Book Description

After a century in which the lexicon of artists' materials expanded from the classic oil, canvas, stone and plaster to include photography, film, performance, found objects and concepts, the spotlight has finally swung back. A new generation of artists--as well as some who never abandoned figurative painting in the first place--is relishing the solitary, slow, subtle set of processes involved in not just painting, but painting people. They are choosing paint's unique ability to distill a lifetime of events rather than photography's glimpse of a frozen moment. Painting People, edited by the prominent London art historian and critic Charlotte Mullins, unites and contrasts the work of a key group of artists from around the world, and investigates their richly varied accomplishments in lucid text with detailed commentaries, accompanied by more than 150 reproductions. The list of contributing artists is stellar, ranging from photo-based painters like Luc Tuymans, Peter Doig and Marlene Dumas to Pop artists like Sigmar Polke and Alex Katz, photorealists like Chuck Close and Gerhard Richter, Neoexpressionists like Cecily Brown, and comics-inspired painters like Yoshitomo Nara, Inka Essenhigh and Takashi Murakami. There are erotic grotesques from John Currin and Lisa Yuskavage, meditations on the muse by Elizabeth Peyton and Lucian Freud, "Repro-realistic" work from Neo Rauch and of course self-portraits by Philip Akkerman and Marcel Dzama, among others.

Where is David Humphrey? Clearly should have been included. A nice sequel could include more artists that deal with Figurative abstraction such as Humphrey, Amy Sillman and many others.

Also, not enough text, and could have had more images

This book is paired with an Odd Nerdrum book, in one of those "Better Together" promos that Amazon does. I'm not sure who decided these two books belong together. Some Amazon executive looked at the Nerdrum book, and said "here's a serious traditional realist. Let's pair his book up with a collection of cartoons."

And cartoons they are. I expected a collection of figurative works to include at least some serious works. Freud is in the collection, but beyond that, there's a load of stuff you'd see in a SoHo gallery where hype out-ranks skills. I have gone through the book three times, and have not seen a single artist I'd want to know more about.

Yes, I get modern art. I know what they're trying to do, blah blah blah, but the book was misrepresented by pairing it with a book by a realist, and further misrepresented by placing a semi-realist painting on the cover. That painting, by the way, isn't even in the book, nor does the dust jacket credit the artist. It's not representative of the book at large (I know. I know. I judged the book by the cover).

A book of figure painting would rightly include Steven Assael, Jeremy Lipking, Robert Liberace and other young greats. What it did include were over-hyped artists who can rightly be called modern artists, but not figurative painters.

I couldn't think of a single reason to keep this book, and for the first time in nearly ten years as an Amazon customer, I asked for a refund. Amazon has a very easy refund procedure, and if you've bought this book, I recommend you use it.

For those who are looking for a serious collection of figurative work, try "Strokes of Genius". I haven't seen it, but I've heard very good things about it.

4 out of 5 stars Good start could be better.......2007-06-11

In one sense I really like this book. It has oodles of high quality images of very contemporary artists work, and lets be honest, it's hard to find good images of contemporary artists work a lot of the time. I also liked the text that prefaced each section of the book, it was well written and interesting. However, many of the artists featurerd I felt were a little sub par- that is to say, I've seen better contemporary figure painters. Some are great; Freud, Saville, Yuskagvich, Currins, but many were just not up to the level of some of the great painters featured. Plus, the text about each individual artist was very brief. Over all, i'm glad I have it, but I feel it could be a better overview of figurative painting today.

4 out of 5 stars Figure painting is back.......2007-06-03

This book is a good survey of contemporary figure painting. After an introduction explaining the author's aim, namely to present those artists who paint the human figure with the idea of engaging wider themes than the mere painting of a portrait (such as implicit criticism of the violence of our society in Furnas's paintings, or the intimacy of the human being in Peyton's portraits), the author divides her book into five chapters in order to study what these wider themes are:

The figure unravelled
The urban condition
Other worlds
Folk tales
The past deconstructed.

Lavish illustrations of works by Lucian Freud, Chuck Close, Elizabeth Peyton, John Currin, Barnaby Furnas, Lisa Yuskavage, Dana Schutz, Marcel Dzama, to name but a few, are accompanied by a short text describing either the technique or the objective, or both, of each of the artists mentioned.

