Book Description
Stephen Hannock is considered one of the top American landscape painters working today. Represented in major international collections and reflecting a Romantic tradition that dates back to the Hudson River School, his majestic works are renowned for their extraordinarily luminous qualityan iridescence that is achieved through his signature technique of sandpaper-polished oil on canvas. The hushed reverie of earth and sky that is captured in these hauntingly evocative paintings echoes the idyllic grandeur of such forebears as J.M.W. Turner, Albert Pinkham Ryder, and Louis Remy Mignot, among other nineteenth-century masters. The Academy Award he shared for his landscapes on the film What Dreams May Come has enabled Hannocka craftsman in an art all too rareto reach an even wider audience. Reawakening one of the most significant styles of American painting, Stephen Hannock illuminates in this beautiful compendium the glorious wonder of the landscape around us.
Customer Reviews:
an incredibly beautiful book.......2000-09-29
The painings shown in this book are clearly the work of a master at the height of his career. This book is a testament to this great talent. I am a collector of Hannock's paintings. Several are illustrated and I can attest to the acccuracy of the colors.Congratulations to Stephen and Chronicle Books for an extraordinary accomplishment.

Book Description
Dean Koontz has surpassed his longtime reputation as “America’s most popular suspense novelist”(Rolling Stone) to become one of the most celebrated and successful writers of our time. Reviewers hail his boundless originality, his art, his unparalleled ability to create highly textured, riveting drama, at once viscerally familiar and utterly unique.
Author of one #1 New York Times bestseller after another, Koontz is at the pinnacle of his powers, spinning mysteries and miracles, enthralling tales that speak directly to today’s readers, balm for the heart and fire for the mind. In this stunning new novel, he delivers a tour de force of dark suspense and brilliant revelation that has all the Koontz trademarks: adventure, chills, riddles, humor, heartbreak, an unforgettable cast of characters, and a climax that will leave you clamoring for more.
Dylan O’Connor is a gifted young artist just trying to do the right thing in life. He’s on his way to an arts festival in Santa Fe when he stops to get a room for himself and his twenty-year-old autistic brother, Shep. But in a nightmarish instant, Dylan is attacked by a mysterious “doctor,” injected with a strange substance, and told that he is now a carrier of something that will either kill him...or transform his life in the most remarkable way. Then he is told that he must flee--before the doctor’s enemies hunt him down for the secret circulating through his body. No one can help him, the doctor says, not even the police.
Stunned, disbelieving, Dylan is turned loose to run for his life...and straight into an adventure that will turn the next twenty-four hours into an odyssey of terror, mystery--and wondrous discovery. It is a journey that begins when Dylan and Shep’s path intersects with that of Jillian Jackson. Before that evening Jilly was a beautiful comedian whose biggest worry was whether she would ever find a decent man. Now she too is a carrier. And even as Dylan tries to convince her that they’ll be safer sticking together, cold-eyed men in a threatening pack of black Suburbans approach, only seconds before Jilly’s classic Coupe DeVille explodes into thin air.
Now the three are on the run together, but with no idea whom they’re running from--or why. Meanwhile Shep has begun exhibiting increasingly disturbing behavior. And whatever it is that’s coursing through their bodies seems to have plunged them into one waking nightmare after another. Seized by sinister premonitions, they find themselves inexplicably drawn to crime scenes--just minutes before the crimes take place.
What this unfathomable power is, how they can use it to stop the evil erupting all around them, and why they have been chosen are only parts of a puzzle that reaches back into the tragic past and the dark secrets they all share: secrets of madness, pain, and untimely death. Perhaps the answer lies in the eerie, enigmatic messages that Shep, with precious time running out, begins to repeat, about an entity who does his work “by the light of the moon.”
By the Light of the Moon is a novel of heart-stopping suspense and transcendent beauty, of how evil can destroy us and love can redeem us--a masterwork of the imagination in which the surprises come page after page and the spell of sublime storytelling triumphs throughout.

