Handbook of Clinical Intervention in Child Sexual Abuse (Lexington Books)
ASIN: 0876308248 |
Book Description
This volume demonstrates the power of art therapy as a tool for intervening with children from violent homes. Emphasis is given to the short-term setting where time is at a premium and circumstances are unpredictable - because within this setting, mental health practitioners often experience a sense of helplessness in their work with the youngest victims of abusive families.; In this new edition, the author describes the intervention process from intake to termination, highlighting the complex issues involved at various levels of evaluation and interpretation. The text is augmented with 95 children's drawings, which serve to fill the gap between theory and reality.; Specific topics include: inherent frustrations for therapists working in battered women's shelters; what to include in art evaluation; evaluating child abuse and neglect; group art intervention in shelters; and art expression as assessment and therapy with sexually abused children.
Customer Reviews:
Breatking the Silence is only the beginning.......2006-11-10
This book offers extensive knowledge of both the children's perspectives of their home life and shelter life. Working with this population is trying at best, one never knows if the mother is going back; because of this children learn to cope in ways that are mostly nonverbal. They've learned to stay quiet for the sake of family. Cathy Malchiodi explores this silence; in ways that, only art and other expressive therapies can offer. This book offers insight for new and experienced therapist who are working with this population.
A thought-provoking and practical text that provides a framework for working with traumatized children........1997-12-18

A must for all mental health professionals who work with traumatized children. Readers in general will find the more than 90 drawings by children from violent homes both fascinating and poignant. Author presents the use of art therapy with clarity and simplicity,so that therapists can immediately learn the use of this tool in their work with children who have been abused.

6 Stars for Contemporary ATx with Adolescents!.......2000-01-24
Shirley Riley has synthesized her vast clinical experiences with adolescents into a wonderfully pragmatic, insightful, and realistic text which addresses contemporary adolescence and today's priorities in adolescent treatment. While other authors have described the use of art therapy with adolescents, Riley goes beyond classic and often outdated developmental and psychological theories about adolescence and takes a refreshing look at adolescent therapy within a contemporary context. The significance of societal, cultural, and familial inlfluences is emphasized along with the importance of narrative approaches, post modern thought, and short-term, solution-focused treatment. Riley also infuses a variety of salient clinical issues such as distancing, reflecting, and timing in adolescent therapy, addressing and respecting metaphorical communication, and understanding the therapist's countertransference or "entanglements" that inevitably arise when working with adolescents. Additionally, the reader is treated to lively case descriptions and practical clinical applications of art therapy in adolescent group treatment, adolescents and family therapy, inpatient and outpatient populations, residential programming, school settings, and a wide range of individual treatment situations.

Customer Reviews:
Useful and easy to follow.......2000-04-27
I have found this book to be very helpful in preparing to teach and teaching Morse code to a child. I appreciate the information on the history of Morse code, and found the descriptions of other alternative methods for communication to be helpful for future work with other people who have special needs. The personal accounts from people who rely on Morse code for communicating with others and for self expression is truly inspiring! The suggestions for teaching and learning Morse code, as well as the Morse code teaching icons have provided me with appropriate and easy to use methods for teaching Morse code in a fun way that children can enjoy. This book will provide teachers, caregivers and those who are looking for alternative methods for communication with the information they need to begin to learn Morse code in a way that is easy to understand and use. I highly recommend it!
Book Description
An increasing number of families and professionals are involved with severely communication-impaired children, adolescents and adults who use alternative communication systems to compensate for delayed systems and strategies that can be used to increase the communicative possibilities of people with limited spoken language. The authors discuss factors that are important when choosing communication systems, assessment strategies, environmental adaptation, and the principles for teaching comprehension and use of such communication systems to individuals with different disabilities; including motor impairments, learning disability and autism.
This book is unique within the field of augmentative and alternative communication with its basis in modern developmental theories of language and communication, its practical approach with many examples and focus on every-day situations, and its coherent and readable text. It may serve as an introductory text book for speech and language therapists, teachers in school and preschool, psychologists and care nurses, as well as a source of information for families with members who have severe developmental speech and language disorders.
