Welcome foolish mortaals, to the haunted mansion!.......2007-08-17
THis book was great! A ton of information on the ride! I couldnt put it down! It was great.
A SPIRITED TRIBUTE TO A DISNEY CLASSIC.......2006-07-18
This book is a must read for ALL ages and ANYONE interested in Disney theme park attractions around the globe. Any Disney fan knows that the Imagineers are very particular about what is revealed to the general public in terms of how they make their Disney 'magic' and I was pleasantly surprised (being an avid Disney fan myself) by the research that went into the making of this book and the amount of knowledge shared with the reader - it DOES in fact reveal some secrets of the mansion and never before seen history of the making of the attraction. (It confirms and dispels some rumors about the attraction once and for all too!) A pattern of discussion is followed throughout the book as you are verbally walked through the mansion's corridors and rooms. Surrell consistently covers the Haunted Mansion in a logical order (Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris) in every chapter. He takes the subject matter full circle by including information about how the attraction was translated to the big screen, and gives the reader insight to how decisions were made pertaining to set design, costume design, and casting for the movie of the same name. If you want an intelligent, thorough and enjoyable read about a classic Disney attraction, and especially an insight to the magic that is Imagineering, this is a MUST READ!
Weak information...a promo for the ride and the movie.......2006-07-10
You buy this book thinking it's a great "behind-the-scenes" resource, but it's not. Yes, there is some background information, but the book skips confusingly from park to park, and offers very little technical information on the special effects. The photos are all standard Disney promotional stuff...this book tells you what Disney wants you to know, and nothing else.
Go to doombuggies.com for a much better treatment of this classic ride.
This reader says "hurry ba-ack, hurry ba-ack".......2006-07-03
Lots o' great info on both the Ride @ the Disney Theme Parks + the Movie [which I loath - sorry but the Haunted Mansion wasn't meant to be made into a 2 hour episode of the Fresh Prince of Bellaire, mmmkay ?] + the Haunted Mansion Holiday ....
Future editions should drop all reference to the Movie, then spend more time on the Haunted Mansion Holiday [Nightmare Before Christmas Holiday makeover] + recent "changes" that occured in 2006 [I'd make it a 5 star if they did that] ....
If you don't want to read the book, please buy it for the artwork
[best priced Disney Merchandise vs. what you will pay @ the Theme Parks] ....
~(^)~
Great read!.......2006-06-18
I picked this book up at Disneyland and it's fantastic! I only wish I'd have read it before going on the ride, there's so many little details I didn't know to look for.
If you're a fan of the attraction, you'll love this book!

Not very pretty .......2007-09-25
I am not a picky person,I like lots of bags in all sizes and colors but this book is just terrible! The bags are not pretty at all!I can't even comment on the directions because there wasn't a singe purse in this book that interested me enough to even read the directions. This is one of those books that will sit on my shelf until I do a clean out and then it will be gone.
Another Great Find.......2005-08-15
This book was another good find if you're into making purses for yourself or family, or just like making purses. More great designs and patterns to chose from. Very well done and explained.
Dont bother to order!.......2005-03-15
This book is not that great. It is the same purse pattern (fold over flap sack type bag) just has differant designs. Many are for people that crochet... I dont!! And it doesnt' even show how to crochet. What a waste of money... I sent it back!! I did read all the reviews and orederd it any way. Take heed... don't buy it!!
Sewing Terific Totes & Carryalls is better........2003-03-06
These are a bit, um, avant garde for my taste.
Buy only if you like ugly.......2003-01-29
I didn't look into this purchase enough and if I was smart I would have returned it. I HATED IT! It is out of date and most of the bags looks like something that only a butch lesbian would carry arround. Nothing pretty or fashionable.
Think twice before going for this one. They did a great job at marketing, however the product stinks.