One of my favorites!.......2007-04-28
I am an avid Koontz reader and really enjoy about half the books I read of his (the ones that are too creepy for me go to the library).
I enjoyed this book very much, and it will be in my personal library to be read again and again.
One of Koontz's best!.......2007-04-02
In fairness I should say that I'm a HUGE Dean Koontz fan to begin with but I LOVED this book. The only bad part was that it had to end. The main characters are very three dimensional, the plot was just complicated enough, the pace fast and good and, as with all Koontz's books, I'm a sucker for a happy ending. It was an exhilarating read and great fun!
This Book is a Lot of Fun.......2007-01-27
I've read almost all of Dean Koontz's fifty plus books, and this is one of the more enjoyable ones. BY THE LIGHT OF THE MOON is unique because it involves characters who develop superhuman powers, much like the characters in a comic book.
This is new territory for Koontz, but he makes it a lot of fun, and the action in this novel is fast-paced and suspenseful. This book isn't a classic, but it definitely is one of Koontz's better recent efforts, filled with humor and Koontz's unique brand of spirituality. Koontz also does a fine job of portraying a character who is autistic -- he manages to humanize the character without making him sentimental.
BY THE LIGHT OF THE MOON contains a LOT of dialogue, and therefore reads very smoothly and quickly. I read this book in a single afternoon. As other reviewers have pointed out, the ending of this novel was indeed abrupt, and almost begs for a sequel. Koontz, however, has already stated publicly that there will be no second book featuring these characters.
I heartily recommend BY THE LIGHT OF THE MOON, but my advice is to seek out other Koontz novels if you're a first time reader. In particular, try WATCHERS, FEAR NOTHING, INTENSITY, PHANTOMS, or ODD THOMAS. I also recommend TICK TOCK and LIFE EXPECTANCY if you want a more humorous novel. Those are his very best ones, and will turn you into a hardcore fan like me.
Mr. Koontz Has Done it Again.......2007-01-22
Dean Koontz has done it again. By the Light of the Moon is thrilling, and there's no doubt about it. Jillian Jackson, as well as Dylan O' Conner and his autistic brother Shepherd O' Conner all have something in common. These strangers have all been assaulted by a demented scientist and injected with a strange substance. Soon after, the three of them are forced to flee their motel, as mysterious men in black SUV's give chase. Adding to the intensity of their situation is the actual effect of the substance injected into them. They develop strange abilities. Jillian receives ominous premonitions, Dylan can feel the problems of others by touching anything they come in contact with, and Shepherd can fold space to teleport. These powers lead them to find the mystery of the scientist who kidnapped them, as well as his connection to their own pasts. This book manages to give a lot of information for a story that recalls only a few days. It portrays autism with an almost comical accuracy, and with the exception of the ending, which some may dislike, manages to stay raw and suspenseful throughout.
Mr. Koontz did his homework. His portrayals of autism are realistic. Shepherd is Dylan's autistic brother. He has very strange autistic tendencies. He frequently repeats the same word or term multiple times, and cannot be coaxed out of his trance with any sort of ease. He showers for nine minutes. Exactly nine minutes. In fact, he only eats food that is cut into squares. Shep refers to all other food as being too "shapey." The biggest issue with Shep is that he acts as if he is in his own little world. Sometimes he stands in a corner for hours, refusing to move. Even his own brother took a while before realizing that Shep was more than a burden.
This book has about four hundred and sixty pages, excluding extraneous pages at the end. Keeping that in mind, take into account that the story takes place over a time span of three days. This means that Koontz expressed more than the story at hand. However, though the time is short, much happens in a short period of time. Most of my summary took place over the first half of the novel. This is neither a compliment, nor is it a criticism. Some may like the action-packed sequences that are described in a hundred pages but only happen for five minutes. Others may feel overwhelmed.
The three main characters endure a lot. They leave a motel and escape certain death, save a woman from her knife-wielding son, confront the mystery of the death of Dylan's parents, and save a wedding from the evil of three armed assailants. This is great. Suspense? Sure. Action? Of course. My only gripe is the ending. Take NBC's Heroes and mix it in a blender with an episode of Power Rangers and you will get the ending. It's a bit too campy for my taste. The three end up settling in one area and prepare to establish new identities as......heroes. As I said before, these are my opinions. However, you have also been warned.
Overall, this is an action filled page-turner with a lot of suspense in every page. This is a book that really makes you just stand (or sit) in awe of Koontz's master storytelling skills.

