best in its field (of one).......2007-10-01
This is the best book I've seen (and I've looked through EVERYTHING at Barnes and Noble and Borders stores) on making all kinds of three-dimensional paper creations. In fact, it's pretty much one of a kind. True, as another reviewer says, it doesn't have patterns for the illustrated projects, but it does have good instructions. I would think that most people would want to come up with their own works by using the illustrated techniques, and being inspired by the author's finished projects. After all, the idea is to be creative, isn't it?
Where are the patterns?.......2007-06-27
The illustrations were beautiful, and I was disappointed to learn that patterns were not included.
Good artistic selections.......2007-04-03
Diane Maure-Mathison does a good job of putting together a nice selection of creative ideas with paper. She focuses on creativity and simple ideas that can be easily expanded. Her work on pop-ups which I was looking for covers the basics but does not go into the details of more complex design.

More advanced pop-up card ideas-still easy to do.......1996-06-07
This is the second book on the same subject. This one teaches you
more ideas for pop-up cards. Also shows you how you can make
GIANT pop-ups that can be used for playing in and around-sort
of a scene for kids to build around. Again written for children
but a good book for beginners in making pop-ups.
Book Description
Elegant and accessible, this interactive handbook teaches crafters of all ages how to create kinetic paper art. The projects are complete with examples, formulas, and the essential instruction that allows them to be constructed directly from the book with simple materials on hand: paper, scissors, and glue. Pop-ups are grouped by type—box or triangle—and as the chapters progress, the techniques are combined and layered for more dramatic effects. With its thorough explanations and inspiring ideas, this book will bring color and motion to crafters’ cards, scrapbooks, and invitations.

Serious book art in a friendly package.......2007-07-15
Below is an edited version of the note I sent to the author, Carol Barton, after receiving my (first) copy of Pocket Paper Engineer:
Dear Carol,
Yesterday I received my copy of PPE and wanted to let you know how delighted I am with the book. Wow! I had ordered it as a gift but when I saw it, I immediately ordered two more -- one for myself and another as a gift for my daughter (she's a magazine publisher).
I've been making pop-ups for 25 years and have copies of most pop-up how-to books that I know of, including some long out of print. I've taught pop-up book making and even made an "award-winning" pop-up (audience favorite). We've been in touch before back in the 1990s. You sent me some slides of your work. Your book is unique in that it is itself an artist's book. Colour, dimensions, texture, images, layout -- they're all perfect. It's all I can do to restrain myself from taking out the exacto knife on the copy I've got rather than waiting for my own copy to arrive in the mail.
My immediate question is: when is volume two coming out? Will you be doing pull-tab mechanisms, too?
Best regards,
Let Me Get in The Queue.......2007-07-11
What a wonderful "how to" book! Most other instructional books on this topic make me feel I needed to go get an engineering degree first in order to understand the instructions.
I'll just second all the praise heaped on this book by the reviewers before me.
Pop-Up Cards.......2007-02-12
This is a great book for the beginner or those who already make cards. It has easy step by step directions as well as new card ideas and different types of paper to use in your projects.
Keep it handy as a reference guide.
Making your own pop-ups can be simple and fun!.......2006-09-13

Author Carol Barton has taken her twenty years of experience in the art of paper engineering, design, and bookbinding to compile an excellent instruction book on how to construct pop-ups. Concepts are presented in simple form with do-it-yourself models to make and refer back to. Handy pockets are included for storage of the finished projects.
I, for one, have always been fascinated with pop-ups, usually found in children's books. Opening a flat page of a book to reveal a three-dimensional form is the premise behind this workbook and is a part of what a paper engineer creates. I was thrilled to see just how easily the included cards can be assembled. I intend to take what I have learned and put it to use in my scrapbooking projects as well as on some greeting card ideas.
A pop-up is defined by its automatic movement, pulling out and away from the pages of a book or card as it is opened. Pop-ups come alive when a page is opened, and different pop-ups work better with pages opened at a right angle or slightly more. Pop-ups might be confused with the Eastern art of folding paper forms called origami, but the difference lies in the factor of movement created by pop-ups.
"The Pop-Up Paper Engineer" is a spiral bound workbook with sixteen do-it-yourself cards, allowing one to get experience in the particular pop-up form presented. The two most basic forms are the box and the triangle, and clear step-by-step instructions are included and thoroughly explained. Combinations of the basic box and triangle forms can be combined to create more complex designs while layered pop-ups will give even more versatility. This is a great resource if you want to learn what's behind the fascination of creating pop-ups. The spiral binding makes for easy opening and page turning, plus the projects can be easily removed. Basic supplies needed to construct pop-ups are covered along with the history of paper engineering and how it's been used.
I highly recommend this workbook if you are into paper crafting or scrapbooking. You will see just how easy it is to spark up your projects by including pop-ups on your pages! Your imagination will get a workout!
Book Description
In this gorgeously illustrated, engagingly written and comprehensive look at paper and its extraordinary versatility as a creative medium, pre-eminent origami artist and paper engineer Paul Jackson offers both practical instruction and inspiration for anyone interested in papercraft. In the first section, TECHNIQUES, Jackson offers a step-by-step guide to the fundamental techniques of the major paper arts; the second section, THEMES, presents a gallery of outstanding paperworks. He discusses paper itself and papermaking, and showcases some of the most innovative work being done today by an international array of leading paper engineers and craftspeople. At the end of the book, readers will find a listing of useful addresses of papercraft organizations that publish newsletters, hold meetings or conventions and, in some cases, sell supplies. As Jackson writes in the Foreword to Artistry in Paper, "If you wish to create your own paperworks but are unsure how to begin, start with the exercises and projects relating to a particular technique, then experiment playfully to develop a personal style, perhaps with an abstract or representational theme in mind to guide you. If you are searching for a theme, refer to the paperworks in the THEMES for ideas. I hope this book will inspitre you to create with paper, and that you will come to know the many pleasures of working with this extraordinary material."

