Set by step instructions made it easy for my some to draw his favorite Pokemon characters.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome pokemon drawing book.......2007-05-13

I bought this for my 7 years old daughter because she loves to draw
and also is into Pokemon. The step to step drawing was easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-05-13

I bought this for my son as a reward for doing well in school. He is 9 years old and in the fourth grade. It turns out my 5 year old and 4 year olds both enjoy it immensely, much to the dismay of my son (no girls allowed, lol.)

My son decided to trace the images for a quilt we are making to donate to kids in a loval hospital.

5 out of 5 stars Pokemon Book.......2007-05-13

The step by step instructions is so easy anyone can do it once you practice with it. Once you get the hang of it you will be drawing Pokemon like a pro. This is a really good way to learn to draw some of your favorite Pokemon. I give it an A+++.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to follow directions........2007-05-09

This book was wonderful for my 7 and 5 year olds who are addicted to anything Pokemon. Most of the drawings are quite challenging for a 5 year old, but he was just happy to be drawing something resembling a Pokemon character. I'd definitely recommend. However, it looks like a big thick book but it's only about 30 pages.

1 out of 5 stars total waste of money!!!.......2007-04-07

this book was not helpful at all!!!i had just recently got into manga and anime drawing so i thought that this book would be helpful to me you know with the title being "basics for beginners" and all. all it did was show me useless information.all it does is show you characters made out of these weird rectangle type things only and then the finished project (but thats all no hair no clothes no nothing), instead of step-by-step directions on everything. if you are a beginner i would highly reccomend NOT, i repeat NOT getting this book!!! it confused me and didn't actually show me how to draw anything!!!if your a beginner and don't know where to start, your not alone!!! although this is the first book i ever got on the whole anime subject i would suggest some other how to draw manga books but definately not this one. try how to draw manga ultimate manga lessons volumes 1-6 and more how to draw manga volumes 1-4. believe me if you want, if you think diferently and want to try it any way be my guest but in my oppinion it's a total waste of money!!! hope this helped!!!

1 out of 5 stars tasteless.......2006-06-28

This book tasteless. There are comics in the back of the book where there is a pedophilia scene. A young boy is seduced by a older man. It's not very nice. It also shows how to draw seductivley. This book is not appropriate for young people.

Great book for tweens. My daughter brings it on all of our rode trips and still enjoys it.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2007-01-13

I got this for my 6 year old daughter who loves fairies and mermaids. The art projects are awesome, many different ways to create, each project can take around an hour to do. Some of the projects need parental guidance for her age, delicate tissue paper, cutting tin foil, etc. but the outcome is always amazing and she loves to display her work, which really turns out to look professional. Could this book lead to a career in illustrating childrens book, very probable!
Also recommend "I can draw Animals" by Gibson, that she can do 100% herself with step by step directions.

5 out of 5 stars the Shipping Cost will Get Ya!.......2007-01-10

The item arrived on time and as pictured so I would order from this seller again. But on a side note: Even though the item itself is cheap the shipping will get ya!

2 out of 5 stars a disappointment.......2007-01-08

Sure, they look great in the book, but none of the projects in this book will ever come out looking like the examples. It looks easy, but for little hands the drawings are kinda complicated. I've seen better drawing books for this age group.

Book Description

The foundation for drawing manga begins with the artist copying the works of an admired manga artist. The artist learns the traits of the characters' faces and figures while replicating the eyes, the mouth, and other features and recreating the overall images projected. The first chapter of this volume painstakingly explains the artistic development process beginning with copying professional artists' work to the point where the beginning artist is able to produce his or her own original manga. The second chapter covers the basics of a character's face and body, as well as portraying backgrounds. Chapter Three demonstrates how characters from professional manga artists' work are portrayed.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Perfect For Begginer Manga Artist.......2007-03-07

This was my very firt book my daddy bought me and let me tell you, he made a smart decision on buying How To Draw Manga: Ultimate Manga Lessons! This book is great for the basics of Manga.

My personal favorite was the deep detail the author went into when drawing the head. I also liked how the author clearly showed the differences on age of the child, protagonist, younger adult, mother, and an elder.

I would recommend this book to all ages, only one page with minor, let me repeat, MINOR nudity. Overall, this was a pretty great book.

4 out of 5 stars The Good 'n Bad.......2005-11-08

The Good:

Compared to the other How to Draw Manga series, I would say this book was a summary of every book in the series. With multiple artists and varying styles, it offers a beginning artist a definite edge and foundation for drawing manga. Not only does it show a more stylized version of manga, and also shows a more realistic version. This was one of the more useful books for head angles. The heads are a variety of , high, low, and side angles. This is very useful for a beginning artist so that their work doesn't look dull or monotonous.

The Bad:

I somewhat felt a little ripped off when I saw the price for such a small book. Also, it seems as if this book doesn't go deeply into each specific section. It's more of a 'general' help book. For instance, if you want to know more about anatomy, I recommend buying the 'Bodies and Anatomy' book in the How To Draw Manga series. This book is more of a 'overall' book.

