Best known for tackling controversial issues through richly told fictional accounts, Jodi Picoult's 14th novel, Nineteen Minutes, deals with the truth and consequences of a smalltown high-school shooting. Set in Sterling, New Hampshire, Picoult offers reads a glimpse of what would cause a 17-year-old to wake up one day, load his backpack with four guns, and kill nine students and one teacher in the span of nineteen minutes. As with any Picoult novel, the answers are never black and white, and it is her exceptional ability to blur the lines between right and wrong that make this author such a captivating storyteller.

On Peter Houghton's first day of kindergarten, he watched helplessly as an older boy ripped his lunch box out of his hands and threw it out the window. From that day on, his life was a series of humiliations, from having his pants pulled down in the cafeteria, to being called a freak at every turn. But can endless bullying justify murder? As Picoult attempts to answer this question, she shows us all sides of the equation, from the ruthless jock who loses his ability to speak after being shot in the head, to the mother who both blames and pities herself for producing what most would call a monster. Surrounding Peter's story is that of Josie Cornier, a former friend whose acceptance into the popular crowd hangs on a string that makes it impossible for her to reconcile her beliefs with her actions.

At times, Nineteen Minutes can seem tediously stereotypical-- jocks versus nerds, parent versus child, teacher versus student. Part of Picoult's gift is showing us the subtleties of these common dynamics, and the startling effects they often have on the moral landscape. As Peter's mother says at the end of this spellbinding novel, "Everyone would remember Peter for nineteen minutes of his life, but what about the other nine million?" --Gisele Toueg

Book Description

In nineteen minutes, you can mow the front lawn, color your hair, watch a third of a hockey game. In nineteen minutes, you can bake scones or get a tooth filled by a dentist; you can fold laundry for a family of five....In nineteen minutes, you can stop the world, or you can just jump off it.

In nineteen minutes, you can get revenge.

Sterling is a small, ordinary New Hampshire town where nothing ever happens -- until the day its complacency is shattered by a shocking act of violence. In the aftermath, the town's residents must not only seek justice in order to begin healing but also come to terms with the role they played in the tragedy. For them, the lines between truth and fiction, right and wrong, insider and outsider have been obscured forever. Josie Cormier, the teenage daughter of the judge sitting on the case, could be the state's best witness, but she can't remember what happened in front of her own eyes. And as the trial progresses, fault lines between the high school and the adult community begin to show, destroying the closest of friendships and families.

Nineteen Minutes is New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult's most raw, honest, and important novel yet. Told with the straightforward style for which she has become known, it asks simple questions that have no easy

answers: Can your own child become a mystery to you? What does it mean to be different in our society? Is it ever okay for a victim to strike back? And who -- if anyone -- has the right to judge someone else?

5 out of 5 stars If you have teenagers now or plan to someday, read it!.......2007-10-03

Stark. Honest. Blunt. The truth hurts and Picoult reveals it whether we want to know it or not in her wrenching novel about a school shooting and the aftermath. As a former student-turned-teacher, I have been on both sides of the educational fence, and was curious about this latest offering from one of my favorite authors. Picoult so thoroughly captures the thoughts and actions of today's teens, to the extent that we feel like we are dwelling amongst them. The greatest feat she has accomplished here is that we truly don't know who to side with. At least for me, I found myself feeling an unexpected amount of sympathy for the shooter (ha - see? I almost typed victim). Who IS the victim of this alarming tale? Maybe it's all of them - the shooter, his parents, the deceased, the survivors, the rest of the community. Whatever the case, I urge all parents - heck, any member of a community - to read this book. It will open your eyes to what you think you know about teens and schools and what's REALLY behind those perfect, plastic Barbie-doll smiles. I cannot praise Picoult enough for her courage in tackling such sensitive subject matters. She is a truly gifted writer who sure knows how to pack an emotional punch in all of her novels, this one definitely more than the rest.

3 out of 5 stars Could Have Been So Much Better.......2007-09-30

Nineteen Minutes is the story of a New Hampshire high school shooting that resulted in ten deaths and the wounding of nineteen others, some of whom were left with physical disabilities and mental scars that would be with them for the rest of their lives. It is Peter Houghton's story. Peter Houghton, a sensitive boy with few social skills or friends, was always different in the eyes of his schoolmates. He was a natural target for bullies out to impress their own friends and his life was all downhill from the first day of kindergarten when his new lunch box was thrown out of the school bus window onto the highway where it was crushed by oncoming traffic.

