Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics was published in 1993, just as "Comics Aren't Just for Kids Anymore!" articles were starting to appear and graphic novels were making their way into the mainstream, and it quickly gave the newly respectable medium the theoretical and practical manifesto it needed. With his clear-eyed and approachable analysis--done using the same comics tools he was describing--McCloud quickly gave "sequential art" a language to understand itself. McCloud made the simplest of drawing decisions seem deep with artistic potential.
Thirteen years later, following the Internet evangelizing of Reinventing Comics, McCloud has returned with Making Comics.
Designed as a craftsperson's overview of the drawing and storytelling decisions and possibilities available to comics artists, covering everything from facial expressions and page layout to the choice of tools and story construction, Making Comics, like its predecessors, is also an eye-opening trip behind the scenes of art-making, fascinating for anyone reading comics as well as those making them. Get a sense of the range of his lessons by clicking through to the opening pages of his book, including his (illustrated, of course) table of contents (warning: large file, recommended for high-bandwidth users):
Book Description
Scott McCloud tore down the wall between high and low culture in 1993 with Understanding Comics, a massive comic book about comics, linking the medium to such diverse fields as media theory, movie criticism, and web design. In Reinventing Comics, McCloud took this to the next level, charting twelve different revolutions in how comics are generated, read, and perceived today. Now, in Making Comics, McCloud focuses his analysis on the art form itself, exploring the creation of comics, from the broadest principles to the sharpest details (like how to accentuate a character's facial muscles in order to form the emotion of disgust rather than the emotion of surprise.) And he does all of it in his inimitable voice and through his cartoon stand–in narrator, mixing dry humor and legitimate instruction. McCloud shows his reader how to master the human condition through word and image in a brilliantly minimalistic way. Comic book devotees as well as the most uninitiated will marvel at this journey into a once–underappreciated art form.
Customer Reviews:
Fun to read and very informative.......2007-08-25
I read Understanding Comics and liked it so much I decided to check this book out as well, and found it to be even more enjoyable. McCloud's artwork is very fun and whimsical, his writing is humorous and he puts many concepts about the writing and drawing of comics in very easy-to-understand language. I never thought about making comics before, but this volume was so inspiring I'm convinced it might be fun to try!
A Great Learning Tool.......2007-08-15
If you've ever wondered about the finer points of crafting a comic this is the book for you. This is not a how to draw book and if thats what you are looking for than this isn't for you. It IS a very intelligent and thought provoking insight into the story telling aspects of the creation of comics. This is a MUST HAVE for anyone serious about comics.
Scott McCloud is the Alton Brown of Comics.......2007-08-07
Alton Brown is not a world-class chef but 'Good Eats' is indispensible educational television. It's the same thing with Scott McCloud, reviewers who say he hasn't produced anything earth shaking in the comics medium are missing the point. Making Comics is a wide-ranging, free-wheeling and passionate examination of what makes comics (and much visual art) tick, and provides a toolbox we can use to create our own stories. This is the best thing since Understanding Comics and goes more into the details of visual storytelling, the chapter on facial expressions alone is worth the price of admission. I want to send this book to Edward Tufte. Anyone interested in visual communication needs to read this book, and that goes double for aspiring comics creators.
Must-Have for Aspiring Artists.......2007-07-05
You need to own Understanding Comics to accompany this one. Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art
Making Comics is a complete book that refers to many of the topics that Understanding Comics expands upon. It is a great starting point for aspiring artists to look at approaching their own comic. McCloud explains the mutlitude of styles involved and how each of them works to engage the reader. He is truly a master of his craft.
He strips away the layers of superhero masculine fantasy to reveal comics as a storytelling vehicle. Not your typical how-to-draw book.
Review of book.......2007-05-28
Excellent book - very well presented and detailed. Well worth the price. Our kids (9 and 7) are using it to create better comics

Kind of a disappointment.......2007-03-07
As the title of my review states this book was slightly disappointing. Some of what the authors call "facts" are questionable in my opinion. I was also disappointed that there were no pictures, which might not be an issue for some. Some of the theories come way out of left feild, which are sometimes good for discussion and other times mind boggleing. Since there is no discription for this book I will add some brife facts. This book's information is based on Japan's manga up to the time-skip. So there are definent spoilers for American audiences. So this review has been mostly negative, but I still give it three stars.
