who understand visual beauty and how to bring to life all things visually presented.
"Art Class" lists the basics as these classifications:
Color, Paints, Diluents, Mediums, Primers & Grounds, Varnish and size, Brushes, Knives and accessories, Palettes, Canvas, Boarrds and panels, Papers, Painting techniques, Pastels, Drawing Equipment. This book is so unlike everything else I have ever seen that it is one of my genuine treasures on the book shelf. If you get a copy, expect it to become "dog-eared" from constant use.
I haven't been so utterly overwhelmed by an art book since I discovered Jack Hamm!
Back to Art.......2007-02-23
This a great book to get someone started painting or as a refresher course for those already painting. Good ideas for getting over the mental blocks artists sometimes encounter.
painting for all levels.......2003-10-25
This is a very complete reference for what seems like all you need to know (and then some) about painting. I am not an experienced painter so I was almost a little intimidated at first with all the information presented here. The issue with me though was not the book (which is well organized) but putting the brush to the canvas...
It's definitely worth the price, often I'll resell a book that I just wasn't "in to" but this is a great reference that covers so much I know I'll have it for a long time to come (I've only owned it for 3 weeks at this point...)
fabulous compendium for beginning and intermediate artists.......2002-02-24
This is a remarkable resource -- comprehensive, well-organized and understandable.
I am not blessed with artistic talent, though I love art and have always wanted to try painting for pleasure. This book is perfect. It is divided into three sections: Where Do I Start, What Should I Paint, and What are the Basics. It begins at the beginning, discussing the choice of medium and theme; the selection, acquisition and care of supplies; and the choice of subject. It then moves on to technique: how to render a three-dimensional object on paper; how to compose a study; how to paint color, pattern and texture; painting space, depth and distance. These instructions are augmented by lots of pictures. You will see the step-by-step way to paint a tree, a face, a still life, a landscape etc. The final section really covers the basics -- mixing colors, types of paints, brushes, accessories, palette layouts, preparing canvases, paper, correcting mistakes, pencils, inks .... Every page is interesting. I learned so much. A glossary and index complete this wonderful resource.
The writing is clear and the many photos and illustrations are fabulous. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you are interested in teaching art or learning to paint, you cannot go wrong.
Book Description
In this innovative guide, master art instructor William Maughan demonstrates how to create a realistic human likeness by using the classic and highly accurate modeling technique of chiaroscuro (Italian for "light and dark") developed by Leonardo da Vinci during the High Renaissance. Maughan first introduces readers to the basics of this centuries-old technique, showing how to analyze form, light, and shadow; use dark pencil, white pencil, and toned paper to create a full range of values; use the elements of design to enhance a likeness; and capture a sitter's gestures and proportions. He then demonstrates, step by step, how to draw each facial feature, develop visual awareness, and render the head in color with soft pastels.

Very good book........2007-09-17
Its really a good book.
What i liked about it . is how its simple yet advanced.
Really diversed , which can serve well the beginners and the skilled artists.
Excellent drawing book.......2007-07-16
A teacher of 30 years experience, William Maughan encourages the reader to move beyond linear drawing of the head to a value (chiarscuro) oriented approach. The book is well written and illustrated with the authors beautful drawings. I've been drawing regularly for over 10 years now as a discipline for my painting and I have adopted this book as my text for advancement. Well worth purchasing.
Maughan's book is great........2007-05-07
There is a reason why this book is requested in the finest Ateliers in the world: it's the real knowledge of what you are seeking as an artist.
drawing the head.......2007-04-11
I did not find this book very helpful to me. I did not like the pictures .They did not provide good examples to follow.
Not a Complete Guide.......2006-12-12
This book is not for beginners or even those who are not beginners, but who have no experience with pastel. There are so-called "step by step" instructions but it is difficult to understand how the instructor gets from the first drawing to the final one.
There is little variation between the poses or the expressions on the models faces. If you want to draw something besides a three quarter pose with an unsmiling face you won't find it here. On the other hand if you are interested in drawing monsters, there is a whole chapter on that.
A lot of space is given to discussing chiaroscuro with much repetition.
If you are looking for a "complete" guide to drawing the head, this is not the book.
