Book Description

A comprehensive introduction to the materials, tools, equipment, and techniques used to make unique beads with a variety of shapes, colors, and finishes. The straightforward instructions discuss topics that include conditioning raw clay and making simple shapes; producing more complex shapes, such as rounds, canes, and spirals; decorating the beads with foils, powders, and milléfiori; and creating faux effects like ivory, bone, turquoise, marble, and silver. A gallery of beads by internationally renowned artists, hundreds of step-by-step photographs of new beads designed by the author, and a clay gauge that allows one to estimate how much clay is necessary to make a specific quantity of beads are included, making this a comprehensive guide that will provide inspiration, demonstrate the range of effects that can be achieved in polymer clay, and teach beaders how to incorporate these beads into jewelry designs.

5 out of 5 stars Lives up to the hype.......2007-10-01

I love this book!!! I'm relatively new to polymer clay and have much to learn. I'd purchased three other books before this one, and while they had some great inspiration, I found them lacking in the how-to's. This book came highly recommended, and I'd say that if you can buy only one book on polymer clay, get this one. The author goes over all the basics, including tools and additional materials, with very clear pictures and instructions. Many other books seem to make it all seem very easy, but leave out some steps not always obvious to the beginner. This book really covers all the steps. While this book is all about making beads, the techniques covered can be applied to all kinds of projects. 5 big stars!!!

5 out of 5 stars Making Polymer Clay Beads.......2007-09-28

This is one of the finest "how-to" books that I have ever owned and/or read. The instructions are clear and self explanatory. The scope is broad and illuminating. The illustrations are so good they could almost stand alone. I highly reccommend this book to anyone interested in learning to make their own polymer clay beads.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Awesome Book.......2007-09-04

Finally a book dedicated to nothing but making beads from Polymer Clay. The step by step instructions are so easy to follow and the examples are incredible. This is a must have book to any serious bead maker and jewelry maker alike.

1 out of 5 stars Just copies of real beads!!.......2007-08-21

I bought this book and am sending it back today. If I wanted to make copies of real beads, I would just buy the real beads. You don't save anything with the time you invest and all the supplies you need. It would actually be cheaper to buy the real beads. The shoe beads that were advertised "as in the book", are not in the book. And neither is anything else of interst. Make your own designs and get a life.

5 out of 5 stars Making Polymer Clay Beads.......2007-08-15

I enjoyed this book very much. It was very helpful in generating new creative ideas and a vast range of techniques. Wll be very informative to those just starting out and those of us who have been doing this for a while.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners to experts!.......2005-11-03

This is a super set to learn from and refer back to! If you're a beginner - check it out! There's so much to learn from it!

5 out of 5 stars must have for any lamp worker.......2005-08-04

this set is the best/ most information i have seen for learning to lampwork. packed with information it covers most techniques and even guides the beginner on how to set up a studio, great buy, worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars The best book in its class.......2003-12-30

If you could have only one book, it would be wise to consider this one. I have been in this industry many years and this is by far the best book I have seen out there.

2 out of 5 stars It's Just OKAY!.......2003-12-24

To the naive public this book is great! Riddled with typos and inconsistant captions this book is not ideal for understanding formal flameworking. The book includes information about the masters and their techniques but trivializes their skill by including no-names and wanna-be's along side. A good amount of important technical information is provided, but through a string of often choppy inconsistant paragraph fragments. This is an excellent PICTURE BOOK leaving a lot to be desired from the academic artisan. Is a great reference for suppliers. In many cases the information falls short of being cohesive and understandable. Recommended for the glass-goer. Recommended for the amateur glassblower (for inspiration). Has popular appeal void of substance.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely amazing.......2003-01-20

It should get more stars than five, the history of lampworking portion of the book is almost worth the price of the book itself. The history portion is only a small portion of the set. I have been doing lampworking for about 3 years now and I search the internet for anything reguarding lampworking often and this book set has tons of stuff I have never seen. excellent.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A most.......2007-08-31

I rebuilt my bathroom and completely renovated the shower. This book was my bible. Of course I had other references and ideas to use, but pretty much kept to this book. I had it there by my side while constructing everything from the shower pan, shower walls and tiling it all. Sure I could have done it without this book and my wife would have made me hire a professional to redo my job.

Not to brag, but with the advice from this book people think that a professional DID remodel my bathroom. There is so much satisfaction in doing it yourself and to get a the results as good (and sometimes better) as a pro...

5 out of 5 stars An excellent overview.......2007-06-22

John Bridge has put together an excellent reference for the experienced and novice tile setter alike, and if you're looking to learn the basics to put together a project for the first time, this book is a must read. John's light, conversational style makes the book a quick read, and as mentioned in another review, the online forum on the author's website is also an invaluable reference.

Highly recommended to those who need a to learn the ABCs of tile.