Book Description
The enigmatic Sohma family shares a great secret: each member is possessed by spirits of the Chinese Zodiac, and when they are hugged by members of the opposite sex, they transform into their personal Zodiac animal! Tohru Honda, an orphaned high school freshman, is given lodging in the Sohma household in exchange for taking care of household chores. The humble Tohru is quite grateful for the Sohma family's generosity, and the longer she stays with them, the more they realize what a blessing she is in their lives, as well. Designated a top ten manga property by pop-culture watchdogs ICV2, this best-selling series is now a smash-hit anime on Funimation.
Customer Reviews:
only for completists.......2007-09-09
I found "Uncovered" disappointing. Not for the lack of art from the manga (it's unauthorized, after all - see the fine print on the cover), but for failing to uncover much of anything. Personally, I'm OK with spoilers for volumes that aren't yet out in English, but if you're up-to-date with English releases of the manga, you know 95% of this already. You may even find yourself writing corrections in the page margins, as I did. There's at least one significant contradiction - one statement early in the book (Akito is accepted as the zodiac god because Akira said Akito is the god) is completely overturned late in the book (several zodiac Sohmas knew Akito would be born because they shared a dream of meeting their god). It would have been easy to catch and correct, and I'm not impressed.
There isn't a lot here, either. The print is surprisingly large, and there's a good deal of white space on each page - this is a very thin 183 pages. The text lays out basic facts, but offers scant insight or analysis. I expected more, given all the Japanese material that's available; honestly, I'd send people to Wikipedia before I'd recommend this book. To be blunt, I was left with the impression that the authors were assigned to summarize a series they weren't familiar with, and decided to publish their notes. I bought this out of curiosity, but I'd urge people to get the "Fruits Basket Fan Book - Cat -" instead - while it doesn't cover the full series, it's jammed with art, character profiles, summaries, relationship charts, and new material. You'll get a lot more from the "Fan Book" than you'll find in "Uncovered".
Cheap Imitation...not authorized by Hakusensha or Takaya.......2007-08-24
Don't buy this book! Any fan of Fruits Basket could have written this. It is an unauthorized book (part of a series) that reveals no new information. There are no pictures or illustrations (other than shadow outlines) from the series. Mainly it is character profiles and basic explanations, with most of the information seeming to come from the extras sections of the manga.
Also, it also has spoilers!! They don't seem to care that the series hasn't finished yet in English. Don't waste your money. Wait for the official fanbooks from Takaya. They are much better.
My daughter is the judge .......2007-08-15
My daughter is a Fruits Basket fan. She loved this book because it gave her detailed information about her beloved characters.
very informative.......2007-06-17
This book gives answers to some of the questions that we've all probably had every once and a while. It does have spoilers because it was made after the last book was published in Japan (number 23). But if you don't mind being spoiled it is the perfect book for any FB fan. It clears things that you might not have even thought about like why Toru is so polite or why the title on all the books are pink. All in all I was not disapointed and that it was definetly worth the money.

M. Coleman, Miller Place NY.......2006-11-28
.Hack//AI Buster is the first of the two part novels in the large franchise .Hack. The book begins with Albireo, a solo adventurer in the Massively Multiplayer Online game "The World. Lycoris, a bug in the system, is being perused by the Cobalt Knights, a group of selected players sought out to fix bugs in the game what cannot be simply deleted.
Shortly after escaping the Cobalt Knights, Lycoris meets up with Albireo, in which Albireo helps her regain her sight, hearing, and ability to speak which have all been scattered throughout The World. He meets ups and befriends a few bunch, such as Balmung and Orca, a group of Swordmaster adventurers and Hokuto, a novice female Wavemaster.
This book contains epic battles and surprising plot twists, and will entertain any .Hack fan. Be sure to read .Hack//AI Buster 2, and thanks for reading.
younger audience.......2006-10-24
I'm a big fan of the .hack franchise, and this book (along with the "Legend of the Twilight" series) were among my least favorite, perhaps because they targeted a much younger audience. Big fans will still want it because it includes a description of "The One Sin," an event frequently referred to elsewhere in the series; and if you're younger, it's not a bad starting point to get into the franchise.
Casual fans might want to skip this, though, and go straight for the second "AI Buster" book, which is a collection of short stories. (This is a single long story.)