The is my first book by Dean Koontz, and I am not rushing to buy another. The plot read like a bad TV movie. The overall concept was interesting, but the way it was carried out was a little hard to swallow. The science should have been researched and explained more. Also, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to take the ending seriously or not. Koontz's depiction of an autistic character, however, was comical and poignant. (As a footnote, I was led to believe that this was a horror novel, but it is not. I am not letting that affect my review, though.)

In the famed romantic tradition that only Barbara Delinsky can deliver, you'll meet emotion-packed characters who make you forget whatever it was you were doing before you picked up Coast Road. In this story, workaholic Jack McGill is brought to his knees when he learns that his ex-wife Rachel is in a coma after a car accident. When he rushes to her side to be a dutiful father to his children, he is met with abrasive verbal abuse not only from his children, but also from Rachel's best friends.
By the time the doctors tell him they don't know how long Rachel will be in the coma, Jack has reacquainted himself with his children, and fond memories have surfaced of his ex-wife and her creative artistic talent. Through Rachel's best friend, Katherine, Jack learns about a secret Rachel had hidden from him during the days they were married. The secret, revealed through artwork, is one of the many factors that thrust Jack into "introspection mode." He reevaluates his life, digging deep into his heart's desires, and decides to quit his job and stay at Rachel's side, even if she never wakes up.
Coast Road deals with some very difficult subjects, such as miscarriage, divorce, traveling husbands, breast cancer, and the ramifications of living in a coma. However, once you get past the research exposition and the bantering, you'll laugh and cry (a lot) at what this once-separated family goes through. Delinsky paints vivid pictures of Rachel, who remains in a coma for about 99 percent of the book, but you'll see that it sometimes takes a life-threatening accident to rekindle the fires of love. --Candy Paape
Book Description
Coast Road. Where life's greatest gifts come to us by accident.
Barbara Delinsky has always had a gift for creating tales of extraordinary emotional power and depth. Now this New York Times bestselling author of Three Wishes surpasses herself once again in a novel that takes readers on a journey as richly textured, colorful, and poignant as the northern California landscape in which the book is set.
Rachel Keats and Jack McGill were artists, deeply in love when they married, until the rush of life took its toll. After ten years of marriage, they divorced and went their separate ways. Jack stayed in San Francisco. Rachel moved with their two young daughters to Big Sur.
Six years later, an alarming middle-of-the-night phone call demands that Jack put aside his own busy life and career as a leading architect to rush to his ex-wife's hospital bed. While she lies lifeless, Jack maintains a bedside vigil and finds himself getting to know Rachel better than he ever did -- through their daughters, her friends, and, even more revealingly, through her art. Meanwhile, the beauty and grace of the redwood canyon where she has made their home also work their own special alchemy upon Jack. He begins to see Rachel, his daughters, and the story of his marriage with new eyes.
Coast Road celebrates those things in life that matter most -- the kinship of neighbors, the companionship of friends, and the irreplaceable time spent with children and family. In this masterful new novel, Barbara Delinsky depicts with exquisite accuracy the ties that bind each of us to those people and places we hold most dear.