5 out of 5 stars Tile Your World.......2007-05-13

I bought the bookas a gift for a friend who is quite interested in home renovation technique. She was thrilled by it and judging by her reaction, it must be an informative and well written book.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know!.......2007-02-13

This is the ultimate book for tile setters and for those who want to be tile setters. John focuse on all of the little things that the amateurs don't. focus on. The actual tiling itself is the last thing he focuse on. He will teach you the science of laying different types of tiles. You will learn everyting from floor deflection to room layout to determing the square footage and much more. I even learned of a new underlayment product made by Schluter that does not transfer cracks to the tiles due to structural movement and also a waterproofing membrane to use in shower tile installations! I have learned so much Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for me - Novice/JOAT.......2007-02-06

We recently built our new home & I used this book & Setting Tile (Fine Homebuilding) to do all the tile work. One of our best & proudest features is the masterbath I built with lg garden tub and oversized corner dual head shower with dual niche all tiled together - We love it. I can't believe I was able to do it all with friends & family and alot of sweat/work.

Saved thousands over best few estimates. I see why the labor is so pricy now....

Recommend both books.

Book Description

In the hands of an expert ceramist, the once-simple cup can become an extraordinary work of art--as these 500 magnificent examples so beautifully prove. The exciting pieces come from an international array of artists, each with a unique perspective. The stylishly varied collection has a little bit of everything: the cups range from handbuilt to wheel-thrown, practical to sculptural, round to square. Benjamin Schulman's "Stacked Teacup Set" takes a strictly functional approach, while Heather O'Brien's "Dessert Cups on Stand" focuses on aesthetic form rather than usefulness. Annette Gates' "Espresso Shot Cups with Rubies" has a surface design of simple abstract lines and dots of glaze and jewels. Some are whimsical, others starkly conceptual. Every one is a treat for the eye.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great idea book.......2007-01-09

I bought this for a pottery student of mine after she bought the teapot book. Both are great fodder for the potter's imagination, and for me, a wonderful set of examples that get me away from the idea that my own pottery has to be as "perfect" as a wedgwood teacup. The pitcher book will be the next to grace the shelves of my studio library.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Potters and Art Lovers.......2006-12-19

We just opened the pottery area of our store this year. The learning curve is steep: setting up the studio, hiring teachers, choosing clay bodies and glazes, and wheels, repairing kilns and firing other peoples work! So, I have purchased a lot of pottery books recently! This one is very cool. It doesn't teach you how to make anything, but it is a great way to see a huge variety of possibilites. I just love looking through it. There are several cups in there that I want to try to build (when I get better skills). The Lark Ceramics books are excellent resource books-stock your library up with them. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars 500 Cups: Ceramic Explorations of Utility and Grace.......2006-03-23

It is a good reference book for the ceramic artist and collector. It provides wonderful pictures, inspiration, and ideas.

4 out of 5 stars A formidable tour of the art of ceramic cup-making.......2006-02-18

Anyone who thinks there is very little difference between one cup and another would have that notion blown away by simply flipping open any page of this book. When the teacher of a local community college pottery course saw this book, she asked everyone in her classes to refer to it before beginning to design their next cup projects. It opened their minds to some of the infinite possibilities available to practitioners of the potter's craft.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!.......2006-01-16

Lark publishes fabulous books for ceramic lovers and this is no exception. The Cup book is the series' third in my personal library.

Book Description

The first comprehensive how-to book on the topic! Contemporary ceramists have adapted traditional printmaking procedures to transfer images onto clay surfaces. And, with this thorough resource, anyone can take advantage of these techniques in their own home studio—even those with no printmaking background. The simple processes don’t require fancy equipment. Use silk-screen decals with light-sensitive emulsions to create a master image: then cover with glazes, and voilá! Use colored slips for unique monoprints. Work with stencils, relief blocks, or stamps, trying a variety of materials to mark the clay surface. Each method is carefully laid out in numerous photos, and shown on a finished piece. More than 100 images by leading contemporary artists showcase the techniques and provide a wealth of inspiration.

I am a potter and I run a "paint your own pottery" studio. This book was just what I needed to ensure customer requests (as well as my own requirements) can be met as needed. Specifically I was interested in decal transfer to pottery, and the answer is complete in this book. I would recommend it to any potter or pyop studio owner. It's an invaluable resource.

Five hundred inspiring variations on the simple, functional bowl will fire any potter's imagination. Displayed on each page are bowls that reinvent and reinterpret the form, and use techniques from across the globe and through the centuries. More importantly, every piece, such as Kate Maury's wheel-thrown porcelain, Stephen F. Fabrico's slab-built bowl with handles, and Ruchika Madan's stoneware Fruit Bowl, testifies to the artist's boundless inventiveness. Captions give each bowl's size, with details on its material and glazes.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration from 500 beautiful clay bowls.......2007-05-14

I'm a clay artist who does hand building...My teacher brought in this book to share with our
pottery class. I and the rest of the class were simply blown away by the originality and brilliance of these clay artists. We spent half the class passing the book around and saying to one anothr "how about THIS one?"
None of us wanted to put the book down and get back to working on our own pieces.