Note that this is NOT manga, it is a text story.
Scion's Say.......2006-10-19
Didn't provide to intensity and focus I came to expect from the anime, but it is alright for being what it is - an attempt to make more money off the fans of the .hack// franchise. I don't know if this book utterly lost it's charm after the translation or if it never had any at all, but like the .hack//Another Birth series is has a shoddy narrative - although I must admit it was better than any of the Another Birth series, so I am forced to give it a 4/5.
Worth my money.......2006-05-22
I didn't know what to expect when I bought this book, i really thought it was a manga. But when it wasn't i still wanted to see what it was about. This book made me want to buy any other volume that comes out like this. Its very good and I would reread it anytime, this book gives a new meaning to adventure.
A great prequel to the .hack story........2005-10-07
This novel is a prequel to the .hack anime, games, and manga. It is set shortly before the anime, Sign, and tells the story of Albireo, a player in very popular online role-playing game The World, and the mysterious AI girl he encounters in a dungeon.
Albireo is a solo adventurer in The World -- he is proud to have gotten his character to a high level playing on his own. One day while playing the game, he encounters a silent little girl in red, Lycoris, who is a NPC (non-player character, or AI). Meeting her activates an event that he is determined to finish. Shortly after, he runs into an annoying newbie player, Hokuto, who knows nothing about the right way to play the game. Alibreo is desperate to get rid of Hokuto, but she blackmails him into playing with her. So Albireo is forced to try to complete the Lycoris event with annoying Hokuto following him around. Along the way he uncovers some surprising truths about how The World really works.
As a fan of the other .hack stories (the games, animes, and manga), I was very glad to see this novel translated into English. It gives a more detailed backstory for the creation of The World and helps set the scene for the events that take place in the later stories. I'd highly recommend this novel to all .hack fans, and if you're new to The World, this is a great book to start with.

Very good and interesting.......2006-05-22
I like this book its very interesting and can get so into the story. Its like you are their yourself and trying your best to what you can and understand. I was very excited to see this volume come out and very happy with the results of buying it. It has alot of adventure and conflict which pulls you in even more to keep reading.
An excellent collection of short stories about the .hack world........2006-02-13
This book is not actually a direct sequel to .hack//AI Buster volume one; it is a collection of five short stories about various characters from AI Buster and another .hack series, Legend of the Twilight. The five stories are:
2nd Character/Haruka Muzuhara's Situation: This story retells the events of AI Buster volume one from the point of view of Hokuto, the annoying amateur wavemaster who followed Albireo around. In this story we find out about Haruka Muzuhara, the woman who plays as Hokuto, and learn that she is not such a newbie after all.
Wotan's Spear: This story is a direct sequal to AI Buster volume one and tells the story of what happened to Alibero after the events of the first novel, how he was changed, and why he left The World.
Kamui: This story tells about Alibero's successor, Kamui, and her own disturbing encounter with a Vagrant AI in The World.
Rumor: This story tells about Rena, one of the main characters of the Legend of the Twilight anime and manga, directly before that story began. This was probably the weakest story in the book because it was too short and not much happened.
Firefly: This story is about Hotaru from Legend of the Twilight. It introduces the player behind the character, and tells about how Hotaru first joined the Japanese server of The World and met Sanjuro.
Overall, this was an excellent collection that gives more depth to many of the characters from The World. I'd recommend it to all .hack fans.

Selected by a former editor of the acclaimed manga magazine Garo and a former editor from Japan's third-largest manga publisher, Shogakukan, this collection of underground comics from the last decade ranges from the beautifully surreal to the graphically gruesome.

Amazing Comics Japan ! ! ! No giant robots.......2001-12-23
This is yet another wonderful collection of strange Japanese Comics. In the same vein as anthologies SAKE JOCK and COMICS UNDERGROUND JAPAN, SECRET COMICS JAPAN is a hearty helping of strange, weird, beautiful and questionable comics.
If you're tired of the pretentious AMerican underground comis that Fantagraphics is publishing, then check out this collection of Japanese gems and take in a refreshing breath of creative air. - JOHN
An interesting look at non-main stream manga.......2001-04-11
A collection of tales ranging from the almost dream-like Swing Shell (a story of a young girl coping with incest) to the bizarre Puntures (a strange look into the copings of modern society). Not every story in this collection, will appeal to everyone and it's definitely not for the kiddies. They will at least challenge any preconcieve notion as to what manga is about and change our views about another culture and perhaps ourselves. I highly recommend this book if only for the story Swing Shell due to its artwork and the way it deals with a very serious topic.