soft focus.......2001-05-27
The original focus of this book was said to be art selected from the annual Arts for the Parks contest in Jackson, Wyoming, but that idea got lost somewhere since some paintings are not from national parks and paintings from parks have no notation to tell you which park is depicted. I have been following the Arts for the Parks for a couple of years and I find some of the omissions pretty glaring. Why do we get six paintings by Jim McVicker and not one by Ronnie Barnes? Three David Tutwilers and no Shirley Cleary. Three Dempwolfs and no Lanford Munroe. There are many beautiful paintings in the book and the artists comments are interesting and informative. The picture cropping at times is brutish and the desciption of one painting is obviously of another.A good book in spite of the editing.31/2 stars for the art and 1/2 a star for the publisher.
Tantilize your eyes with this beautiful book........2001-01-11
What a beautiful collection of art work form the years of the Art of the Parks contests. No matter what style the paintings are, the compositions are outstanding. Nice picture reproduction with a short relevant text with each entry.
Book Description
Set in 1964, Barefoot in the Park follows the lives of newlyweds Paul and Connie Bratter as they adjust to married life in a tiny Greenwich Village apartment. Paul is a lawyer who's wound up a little too tight, while Connie is a free spirit bubbling over with romantic notions. In typical Simon style, all manner of comic chaos ensues as the Bratters' marriage begins to collapse under the pressure of a five-flight walk-up, a skylight that leaks snow, an eccentric neighbor who must climb through their apartment to get to his, and Connie's misguided attempt to marry off her mother. Acclaimed playwright, Neil Simon, is a Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning author. Neil Simon's comedy Barefoot in the Park is 30-something now, but its newlywed protagonists, the Bratters, remain forever young. The Dallas Morning News

Adorably Entertaining Play.......2003-06-05
I first heard of this play from my good friend, who happened to see it performed in Central Park. I later saw this old copy of the play laying around my high school stage office, and picked it up, remembering my friends mention of it... upon finishing the play (within two days, I could NOT put it down) I realized I have NEVER laughed so hard outloud while reading any sort of literature.. it is witty, comical, and softly but lovingly expressing the hardships of the first days of marriage and living together with your beloved. I highly highly highly recommend picking this up for a mood-lifter, or just a good laugh. It is light and entertaining and very cute!
The adventures and foibles in beginning married life.......2002-07-12
Barefoot In The Park is the complete and unabridged ninety minute audiobook presentation of a classic Neil Simon romantic comedy. Wonderfully performed by Laura Linney and Eric Stoltz, Barefoot In The Park is the flawlessly recorded production that tells the story of a new lawyer and his young bride, the adventures and foibles in beginning married life, complicated by an uptight mother-in-law and an eccentric gourmet chef who lives in a loft on the roof of their apartment (their window ledge is the only access to his padlocked premises). A superb choice for any personal, school, or community audiobook collection, Barefoot In The Park is also available in a CD format...

Book Description
With Paintbrush and Shovel showcases the botanical watercolors of Bessie Niemeyer Marshall, a Virginia artist who received scant recognition during her lifetime. Reproduced for the first time in this volume, Marshall's beautiful paintings are the primary surviving record of a unique WPA project that put women to work creating a wildflower sanctuary in Petersburg, Virginia, during the 1930s.
Nancy Kober affectingly recounts the story of this fascinating project and the women involved: the horticulturist Donald Claiborne Holden, who directed the sanctuary's creation; the women of the Petersburg Garden Club and of Petersburg's African American community, who worked hard, in spite of segregated tasks and facilities, to establish a botanical preserve in the city's Lee Park; and the artist Bessie Marshall, whose difficult personal circumstances kept her in obscurity during her lifetime despite her obvious talent and repeated expressions of interest from curators and benefactors. Marshall eventually produced 238 watercolors for the Lee Park collection, 222 of which appear in full color in this book.
With exquisite detail and a subtle palette, the paintings depict a host of native flowers, shrubs, and trees, including some rare or imperiled species. Here, arranged by habitat, are dogwood and cat-tail, pokeweed and passion-flower, angelica and witch-hazel, redbud and rattlesnake-master. Although many of these species still grow in the vicinity of the former sanctuary, the collection is a reminder of the precarious state of many wildflower habitats and the need for continuing efforts to preserve our botanical and historical heritage.
