Wonderful addition to any Artists library.......2007-05-13
I found this book a valuable addition to my library. As an Artist it proved to be a wonderful learning tool, with detailed explainations, examples, and a number of practical step by step learning project. It has added great depth to my paintings. I would recommend it to both experienced artist and beginners. Beautiful colour photos!!!
Excellent Book on Color.......2007-01-25
This is an excellent book for learning color theory. You can tell she loves teaching because she doesn't hold back. She is really trying to help you learn the concepts. She paints in an impressionist style, but her methods would work no matter what your style is.
I liked it.......2006-09-01
It just didn't motivate me like I wanted it to.... so I sold it. But, it does have some good steps to getting that impressionistic look. I suggest trying out the book by Susan Sarback, Capturing Radiant Color in Oils (Paperback)
ISBN: 1581800614. I've been on her website, and she has some remarkable paintings as well.
awesome.......2006-08-26
This discussed painting in a way I needed to hear. It was easy to work with and inspired ideas for me to try. Great book
Good source of info!.......2006-07-07
I learned so much from this book. I started painting about 3 years ago and I just painted a little bit more realistically and now I can actually paint in a more impressionist way! Very informing... satisfied + customer

Unusual Depth and Accessibility.......2004-08-30
This is an excellent overview of impressionist painting as well as a good introduction to painting methodology in a particular historical context. The author provides the reader with a basis for really understanding the aesthetic agenda of the impressionists by explaining the context in which it developed; traditional academic painting, material changes in the artist's media, the influence of photography, political undercurrents and broader social change, as well as the character of each individual painter.
But it's the illustrations that really make this book useful, engaging you both through ideas and concrete examples of their application. Great for the painter, fans of impressionism, or anyone wanting to understand the visual arts.
Very detailed and inspiring.......2004-07-08
There seem to be so many books on the techniques of the old Masters, but it's very difficult to find books on actual painting techniques of the Impressionists. This book discusses this topic in extreme detail. Small sections of paintings are magnified with arrows pointing to specific areas, describing how they were probably done and with which paint colors.
As a context to the primary subject matter, you also get a fair amount of art history. This part I found interesting as well.
I read this book for hours at a time and was thoroughly fascinated and inspired. If you love the Impressionists and (especially) if you are a painter yourself, you will really appreciate this book.
Book Description
Sumi-e is the classic painting style of Japan, and its graceful simplicity is admired around the world. A natural follow-up to the best-selling The Sumi-e Book, The Sumi-e Dream Book demonstrates how to take the classic brushstrokes of sumi-e to a new level of painting, where creativity is inspired by deeply felt memories and spiritual expression. First, sumi-e artist Yolanda Mayhall provides a brief history and explains the philosophy behind this classic Japanese painting style. She highlights its many masters, one of them her ancient mentor the master brush painter, woodblock, and dream journey artist Hokosai. Next, she reviews the classic materials and the basic brushstrokes of sumi-e known as the Four Gentlemen: Bamboo, Wild Orchid, Chrysanthemum, and Plum Branch, along with their variations. Finally, Mayhall puts it all together to demonstrate the sumi-e art of dream journey painting. Readers will learn a variety of creative and exciting techniques for using color to add a delightful dimension to the sumi-e image as well as discover exciting techniques for visually capturing important life memories and spiritual reflections in a painting.

The Semi-e Dream book.......2007-05-12
Its ok but I thought it was going to be more step by step and its not. Good book thow.
A Bit Shallow.......2006-11-11
Very nice pictures and some good description on Sumi-e dreamjourney painting. However, as an artist looking for more detailed explanations on techniques, I was quite disappointed. If I was just interested in general ideas on this type of painting the book would be great, but as an artist I was disappointed in the way the material was presented. For example, loading the brush was glossed over.
Good paintings, but not sumi-e.......2005-01-19
This book might be interesting as some artistic approach to make paintings. the paintings are not bad. But they are not sumi-e. They are rather aquarelle, that mimics eastern paintings.
