Customer Reviews:
Wondering which breeds are in here?.......2007-06-27
I bought this book hoping there would be a picture of a weim or a similar breed. I got lucky, there is a weim! It does look incredibly easy to follow, but I know what dog lovers want to know: is MY breed in there? so here's a list:
The book is divided into "groups". The Hound group has Afghan, Basenji (sitting), Basset, Beagle, Black & Tan, Bloodhound (sitting), Borzoi, Dachshund (smooth), Greyhound (running), Irish Wolfhound (running). The Terrier group has Airedale, Bedlington, Bull Terrier, Cairn, Dandie Dinmont, Wire Fox, Kerry Blue, Scottish, Sealyham & a Westie (sitting). The Working group is actually the CKC working & herding combined, and has Malamute, Boxer (running), Rough Collie (running), Doberman (play bow), GSD (head shot), Great Dane, Mastiff, OES, Corgi (Pembroke), St. Bernard (lying down), Samoyed, Sheltie, Standard Schnauzer. The Sporting has Cocker (looks like American, is "sitting pretty"), English Setter (head shot), Golden Retriever, Irish Setter, Pointer, Weim. The Irish, Pointer & Weim are on point. The Non-sporting includes the Toy breeds: Bichon, Boster Terrier, Bulldog, Chow, Dalmatian (sitting), Lhasa Apso, Standard Poodle (continental cut I think), Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Pug, Yorkie. All the breeds which can have cropped or natural ears have cropped ears in these drawings.
Dog Lines .......2007-04-08
This was the ideal book for me! Thanks to this book, I can draw better than I ever imagined possible!
Ames' provides good, clear instructions. Beagles, basenjis, bulldogs and Germans shepherds are fun to draw. Any dog with a curly tail is fun to draw. Readers are also treated to a brief history of each breed on the bottom of each page.
Now, I wish there was a book (or maybe there is and I just don't know about them) of drawing classic cars. How to draw a 1964 Ford Falcon - how cool is that!
"Draw 50 Dogs" of the terrific Draw 50 series.......2002-10-13
I must admit that for me it takes a bit of work to draw realistic and 3 dimensional pictures. But using the 'Draw 50' books are so very, very easy to use! Lee J. Ames's drawing method is simple with the step-by-step instructions which are easy to follow. For kids 9 and older, "Draw 50 Dogs" by Lee J. Ames is great for drawing in your scrapbook, onto your notebooks, on cards, etc.
As the title says, this book includes instructions to draw 50 dogs; all of the 50 are different breeds and types. For me I love the portraits though I also love to draw dogs running or posing. My favorite pictures to draw are most probably the 'Irish Wolfhound', 'Cairn Terrier', 'German Shepherd Dog', 'Cocker Spaniel', and 'English Setter'. The book has another nice touch which is at the bottom of each drawing, there is some information on that dog including a brief history of the breed, average weight and height of the dog, and coat and color of the dog. Extremely helpful especially if you are thinking of coloring your drawing afterwards or would like to know how big to draw the dog when putting it in a background. My only complaint that there isn't a picture of a papillon to draw which I would like to (the reason? I have a papillon for a pet!).
Of course all of the "Draw 50" series are great, be sure to check them all out! The books I want are "Draw 50 Athletes", "Draw 50 Cats", "Draw 50 Cars, Trucks, and Motorcycles", and "Draw 50 Famous Faces".
Great book.......2000-12-27
I agree with the other reviews, this is a great book in the series. If you have an interest in drawing or know someone who does, you'll find these books to be very useful. My daughter had brought some home from the library & asked for me to buy them. They go step by step with you,in no time you'll have a wonderful picture!
Draw 50 dogs.......2000-09-08
This wonderful step-by-step drawing book has great illustrations like the Yorkshire terrier(My favourite). Lee J. Ames, author, is very kind as I had e-mailed him many times. Hope you like this book too...

Keith Haring: I Wish I Didn't Have to Sleep! (Adventures in Art Series)
ASIN: 0821226754 |
Book Description
The radiant baby and the barking dog were recurring themes in the art of Keith Haring. He drew both motifs in many incarnations. Pregnant women dance giddily; babies, radiant with halo and wings, are perched on their dads shoulders or cradled in their mothers arms. His dogs were distinctly anthropomorphic: dancing, laughing, ogling, and showing off they were on occasion an alter-ego of sorts. Both themes provide a touching and funny counterpoint to Harings more monumental work. Here, the drawings are matched with insightful entries from his writings, which reveal his thoughts on life, children, and friendship. Harings work resonated with people of all ages. His popular creations are used on everything from t-shirts to animations, as well as in his still-thriving New York City Pop Shop. These collections bring together Harings ever-popular drawings on two universally appealing subjects.