As a gift, a reference, or simply an inspiring read, With Paintbrush and Shovel is a fittingly beautiful representation of a unique meeting of the forces of nature, history, and art.
Customer Reviews:
With Paintbrush and Shovel.......2001-05-02
With Paintbrush and Shovel is certainly a unique book. The beautiful paintings of wild flowers - 238 in all- really look more like high quality photography, they are so exquisitely detailed. The story that goes with the paintings tells an unknown story about work done by WPA women during the depression. One of the projects fostered by Roosevelt, the WPA gave work to unskilled African-American women and it was these women that cleaned up this willderness and brought the wild-flowers to Bessie Marshall to be reproduced in watercolor. The book is well-worth owning.
Breath taking wildflower paintings.......2001-04-19
The wildflower paintings in this book are absolutely unbelievably beautifully detailed. When you see them you will not believe the artist could so accurately paint the tiny delicate features of each flower and could so accurately recreate the wonderful colors. If you like, forget about the wonderful story documenting the WPA project in the 1930s to create a wildflower park and document the flowers with paintings. But, if you are an artist or a wildflower lover or both you must check this out just for the wonderful paintings.
Additionally, the printers spared no expense. They used high quality paper and achieved exquisite reproduction of the paintings. I'm sure they were fearful they would be totally out classed if they did not.
With Paint Brush and Shovel Preserving Virginia's Wildflower.......2000-11-30
This book provides a rare glimpes into the WPA projects especially designed by women. The book also illustrates the history of the park and chronicles the work of a diverse group of women who established a botanical preserve in a City Park during the 30's. The project, of national significance, was part of the WPA that provided work for African Americans and White Women during the depression. How intersting to read that the park provided an income for these deprived women, who created a wildflower/bird preserve for a small city. The beautiful botanical illustrations by B. Marshall are exquisite and the story to follow only enhances the charm of this well documented history.

Customer Reviews:
Ode to Joy!.......2001-06-18
This book contains wonderful poetry, outstanding photography, and a delightful CD of piano music with the accompaniment of a small orchestra. As superb as each element is, the overall structure, design and concept are even more wonderful. I feel like this work is a breakthrough into a new type of communication. Mr. Gordon Parks has created here one of the most moving works to honor women that it has been my pleasure to enjoy. I strongly urge you to acquire this work and be inspired by it!
Before going further, let me mention that the book contains many beautiful nude images of women that would earn its contents an R rating (or even a bit more) if the book were a motion picture. The images will remind you of Edward Weston's work, as the ambiguous line between landscape and the female form are portrayed.
The book is divided into the themes of awakening, longing, remembering, waiting, returning, and homecoming. Each section has its own previously unpublished poetry, color, and thematic photographs. The images alternate among female nudes, landscapes, nudes superimposed on landscapes (like the cover image), flowers, and still lifes. The photographs' compositions, reproduction quality, and connection to the themes and each other are stunning. Although the work is unformly of high quality, I liked the flower photographs best. They will remind you of Robert Mapplethorpe and Georgia O'Keeffe.
Of the many elements in this work, I actually enjoyed the poetry the best. You should play the music as you read the book to deepen your emotional connection and experience.
Here are a few samples of Mr. Parks's understanding of how much meaning women bring to our lives.
"I lie here abandoned,
longing for you to give
the thinnest hope to my heart.
Speak to me." -- Dayspring
"I lie haunted in the ashes
of shapeless memories." -- Memories to Forget
"How could you let him caress hands
I held just one love ago?" -- I'm Not Close
"You and longing are as one." -- I Breath Deeply and Want
"Nothing
can
be
more
indiscreet, or arduous,
than love." -- I Know
"Yet I still know
what I am in search of --
one unending love that claims
the need to be remembered." -- Friendly Advice
"If you would have a star for noon,
it shall be yours." -- A Child Arriving
You can feel the vibrancy of the work from these words, I'm sure. What's amazing to me is that Mr. Parks is now 88. Yet his vision here is that of a quite young man. Remarkable!