IMHO the key thing, that makes Yolanda paintings look different is her technique of brushstokes, which are very typical to the western aquarelle school. The original sumi-e brushstrokes are based on brushstokes of chinese (well, and japanese as well) calligraphy, and this is one of the characteristics that variate paintings of differnt masters.
Still, the book text is a good transcription of sumi-e/brush painting concept. Just for the painting examples I'd suggest to look at the works of the "original" artists.
A real "dream" for those interested in Sumi-e Painting.......2004-04-09
Being an afficionado of Chinese Brush painting, I was intrigued when I first saw this book. I'm not easily impressed by art books, and I've reviewed hundreds over the years, but this is one of those books that actually surprised me. It really is a dream for artists intersted in the brush painting of China and Japan. Here's why...
Mayhall's style is both beautiful and spontaneous, and the imagery in this book is breathtaking. What is really refreshing about this book, however, is that it isn't just another *how to* brush technique book. While she does go into great detail on history, materials, technique, and subject matter, the artist puts you into the mindset of a Sumi-e artist. Rather than simply show her readers "how" to paint, Mayhall encourages them to begin their own journey into Sumi-e "dream" painting, and equips them with the knowledge necessary to find their own artistic voice. She states, "it is not only the subject that gives life to art, it is the spirit that is within the artist's genius." Well said!
Material covered in this text includes:
* Chapter 1 - A Brief History of Sumi-e
* Chapter 2 - Studying the Dream Journey Painters of China and Japan
* Chapter 3 - Starting on Your Own Dream Journey (tools, brush strokes)
* Chapter 4 - Practicing the Four Gentlemen (bamboo, wild orchid, chrysanthemum, plum branch)
* Chapter 5 - Beginning the Creative Process (incorporating the four gentlemen)
* Chapter 6 - Learning Advanced Brush Strokes for Birds & Flowers (Yo birds, iris, hummingbirds & its flowers)
* Chapter 7 - Internalizing the Three Essential Elements of Sumi-e (creativity, composition, color)
* Chapter 8 - Planning the Journey (sketching, structure, Exploring new techniques, beginning your dream journey)
* Chapter 9 - Dreaming (more ideas & demonstrations)
* Chapter 10 - Enhancing Your Dream Paintings (calligraphy)
If you're interested in the brush painting style of China and Japan, or would like to incorporate these techniques into your watercolor and/or ink painting, I recommend this book along with "Chinese Painting Techniques for Exquisite Watercolors" by Lian Quan Zhen... two excellent books to inspire you and bring your own artistic dreams to life.
Friend and admirer.......2003-07-17
As a long time friend and collector of Yolanda's beautiful paintings, I was overjoyed to see her latest book. I have found it to be not only well organized and illustrated but written in a style that is easily understood and followed. The inclusion of historical and contemporary works accompanied by poetic translations elevates the instructional format to a book to be cherished for its contribution to understanding the mysterious and ancient culture of Japan.
Book Description
From its earliest days, photography could not escape the pictorial traditions that had gone before it. This book, the first comprehensive study of Pictorialism in Europe, analyses the remarkable diversity of approaches taken by photographers across the continent whose practice was infused with contemporary debate about photography's relationship to art. Written by an international team of art and photography historians, Impressionist Camera examines the ways in which practitioners realized their pictorial vision, from the re-creation of Academic painting in photography to the use of soft focus to lend images an impressionistic quality. Also explored are the cross-currents with photography in America - where Pictorialism went on to flourish - including the seminal work of Alfred Stieglitz.

Captures the creations and sentiments of the era........2006-09-24
Pictorial photography flourished at the turn of the 20th century and crossed genres, styles and international borders as it produced celebrated artists and fostered artistic change. Here to celebrate these changes is Impressionist Camera: Pictorial Photography in Europe, 188-1918, a narrowed focus on European community photography approaches. Selections consider how photographers created unique works and visions, how they influenced on another, and how they contributed to the fusion and symbolism of pictorial photography as a genre. This book represents the first comprehensive country-by-country examination on the topic and draws together contributions by an international team of art and photography scholars and historians. Sepia and black and white photos throughout capture the creations and sentiments of the era.

