Customer Reviews:
Outstanding book.......2007-06-05
It's really hard to say too many things about this book. Even older editions of Color Drawing are great, but this newest one goes above and beyond the call of duty. In an age when a lot of books get re-released as new editions with few substantive changes, Color Drawing breaks the mold by updating the techniques with current technology (i.e. Photoshop). It's great to see that the author and publisher realize that pure hand-drawing and rendering is quickly becoming a thing of the past and that the practitioners of today and tomorrow need to have excellent computer skills too. This book is full of very useful tips for combining Photoshop with hand drawings to create great effects. So even if you have an earlier edition, do yourself a favor and buy the new one anyway because you will learn a lot.
Color Drawing: Design Drawing Skills and Techniques for Architects, Landscape Architects, and Interior Designers, 2nd Edition.......2007-01-06
This is an excellent resouce for the study of rendering. After detailing the elements of color and design, it describes, step-by-step, how to achieve many finishes both interior and exterior. It is both instructive and informative.
Outstanding Resource.......2007-01-03
This is the standard for rendering in architecture and interior design as far as I am concerned. It will most definitely become a required textbook for my classes in visual presentation in the years to come. Doyle takes you step-by-step into the process of rendering with marker, color pencil, and pastels. But he doesn't just spoon feed you the recipe for each material rendering, he presents the basis for a process that allows you to render virtually any material not found in the book.
EXCELLENT rendering help.......2006-02-25
My rendering skills have improved HUGELY scince recieving this book. It helps with marker, colored pencils, pastels, how to treat light, etc. My renderings look amazing and it is a great reference for when I'm not sure how to treat a surface/object. I would absolutely recommend this book.
Color Drawing Book.......2005-09-26
I needed this book expedited and it got to me even before the dates listed on my confirming email. Very pleased.

Landscape Graphics.......2007-09-24
For beginning drawers in the landscape architecture field, this is a great reference book. Lots of graphics from which one can begin. It's hard to beat the price too.
I used this for class..........2007-08-16
...and quite frankly it's unbelievably dry and boring. the material looks like it should be useful, and i should be interested in reading it, but the monochromatic look of the book's contents are a direct contrast to the exciting, varied and colorful world of landscape design. i'm sure it wasn't a conscious effort on the part of the author to suck all of the life out of landscape design, but it sure feels like it.
PS- the graphics do indeed look dated. i looked for and illustration credit by Mike Brady, and was surprised to not find it.
A great book overall.......2007-02-19
I am taking a class in Graphics for Designers and this book is a great benefit to have around. They have great pictures, great examples, and displayes of a wide varity of graphics to adapt into projects and to make your own. Very preofessional instructions, even though they do go a bit too in depth at times. Really great book and I recommend it to anyone interested in becoming a Landscape Architect or starting to do some landscape design.
Very good resource.......2007-02-11
As others have said, this is a great reference book for landscape graphics. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it's entirely black and white and offers no guidance on color rendering, which is a vital part of the design process.
Great book for students, easy to understand and use.......2006-11-11
I bought this book as a required text for a college class. The book is full of great examples of graphics for use in landscape designs. Very basic, easy to understand, and well organized. Recommended for architecture and landscape architecture students or those interested in drawing landscapes.

Good old fashion advice .......2007-09-03
Hamm's Drawing Scenery book was published in 1972, yet it is still full of useful advice to the artist today. As an author, he makes no assumptions about the reader's drawing skills, and gets right down to basics. This book is broad enough to be written for the general artist, whether you are an illustrator, commercial artist, or fine artists. While it has a slight comic book artist feel about it, the tips and advice are not limited to just comic book art. I've only taken one star off for its unusual layout - but then it was written BC (before computers).
Classic good instruction.......2007-08-22
Hamm's How To books are really good. They dissect the shapes of things and show clear ways to draw them.
Wonderful!.......2007-08-15
I have loved Jack Hamm's books for years! As an artist, I am constantly looking for new books to try to hone my skills with. And while Jack Hamm's books aren't new, they have been a pivotal part of my self teaching in my skills. I have checked the books out of the library for years, and I would keep them until I HAD to take them back! (Darn!) So, I finally decided that it was time to buy a copy of "Drawing Scenery" for myself! I love it, and I will use it frequently! I love his style of teaching, he breaks it down for you in simple terms and shows you how it CAN be acomplished. I love this book!