By the time that Peter was a high school junior, the same group of bullies had been slamming him into lockers, punching him, verbally abusing him and otherwise generally intimidating him for as long as he could remember. After sixth grade, he had even been abandoned by the one close friend he had had up to then when she decided that she wanted to be popular and realized that her friendship with Peter was going to make that goal impossible to achieve. So when Peter snapped, he snapped big time, and deciding that it was payback time at Sterling High School he changed a city forever in just nineteen bloody minutes.

Nineteen Minutes is not a terrible book but it is a disappointing one because it could have been so much more than it turned out to be. Jodi Picoult offers nothing new to the discussion of school shootings, what causes them, or how they can be prevented. Instead, she deals in stereotypical characters and a sideshow romance that add little but pages to her novel. Rather than developing the characters of some of the bullies in the story to give insight into why some people get such great pleasure from humiliating those physically weaker than themselves, she offers up cardboard characters like Detective Patrick DuCharme whose constant one-liners give him more the personality of a stand-up comedian than that of a competent detective. She spends more time developing a romance between DuCharme and Judge Alex Cormier, the mother of one of the victims, than she does in trying to explain why school shootings have become so common in recent years. I did not expect, or want, a romance novel from Picoult but I got one.

Picoult's pacing of her story is disappointing because of the way that she so gradually builds up the suspense and mystery surrounding what happened on that fateful day only to end it all abruptly with somewhat of a surprise ending and a quick summary of what happened after the trial. Less time spent on an unnecessary romantic sideshow and more on a better written ending would have made this a much stronger book.

The audio version of Nineteen Minutes is read by actress Carol Monda who turns in a competent reading of this 18-disc recording. My only quarrel with Monda's performance is the "little boy" voice and cadence that she consistently uses for all of her male characters regardless of their age. That quirk made it difficult to take some of her characters seriously and may have contributed to my negative impression of Detective DuCharme.

5 out of 5 stars A book club hit.......2007-09-30

Even though the subject matter of this abook is quite disturbing, most of my book club friends gave it 5 stars. At first I was saying it should be read by all parent and teachers. It gives such an insight into the torments of teenage life. However, I have ammended my opinion of the book's impact. It gives us insight into how we influence everyone we interact with in this life. I will try to in the future be considerate of how I treat my family and all people I cross paths with.

4 out of 5 stars Another great book by Jodi Picoult .......2007-09-30

Wow! Jodi Picoult has done it again. I think this is one of her better books. She tackles a very difficult and emotional subject and she does so with wonderful sensitivity. This book is so real, I felt as if I truly knew the characters and was right there alongside them. I found myself crying on a few occasions.
She tells the story from many different points of view and bounces back and forth through time. As with most of her books, there is a "twist" at the end. I do have to say, though, that I would have liked to see a slightly different ending. I will not say much more as I do not want to spoil it for those that have not read it.
This book is a must read!

5 out of 5 stars A Very Interesting Book.......2007-09-29

I picked up "Nineteen Minutes" by Jodi Picoult after a conversation with a co-worker. She was a big fan of Picoult, but had not yet read this book. I picked it up on Friday and finished it on Tuesday, after several late evenings.

"Nineteen Minutes" tells the story of a bullied young man who decides to take matters into his own hands after the school administration and his parents don't provide the help he needs. It is also the story of his parents, a girl who used to be his friends, and her mother, who was once friend's with the shooter's mother. Using a flashback, flash forward story-telling method, Picoult tells the present events and the previous events that led to the tragedy.

While most of the other reviews that I have read about Picoult say that she has utilizes "pat" endings, I was very surprised at the end of this book. In fact, I was in tears as the final chapters rolled around.

I think this particular story struck a nerve with me because I am an educator by profession, studying to become a principal. The main issue in this book was bullying and that is, unfortunately, something that is dealt with by many students every day. While the book is graphic in some areas, it is a book that I would recommend for all educators to read, not just for the entertainment value, but also for the insight that Picoult provides into the feelings of bullied children.