In conclusion, I'd recommend buying this book if I was a beginner or intermediate. You can always improve as an artist. Hope you found this helpful.

4 out of 5 stars it's alright.......2005-08-03

okay this is my first review ever so hang in there with me alright? Now I purchesed this book "How to Draw Manga: Ultimate Lessons vol. 1" mainly because I like the other HtDM books and I wanted to see what this had to offer me. When the book came I was expecting it to be as big as the other HtDM books. Boy was I wrong! it was as thick as the others but the hight and with were 'shorter' none the less the content of the book itself prooved to be of some help. The book itself starts off with the begining mini comic or 'manga' if you will then the table of contents, and then the actual material. The first chapter is all about the basics, starting with "practice by starting with copying" then it moves onto how to go and create your own charatures by showing you the basics of drawing (start with a rough general outline of blah blah blah then refine it and add detale blah blah blah). First they start with the head and face the move down to the torso, arms, and legs. In the book they also show examples of expressing emotions, depicting 'cool action poses', a little bit of sceanery, and how to properly hold your drawing tools. IN the book itself it says these are the goals it's trying to teach you:
1) The Basics of Faces
2) Basics of Figures
3) The ABC's of Tools ans Materials
4) Basic Background and Special Effect Techniques
and
5) Producing and Original Draft of Manga

In all it's a pretty helpful book; however it'll do you jack if you don't put it to use.. in other words keep on drawing. The book is only there to help you get ideas on how you may want it to look. It's not going to do it for you, or magically you'll be able to draw "manga" the instant after you read it.

Now I gave it 4 stars because for some reason I felt that it was lacking a little something in it.. other then that it's a great refference book for anyone, not just people who want to draw manga/anime, who wants to improve their drawing technique.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2005-07-15

How to draw Manga: Ultimate Manga Lessons Volume 1 is a good book to start with if you are trying to learn the art of drawing manga. This book covers almost all the basics and helped me alot. It tells you how to use different drawing materials and how to start drawing your own manga. It also showes you the differenses between male and female cheracters. Also as to be acspected in any how to draw manga book there is some mild nudity (but nothing that detailled). So alaround I think this is a very good book to start drawing manga with.-_-

5 out of 5 stars Absoulutely amazing!.......2005-07-03

This is the most amazing drawing book I have ever purchased. This book is extremely helpful, especially towards the end. It shows characters in different poses to help you learn how to draw them. It does suggest in the beginning to copy some of your favorite artists' work. I copied pictures out of my manga books and then tried to do something original, and I have improved greatly! Book Description

Big things really do come in small packages! It is no exaggeration to say that today one cannot discuss Japanese manga techniques without touching on figure stylization methods. This book thoroughly explores this topic, starting with the thought process and techniques used to draw the characters known in Japanese as "chibi." Most English-speaking fans call them "superdeformed," or "SD" for short-those oh-so-cute, smaller-than-life characters who are always stealing scenes in such anime favorites as Chobits, Dragonball, and SD Gundam.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Cute and helpful........2005-11-26

This book goes over the basic stuff like how to do the head, the basics of the body, expressions, the difference between a regular manga charater and a chibi(nother word for Super Deformed charater)ect. Then it goes over the details like making fat people, skinny people, how and when to use chibis in comics,so on. It was a great book besides the fact there were a few naked chibis here and there (thats why I gave it four stars) but still worth buying!

~*~Purin~*~

4 out of 5 stars It was very informative, and nicely done..........2005-08-23

There were many different things that they talked about in this book, all regarding the drawing of 'deformed characters'. I found all that I needed to in this book, although there were some things (like some little 'in the nude' drawings) that made me lose some focus...

5 out of 5 stars SD or Chibi Characters are NOT just Kids' Drawings!.......2005-01-27

Many people think chibi (or SD) characters are a kind of an art (i.e. gag) itself or that it’s so easy to draw, there is no such need for a book on this topic. It is, but chibi characters doesn’t necessary have to be used in gag or parody works; real life mangaka do sometimes use chibi characters in their works to liven up the atmosphere, especially when funny or comical parts are involved. Also, there’re many “secrets” which makes for a highly successful (cute or funny) chibi character. It can therefore be said that chibi characters can be considered an essential part of Manga, unless of course, you plan to do an entirely “serious” manga that doesn’t involve any humor or chibi characters.

This is where this book comes in. Wonderfully organized with many details, hints and tips to drawing a successful and lively chibi character, the book is both engaging and enriching from the beginning to the end. The book first explains the characteristics of chibi characters, before moving on to how to draw chibi characters’ eyes, noses, mouths and even ears. The book also touches on the actions, poses and expressions of chibi characters, and also offers you advices on how to make your character even more Q! (or cute!). Apart from the characters, there’re also tips on deforming other things and props such as background, robots, trees, and even cars! Whew!