More an introduction than an in-depth study, this book makes for good reading and gives a fair overview of the state of contemporary figure painting, whatever your opinion is on the selected artists, of whom one may wonder if they will all stand the test of time...

1 out of 5 stars Very, Very Dissapointed.......2007-05-30

I was very disappointed with this book. The cover painting by Currin led me to buy it, hoping to see more of this type of interesting portrait work. Unfortunately, the book is filled with Modernistic art portraits, if you can call them that, and seems to focus on grotesque, distorted, weird, and overall just plain ugly paintings. Sure, the paintings are of people, but that's about as far as I could consider this art to be portraits. Sorry, I used the word "art" to refer to these paintings. My mistake. Anyway, if you like Modern Art, and are looking for some truly offensive paintings, this may be your cup of tea. The cover portrait by Currin isn't even shown in the book, although two other interesting paintings by Currin are.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Maurycy Gottlieb was born in 1856 in the small city known in Polish as Drohobycz, then attached to the province of Galicia in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the course of his very short life (he died at age 23), Gottlieb painted dozens of extraordinary works that have since found homes in museums in eastern Europe. (where he has long been honored as a Polish artist) and in Israel, where, following a major exhibition in 1991 in Tel-Aviv, he achieved the status of a founding father of Jewish art. The subjects of his paintings range from self-portraits and portraits of family and friends to "orientalist" themes, historical topics, and biblical scenes, including two important representations of Jesus.

Ezra Mendelsohn situates this impressive body of work in the context of contemporary European painting, and uses Gottlieb's work to illuminate the sociopolitical and cultural complexity of the multi-ethnic and multi-religious Austro-Hungarian Empire prior to World War I. Interpreting the paintings, and their reception in Gottlieb's day and beyond, Mendelsohn touches on a number of key issues in modern Jewish history, among them identity, assimilation, acculturation, nationalism, the relationship between Jewry and European culture, and relations between Jews and non-Jews, particularly between Poles and Jews.

Mendelsohn notes that Gottlieb "was an ideal subject for a historian of modern Jewish Eastern Europe with an interest in the visual dimension of Jewish culture." Since the artist's death in 1879, Polish nationalists, Jewish integrationists, Jewish nationalists, and finally the Israeli Jewish establishment, have laid claims to his art. Yet Mendelsohn shows that the subjects Gottlieb chose to paint--particularly the historical subjects--demonstrate that Gottlieb was first and foremost an artist of Jewish univeralism.

5 out of 5 stars Co-winner of the 2003 Prize for Polish Studies.......2004-04-13

Painting a People: Maurycy Gottlieb and Jewish Art, by Ezra Mendelsohn, published by Brandeis University Press was a co-winner of the 2003 AAASS/Orbis Books Prize, sponsored by Orbis Books in London, for an outstanding English-language book on any aspect of Polish affairs.

The other winner was Jolanta T. Pekacz's Music in the Culture of Polish Galicia, 1772-1914 (University of Rochester Press).

The Prize committee - Izabela Kalinowska-Blackwood, Andrzej Tymowski, and Halina Filipowicz - wrote the following about the winning volumes:

Both books are exemplary monographs based on meticulous archival research. Both provide an important point of entry for exploring a lost symbolic world in a rather out-of-the-way place, at least in geopolitical terms: the multiethnic province of Galicia in the Habsburg Monarchy. Ezra Mendelsohn's elegantly written book concentrates on the work of Maurycy Gottlieb, a founding father of modern Jewish art, who was born in a small town known in Polish as Drohobycz, now associated primarily with the internationally acclaimed writer Bruno Schulz. Jolanta T. Pekacz's study addresses an understudied area - popular music genres in nineteenth-century Galicia - within a well-informed historical framework. In examing their topics, both Mendelsohn and Pekacz also tell us much about the multiethnic society of nineteenth-century Galicia - about its social tensions, divisions, and hierarchies, and about about its strength and fragility.

Mendelsohn's and Pekacz's studies not only expand our knowledge and understanding of the social and symbolic world of old Galicia, but they also challenge our tendency to think of culture - any culture - as a static and homogeneous entity (if only to make it possible to talk about it). To do justice to the complexity of their project, both Mendelsohn and Pekacz keep alive several perspectives, chief among them the perspective of cultural studies. They show that, contrary to a common misconception, cultural studies are not primarily concerned with banal populism. They agree that all forms of cultural production need to be studied - not as self-contained and independent entities, knowable apart from their own time and place, but rather in their particular historical contexts. They also agree that the perspective of cultural studies offers fresh insights into the underlying importance of literature and the arts in the formation of national identities.