But with Yarni, his gorgeous wife (and a brilliant lawyer), now calling the shots, Des isn’t going back to the slammer without a fierce fight. Even with the heat on, Des manages to take his game to the next level and finds a new hustle, one that will allow him to possess the three things all major players desire: money, power, and respect. He becomes a preacher. Reluctantly, Yarni stands by her man as he trades in his triple beam scale for a Bible and a Bentley and makes his Church of the Good Life Ministry a welcoming place for all sinners to step up to the altar.

But when Des’s nephew is killed in the high-stakes heroin trade and Des learns that someone close to him okayed the hit, the dyed-in-the-wool gangsta sets aside the Bible for the gospel of the streets–even if it means risking the one person who’s always had his back.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I searched 4 book stores for this book and they were all sold out. When I finally found it on amazon, I had to get it immediately. I finished this book in about 2 days. I just could not put it down. Everytime I started to put it down, it got good again. Thanks Nikki.

4 out of 5 stars La Dee Da Dee Da.......2007-08-25

The sequel was a bit disappointing. I did get through it but it took me a couple of days. It was an ok book but it wasn't one of those books where I had to read it during every free moment I have. I still had to ween my way through the grammatical errors (fault of the publisher), but it was alright. Some of the stuff was a bit far-fetched. I am from the streets so I have a clue. You can read the 2 books or not read them. I will continue to check her out though. I see here writing skills evolving with time. I recommend support Turner and her writings. Peace and Blessings!

4 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-08-20

I thought Forever a Hustlers Wife was a GREAT come back. Of course I thought it wasn't as good as A Hustlers Wife, but it was good enough to ease my craving to know where Des and Yarni end up. Reading the Special Message at the beginning really gave me a new respect for writers! This was a great story despite all the struggles Nikki has gone through, and although it wasn't the best I have faith in her that she will come back with something that will blow her fans away!

3 out of 5 stars Forever a hustler's wife.......2007-08-13

First you must read a hustler wife it is a great book 5 stars. Now forever a hustlers wife dosn't do justice to the first novel. it is okay, the book had to many things going on. Bambi from Glamorous life had a part, new characters, Lava who is Des Nephew's girl needs her own book she is a great character. All and all the book was okay it was not as good as hustlers wife, glamorous life, project chick, nor riding drity on I-95 this book is at the bottom of the list for Nikki Turner books. i gave it 3 stars because you cannot give 2.5 stars. Nikki Turner is a great writer it was just probably hard following up on such a great book.

2 out of 5 stars I've been let down ...once again.......2007-08-02

I wanted to throw all the blame on 50 cent because I blew good money and time on his book Death Before Dishonor and I thought how dare he put Nikki Turner name on a book just to get her faithful readers to buy that book. Then the day finally comes, the release of Forever a Hustlers Wife. I HATED THIS BOOK. Maybe Nikki should have did her fans a favor and saved Forever a Hustlers Wife when her heart and soul was ready to embrace the lives of Des and Yarni. She mentioned she had another book she wanted to write instead The Black Widow, I wish she would have left Forever a Hustlers Wife alone until she was ready to tell a good story. It took me over a month to finish this book it just wasnt a good story. Three strikes and your out!!! I hope The Black Widow change me back into the true fan I've tried to be.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding Basic Human Behavior in the Workplace.......2006-09-26

"Organizational Behavior: An Experiential Approach" has rightfully earned its reputation as a practical applied OD Classic! While traditional primary and secondary education emphasize building mental libraries of `theoretical knowledge,' Osland, Kolb, and Rubin recognize that working professionals learn through applicable experiences that address real-world challenges--thus, `an experiential approach.' I have successfully used lessons from "Organizational Behavior: An Experiential Approach" during consulting engagements in both private and public sectors, in both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, and in graduate business education. Consistently, through `experiential approaches' as described in "Organizational Behavior", adults learn more useful lessons from their experiences, learn what their lessons mean, learn how to generalize their learning for other applicable situations, AND apply more of their learning when they are back on the job. Experiential learning goes beyond merely increasing knowledge and actually changes individual (and organizational) behavior.
I highly recommend "Organizational Behavior: An Experiential Approach" for everyone working to achieve results through other people--and also for anyone seeking to better understand themselves and how they interact with other people.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding research results in clear & useful guide.......2007-09-19

I was surprised to have my horizons expanded greatly though I had initially expressed skepticism at another book on diversity. On the contrary, this one contains real, practical, appropriate cultural nuances and advice on particulars for many national and cultural traditions. I heartily suggest it as a cornerstone of a modern cultural analysis of the factors that can contribute to enhancing diversity. Even though a bit dated, their research still is valuable. I cannot wait for the next edition!