another retread disguised as a new work.......2007-02-26
Publishers who deal with origami books are becoming more and more notorious for repacking and renaming old books and presenting them as "new." Paul Jackson is a wonderful paper artist and teacher, and as I understand it, he has no control over what publishers do with this title since he sold the rights to it over 15 years ago, but this book has been around since ca. 1991. Now a publisher wants to sell it with a new title and new cover. You have to be Sherlock Holmes anymore to find out if a "new" origami book is original material or a retread. Please do your research before you buy and try to determine if you already own the book in another format. I want to emphasize that Paul Jackson disavows any collusion in this matter and says he doesn't make any money off these reproductions of his old works. My rating of the book is not based on its merits but on the ethical dealings of the publisher.
Even beginners aren't left behind........2006-09-24

The step-by-step color photos throughout assure even beginners aren't left behind.

Wrong book recieved.......2006-10-05
I see that the problem is not corrected as I too recieved the Dylan Thomas Bio.
Reason for the Mix-Ups.......2006-03-20
Just wanted to attempt to explain the mixups mentioned below, since we have received an order for this book by mistake. For some reason that is entirely unclear, Pop-O-Mania (published in 1997) seems to share the exact ISBN as Paul Ferris' 1977 biography of Dylan Thomas. Amazon's system has equated these two books and created a hybridized record for them (hence the 1977 publishing date and incorrect page count for Pop-O-Mania noted in the item details). We will be in touch with Amazon about the problem.
Pop-O-Mania.......2005-07-08
What a rip off. I too was sent a book about Dylan Thomas and never have gotted the book I ordered. It seems that Amazon doesn't care because I have repetely tried to contact someone there and have met only dead ends. Doesn't Amazon have a customer service that handles such matters. I don't even know how to return the Dylan Thomas book that I didn't want in the first place. I wonder if I had ordered that book I would have gotten the one I wanted instead?
Who is Dylan Thomas?.......2005-06-16
And why did I receive his biography instead of the Pop-o-mania book I ordered?
WRONG BOOK ARRIVES!!!!!!.......2005-01-11
Dan's right, I received the Dylan Thomas book, too. The real thing is now conveniently priced at double the stated price of $5.25! SOMEONE FIX THE PROBLEM!

Some of these do not work very well. Unless you know what you're doing or have a more detailed book on pop-ups these pop-ups may not work.

Very informative........2006-01-25
This is an excellent book for beginners. Each design has a pattern with guidelines and very good, easy to follow instructions. I also purchased another book by M. Chatani, Paper Magic, Pop-up, Paper Craft, and I highly recommend it too.
Good beginner book.......1999-03-04
As far as pop up card books go, this is a great starter book! It was the first one I bought, and it got me hooked. Good thing too because I have since purchased six other books, and realize that those have more difficult designs such that I might have given up on the hobby.