If you don't have anything else to read..........2006-08-15
I happened to read this book because it was at the beach house we rented for vacation last week. The description made the book seem interesting, but it was very one-dimensional & the characters were so stereotyped that they are not believable.
For Rachel to have loved (still love) Jack so much, she found it very easy to suddenly pack up & leave him. Also, the writer should have thought out a better way to communicate for Rachel - Katherine seemed very harsh & abrasive. I also found it hard to believe that Rachel was such a loner in the city, but quite the joiner since moving to Big Sur. Nothing really flowed together right to make the story believable.
If you don't have anything else to read, give it a try, but don't buy it.
Extraordinary!.......2005-11-23
Delinsky has a way of making normal/ordinary life occurances extraordinary! She has "painted" her characters so well that I could relate to them as if I had known them all my life. The issues the characters face are common. But their reactions are not! Emotional, passionate, and redemptive... a great read!
Slow and unbelievable.......2005-03-16
Although I don't read romance, I gave this a try at the advice of friends. While there is a plot with some merit, the characters are all caricatures - one person, one personality trait. One daughter is sweet; one is rebellious. Rachel is beautiful; Jack is selfish. Even the grandmothers are one-dimensional; one is a frump, one is a shallow socialite.
Their actions are not believable. Rachel couldn't find a single friend or anything to do in the city, but in the middle of nowhere she's the center of the whole community? She loved her husband so much but she couldn't even tell him about his own child? Jack is so clueless about teenagers that he couldn't see trouble in his daughter's plans to spend the night with a bunch of kids he didn't know? Katherine is so "open" that she needs to rudely lecture Jack the first ten times they meet? And he takes it - obviously feeling that he deserves this rude behavior? This is a male-bashing female fantasy in which the evil man needs to be redeemed by becoming, essentially, female. The fact that so many reviews are positive about this book makes me think that a lot of women think people should act this way, or do in real life. Come on, sisters! Men are different than women. Let's look for some more dimensional characters in our entertainment.
Hush Little Baby, Don't You Cry ... .......2005-03-11
COAST ROAD being the 6th novel I'd read of BD's work, I had begun to notice that her fiction creates a state of mind similar to what one of my readers (a US Marine) described about my work, "I was reading and reading, and all of a sudden I realized I had forgotten I was reading and felt I was just thinking my own thoughts."
Delinsky's fiction is so naturally and seamlessly real that I had, with COAST ROAD, decided to quit trying to pick out what works about her writing techniques, and to allow myself to just "be there," ironically slipping into a peaceful dream-like luxury similar to that of resting in a coma along with Rachael, receiving rather than responding, while her family and friends shower her with the balming presence of every variety of perfect love.
Almost as cathartic as the regeneration of the soul-link between Jack and Rachael was the beautiful, believable transformation of 15-year-old Samantha from a highly annoying super brat into a sensitive, appealingly gutsy young woman. What I admire most about this novel, though, is that it is told from a man's point-of-view, exposing simply and gently how tremendous emotional growth could occur in even the most Macho Male.
Even shored up by 5 previous Delinsky novels, I was concerned that a story about a woman in a coma would have to be sad and depressing, possibly even boring at times. This book was anything but. Sensitive, yes, sad but redeeming, and intensely engrossing in a way of deep, pensive satisfaction. It's another landmark winner of a book.
Trying to See it From another Prespective...........2004-07-15
In this story, Jack McGill, who has choosen his career over his family numerous times gets a wake up call when he discovers that his ex-wife Rachel is in a coma after a car accident. Jack never stopped loving Rachel, and for the first time in his life he puts his career on hold and goes to Rachels bedside, and to his two daughters. He discovers both his daughter and his wife are not the people he always thought them to be and that he somehow "missed the forest for the trees". With verbal abuse as well as a lot of guidance from Rachel's new friends, and his own daughters, Jack begins to reevaluate his life.
Coast Road touches on many different topics, such as miscarriage, divorce, traveling husbands, breast cancer, as well as what it is like for those around a coma patient, but don't let that deter you. This is a well written rewarding read.

Book Description
Stanislav Libensky and Jaroslava Brychtova have spent almost fifty years refining the art of casting large sculptures made of delicately colored glass. Their achievements have won them a place among the leading artists working in their medium. The Inner Light gives special prominence to the most recent work of this celebrated team. Libensky and Brychtova have mastered the complex technical and aesthetic demands of glass, using the materialís unique properties to create works on a par with the best of modern sculpture. Their work uses changes in surface treatment, the dynamics of intersecting planes, and the presence of voids within the sculptures to control the way light is held, transmuted, and radiated in the presence of the observer.
Robert Kehlmann places their aesthetic in the context of the Czech intellectual and artistic climate that played an important formative role in their development, with particular attention to the influence of Czech cubism. His essay takes a close look at their latest body of work, which utilizes monumental forms to probe issues relating to life, death, and the afterlife.
Two interviews provide further insight into Libensky and Brychtovaís creative process. Kehlmannís conversation with art historian Jiri Setlik, a close friend of the artists, gives a personal perspective on their work. Setlik is vice-director of the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design, Prague, and has written extensively about Libensky and Brychtovaís work. A lively interview with the artists themselves provides yet a fuller sense of the collaborative process behind their luminous and mysterious sculptures.

