Pierre et Gilles forever.......2004-12-18

This book is an excellent presentation of Pierre et Gilles work, esp as a first purchase of their masterworks. It has a great introduction that explains their collaboration which will be of much interest, exp to modern graphic artists who want to do similr work. The prints are gorgeous, and there is a nice variety of work, without including their more "hardcore" pieces to scare off people from appreciatin their work.

The genius of Camp.......2002-01-27

Pierre et Gilles are exquisite interpreters of campy glamour.Their sexy saints,their innocently looking yet sizzyingly sexy boys and girls, are like a sumptous glittering candy. I've savoured their work.

Wonderful Introduction.................2000-12-07

This beautiful produced book , accompanying a major exhibition at the new Museum of Contemporary Art, in New York, is a wonderful introduction for anyone to Pierre & Gilles beautiful & unique combination of photography and painting. I have been a fan of Pierre & Gilles for many years, and have enjoyed all of the wonderful collection of books published about them over the years, but this book was indeed welcomed because it has a lot of their new unpublished photographic paintings. Art critic & curator, Dan Cameron, gives a great overview & history of Pierre & Gille's photographic paintings as well as a complete explanation of all of the images presented in this book. It's very insightful and I learned a lot more than I knew before.

So if you are a true fan of Pierre & Gilles work you definitely should have this beautiful book in your collection, or if their work is new to you this is one of the best introductions to their talented and very unique photography.

An Increidible Look into the eyes of Pierre Et Gilles.......2000-12-04

These two artist are some of the most avantgard and ambicouis photographers of our time. With their representations of saints and their homoerotic pieces they have something for jsut about anybody. I recommmend this book to anyone who is looking to add a very different type of art to their home library!

The art of Pierre et Gilles shows beauty, sensual, intimate, contemporary and quality works made by two individuals that becomes an author in a perfect union. They create fantastic worlds with photography and paint. Their works talks about their dreams, lifes, obsessions, pleasures, pains, loves, friends, interests. They shows a unncommon vision of the contemporary world through topics related to religion, sexuality, mithology, personalities, and their own lifes. Even like an object, this is one of the most beautiful art books ever made, every single detail have been realized carefully.

Pierre et Gilles set a new standard when it comes to their combination of photograpy and painting. No wonder photographers like David La Chappelle try to knock off their style (imitation is the highest form of flattery). I found this massive coffee table book to be thorough, entertaining, titillating, and funny. I would recommend it to anyone interesting in modern "pop" art and portrait photography. The imagination of these two is priceless as is this collection of their work.

Male pictures at a good price.......2005-08-16

I bought this book wondering about the quality and quantity of male picture included, but I am totally satisfied. The book displays a comprehensive sample of male pictures from late XIX century up to today. I think it will be useful for fine art students and other people who need a good visual source for the male nude.

Another Fine Leddick Volume.......2004-03-24

Nobody does a better job of collecting and publishing nude photographs of men than David Leddick. He adds here another fine volume to his several books on the subject. Leddick begins with photographers in the Nineteenth Century and continues to the present in chronological order. All the photographers you expect are here as well as some of the photographs we have seen many times before. (I'm thinking now of Mapplethorpe's infamous "Man in Polyester Suit.") In addition to Mapplethorpe, there's Thomas Eakins, Wilhelm von Gloeden, Cecil Beaton, George Platt Lynes-- for my money nobody surpasses him-- Bob Mizer, Horst and Herb Ritts. But Leddick also includes David Hockney, Duane Michaels, the incomparable Imogene Cunningham and one of my favorite photographs by one of my favorite photographers, a shot of Helmut Berger by Helmut Newton. I was also glad to see Leddick include the work of Nan Goldin and Pierre et Gilles, two unique photographers whom I admire tremendously. There's a good chance you'll find your favorite photographer included here and become acquainted as well with artists you didn't previously know.

This little volume is beautifully printed and extremely well-priced.

Did nothing for this straight woman.......2003-01-23

I must agree with the reviewer who stated that this book had a gay tilt to it. That's perfectly fine if that's your cup of tea, and I'm glad that gay men have books such as these to choose from. I prefer something with just photos of nude men by themselves. I guess I'll continue my search for such a book. I'm disappointed that there is so little out there for heterosexual women like me.