A fine overview of the subject, beautifully illustrated.......2006-10-25
Ron Ransom has written a popular series of books for student painters, featuring his own techniques and illustrated with his own paintings. This book is something different. It is a tribute to his favorite watercolorists, illustrated with excellent reproductions and with a text that is respectful and full of usefull insights.
The term "impressionist" is used here in the sense of painters who work directly from their observation of nature. (This is not a book about the French Impressionist school of painting, although many of them were gifted watercolorists). Some of the painters are contemporary artists who are still working, and others are from the past. They all express a love of nature through their work, although they vary quite a bit in their individual styles.
Although it's not strictly a how-to manual, student painters can learn a lot from the book. BUt you don't need to be a painter to enjoy it. If you love watercolor paintings, and are curious about the thought processes and methods used by topnotch painters in this medium, you will enjoy this lovely book.
a delightful book.......2006-04-04
a useful survey of various prominent watercolorists, the book provides fundamental information about each artist, leading to the conclusion that however techniques may vary, the basic ingredient to produce great art is hard work and dedication.
An inspiring glimpse of some wonderful painters..........1999-06-07
The paintings of Edward Seago, Edward Wesson, Douglas Treasure, John Yardley and others more well known to Americans, such as Frank Webb and Claude Croney, are featured in this book. Ron briefly touches on each artist as a person and what inspired or inspires them to paint, and illustrates it all with a representative selection of their works. A very informative book and a good one to have for reference in one's art collection, as there aren't many watercolor impressionist books around.
Book Description
Monet, Van Gogh, Sargent . . . the master impressionists hold an esteemed place in art history, and their output has influenced every generation of artists to follow. Now, artists seeking to capture the radiance and subtlety of impressionism in watercolor can learn the techniques of the masters for themselves. Divided into four parts, Painting the Impressionist Watercolor offers a complete overview to the essentials of impressionism, its colorful evolution, and varied techniques. Part 1 introduces readers to the history of the art form, and explains how its methods apply to watercolor. Part 2 details necessary materials and prepares readers for painting. Part 3 presents step-by-step lessons on how to render a wide range of light effects in still life through simple block exercises (which allow beginners to learn about color and light without the distractions of a complex subject). Part 4 takes readers beyond the basics and into more complex arenas such as textures and lighting conditions.

Neither useful nor interesting..............2007-09-16
I found this book dull and boring; neither useful nor interesting. Many words, saying little..... There are hundreds of books on watercolor that are far better.
interesting.......2007-01-10
Very interesting but not for beginers.
There's only one quote on the book that i found it is very "absolut" and didn't like it: "Limited palletes is for limited minds". I guess the writer did not consider very well this. Very very great and important impressionist painters have used a limited pallete too....
great advice for still life artists.......2006-08-03
"Painting the Impressionist Watercolor" is a nicely written book, but not what I expected or wanted. The focus of this book is still life -- painting from a set of real life items that are right there in front of you. The approach taken is impressionism -- getting the feeling for the object, instead of a completely faithful rendering. Particular interest is paid to shadows and reflected color in shadows. The book includes several generally worded exercises, and more specific exercises with step-by-step instruction.
I like and appreciate the impressionist approach, but am not interested in still life. The advice in this book is very much tailored to still life, and much of it does not appear to be generally applicable. Although the author presumes the reader has already had a basic introduction to watercolor technique, this book can be appreciated by beginners as well as intermediate artists.
If you enjoy painting still life, add 1-star to my rating; and if you like step-by-step examples, add another star.
Inspired Me to Continue with Watercolor.......2006-04-14
I was at the point of giving up watercolor - it was too fussy, I didn't have time for the perfect conditions or studio with kids, and I frankly didn't get the necessity of doing layer upon layer of washes. I saw this book in the library, checked it out, and could not put it down. It absolutely transformed the way I paint. Needless to say, I bought the book, have done every exercise in it, and it has made me a much better painter.