4 out of 5 stars Essential reading for executives - and politicians.......2006-02-26

This book is deservedly already an international management classic, and should be required reading for anybody who needs to interact with other nationalities and cultures. Hofstede got there first with his classifications of cultural dimensions, but Hampden-Turner & Trompenaars' are arguably more compelling, and - more importantly - the book is both highly readable and replete with case studies. It gives American and Northern European business people insights into why their assumptions about what motivates people from other parts of the world are wrong, and why so many US-centered initiatives founder on the rocks of unrecognized cultural differences. Send a copy to the White House!

5 out of 5 stars For Business Poeple and Managers.......2005-06-30

This is a shorter, and more condensed version of the authors' earlier book 'Building Cross Cultural Competence'. In this book, the authors' target managers and business people who are looking to understand cultural differences and how to deal with them in a variety of circumstances and situations. Each chapter begins with am introduction to one of the dimensions, a discussion of how the differences manifest themselves and concludes with 'tips' on how to deal, and how to do business, with the different culture explored in that chapter.

The authors use the same six dimensions of culture introduced in their earlier work (universalism vs. particularism; individualism vs communitarism; specificity vs. diffusion; achieved status vs. ascribed status; inner direction vs. outer direction; and sequential time vs. synchronous time), but they present these dimensions in a much more accessible and simple manner with more emphasis on what each dimension actually means for business people and how it affects business-related situations.

This book has become the reference for business people and managers in the area of culture. Simple and very well written without losing credibility; this is a book that will enlighten and guide any manager in dealing with people from other cultures. While in some ways it is a 'western-centric' book (targeted to Western - especially US - managers), it remains very useful for managers from other cultures since the authors have attempted to keep the examples and discussion culturally neutral.

I had purchased this book sometime ago, but never got a chance to read it. When I did get that chance, the book was outstanding. I would suggest that you read "Forever a Hustler's Wife" as soon as you are done with this one.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely Worth the Read...........2007-08-25

"A Hustler's Wife was a pretty good book. I am not familiar with Turner's writing, so this was my first experience. There were a lot of publishing errors and missed words. I had to use context clues to figure some things out, but overall, it was an easy read. It was a page turner, but not quite the page turner I expected after reading the reviews. By the time I finished the book, I was ready for the sequel. However, I will say that one thing I LOVE about Turner is how she incorporated spirituality into the street. That was hot!! Either way, I would say pick it up and read it, but buy it on Amazon.com.

I love to read....2 to 3 books a week. This was not at all interesting, but when I start them, I always finish. It took about 2 long days to finish. I'm not even the least bit interested in the sequel. Sorry.

    Book Description

This bilingual (English-Spanish) catalogue raisonna of Rufino Tumayo's prints will reproduce in color every print--including xylographies, lithographies, silkscreens, artist's books, and the late mixographies--ever made by the great Mexican artist. Tamayo made approximately 320 prints between 1925 and 1991. Many of them were made using different inks, and these ink colors are respected in the catalogue's printing; in several cases, the printing processes themselves will also be reproduced. Comprehensive and expert commentary is made on each print regarding print-run, workshop, and publisher. This project has taken the Tamayo Museum and Foundation in Mexico City almost ten years of research to complete.

Tressa is a fly girl accustomed to the lavish lifestyle that her possessive, deranged, baby's daddy, Lucky, has provider her with. In order to keep her high post standards of living, she has excused so many of his unforgivable actions. It is not until he pulls off the ultimate stunt that she realizes that no mink coat, car, house or any amount of money is worth her peace of mind.

