Well worth the money........2006-07-12
The techniques in this book are so painstakingly explained with text and photos that it's almost as if the authors are looking over your shoulder as you work. The reader will notice many extra tips and suggestions along the way in margins, charts, stylized boxes or picture captions. One feature called "Masterstroke" contains ideas for one a bit more advanced or ambitious.
Mastering Fine Decorative Paint Techniques might be a bit overwhelming for someone who's never tried any of the techniques. It's probably better suited for someone who's done some experimentation with these techniques previously. This is not a book for someone who just wants to sponge a jewelry box or closet wall. At the other end of the spectrum, even an advanced painter should find things of interest here to help him/her fine-tune some techniques.
great for all skill levels!.......2006-02-04
I bought this book as a just in case my other book didn't have all the information I needed but I ended up using this book as my main book to do my house. Great illustrations and explanations.
A Great Resource!.......2001-08-02
I bought this book in preparation for painting rooms in our first home. Having always rented, I didn't know what all was required in preparing your surface or how to choose the proper application tools. This book started from the beginning and included these topics. The examples throughout the book are marvelous and the directions for achieving such great effects, as stenciling, colorwashing, stippling, sponging, ragging, etc. are easy to understand. The instructions also include applying the these techniques to not only walls, but objects like picture frames, candlesticks and furniture if appropriate. A must have for anyone who is redocorating their home and wants to stretch their budget a little further by using paint techniques.
Great book for any skill level!.......2001-01-12
I am a professional faux finisher/muralist, and I really enjoyed this book. I have literally dozens of books on decorative painting techniques, and this is one of my favorites. It's like an encyclopedia- lots of different techniques explained very clearly, with good general info. If you're not sure what type of finish you're looking for, this would be a good book to invest in. Also has a good color reference for help on mixing your own paint colors. Another nice feature is that there are finishes in both water and oil based paints. Some Faux books only deal with oils, which i personally don't like to work with because of the smell and clean-up, etc... If you're looking for a more advanced book, I'd suggest "The Art of Faux" by Pierre Finkelstein.
An excellant start for a beginner or a expert..........2000-03-29
I am currently reading this book as I prepare to redecorate my home using painting techiques. This book is excellant in the volume of information it contains from a discussion of colors, paints, glazes, brushes, and tools to specific techniques such as sponging, ragging, stippling, color washing, etc. I found the contents to be very specific yet simple enough for a beginner like me. The best feature however is the variety of color pictures that accompany each topic. Once I have mastered the simpler techniques, this book will allow me to move on to the more advanced techniques which are also included. Happy painting!

Fun for all Ages.......2007-08-26
This book is another winner for Lin Wellford. I own all of her books and like her previous works she breaks rock painting, or in this case concrete painting, down into a step by step process. Truly anyone can paint with Lin's instructions. This book includes a few more complex projects so is not the one I would recommend for the first time painter, but on the other hand she has included patterns of the projects in the back of the book. This is also the book for those of you who do not have access to a rock pile. Just head down to your local home improvement store and for a few dollars pick up your "canvas".
Love this book.......2007-07-13
What a wonderful book! I bought a home last year from someone who planted nice flowers and bushes, but then edged them in ugly scalloped concrete borders with ugly concrete stepping stones nearby. I moved all of them to the shed & wondered what in the world I'd ever do with so much ugly concrete. Then I found this book. Never would it have occurred to me to paint my edgers & stepping stones the way Lin did. I'm no painter, but decided I had nothing to lose by trying. It worked! Lin's directions are very clear, easy to follow, and so much fun. I actually purchased an edger last week for yet another painting. Her stepping stones are also great. Plus, my sense of success caused me to purchase 2 of Lin's rock painting books, and they are also great. The water-based paint she recommends is formulated for concrete, stone, rocks, etc and saves steps because it has the primer & sealer built in.