Content-packed bargain!.......2005-09-17
Jack Hamm's three books "Drawing the Head and Figure," "How to Draw Animals," and this volume together form what I consider a complete course in commercial illustration but for color theory, which you can find in many other art books. Drawing well is the basis for every other art form especially in illustration.
This is the most difficult of those three volumes. Prepare to spend some time reading and studying it. I felt like I was back in college, and progressed through it one page at a time doing sketches on index cards with a soft pencil to test the ideas and theories he put forward -- and unlike many other art books I've read or classes I've taken, concepts like composition, balance, light and perspective made sense to me after studying this book. It's not a light read but it's so rich.
Jack Hamm's style is engaging but it's very content-dense. His books are the peak of the example-heavy content-rich concise style of art instruction. Step by step projects and long personal essays on technique and feeling aren't what Jack Hamm is about, although his style is engaging he doesn't seem to have the ego that many art instruction writers do. He doesn't claim his methods or compositions or styles are the best. He describes as many different ways to do things as they are and constantly encourages imagination, originality and personal style.
He distinguishes realism from artistic exaggeration and explains effectively why you can't just rely on a photo or even on what you see to create a good believable picture. I'm a writer who has spent a lifetime trying to learn self-illustration and his explanations have successfully broken some mental barriers like overdetailing, lack of focus, bad composition, inconsistent lighting. He encourages boldness and daring.
He has specific examples and details of everything I'd need to use in a scene, from clouds and waves to rocks and trees and houses. Most of all he shows how to create drama within a scene, no matter what the subject is it can be rendered a little bolder than life, it can convey emotion and tell a story.
I'd recommend this without reservation, order all three of them if you don't have them. All of these books have one quality in common. Even after they're read, they are great permanent references with examples of trees, waves, houses, styles of clouds -- the cloud chart pages are great -- so if I'm doing a drawing I can flip to the right section and get ideas for how to handle the sky or what I can do to make the gnarled tree look like endurance.
These books are the kind that will wear out from constant use and need replacing if you're at all fond of drawing, because there's always something new and interesting to find for any future artwork. This is why these classics are still in print. Check out the other two and consider his cartooning book as well if you have any interest in cartooning.
Brilliant.......2004-07-15
I couldn't agree more with Mari Lamar's comments. Absolutely a must have for any art student.

Must have book for all artist.......2007-08-05
I love the more detailed drawings seen in this book. Alot of pencil drawing technique books look dark and smudged. Phil Metzger has used a wonderful talent to help others. I generally try to be more photorealistic in the pictures I draw in pencil or pen and ink and this book was one of the most helpful I have found. Buy it Buy it Buy it if you really enjoy drawing and want others to see what you were looking at when you drew it.
Get this one!.......2007-05-17
If your new to pencil drawing, you will learn more in the first 20 pages of this book than you will from most other books cover to cover.
Great stuff.......2007-02-06
It describes how to interpret nature and useful techniques at drafting what you see. I got a lot out of this book. The artwork is fabulous. This book is a great starting point for an adventure in nature and landscape.
Love, Love, Love.......2006-04-21
This was to be my next purchase from amazon, however, a one night out with my husband he decides to go to or local bookstore and as impaient as I was I decided to get it then. Believe me, that was a mistake, I have gotten 2 books from amazon for what I paid at Books a Million for this one. However, I was just proud to have it. This book has really helped me discover new and amazing techniques. BUY IT, you wont be dissapointed.
GET THIS BOOK!.......2004-05-20
I highly recommend this book. I first read "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and this book is a great follow up to it for anyone who thinks they cannot draw! I could hardly draw legible stick figures and now carry a sketch book with me wherever I go. Mr. Metzger has a way of writing that seems to speak to you at whatever level you are at in drawing. His examples are excellant. Tips abound. GET THIS BOOK!
Book Description
Wolf Kahn is one of this country's best-loved contemporary artists. His brilliantly colored landscapes in oil have placed him at the forefront of American representational art. Many collectors equally prize his luminous pastels, the subject of this delightful new book.
With more than 100 colorplates illustrating his brief, breezy essays, Kahn reveals his distinctive approach to working in this medium. Offering a rare glimpse into the way an artist thinks and why he works the way he does, Kahn's musings about the creative process bring a number of key issues to life for artists, students, and art lovers, and make the book a valuable supplementary text for pastel classes. Including an introduction by noted art historian Barbara Novak, this book will be eagerly received by Kahn's devoted following.
WOLF KAHN, noted artist and teacher, has exhibited his work throughout the United States and abroad. He has taught at Cooper Union and at the National Academy of Design in New York; has been a guest lecturer at various art schools; and has written articles for such publications as Art in America and the Art Journal. He lives in New York City.
BARBARA NOVAK has published numerous books and articles on American art and art history. She is Altschul Professor of Art History Emerita at Barnard College and Columbia University, both in New York City.
100 illustrations in full color, 101/4 x 93/4"