Never blinking or thinking twice, Tressa leaves everything behind, with the exception of her street savvy, and sets out to make a life of her own, one that would be filled with hard times and even harder luck. Tressa soon finds herself making the transition from public figure to public assistance. Every day of her life seems like one drama-filled chapter after another. From the baby daddy drama, to the backstabbing friends, to the various unforgettable men she sorts through and disposes of.

There will be times she has to struggle and scramble just to make ends meet, and other times when she will stand tall and hold her own.

In this captivating tale, Tressa's voyage will expose readers to a side of a struggling single mother that has yet to be revealed to them

This book was recommended by my daughters friend (teenagers) I was thinking to myself what does she know about picking books, I really enjoyed this book. The book keeps it real for the PJ's, this is a page turner and was off the hook!!! I can't believe I almost passed this up.

4 out of 5 stars From Rags to Riches To so much More!!.......2007-08-13

I really enjoyed reading this book(even though i'm kind of late) I really admired Tressa's character and the way she handled herself throughout the book. she never gave up and continued to be a great mother towards her children no matter how rough things had gotten for her.I kind of predicted the out come with Indie and thought it was funny how Lucky got done in the end. The book would have been better with an epilogue cause I would liked to have known what happened to some of the other characters but overall this was a great read and worth your money!!!

    5 out of 5 stars HOT!.......2007-08-13

I read this book a long time ago! I truly enjoyed every minute of it.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS BOOK.......2007-03-02

I loved this book! This was a one day read, because once I started I couldn't stop. I really enjoyed this book. To me, A Project Chick was much better than A Hustler's Wife, but I like everything I read by Nikki Turner. This book was not predictable, which is a quality in fiction that I like, because you do anticipate. I reccommend this book to others, if you are looking for ghetto urban fictional drama, then you made a good choice in reading A Project Chick, A++++

    Book Description

This brief and inexpensive text provides a concise introduction to the dynamics of racial and ethnic relations. After summarizing key concepts and theories, the authors develop a simple theoretical framework that guides the presentation of data on each of the prominent ethnic groups in America. As a result, the book examines each ethnic group from the same perspective, allowing students to compare the dynamics of discrimination against African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, white ethnics, and Latinos. Moreover, this framework provides a way to examine ethnic relations around the world and to compare the dynamics in other parts of the world with those operating in America.

3 out of 5 stars One of the better textbooks on American ethnic groups.......2005-04-17

All in all, I'd have to say that this is one of the better textbooks on the market today dealing with American ethnic groups (but that's not really saying much). My biggest critique with such textbooks is that, all to often, they engage in culturalist essentialism. Furthermore, it is often implied that all members of said group behave in this fashion and "practice" this culture. The obvious fallacy of such an approach is that it fails to acknowledge that ethnicity is an emergent (rather than primordial) phenomenon, and that culture changes over time.

American Ethnicity for the most part is a decent textbook for courses focusing on racial and ethnic relations. I still think the best textbook in this area is Martin Marger's "Racial and Ethnic Relations: American and Global Perspectives." However, American Ethnicity is much cheaper in price. The authors employ a power-conflict perspective in their analysis of inter-ethnic conflict; tensions between groups are seen as an outgrowth of competition for access to jobs, education, housing, health care, and other services and institutions. For instructors, the book has an excellent Instructor's Resources CD-Rom, loaded with chapter outlines, multiple choice/essay/true-false quizzes and tests, and a list of films relating to the chapters.

However, there are some key criticisms of this book. Arab Americans are completely omitted, save a few lines about September 11 early in the book. As one of the fastest growing communities in the U.S., I would think textbooks would be inclusive of Arab Americans. Second, I really wish the photographs would be printed in full color, rather than black and white. Third, I would like to see a section on racial and ethnic relations in a few other nations (a la Marger's Racial and Ethnic Relations).

However, if you are looking for a relatively inexpensive textbook for a social science course on racial/ethnic relations, you should consider taking a look at American Ethnicity.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource.......2007-08-08

The 1989 edition still holds up for the most part with the exception of some pre-1999 restoration images such as many of the Botticellis, including the Cestallo Annunciation and Pontormo's frescos from the Capponi Chapel. The architecture and sculpture images are amazing, especially the two page spread of the New Sacristry of San Lorenzo.