The book is quite reasonable in price and I was so captivated by these beautiful photographs that I went ahead and bought the the other two books in the series which are specific to animals and teapots...The photographs on each page are simply spectacular...memorable....something I wouldn't directly copy in my own work, but much of it is just insipirational...and informative. Description of how the piece was fired...the method for it's execution (whether hand or wheel built). These books are a collection of the most original works I've ever seen. Although I don't build animals of out clay, I'm as thrilled to own each book from this series as I am
"500 Bowls".

5 out of 5 stars Inspired!.......2007-04-04

This book is beautifully photgraphed, like all the 500 series books, and weather you put it on your coffee table or in your studio, it lights up the imagination and inspires the artist.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful simple bowls.......2006-12-06

It is the simplicity of the bowl on the cover that draw us in, though it is difficult, as there is no cover credit in the edition I own, to find who that artist is. Deep inside we find that bowl and another by potter/artist Judy Motzkin. Patient searching pays off. This elegant little book, with this elegant saggar fired bowl on the cover is a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly different.......2006-11-13

I am astonished that anyone could find this book a dissapointment! Only, not, when I read the reveiws that were not too great were written by people who wanted a more functional or traditional result,perhaps...
I like it.Once again, this book opened up an area in my own artistic approach-to "think outside the Bowl"! If you are an artist,or sculptor that has been at it a good 10 or 15 years,as I am,and you need a new vien to tap, this is a great book to get.Mostly,I found it treated the surfaces, interior or exterior, like a canvas.not a vessel to be filled with cereal or mashed potatoes, but as an object,to be viewed, and give the onlooker an "eyeful" It's again, one of the best in the lark 500 books.

5 out of 5 stars Bowl (n) 1. A hemispherical vessel..........2005-08-21

I have a hunger for bowls. Objects that can hold other objects, particularly food, fascinate me. This book feeds my hunger with beautiful color photos of more bowls than my brain can hold in one sitting. Bowls that make me laugh, purr, gasp with amazement, and covet. Oh how I covet. Bowls that hold other bowls that hold other bowls...
And for the frustrated potter in me, the information on glazes and firing deepens my appreciation of each and every hemispherical vessel. I'll have this one, and that one, and the little one over there...

Book Description

No other volume has ever presented such a diverse and captivating collection of contemporary animal-themed ceramics. Juried by distinguished artist and educator Joe Bova, this magnificent gallery includes pieces from an international group of artists; the beautifully crafted works range from the representational to the abstract, from artful realism to provocative surrealism (including animal-human hybrids). Ann Marais’ image of a waterfowl painted onto a porcelain dish has a restrained, Asian quality. Sharkus’ painted and smoke-fired stoneware turtle could easily be mistaken for the living creature. Bova provides astute and illuminating commentary overall, with selected artists’ notes.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars 500 animals in clay.......2007-08-28

Without being able to review the book beforehand, I was disappointed that the figures were so very complex. I had hoped that judging from the cover bunny that they may match my elementary start at sculping simple clay figures.

5 out of 5 stars Not zoology 101...........2007-08-26

I work in ceramic materials, and this book has to be right beside 500 figures as my 2 very favorite books from lark. I am not bothered by the lack of technical information, usually if one has been working in ceramics for a while, it is pretty easy to see what the artist used, and the book does provide descriptions in glazing methods and clay bodies!
Mostly, I found this book a hoot in seeing how other artist view critters, the artistic interpretation is amazing, and often very humorous! Again, I took my copy to the shared studio I work in, and everyone was spellbound at the variety of works...My copy is getting a bit dusy now...I might order a second one, and give my old one to the studio library...

5 out of 5 stars Great inspirational book.......2007-05-20

As a potter, I love books like this just as much as those with more technical information. I turn to them over and over when the muse is taking a little siesta. Tons of great ideas here for everyone, no matter what your style.

5 out of 5 stars 500 Animals in Clay: Contemporary Expressions of the Animal Form.......2007-01-15

Like all the 500 Lark books this one has beautiful photographs and lots of inspiration. If you are an animal lover, and ceramist, like I am you will love it. I would like a little more information about how the pieces are created, but that is rarely the case with these books - still well worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars Great Idea Resource.......2007-02-26

I bought this book and looked through it with post its to label all the interesting teapot ideas I was drawn to. When considering this book, I wasn't particularly drawn to the cover teapot and wondered if I would be disappointed in the authors picks, but I wasn't. This is a great visual resource for my classroom and studio.