Another plus: Lin's projects are very affordable. Among materials used to edge plantings, the concrete edgers shown in this book are the cheapest, slightly over $1 each at Lowe's, and the paint can be purchased at a crafts store in very small quantities for $2. Watch for Michael's 40% discount coupon (good for any item not on sale) every other Sunday in your newspaper. Hobby Lobby's 40% coupon is generally on alternating weeks. Both stores frequently run 50% off on paint brushes.
Plus another plus: Unlike so many craft books, Lin's are filled with clever, not cutesy, ideas. So much fun.
More ways for fun painting.......2007-06-13
This is the 4th of Lin Wellford's books that I have purchased. I use all of them on a regular basis because of the great tips she gives. The instruction steps are easy to follow. I especially like that she gives alternate materials to use, since I live in a rural area and don't have a craft shop easily available. With the tips in this book about presealing rocks with Kilz, I now can use some rocks for garden art that were not usuable for painting animals. My friends and customers appreciate the variety of ideas I have developed, thanks to the great foundation of illustrations and instructions from Lin's books that got me started on a craft business.
A very strongly recommended and thoroughly 'user friendly' instructional reference .......2007-05-13
Truly lovely gardens often require more than simply lovely plants. They also depend on the use of stepping stones, scalloped border pieces, manufactured field stones, natural river rocks, and other such raw materials to create maintenance-free borders, flower beds, and accent pieces. In "Painted Garden Art Anyone Can Do", gardening expert Lin Wellford presents eleven complete projects and patterns that even the most novice gardener can immediately apply to their own gardening and landscaping efforts. There are projects here that will help the gardener or landscaper to make the most out of limited space, compensate for not having time enough to keep annuals from looking their best, deal with otherwise doggedly shady areas and worn spots in the year, using relatively inexpensive and low-maintenance water features. A very strongly recommended and thoroughly 'user friendly' instructional reference for aspiring gardeners, Lin Wellford's "Painted Garden Art Anyone Can Do" is profusely illustrated with more than three hundred color photographs and a welcome addition to community library Gardening & Landscaping reference collections.

Something different.......2007-04-10
I enjoy using this book, it is well laid out with materials list for every project, it has easy to follow steps, very clear illustrations and lovely ideas.
Like most books there are some projects I don't particularly like - but other people may like them, even so these projects can lead to new ideas using different types of materials.
It also contains some challenging projects that in time - who knows I may take on
What I was looking for.......2007-01-22
I am a novice in stained glass...I know the fundamentals of cutting, soldering, finishing, etc.. What this book provides is some really cool extensions and applications of the basic skills. There are awesome designs that will be great in any garden either as a gift or, if you are an artist looking to produce pieces, works that will sell themselves.

A Real Gem.......2005-01-27
Nine-year-old Gregory's going through a tough time: his dad lost his job recently, he just moved to a new neighborhood, he switched schools, he didn't get to celebrate his birthday this year, and the one bright spot of everything -- the bedroom his parents added on to the house just for him (Gregory's never had his own room before) -- he has to share with his 20-year-old slacker Uncle Max, who just moved in. To make things worse, the kids at school aren't exactly standing in line to be his friends and his family doesn't have a lot of time for him now.
Things start to look up when Gregory discovers an abandoned chalk factory next door. Under the rubble are boxes and boxes of leftover chalk and Gregory starts drawing on the walls. What he draws and what happens when others take notice is the story.
Discussion:
This is one of the best beginning chapter books I've read in a long time. There are no 50 cent words and the sentences are short but the paragraphs pull you along so you'd never notice it. What makes this book so unique are the topics it skids around.
Gregory is a very frustrated little boy. His parents both work and can't afford to give him the art supplies, clothes, garden space, etc that his friends have access to. His uncle is more of a spoiled new brother than an adult and neither he nor Gregory's parents take much interest in Gregory's concerns and activities. His new teacher is nice but he's having trouble fitting in at school. There is no place in his house that is private. Nothing horrible ever happens but little things build up and although he doesn't know how to say it, Gregory's pent-up frustrations need an outlet. (He's not the only child in this book with this problem: a classmate, Ivy, also has difficulty putting words what's bothering her.)