Book Description
Dogs have frequently been the subject of paintings but rarely have they created them. Brooklyn-born Tillie is the exception. This acclaimed pooch had her first solo exhibition at a mere nine months old. Utilizing a unique color transfer technique, Tillie holds a prepared “canvas” in her mouth and trots it off to her workspace, where she dramatically applies pressure with teeth and claws in a feverish ritual of creation. The results garner high prices, slack-jawed praise, and comparisons with Jackson Pollack. Portrait of the Dog as a Young Artist profiles this pioneering talent with photographs and descriptive text by her “assistant,” F. Bowman Hastie III. Hastie recounts Tillie’s early life in Brooklyn and details her evolution from promising amateur to canine Caravaggio. The photographs portray Tillie at work, at her many gallery shows, and taking a much-needed break to play with her six new puppies.
Customer Reviews:
Tillie rocks!.......2006-12-02
Just saw Tillie in action on Conan O'Brien last night, and it is really amazing what a true artist this little pup has become. The story of her life and work in Portrait of the Dog as a Young Artist should serve as inspiration to dogs (and cats) everywhere that they, too, can find fulfillment in art and create work that can stand alongside such modern masters as Pollack and De Kooning. A true collectible for dog lovers and art fans!!!

Helpful and simple.......2004-04-02
I found this book quite easy to follow. Even though I bought this for my daughter I too enjoyed trying to draw the Labradors. It also provides children with background information on the dog that they are drawing.

There's a Big, Beautiful World Out There!
ASIN: 0761452176 |
Book Description
Words first! That's the way Jenny's teacher says a story must begin. But Jenny loves to draw, not to write. Besides, how can she possibly concentrate on a story when her pet guinea pig, Patches, has disappeared? How Jenny finally finds her pet and the words to her story makes for a winning tale about the creative spirit.
Customer Reviews:
Patches.......2006-11-07
I used this book to introduce writer's workshop and help my students see that they can write about anything!
Excellent for use in the classroom/LMC.......2005-07-07
Patches Lost and Found tells the story of Jenny and her pet guinea pig, Patches. Jenny, who loves to draw, is assigned to write a story for school. She's nervous about the assignment because she isn't very good at coming up with ideas for stories. When she gets home from school that day, her mother tells her that Patches has escaped from his cage and is missing. They put up posters around town and Jenny draws pictures showing all the things that might have happened to Patches. Luckily, a neighbor finds Patches, but Jenny still hasn't written her story. Later that day her Mom comes into her room and shows her that she can add words to her pictures of Patches to tell a story.
I would recommend this book for ages 6 and 7. Most children in this age group will be able to identify with being nervous about an assignment for school, and they will be reassured that Jenny was able to overcome her difficulties and succeed in writing the story. There are a variety of ways this book could be shared with children in a school setting. It could be read as part of a section on writing stories, with the children later drawing pictures and then writing stories to go along with them. These stories could possibly be the children's own ideas about what could have happened to Patches. Another idea would be to teach the children about guinea pigs, possibly having a real guinea pig in the classroom, and then follow the lesson with this story. The artwork in the book was prepared digitally. Jenny looks like she could be a character in a cartoon on Nickelodeon. Children would find this very appealing. Kids would also enjoy the pictures Jenny draws of Patches because they probably look similar to pictures they would draw themselves. The artwork does a good job of telling the story, showing each picture Jenny draws along the way and then displaying Jenny's story about Patches with the pictures.
Patches Lost and Found.......2003-03-17
When Jenny is assigned to write a stroy for school on anything she wants, she doesn't know what to do. Jenny likes to draw, and writing has never been easy for her. When Jenny comes home from school, and her mom tells her Patches is missing, Jenny draws pictures of Patches, and they hung then up all over town. When Jenny is in her room, she draws things that might have happened to Patches. Three days later and still no Patches, and Jenny still has no story.
On Saturday morning Patches is found, but Jenny still has no story. Jenny's mom goes in her room that night while Jenny is cuddling with Patches. Jenny tell her mom she still has no story. Jenny's mom looks on the wall and see's all the pictures she tells Jenny that can be her story all she has to do is add words. So Jenny does and she does a very good job. I would recommend this book for children ages 4-9.
Super Book for Teachers!!!!!!.......2001-11-21
This is the perfect book for a teacher to use in the classroom. It helps children understand that when they have to write something, they don't always have to write then draw a picture to go with it, they might do better drawing first then putting words to it later!! The story is realistic and very fun to read with great illustrations!!!!!!!
An engaging picturebook with a unique illustration style.......2001-08-17
Steven Kroll's Patches Lost And Found is an engaging picturebook with a unique illustration style - the art is drawn in such a way as if to resemble expert paper collages. Iconic characters and brilliant colors make the images practically leap off the page, adding the perfect mood to the tender story of a young girl's search for her lost pet guinea pig.

Fun stuff.......2005-08-28
This is appropriate for any age. This is another item from the cool "klutz" company that makes neat educational toys that are portable enough to go anywhere in a pocket. This helps you to improve your doodles, or scribble art, into better art. The little book is spiral bound like a note pad and has a pencil and a 35 foot roll of paper to draw on. Great stocking stuffer. I also reccommend Ed Emberly's "Make a World", and "Big Green Drawing Book".
Carolyn's Mom.......2004-11-20
My 5 year old has developed a sudden interst in Art and Drawing and she loves this book. Some of the drawings are just at her level and the more difficult ones are still fun for her to try without getting too frustrated. It has really boosted her confidence in drawing. She loves dogs and puppies too and these drawings are really cute.