As someone else has commented, I would have given this book 5 stars if the author hadn't repeated multiple photos of very similar teapots by the same artist.

5 out of 5 stars teapots galore.......2006-11-13

A beautiful book on contemporary approaches to a traditional vessel.I am not into funtion as I am into form, but what a book! I am glad I bought it.Sometimes,I found that despite my aversion to making utilitarian things, there is so much I do derive from the pictures that I can adapt the notion of form and function to a sculptural work, independent of the notion of tea pot.

5 out of 5 stars art teacher.......2006-11-10

As a ceramics teacher who teaches her students how to build teapots, this book is a wonderful resource. The pictures are great and it helps give students a better understanding of what a teapot can look like.

5 out of 5 stars I'm not a little teapot..........2005-08-20

But if I were a little teapot, I'd be one of the beautiful ones in this book. There are teapots both plain, and beyond description to fascinate, amuse and amaze you. If you know a little about firing ceramics, and glaze technology, the information provided will deepen your appreciation of each teapot. You may find that some of these artists are in your area, and have ceramics for sale. Or if you just like teapots, there enough teapots here in beautiful color photos to sate your appetite.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Imaginative.......2004-03-12

500 TEAPPOTS is an wonderful book and is sure to inspire both potters and tea drinkers alike. It is a wonderful companion to 500 BOWLS. I hope they publish ANOTHER 500 TEAPOTS (BOWLS, too).

5 out of 5 stars Checking for stars!.......2007-06-20

Hi,
I am the author of this book. The first review in the list of five gives a glowing report and yet rates only one star! I feel that this is a mistake. All the other reviews give the book five stars. This might be detrimentally affecting sales. I feel sure that the reviewer did not intend the single star rating with the review that he or she has given.

Perhaps you can check this out. Thanks

1 out of 5 stars Must have for your library.......2006-11-10

Not only is this book filled with beautiful color photographs and illustrations, it's packed with practical information for both beginner and advanced potters. Even non-potters who have an interest in pottery will find it an excellant source for understanding the the technical and aesthetic basics of surface decoration. As a potter and a pottery teacher, I find myself going back to the book frequently for information and ideas.

5 out of 5 stars A great reference for both beginners and advanced potters.......2006-02-18

Making Marks is an excellent reference book that both beginners and advanced potters can benefit from. It delves into all aspects of potting, and not only illustrates the results that can be achieved, it provides the "how to" for many of the processes. Any potter who has this book in their library will never run out of ideas for creating unique pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Books like this one - a definite necessity !.......2005-08-11

This is an exciting book, it is not just about painting marks on surfaces. The list of options is quite comprehensive from liquid slips, clay colour modifications, carving, underglazes, slip-trailing, lustre-ware and of course impressions and incisions made by tools. Robin Hopper is a master of clay due to the years he has be absorbed by it. He has used good quality work by various potters to display the different forms of decoration.

Surface decoration is always something you need to think in advance about before making the piece. You need to be clear what you want to see in the end, these choices will affect how smooth you want the surface to be and of course the decoration needs to be a custom-fit aesthetically for each piece. Discourse about these matters is found throughout the book.

Glaze technology is discussed in this book, though not to the depth a total beginner would like - total knowledge could be gained in a technical course.

This is one of those books that you can keep using as your understanding grows depending on where you are. Always interesting and inspiring to read about other surace decoration forms gaining knowledge all the way.

This book would also be good as a guide in a set course, chapter by chapter you could do projects eg Chapt 1: Drawing, Chapt 2: Sign & Symbol, Chapt 3: Pattern & Space, Chapt 6: Marks of Slash, Scratch, Carve & Cut etc.

All in all, a wonderful storehouse of so many ideas to have at hand !

5 out of 5 stars For the dabbler or those needing inspiration to try something new.......2005-07-09

While I'm relatively new to the art and craft of pottery, I beginning to find my own voice in my work. This book is helping me to think about differnet ways to express myself in my work. While I will probably never go out and buy a sand blaster or work with lusters, I know I have the inital reference source I need should I decide to go that way.

Possibly one of the most valuable (but not necessarily exciting sections) is his intial discussion of drawing and line. I come from a background of hard science (chemistry) and know little of formal art or the principles of "line." He explains why this is important and how to start thinking about it.

Finally, the book is a visual orgy. My husband (non potter) and I frequently sit and flip through the book to look at the examples of the various works. It becomes intoxicating. We can sit and discuss what makes one peice have that "come hither" look while another, while technically excellent, has little or no appeal to us. It has become a spring board for me in terms of astectics.

While this book will not teach you how to sand blast or give you important clues about the proper layering of airbrushed glazes, it will help you think about all of the different types of marks you can make on clay and choose the ones that call to you.