In a typical beginner reader book an adult would take notice and step in and find a way to make Gregory feel special. Instead the author has Gregory discover an unlimited supply of chalk and 3 walls of the chalk factory to draw on. Now that Gregory has a place that he can make his own, everything else is more bearable. When he finds that he's the only one in his class without a yard to grow a garden in, he simply draws one on the walls outside.
It doesn't take long before others catch on to what he's doing, but by then Gregory has a little more control over his feelings (he no longer feels like kicking things). Again, Bulla is realistic: Nothing fantastic happens but things work out anyway and the ending is more satisfying because of it.
Book Description
Julie is a happy little girl who lives in Paris, but she wishes she could walk in a country garden. Julie is pleased when her mother decides to take her to visit the most wonderful garden in the world, owned by a great friend of the family. They arrive at their destination, and for this little girl it is like walking in a dreamy world where twisting plants grow as tall as trees. When Julie's dog runs away, she asks the gardener to help find her pet, and soon she and the gardener are friends. But this amiable, bearded old man is a very unusual gardener, for not only does he cultivate his many plants, he also paints beautiful pictures of them. Julie has made a friend of the great impressionist painter, Claude Monet. Based on a true story about the daughter of another fine artist, Berthe Morisot, this charmingly illustrated picture book includes reproductions by author-illustrator Laurance Anholt of a famous waterlilies painting, which Monet completed in his garden at Giverny, a few miles from Paris.
Customer Reviews:
Magical Garden inspired my students.......2006-08-12
Anholt's lovely book about Monet is my favorite of the series about famous artists. He demystifies impressionism and actually inspires children to paint their own "magical gardens"!!
Art Appreceation for children.......2005-11-11
Fine art apprecation was a lost thing among adults let alone children, encouraging an understanding of art at a young age will encorage intrest in art in children and their caregivers alike. Help kids enjoy art and culture while reading a fun story. With this book, (and the others in the series) they introduce kids to the famous artworks of great painters throughout history while encoraging a childs imagination to be creative and tell a story with each picture.
This story is even better because it is based on factual people, even the little girl. She embarks on a journey with her mother to visit a friend..the little girl ends up chasing her runaway dog on the trip and finds herself in a most magnificent garden..only to find out that is the "friend" they were going to visit. This book is wonderful, historical, educational, and fun. It encourages children to think about paintings, and to form images and stories for each one, to think about "what would it be like to be inside that painting".
Great for Toddlers.......2005-08-13
The Magical Garden of Claude Monet is a great way to expose young children to impressionist art. My son loved the story of Julie in Monet's garden. Julie is a young French girl who takes a train with her Mother to visit Monet's garden. As they arrive into the countryside, her dog runs away and is found in Monet's garden. Soon the painter and Julie become friends. The illustrations are bright and colorful. You almost feel as if you are inside one of Monet's paintings. Children will be captivated by the story as well as the beautiful pictures.
Breathtaking journey for children into Monet's paintings.......2004-10-16
I have long been a fan of Linnea in Monet's Garden - so I was very excited to find this new series of books by Laurence Anholt. Anholt's approach to introducing children to these artists - he has covered Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh, Degas, and DaVinci - is to use their art to create the backgrounds and settings for his characters. This book in particular is my favorite of the series because it is crowned with a fold out of Monet's vivid Waterlilies with a tiny boat floating across it carrying the story's members - Monet and a little girl who happens upon his garden. Before it is over, the little girl plucks one of the lilies from the famous painting as a memoir. My daughter loves this picture - and it is almost surreal to me to see Monet's art coming to life in such a manner. I can hardly wait until she visits the museum and sees the real painting. Watching her make this connection should be very exciting.
Aside from this stunning mixture of Monet's work and Anholt's own lush artwork - carefully drawn to compliment the featured art - the book gives some great educational information about Monet by weaving it into the story - all this without ever starting to sound like a textbook. The story retains its' focus and its' charm without becoming boring. That is an amazing accomplishment in my opinion.