Ezra Mendelsohn's Painting a People: Maurycy Gottlieb and Jewish Art and Jolanta T. Pekacz's Music in the Culture of Polish Galicia, 1772-1914 are highly original studies on the cutting-edge of several disciplines: social history, history of ideas, cultural studies, Jewish studies, Polish studies, and Polish Jewish studies. Both books offer the rare intellectual pleasure that goes with disentangling intricate historical patterns behind the mythologized image of Galicia as a land of pride and tears, where good men and women were busy shaking the dead hand of the past.

This book is great! Very cute to look at, easy to follow, and the colorful, fun pictures are wonderful. We have this for my son, but all of his friends (girls and boys, 6 years old) want to draw everything on every page and they can do it very well. Steps are simple to master for ages as young as 4, and the book helps build confidence because the kids can really draw what is shown. Variations are easy too. We love it. Great gift idea!

4 out of 5 stars Help for the beginner to add figures to their paintings.......2007-09-26

The author gives good instruction on how to add figures to watercolor, using her own work as examples. The instructions go from basic palettes to value sketches and show demonstrations.

The author's style is quick and loose. This will seem less intimidating to beginners, who could be easily frustrated when they can't achieve some of the luminous and detailed results of a master.

The author's palette has great suggestions, such as transparent red oxide and yellow oxide, which are transparent versions of palette standards like Venetian Red and Yellow Ochre. But she does recommend alizarin crimson, which today is easily replaced by quinacridone rose or violet and which is less likely to fade. A quibble, but I feel alizarin crimson is better replaced by the quinacridone pigments these days. She shows mixing variation with red-yellow-blue, using manganese blue, but you should be aware this will be manganese hue.

The most valuable part of the book for beginners might be how to do value sketches, using black and white photos or rendering in digital software to see the darks and lights. She shows how dark shadows behind figures can be manipulated to add life and light to the painting--washing in a mix of brighter colors that still have the same value as the deep shadow, but are livelier and more pleasing to the eye.

The best paintings are the ones of Hart's father and his peach orchard. The peaches glow and the shadows on the face and under boxes and barrows are interesting. Her style is not tight and photographic, but it gets the message across beautifully. Any beginner who wants to try portraits and figures can benefit from this book.

3 out of 5 stars amateur.......2007-04-12

The paintings in this book are amateur and uninspiring. It is a good book for a beginning watercolorist, as it offers a lot of the usual paint, paper, brushes advice, but the paintings themselves are less than exciting.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-03-16

This book was amazing. I loved the pictures and it had very helpful information. I would definately recommend this book to anyone intersted in painting. The paintings were beautiful, this lady knows what she's doing!

4 out of 5 stars International Artist Magazine - People and Figures .......2004-07-31

If you receive International Artist Magazine, and I highly recommend that you subscribe if you haven't already, then you've seen all of these paintings featured in this book before in the magazines. BUT - you do get an expanded view of the artwork, as well as a more in-depth interview with each individual artist, since each artist gets their own page in the book.
The "Find-It-Faster" feature in the book, (pictorial pages of content) is not much more than filler, in my opinion. I would have prefered 17 more featured artists, instead of 17 pages of reduced work of those already in the book. The artwork on the front of the book is indeed shown in more depth on pages 6 and 7, by the way. [see previous reviewer's statement]
The last page titled, "Terms you should know" is an abbreviated list of art terms every artist should already know. Oddly, the list stops at the letter "L" for "lifting." I believe there are other art terms starting with M through Z that are worthy of inclusion. Perhaps the other books have included those letters.
Overall, if you enjoy International Artist Magazine and long for greater details, this book series is for you since you can pick and choose your specific genre: people and figures; landscapes; still life and florals; seascapes, rivers and lakes; favorite subjects; and flowers and gardens.