Customer Reviews:
Why this book is good.......2003-01-12
1. The art is simply fantastic. I have never seen an artist able to express feelings or raw emotion or draw an action sequence of a fight so well. If you are one who appreciates art, or pencil art for that matter, Hiroaki Samura is one which you should look at.
2. The fantastic storyline. In "Secrets", which is the 10th book of the Blade of the Immortal series, the plots starts to thicken. Most of the characters have been introduced by now, if you have been following the series, and the story is only going to get darker.
3. This would be a good reason to get the 11th book, Blade of the immortal: beasts.
"What will these hollow men be good for?".......2002-12-18
Due to the accident of the order I read this series in, the last several have been horrendously violent. There can be a certain elegance to the dealing of death, but Hiroaki Samura goes beyond the surface ritual and frequently reminds us that it is not graceful technique, but winning that determines survival. This is an ugly lesson, and Samura never fails to make it clear. In any case, I'd gotten to inured to pieces of people flying all over that I was quite surprised upon reaching 'Secrets' to find the events focused on character development. No doubt, this was intentional on the part of the storyteller, and quite effective.
The book opens upon Anotsu Kagehisa making he was through Kaga on his way to the Shingyoto-Ryu sword school. Its master, Ibane Kensui, has decided to offer the school to Anotsu if he will accept one certain condition. Ibane wants Anotsu to marry Hisoka, his ward. This opens a series of interchanges between Anotsu, Ibane and Hisoka that are quite revealing. Anotsu has actually never been portrayed as an completely evil man, and now we discover that he as some very positive reasons for his actions, nor is he the sort to take thoughtless advantage of Hisoka.
Back in Edo, Manji is recovering (actually, reassembling himself) at Master Sori's painting studio. Sori was the man who originally funded Rin's quest for revenge, and recently Manji has realized that the painter in blood is one of the Shogun's spies. Manji is, as usual, something of an ingrate, and he still cannot bring himself to trust Hyakurin, the woman spy who rescued him from his last disaster. As Manji puzzles this out, he discovers that there will be one more guest at Sori's home, Magatso Taito of the Itto-Ryu, who Manji has fought more than once. In fact, each man thought the other was dead.
Manji discovers that Magatso has left the Itto-Ryu and is searching for the swordsman who killed the woman he loved. Surprisingly, Manji knows the killer as well - Shira, who has a grudge of his own against Manji. The two swordsmen find themselves drawn together against a single enemy. With all this happening, Samura still takes time to show Rin, who is having her own struggles making her way to a showdown in Kaqa.
Taken in total, this is one of the best of the series, reinstating the sense of story line and helping the reader to see some of the characters in a different light. Some mysteries are resolved, and some new questions allowed to surface. This is truly a showpiece of illustration and narrative.
Manji is back!.......2002-10-19
If you loved the other books, this is a key chapter leading up to the long awaited sequal. Its all english, and blood, guts, and glory. From beginning to end,the pieces of the puzzle you read about are falling into place. A must read.
Some of the best manga ever1.......2002-09-08
As with all previous volumes of the Blade of the Immortal series, this is an excellent piece of work; superb art, complex story, wonderfully detailed characters.
Detailed in this volume are Rin's travels -- hard and frustrating, without Manji at her side -- to find Anotsu. Anotsu ascends to take over a remote dojo, but finds himself in a sticky situation when the current master has a request: that he take his daughter as a wife when he takes over the dojo! And of course... Manji mends from his near-fatal (even for the immortal) fight with three of the Itto-Ryu, and discovers that his attempt to get a pass has failed, and that he has a new ally he never expected...
If you're a BotI fan, you can't justify NOT buying this volume! Too much important storyline comes to light here; Manji's limitations, the secrets of the Mugen-Ryu, and the Itto-Ryu's goals... This and more!
Very Good.......2002-08-16
This is a excellent Graphic novel mainly because get to see Rin and Hyaku-Rin semi naked and also Magatsu makes a come back.