I hope to purchase the entire set for a lovely and educational Christmas gift. These are sure to become beloved classics. Any children's book that learns to entertain both child and parent equally often does.

Great Book.......2007-02-19
Certainly a great book. Well designed. I am a hobby painter. Self taught and this book has certainly inspired me into painting some of the pictures in the book. If you love nature and painting this is simple step by step book has a wealth of information. Would certainly recommend it.
Painting Garden Birds with Sherry Nelson.......2006-08-10
The author provides step by step instructions and photos for painting a variety of birds with oils. This is a great book for the beginner decorative oil painter.
Painting Garden Birds with Sherry C. Nelson.......2005-08-25
I've enjoyed having this book as a reference. The step by step instructions work just as well with other mediums instead of the recommended oils, so far I've painted the Wren in watercolors and the Cardinals in Acrylics.
would give this 6 stars if I could!.......2005-04-25
This is an absolutely wonderful book that any beginning artist must have. Ms. Nelson's instructions are so clear and easy to follow that anyone can produce beautiful paintings. Not only does Ms. Nelson tell you what colors to use, but what direction to make your painting strokes, how to hold the brush, what brushes to use..how much easier can you get?! I am currently working on my first bird from the book. My family can't get over how life-like my painting is. I am even surprised at the results! I am definately going to purchase more of her books and I have no doubts that eventually I'll be able to do paintings on my own once I've mastered the techniques in the book.
Great for Beginners.......2003-01-08
For new enthusiasts, this book is a must get for painting realistic birds of many varieties. The instructions are easy to follow and the illustrations are top notch. The author even gives the exact colors that are used in each painting.

Book Description
Best-selling author Claudia Nice provides all the information artists need to create gorgeous country garden art. She reviews basic watercolor techniques, including glazing and texturing, along with basic pen and ink techniques for producing a variety of line textures.
Readers will find valuable step-by-step demonstrations utilizing a variety of media. They'll begin by drawing in pencil, then add watercolor and/or pen and ink. In addition to flowers, Claudia shows how to illustrate a variety of leaves, vines, moss, ferns and other country scene details, including rabbits, dogs, statues, birdbaths, wagon wheels, weathered wood arbors, fences and more.
Customer Reviews:
Pen and ink painting.......2007-08-23
I love pen and ink painting as it looks delicate. It takes the same amount of time to do as an oil painting but has a different look. This book gives me more choices to pick from and adds more depth with the texture lessons.
Watercolor .......2006-08-24
Claudia Nice not only tells you how to use watercolor, but what colors she uses in the examples.
Country Gardens in Watercolor,Pen & Ink........2006-07-05
I find that this book explains procedures excellently and items are illustrated with good follow through steps making it very easy to follow. I have learnt some real shortcuts to problem areas I had.
The most recent in my collection!.......2003-05-12
I admit it: I am hooked on books by Claudia Nice. Pen & ink can be quite an intense media. Claudia Nice simplifies the techniques and conveys the instruction as only as master can, and does it in her trademark informal, friendly manner. Another aspect I love is her use of watercolor to bring her works to life. The reader gets the treat of two complimentary media in one book: pen & ink and watercolor.
For the beginner, I might recommend starting with her other books before attempting the more advanced exercises and techniques in Painting Country Gardens. The perfect introduction is Sketching Your Favorite Subjects in Pen & Ink, followed by Painting with Watercolor, Pen & Ink, and then perhaps Creating Textures in Pen & Ink with Watercolor.
There are more technical books on pen & ink technique for advanced students, some intimidatingly so; but for the beginning to intermediate artist, no series of books is as valuable for developing sound technique. And certainly no other books are as intimate, casual, and just plain fun as those by Claudia Nice.
Gorgeous, beautiful!!.......2002-09-22
This book is beautiful and gorgeous! If you enjoy nature and taking field trips to pretty gardens, fields or just plain nature, you'll love this book! It has gushing pictures just delicately drawn. You'll fantasize this book your own personal treasure.