Not what I expected.......2002-12-28

How could it not be, right? It's called 'Male Nude'. Well there are many nude men within its pages, but nothing I found spectacular or new in approach. It seemed this book was done with a gay tilt to it as well, which is fine if that's what one is looking for. Several of the images are of men together, hugging, admiring, etc. I hoped for more nudes on their own, instead of images provoking what happened before or what will happen after the photo was taken. Regardless, there are some nice physiques here, and the book is laid out in chronological order from the 1900s up to present day. The past pictures were intersting to see, but this isn't something I keep precious in my collection.

Good General History of an Artform.......2002-06-04

There isn't much else I can say that I didn't cover in the title of my review. This is a good collection of photographs divided into time periods, each of which is given a brief essay introduction by Leddick. Leddick, while not a brilliant art historian, is the best I've found on this controversial and often overlooked artform.

I originally purchased this book for artistic purposes. I've been studying human anatomy and wanted some nude pictures of males to aid me in my practice. This book helped my art immensely and I'm learning as well as enjoying the buff toned shape of a young man.

There are some hot pics in this wonderful book, as well as goooood shots below the belt. Having only ever been with one guy, this book helped me understand the male anatomy alot . . . and it's great for getting off.

Not much erotica.......2006-10-25

The books contains about 196 pictures. Of those, about 35 contain full frontal nudity.

A few of the models look good but the title of the book is really misleading. If you want to look at an Adonis in a book then you must buy a book, but not this one!

Filtered Masterpieces.......2005-08-07

For information, the back cover text is illegible as a scan of fine lettering on black and reads, "ADONIS is a stunning collection of nearly 200 of the best erotic photographs of the male form, in both black and white and color, featuring the work of some of the world's seminal fashion, portrait and erotic photographers. Photographers whose work appears as part of this important collection include Horst P. Horst, Nan Goldin, Greg Gorman, Doris Kloster, Rob Lang, Mark Morrisroe, Richard Phibbs, Pierre et Gilles, Herb Ritts, Wolfgang Tillmans, Andy Warhol, Trevor Watson." Among the name-dropping, I liked only certain selections by et Gilles and Phibbs. Among 223 pages, 49 photographers are covered at a few pages each. The content begins on page 20, so there are 204 plates; however, only about 25 feature frontal nudity. I purposely do not say FULL frontal nudity because, of the 25, about 15, or 3/5, are what I would call torso shots (faceless or face not discernible). Overall, too many behinds are featured and too few fronts, as the author seems to have mainly selected works in which the subjects are twisted every which way to hide or obscure their private parts. Having seen other and, in my opinion, better works by some of the photographers, I must conclude that the author prefers back rather than front views and prefers mystery in frontals. For example, the few by Baron Wilhelm von Gloeden are more like the worst rather than "stunning" or "important." Too bad, as von Gloeden, I think, came closest to the Adonis ideal, using classical Greek or Greco-Roman settings (Taormina: Wilhelm Von Gloeden, for example) and romanesque, Italian models. Letting the buyer beware, this fits a general trend that some women (I presume that the author is female) may be overly concerned with buns. Although I just received the book, I am going to sell my copy.

Masterpieces? Erotic? I think not.......2005-05-31

This book was highly anticipated as I was looking forward to viewing artful photography featuring unclothed men. What I realized once I got to the end was that I felt extremely cheated, disappointed, what have you. The poses were nothing special, the men were primarily young to very young looking, fit and/or athletic. How does this qualify for masterpiece status? And as for the "erotic" promise of the title, I just didn't see it. Pretty boys, attractive men, a couple crossdressers, none of whom were remarkable or even memorable. There was no exhibition of energy, no emotion, no anything. I swear if I had a fancy camera I could do better! I'll admit that there were a few that captured my eye, but for a volume containing about 200 images, this book falls way short of its Greek namesake.

The Beauty of Male.......2000-07-30

I was also breathless as I looked through the pages of men. They were incredibly beautiful.

My favorite picture is of the two men in bed together, naked. There is a tenderness to their picture that is absolutely beautiful.

This book is a wonderful celebration of the male form.