If you are a beginner or a experienced artist, you will greatly appreciate wolf kahn. His book is inspiring as all of his works. I would highly recommend this book.
Wolf Kahn Pastels.......2006-11-04
If you are a fan of Wolf Khan, this is a must-have. Great book.
Now This is Inspiring Art.......2004-04-09
Very beautiful work. I love Kahn's minimalist approach, he is an exceptional colorist. I could look at this man's art all day long and not get bored.
Wolf Kahn Pastels Color Feast.......2003-11-13
Why does an artist do what (s)he does? Wolf Kahn gives insight into his thinking. He touches on composition, use of color, and elements of design. We know the colors, but we might not understand why they work. He helps us understand. Just out of curiosity I viewed the plates upsidedown, and they were very exciting viewed that way. Try it! The book has beautifully printed plates, but I found placement of some plates to the text somewhat inconvenient and perhaps a little confusing at times interrupting the continuity of reading and study. I would have wished for some of the smaller paintings to have been actual size. I would have learned and understood more. You may learn some new vocabulary and some words he has defined for his own usefulness. The cover and binding are confluent to the interior of the book. I consider this book to have worthwhile the purchase and the time spent reading it. What are my credentials you might ask? I am nearing graduation in master of arts in studio painting and have degrees in journalism and education.
Beautiful, Colorful Pastels.......2003-06-23
From the first time I saw Wolf Kahn's work, I knew I wanted this book. It is filled with his beautiful pastels and it is a very interesting read about how he came to create them.
Book Description

This new edition addresses changes in media and expression that have deeply affected the landscape architecture discipline.
Customer Reviews:
.......2006-11-10
This book serves as a comprehensive reference for ways of thinking about drawing, applications of different media, the creative environment, drawing exercises, creating textures, shadows, and trees, composing the drawing, perspective drawing, plan, elevation, section, axonometric and isometric drawing, drawing the figure, and layout.
Using as Text.......2006-11-04
Wonderful book! We're currently using it in our beginning studio class. Sullivan has a wonderful sense of humor, good skill building exercises and really good graphics. Highly recommend it for anyone wanting how to draw the landscape.
Not that great.......2003-07-06
i was looking for a book on this subject, the writer the publisher, it all looked perfect. but the book is soooo boring, after reaching a long way into the book you waste your time on artists rooms and clubs!! really! then when we finally start, it is like for ever, the process seems so slow... the book ofcourse is full of the writers own sketches which might not appeal to every one. what you might find here, at this price, you'll find for sure in more cheaper and more focused more useful books. i wouldn't recommend it personally.
The Essential Tutorial for Improving Your Renderings.......2000-08-13
Chip Sulivan's step by step instruction guides the reader to see the underlying structure in each of his renderings. This insight reviels an efficient method of organizing profesional quality landscape plans. His more informal sketchs show how to quickly get a feel for site illustration.
As a landscape design professional, I recomend this book to my peers and to those new to rendering the landscape. I am confident that after studying this text, anyone would be able to better comunicate their designs.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect manual.......2005-11-08
The author brings the skill and wisdom of 50 years of teaching to bear on his subject. This is very detailed, and richly illustrated. The publisher has given it very generous packaging and binding.
An excellent purchase.
I recommend Maltzman's other book as well.
As close to a class as you can get!.......2000-04-03
This book gives the artist a special perspective from which to view and draw nature. Stanley Maltzman focuses on the basics of different seasons, weather, water, rocks, etc., but also takes the reader into specific shapes and characteristics of individual elements. For example, he shows you the differences between drawing an oak and a maple tree. This is the strength of the book over other landscape drawing books.
There are demonstrations and samples on almost every page in a variety of mediums. He even shows the student how to mock up a natural setting in the studio for practice. Having taken a class from this author, I can easily say it is like having him explain the material in person!
Book Description
Hundreds of plant species — from lilies, lichens, and palms to mushrooms, mosses, and maples — supplemented by appendices on edible plants, medicinal herbs, and plants used in decoration and in graphic design. Indispensable source of inspiration and royalty-free graphics for designers and artists; a captivating compendium for botanists, gardeners, and collectors of old engravings.

Great Book!.......2006-03-13
This is a terrific book. I purchased it with the companion book on Animals. It is a "must have" for anyone interested in art, biology, or just a good coffee table book. It will keep youngsters quiet for hours with the facinating illustrations. Very high quality. You just can't beat the price either. I highly recommend it. You, too, can be botanically correct!

Even though I've caught onto the basic skills over time, this book is a great reference and I'm still finding new things. This book is very easy to follow and a has a few pages of colored pages so that you can see his marker and colored pencil examples. I would most definitely recommend this book!!