2 out of 5 stars Perfect downplay of Italian Renaissance art........2005-11-26

As a coffee table book- it is OK- big and colorful pictures.... Too colorful! For example, a large-scale view of a painting has a black and yellow palette, but the detail is blue and red. As a professional reference- it is as bad as bad could be. No professional artist would ever have their work photographed with flash!!! But in this book there are plenty of those. Paintings have flash spots - unbelievable!
Sculpture pictures are the worst! They look flat - bad photography can damage even Michelangelo!!!! The lighting is all wrong and incoherent.
The only good photos of sculptures are of those that are outside-- in natural light.
If you are looking for quality reproductions of art, you will be surely disappointed. A very ambitious project, but done by dilettanti.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Detail often refered to set.......2005-08-26

This is a stunning two volume set. The amount of detail in both the written word and stunning photographs brings Florentine art to life. The text covers not only the technical aspects of the art and architecture but also the socio-political environment in which the art was created. These discourses can be a little dry but they are enlightening. The photography will certainly recapture ones interest when the text gets a little dull.

5 out of 5 stars A Rare and Treasured Treat.......2004-05-25

Talk about magnificently beautiful! THE ART OF FLORENCE does full justice to its subject -- and it's a lot cheaper than plane fare to Italy.

The last time I was in Italy I witnessed three muggings, one in the Church of Santa Maria Novella, and those experiences were so unnerving that I couldn't fully concentrate on the loveliness of the many treasures before me. I barely remember any of them. So what a delight to discover so many of them in stunning full-color plates, to be enjoyed again and again in the comfort and safety of my own home.

The dual volume book is divided into historical sections of about a generation each in length. Each begins with a lucid account of the history of the city during that period with emphasis on the political, social and economic events that influenced the patronage of art at that time. There are separate accounts of the architecture, sculpute and painting done in each period. A rich and exciting interplay unfolds between the arts, the politics and the social structure of each time period. No wonder Florence was the artistic and political leader for all of Europe during the 13th through 16th centuries.

The authors confine themselves to Florentine artists or those who lived for some time in Florence. References to other artists, when necessary, are minimal. Michaelangelo, for instance, is discussed only in terms of the Dona Madonna, since it is the only painting of his in the city. His limning of the Sistine Chapel in Rome is mentioned only in passing.

These two volumes are special -- so special they'll draw you to the reading chair even when the siren of Spring calls through your window.

5 out of 5 stars A work of art about the art of Florence - a treasure.......2004-01-02

This is one of those books I wish I could give six or even seven starts. This is not only a book about great art; it is itself a beautiful work of art. The care lavished in making this book shows from the beautifully decorated slipcase to the wonderfully textured covers (my kids say they feel furry), to its large format and glorious reproductions. There are many foldouts showing large-scale works in broad sweep and even full-page reproductions of details of works shown in the book.

While the artwork shown is dazzling to the eye and overwhelming to the mind, the articles illuminating the works are first rate as well. One really nice feature of the articles is that there are marginal listings of the plates and figures discussed in each paragraph so it is easy to find text related to the images in which you are interested.

There are two volumes and over 1,300 pages. Volume 1 begins with a brief essay on Florence's prelude to greatness (59 B.C. 0 A.D. 1200). Then the book is organized into sections of varying size: Civic Price and Prosperity (1200 - 1340), An Age of Crisis (1340-1400), Images of a Free Republic (The Early 15th Century), and The Era of Cosimo De' Medici (1430-69). Volume two has: Lorenzo Il Magnifico (1469-92), The End of the Republic (1492-1530, and ends with The Medicean Principate (1530 - c. 1600). Each of these larger sections is organized in the same way - Architecture, then sculpture, and then painting. It is quite fascinating to watch how tastes and techniques evolve over the centuries.

There is also a glossary, bibliography, a section on the photographer and authors, an index and photo credits.

This isn't a book you will likely read from beginning to end. It is almost an ocean you will want to spend time exploring for years in order to take in all that it has to offer. It is almost impossible to not take away something new every time you open its magnificent pages. This is a real treasure for your library. I know is one in mine.