The Pencil Box.......2007-02-14
I found this book to be very helpful. I am getting back into drawing after many years and the author provided many good points and great illustrations. The section on colored pencils was especially helpful. I bought the pencils listed in the exercises and did a few of the drawings. The suggestions for blending and shading were wonderful.

design basic for ALL fields of art.......2007-08-10
This book teaches a basic principle that all artists/teachers should use when thinking/teaching composition whether you are working two-dimensionally or three-dimensionally. Notan is a simple design principle that focuses on positive and negative space. It uses six different exercises that could be used or adapted at any age level and should be a must for the art curriculum. It also offers great historical references. It is one of the best art books you could buy for under $10.
Notan: The Dark-Light Principle Of Design.......2007-08-10
Gives a very good idea of the relationships of dark & light in design.
Took a class from Dorr many years ago. Glad to see her book back in print.
I bought this book for my Grand Daughter.
Clarifies the application of design principles: a valuable reference.: .......2006-04-18
After reading this book and doing some of the suggested exercises, I became more sensitive to negative space and related design principles and better able to apply them to my art.
Why I love Notan.......2000-08-05
The Book Notan is a stimulating journey in to the World of design.Every aspiring designer should own this book. The excercises are sure to help in the devolopment of an understanding of the importance of "negative" space and it's relationship with good design. I would recommend this book to ages 12 and up, for those with an eye for art, or who would like to devolop their eye. I find myself returning to this book on a regular basis to refresh my Vision and kick start my creativity. An Exceptional Book!!

Customer Reviews:
Incredibly Powerful Imagery.......2000-04-24
This book is amazing, full of essays and art work that detail the atrocious nature of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. For those people who have read about the genocide but have not been able to relate emotionally, this is the book that will open your eyes. It details the strength of the Rwandans, the torment they endured, and the lack of response from the outside world. This book will touch you to the core, through pictures and through words. I definitely recommend it to anyone who has interest in the subject.
Book Description
Perhaps Nabokov prefigured Attracted to Light in his fictional four-volume set called, "The Butterflies and Moths of the Russian Empire" in "Father's Butterflies": "The illustrations are still more perfect texture, the blurry translucence of various families of moths are rendered so delicately you would be afraid to run your finger across the paper...." A sumptuously oversized and exquisitely produced book, Attracted to Light showcases the Starns' extensive conceptual portrait series of the nocturnal moths' mysterious journey and the seeming gravitational force that light has over them, "captured" in photographs and filmic video footage. "Light necessitates darkness, the shadow created by anything physical. But black is not only the lack of light. The void and reservoir of what we want, what we need; light is power, it is knowledge. When we look into the deep, velvety black eyes of moths we see both emptiness and (the absorption of) light. No one understands why moths are attracted to light. It's neither to mate nor to eat: many moths don't eat at all; some don't even have mouths. Like butterflies, moths are almost as light as air, but they're the poor stupid cousins. Choosing to live their lives at night, flying from nowhere towards the end of their lives orbit a lamp, fly into a flame, or self-immolate like a Buddhist monk."

Attracted to Light.......2006-03-11
I love this book. As a painter, I am inspired by Doug Starn's use of light in photographs of his subjects.
attracted to the light.......2005-01-27
The starn twins have always broadened the confines of the photographic world. A must have if you are interested in non-traditional photography. Graphic images of insects up close and made to look like the fragile beings that they are.
I loves me the Starn Twins.......2004-04-08
This book is great. I like the subject matter, the execution and, presentation. I won't go on and on, but these images of moths are both delicate and beautiful. Enjoy