My primary medium is art quilts, and I was able to apply the lesson I learned from Lee's book to my quilts as well, and I have been winning awards with them ever since. It really made me see colors differently, and that is reflected in my art.
Boynton is not a traditional watercolorist - he isn't concerned with transparency, but with color. This book is about COLOR, COLOR, COLOR! In fact, Boynton tells his students to SCREAM at him with color. When I read that, I said sign me up.
His method is wet-in-wet and takes several attempts to get the hang of it, but don't quit. The results are well worth it.
Classic Watercolor Book.......2005-02-23
This is a wonderful book that is sure to become a classic. When I select an art book there are generally two things I am looking for. First can the author paint and second can the author teach. Lee Boynton does both exceptionally well. His paintings are beautiful and truly impressionistic. When I look at his paintings great watercolorists like Sargent and Homer come to mind. Regarding the teaching ability of the author he with the assistance of one of his former students (Gottlieb) do an exceptional job of communicating his approach to painting. This book will teach you how to look at your painting subjects with the eyes of impressionist. He primarily does this through two demonstrations exercises one painting blocks and the second painting a still life. At the end of each chapter there are additional exercises that help to reinforce what you have learned. In addition to the demonstrations there are many other chapters covering various other important topics.
Please note that I agree that this is not a good book for someone just starting out in watercolor. He doesn't teach you how to lay a wash for example. For this I would recommend "The Watercolor Book" by Dewey or something similar. That being said I do not think you need to be an advanced painter to learn from this book. I have only been painting in watercolor for about nine months and benefited greatly from this book.
In closing, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interesting in painting impressionistic watercolors. If you would like to view Boynton's work you might want to check out his web site at www.leeboynton.com

Famous for outdoor scenes bathed in light, the impressionists are hard to imagine as dedicated still-life painters. By and large, they weren't. But Monet's rare small paintings of flowers were snapped up by contemporary collectors. And several artists who exhibited with the impressionists, influenced them, or were influenced by them--including Manet, van Gogh, Gauguin, and Cézanne--devoted a sizable portion of their oeuvre to the genre. While Impressionist Still Life is a somewhat misleading title--yet another marketing ploy to attract lovers of a popular style, it seems--this book makes a good case for the importance of this intimate genre of painting to major themes and techniques of later-19th-century art. Published in conjunction with an exhibition of the same name at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. (September 22, 2001, to January 13, 2002, then traveling to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston), this volume is lavishly illustrated and rich in detailed information. Five essays trace themes ranging from the influence of 18th-century painter Jean-Baptiste Chardin on still-life composition and the use of color to the strikingly modern way Cézanne's famous apples devalued subject matter to emphasize the physicality of brush strokes. The stunning paintings featured in full-page plates include some rarely seen canvases, such as Monet's Jar of Peaches from 1866. In this tour de force of illusionism, the flattened look of peaches packed in a glass jar contrasts with fuzzy whole peaches that cast reflections on a marble table scribbled with bold white veins. A genre that could encompass both the luminous intimacy of Eva Gonzalès' White Shoes and the restless drama of Cézanne's Still Life with Ginger Jar and Eggplants turned out to be uniquely suited to individual perceptions of modern life. --Cathy Curtis
Book Description
The popularity of still-life painting continues to soar-as evidenced by the success of Abrams' recent book on Manet's still lifes, as well as by several major museum exhibitions. With lush colorplates reproducing more than 65 masterworks by 17 Impressionist artists, this exceptional collection of still lifes is a brilliant display of the genre in all its glory.
Van Gogh, Renoir, Cézanne, Gauguin, Pissarro, Monet, and Manet are among the artists featured. Illuminating the paintings are an introduction by Eliza Rathbone and essays on the still-life tradition and the influence of Chardin. This handsome volume accompanies an exhibition at the Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C., and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Beautiful images.......2004-12-30
This book is just gorgeous! The essays are interesting and engaging and the plates are beautiful. Besides the most well known impressionists, you will find an Eva Gonzales, and BEST OF ALL--GUSTAVE CAILLBOTTE!! Buy it, you will not be disappointed.