After you have enjoyed this outstanding milieu Mr. Parks has created for us, I suggest that you think about what women have inspired you to accomplish that would not otherwise have happened.
To me, above all women are muses making the heavens' silent potential resound with meaning!
Gordon Parks does it again with a Star For Noon.......2000-11-08
Gordon Parks, an American renaiisance man, is one who will never cease to amaze us. A remarkable man with a remarkable vision, he invites us into his world with his new book, A Star For Noon. The book is a compilation of poems and photographs of his greatest muse...woman. Parks, a photographer who gained fame in the 40's, 50's, and 60's as a photographer of Life magazine, publishes still lifes and nudes for his concept piece. The photographs, very tasteful and moving show the reader that this is a man who truly loves women for their strength, intellect, beauty and sensitivity. Through his aesthetic work, we find that he teaches us that women are the most beautiful people in the world. The best way to experience this book is to look at the photographs and read the poetry while listening to the music. The accompanying CD of Parks' music is a welcomed joy for those of us who've appreciated the man's work for a number of years. Although performed live various times, Parks' music has never been available on the market until now. The soothing and moving music of his "A Star For Noon" suite will drive you to tears and joy. My hat goes off to the concertmaster Kermit Moore for helping Dr. Parks bring his musical vision to fruition. We know that Art books dont geniunely sell, but I hope that more and more people know about this book. His previous, "Half Past Autumn", was a great success as a exhibit and a book. A genius and an inspiration, may Gordon Parks keep on keeping on with more great works to come. *If one may be interested in the creative process of Parks' work, HBO will be showing a documentary of Mr. Parks and his work in honor of his 88th birthday on Nov. 30th at 9pm.
Book Description
From a fledgling agrarian nation clinging to the Atlantic seaboard in 1800, the United States by the 1900s was the world's leading industrial nation, manufacturing a third of the world's industrial output. Through nearly 200 photographs and drawings, America Transformed: Engineering and Technology in the Nineteenth Century highlights not only the obvious icons of achievement such as the Brooklyn Bridge and Erie Canal but also the development of the nation's industrial, manufacturing, and transportation infrastructure. Development and innovation in mining; textile, iron and steel mills; water treatment, power and irrigation systems, canals, railroads and bridges all served to transform American life. In 1969 the National Park Service, the Library of Congress, and the American Society of Civil Engineers formed the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) program to document nationally and regionally significant engineering and industrial sites. HAER documentation--in the forms of measured and interpretive drawings, large-format photographs, and written histories--record for posterity the enormous historic engineering and industrial legacy of the United States. Using these resources, Dean Herrin has created a visual sampler of America's nineteenth-century engineering and technology that illuminates the scope and variety of America's industrial transformation.

Book Description
The roads within America's national park system reveal a wide range of technological, aesthetic, and philosophical concerns. Their design and construction epitomize the central challenge of national park management: how to balance environmental protection with public access. The Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), a division of the National Park Service, has spent more than a dozen years documenting the history of this vital aspect of the national park experience.
America's National Park Roads and Parkways brings together 331 measured and interpretive drawings commissioned by HAER to illustrate the physical characteristics, design strategies, construction practices, and visitor experiences of roads in national parks from Acadia to Zion and parkways from the Blue Ridge to the Natchez Trace. Also included are non--Park Service projects that utilized similar design strategies, including the Bronx River Parkway and the Columbia River Highway. The book documents thirty-one projects, explaining how roads shape visitor perceptions, highlighting key characteristics of individual park road systems, and connecting their design and construction to the broader history of American engineering and landscape architecture.
More than a documentary record of historic design and construction practices, this book has practical applications for engineers, landscape architects, and cultural resource specialists in guiding design decisions, interpreting historic sites, and informing contemporary debates on preservation and environmental protection.