4 out of 5 stars Emphasis on oil.......2004-07-20

A hundred different painters explain how they tackled in their paintings one of the most difficult, elusive and rewarding subjects: people. Each painting gets a page long explanation, focused in one of the techniques employed or in some creativity issue relevant to the subject matter. The fact that most artists list the colors they used is definitely a plus. My only qualm with this book are that, being watercolor my medium of choice, I found this books places a lot of attention in oil (and if you're a pastelist or use some other technique, you're in an even worse position). Another minor flaw is the fact that the beautiful picture on the cover is not of those analyzed inside. However, I am being nitpicky, as this book is beatiful and inspiring, and will help anyone seeking to expand his or her creative horizons-

n a small Alabama town in Zion County, life is finally looking up for 20-year-old Donnette Sullivan. Having just inherited her aunt's old house and beauty shop, she's taken over the business. Her husband, Tim, recently crippled in an accident, is beginning to cope not only with his disability but also with the loss of his dreams. Once a promising artist who gave up art for sports, Tim paints a sign for Donnette's new shop, Making Waves, that causes ripples throughout the small southern community. In a sequence of events-sometimes funny, sometimes tragic-the lives of Donnette, Tim, and others in their small circle of family and friends are unavoidably affected. Once the waves of change surge through Zion County, the lives of its people are forever altered.

2 out of 5 stars Run from this tidal wave...........2007-03-08

Nicely written details about small town Alabama. The author's end notes say that she tried to write about the special bonds of friendship between males. Instead, she ended up overshadowing that story with the story of two vile, scheming, and manipulative small-town women doing whatever it took to get their way; the touching, developing, story of Tim and Taylor was kicked aside. The sudden and inexplicable "ending" didn't really resolve anything...I was left feeling cheated out of resolution.

I've heard nice things about Ms. King's writing. This was my first exposure to her work and will try another of her books. Maybe I just start with the wrong one?

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Book! A great family saga read! .......2006-07-26

I enjoyed this book very well.

Donette Sullivan, the main character in the book is just starting her business as a hairdresser in a home she and her husband inherited from her aunt. The book begins with Auntie Maudie's death. She was the town's schoolteacher, and everyone was grieving terribly over her death. Donnette was asked to do her hair and make-up for the funeral, and very reluctantly after Mary Frances Clark talks her into it, she does thinking it will help her business grow.

Donette's husband Tim, is crippled from a serious accident caused by Taylor. He was formerly an artist and football player until this happened. When they have Aunt Maudie's funeral, Taylor is coming into Alabama-and since the whole town hates his guts-no one wants him there. But he is coming for his Aunt Della, who is becoming much older and decrepit, and needs her nephew there. She raised the boy, as Charlotte, his mother was only a whore who wanted nothing to do with her own son. Taylor wants only to help his aunt, as the Clark family wants only to put her in a nursing hime so that Sonny, (Taylor's brother), and snobby wife Ellis can take over and have Aunt Della's house for themselves, and Ellis wants Glenda her sister to take over there as well.

There is a great big family fight over this matter and as Aunt Della seems to grow weaker, the problems try to work themselves out which isn't easy-and may not. Especially when no one is willing to forgive Taylor for the past and what has happened to Tim because of it.

4 out of 5 stars Making Waves is a fun read!.......2006-07-15

I really enjoyed the author's style of writing from each character's viewpoint. The style reminds me of Sue Monk Kidd's "The Secret Life of Bees." It held me in its grip until the very end, which was the only disappointing part. I wish the author would have spent more time developing the ending. It all happened too abruptly. I thought this story could have gone on much longer. I'd love to see her write a sequel.

2 out of 5 stars Making Waves.......2006-07-05

I felt as if I were reading a book for teens - the plot was thin and continued to hold one theme as the central "mystery" or glue to hold the story together. It was tiresome and even the ending was a disappointment. The author wrote in southern cliche's which failed to bring humor to a tiresome, drug out subject.
Unlike the author's book Sunday Wife - it seemed to fail in it's delivery.

4 out of 5 stars typical small town stuff!.......2006-06-20

I liked the book. I found it to be similar to many small town issues. Small town stuff is really shallow but too many, it's real. I found some of the characters, Ellis her hubby and families to be fillers in the story. Cassandra King writes the story as the present and throughout the story you learn of the past through her characters and that just makes you want to read more! I hated to put the book down!

I found out about this book when an online newsletter (Family Corner News) featured one of its projects. The project was decorating a flowerpot with seashells, filling it with sand and a fat candle. Really looked nice and just what I needed for my seaside themed bathroom.
That made me look at the book. It's great to find ways to use all those terra cotta flower pots sitting around in the garage.