Impressionist Still Life.......2002-01-06
I was surpised to learn new information that Manet made still lifes with the same-like object used in Chardin's paintings. They were arranged differently or presented in a different manner. There is infomation you cannot obtain when visiting exhibits or museums. It is hard to put the book down once you start reading. This is the first still life book on impressionism I have ever seen. And, it gives more information on still life in general. I am a professional artist and have felt still lives were boring and couldn't really get into them. Because this book excited me to look at still lives and do them, it deserves and 5-star rating.
More than 80 masterworks of still-life painting.......2001-10-15
Impressionist Still Life showcases more than 80 masterworks of still-life painting by seventeen Impressionists working in the latter half of the nineteenth-century. The featured artists include Cezanne, van Gogh, Monet, Cassatt, Degas, Manet, Renoir, Pissarro, Caillbotte, and Gauguin. Impressionist Still Life is the companion book to a traveling exhibition currently touring the United States beginning with The Philips Collection, Washington, DC (September 22, 2001 - January 13, 2002) and then traveling to The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (February 17 to June 9, 2002). A strongly recommended addition to academic, personal, and community library artbook collections, the superbly reproduced paintings comprising Impressionist Still Life are enhanced with informative essays by noted art scholars Eliza Rathbone (Phillips Collection); George Shackelford (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston); Jeannene M. Pryblyski (independent art historian and critics based in San Francisco); John McCoubrey (University of Pennsylvania); and Richard Shiff (University of Texas, Austin).

A nice book with good information and images........2006-06-09
This book is divided into 5 parts listed below. The reprint of the revised edition I have (ISBN 0823037126 , 1992) states that it is the revised edition in color. Additionally, the jacket states that the original text is now supplemented by 135 full color reproductions and 40 color details. So avoid the original if you want the color plates.
For each artist, the author discusses known materials, methods, palettes and more. Likewise when it comes to many of the images and details there are specific references to colors and application - though not enough to justify buying the book on that alone.
In all, it's a nice book with good information and images. Unfortunately I can't compare it to other books because I have none on the impressionists, but hopefully the other information I have provided will help you.
Part 1: Masters of the Earlier Nineteenth Century - Covers John Constable (8 pgs), J.M.W. Turner (10 pgs) , Edouard Manet (1 pg), and Gustave Courbet (10 pgs).
Part 2: The Impressionist Masters - Covers Claude Monet (10 pgs), Pierre Auguste Renoir (12 pgs), Camille Pissaro (8 pgs), and Edgar Degas (14 pgs)
Part 3: After Impressionism - Covers Paul Cezanne (10 pgs) and Georges Seurat (10 pgs)
Part 4: Three Americans in Europe - Covers Mary Cassatt (8 pgs), John singer Sargent (8 pgs) and James McNeill Whistler (10 pgs)
Part 5: Three Heirs of Impressionism - Covers Edouard Vuillard (8 pgs), Pierre Bonnard (6 pgs) and Walter Richard Sickert (6 pgs).
Book Description
Brothers Sterling and Stephen Clark—heirs to the Singer sewing machine fortune—were among the twentieth century’s most influential art collectors. This volume examines their magnificent collections, their personal lives and public profiles, and their significant roles in the history of American museums.
While the brothers shared a love for great art, they collected in different ways. Sterling was a private collector; his French Impressionist masterpieces, including thirty-eight Renoirs, and works by such American artists as Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, Frederic Remington, and Mary Cassatt now form the distinguished collection of the Clark. Stephen, a businessman and museum trustee, acquired modern works by such masters as Georges Seurat, Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and Vincent van Gogh, often with specific museum collections in mind—including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Yale University Art Gallery.
Handsomely produced, this book features over two hundred illustrations of the works from Sterling’s and Stephen’s collections. It also includes essays by distinguished scholars, an illustrated chronology, and a previously unpublished checklist of works purchased by Stephen Clark.