Robert Sabuda is to pop-up art what the International Grandmaster is to chess, and it isn't for nothing that he's described on the back of this book as a "paper engineer." As the title suggests, this whimsical, old-fashioned, elegant book embodies the Traditional Song of Abundant Giving--each verse of "The 12 Days of Christmas" is illustrated with a different pop-up creation. Some are relatively simple, such as the partridge (made of just two pieces of hinged paper) that opens its wings above some pears. Still, there is something unexpectedly bold about how the bird literally flies out over the top margin of the page. Other pop-ups are more characteristically bravura creations: the "Ten pipers piping" are crafted explicitly as decorative paper cut-outs, but the scissors that cut them are part of the pop-up, too. Perhaps the most complex of the set is "Eleven Ladies Dancing." Interpreted as an old-fashioned music box, the 11 ladies dancing are little ballerinas, and the music box is complete with drawer, back-mirror, and winding key. Sabuda's masterful The 12 Days of Christmas is full of nostalgia for the magic of childhood celebration--kids and adults alike would be happy to receive this book as a holiday gift. Another great Sabuda book.......2007-01-04
I already had this book myself, but I purchased multiple copies to give as Christmas gifts this year. I think they were very well received. I have all of Sabuda's pop up books and this one fits in nicely. If you like Sabuda's books, you'll love this one. If you don't have any of his books yet, this is a nice one to start with.
another GREAT Christmas book.......2006-11-10
If you are "into" pop-up books this is another to add to your collection. If want to sit and look and read with kids another great book. I would not give the book to the kids, as with all pop-up books this one is fragile
A real pleasure.......2006-02-04
This is a great book to share for all ages. Kids and adults are fascinated by the ingenius pop-ups. A great low tech reminder of the wide-eyed wonder that makes Christmas fun.

Joan Irvine's Ideas.......2002-04-04
Joan Irvine's book, "How to make POP-UPS," has more than fifty ideas that will be helpful to beginning teachers. It is also helpful to anyone who enjoys working with crafts. This book is filled with all sorts of ideas that range from making a pop-up strip, to making a cage, to making your own trapeze book. Irvine commences the book by suggesting the materials(paper, scissors, string, rubber bands, buttons etc...) to be used. Then,Irvine informs the reader of the symbols and definitions to be utilized on each individual pop-up. Irvine also gives helpful suggestions for folding, cutting, and measuring. I suggest this book to anyone who enjoys making crafts.
Lots of Pop-Up Fun!.......2000-02-03
I purchased this book hoping to find out a few tricks beyond the simple "strip" style pop up. I was very pleasantly surprised to find instructions for turning circles, 3-D cages, and sliders, among others! Given the number of projects included in the book, I feel it's an exceptional value! Instructions and diagrams were clear and easy for me to follow and I look forward to sharing some of these projects at my local elementary school, where I volunteer as art director for a 5/6th grade combination class. Children will definitely enjoy creating these simple, but impressive ideas!
Great beginner book on Popups.......1996-06-07
Although written for children, the methods learned in this book
can be carried over to any type of pop-up cards. Also shows you
how to make a noise-maker card, a card with a slide and a card
with a rubber band powered "car" on it. Lots of good ideas.

Who can resist opening a door or lifting a flap just to see what's inside? No one. And that's why this seasonal, alphabetical pop-up book has become such a Christmas favorite. Beneath each lettered flap is an intricate three-dimensional paper cutout of a holiday-related object that starts with the same letter (A for angel, B for bell, C for candle). The cutouts, emerging from colorful squares, are all made of crisp white paper--creating an origami elegance. Yet the paper sculptures are decidedly joyful and unpredictable, like the exploding shreds of paper beside the title "unwrap" under the letter U. Robert Sabuda made his first pop-up book when he was 8 years old, but abandoned the art when he failed to figure out how to make the cyclone twirl in The Wizard of Oz. Apparently, he's finally mastered the art of motion, since many of the pop-ups feature movements such as flight for the angel, and the tender joining of lips for the kiss of two reindeer. Sabuda has also mastered the art of whimsy, making The Christmas Alphabet, The 12 Days of Christmas, and Cookie Count seasonal staples in households of children young and old. Great book, but all were damaged.......2007-09-27
This book is really nice, but arrived with smudges and spots (looked like mold) on most of the pages. I bought 3 of these that I sent back, but the replacements arrived damaged as well. All have gone back. What a disappointment.
Good deal, but poor quality.......2007-09-27
The book itself is a wonderful book, with amazing pop-up graphics. I purchased 20 of these to give as Christmas gifts because they were at a very good price ($4.59 each). However, I was very disappointed when I received them because they were of poor quality, perhaps explaining the discounted price. Almost all of the books had glue (or possibly mold) spots throughout the white pages. Several also had bent corners and scratched covers. I am in the process of returning them all to Amazon for a refund. Too bad.
Christmas Wonder.......2007-08-28
All of Robert Sabuda's books are works of art. The intricate papercutting of the pop-ups makes each page a wonder. This book could easily become a family heirloom and tradition.
R.C. Sabuda's pop-up books.......2007-08-11
Ever since Sabuda published his book, America the Beautiful, I have been giving his pop-up books as
holiday gifts. The recipients love them and look forward to seeing what comes next. They won't be disapointed by the latest gift they will receive in December, the Christmas Alphabet book. It is everybit as creative and beautiful as his other books. Also, the books were on sale so I purchased them in July for December. Of course, I save a book for myself. My artist friends really appreciate the skill needed to create the books. Thanks Robert Clarke Sabuda for the joy the books have given many of the children and adults in my life.