Not to forget, there is a special bonus at the back of the book where you can mix and match everything in the face to get your own chibi character’s look and at the same time, hone your skill.

Although it’s mentioned here that the reading level is for ages 9-12, I would like to emphasize again, chibi or super deformed characters doesn’t just mean kids’ drawings or drawings for kids, if you ARE serious about manga drawing, chibi characters is one area you’ll need to work on as well. A highly valuable, constructive and entertaining book; I recommend this book to anyone serious in manga drawing! ^^

5 out of 5 stars about time for book like this to came out.......2004-09-28

Many typical Anime character designs feature heads that are just somewhat larger than would be proprotionally correct. is known as Super-deformed characters, SD for short or Chibi in japanese exagerate this deformation in the goal of appearing cute and funny.Artists often Super Deform characters in order to show an extreme change in the characters' mood. the goal of the animators is always comedic cuteness. Often done at the punchline of a joke for an extra comedic oomph. In this book its cover all the basics you need to know about this japanese style what covers in manga.I give it five stars because there no other book i know cover such a area

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good .......2004-08-11

well This Manga book is not like the other manga books . This kinda like a special editon . Mostly I would recomend it for more avanced Manga Drawers . If you are just a starter I would recommend Geting started. the first book of manga. It really tells you to draw Chibis (really tiny people) . If you are expeting how to draw bodys, and comics or proffional Manga . You don't want get this book . But If you want to learn all about to draw chibis ,(very small or deformed humans) how thier moves , Faces , Eyes ect. But it pretty Good for people who want to draw chibis . Chibis are a different type of Manga . It is not like the drawings in Pokemon , Salior Moon , and Yu-Gi-Oh . Pokemon , Salior Moon , Yu-Gi- Oh are too serious and drama like manga . What this book contains is a manga what is more childesh like and not very serious or dramatic.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but highly specific. .......2006-08-16

The book shows only a few poses for each character, and no specifics on character design. That means that you will only be able to draw each character in 1 or 2 poses, and you will not be able to create pictures on your own (of other poses) unless you have a basic understanding of illustration and anatomy.

4 out of 5 stars Roar!.......2002-09-13

I have 5 volumes of the HOW TO DRAW series and I think this is very good one because it shows a variety of different characters, not just the title hero in different stages... It's a perfect reference book if you want to try your hand at drawing. Beginners will find it a challenge to "copy" a given picture following the step by step instructions. Artists with some experience will find the hints and a glance at the techniques used helpful. I missed Nala, that's my only critic!

4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......1999-03-21

How to Draw The Lion King from Disney is a very helpful guide to the aspiring Disney Animator. I bought it last winter at Disneyland and I couldn't wait to get home and start drawing! The pages are colorful, and the characters' proportions are displayed nicely; a great book. I would recommend buying it from Amazon. -= MG

Book Description

The foundation to drawing a character is the penciled under-drawing. An under-drawing that has somehow gone astray, once penned, ultimately results in artwork that just will not pull together or lacks balance. This volume explains in thorough detail how to handle the pencil, before the pen ever touches the drawing. Using actual examples of how a well or poorly penciled under-drawing can affect the final work, this book passes along many helpful pointers. Use this book to learn the absolute basics of penciled artwork, manga-style!

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction to the basics of Manga art style ! .......2007-08-15

I Got my copy of this book thru amazon,And was really disapointed because they kept delaying the shipping date and had to wait over 2 weeks until it actually got shipped. However the book it-self offers quite alot of potential for learning to design and draw your own Manga charecters it covers many topics on both the realistic and the manga style such as the design of the eyes/Nose/Mouth , Also it was very helpful when it came to Head drawing from all angles in addition to that it also covers drawing the human figure . The only reason why i gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because all the charecters in the book look like from some 80's anime . And i am not that much into that style i love Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's style more it's modern and realistic .

5 out of 5 stars This book is awesome!.......2007-03-17

This book has really helped me figure out how to draw manga step-by-step. I got it for my birthday and I'm always using it. It's got some really great stuff in it, so I would recommend it to anyone who has *some* experience.

3 out of 5 stars It's good, but needs more........2007-02-14

This book had good pictures and examples to help a person draw manga and it's characters, but buy a different book if you are a beginner. This book wasn't very helpful to me, but if you are a good artist already and hope to be reminded to how to draw a few things like the head and body of manga characters, then get this book.

But, I don't really recommend this book because it needs much more pages and helpful pointers.

5 out of 5 stars Super Kawaii book!.......2007-01-04

I knew this book should join the rest of my how to draw arsenal when I first laid my eyes on it! This book is sooo helpful in character drawing, it gives you the run down on different kinds of eyes, hair styles, faces, nose, ears, and the body. Another good thing about this book is that it shows you how the hair should be placed on the head, and how it flows when you are doing a certain action. This book also covers the types of pencils and erasers used for under drawings, and examples of the thickness of each pencil. It also has a small section of kawaii chibi characters! Aww! I would definitely recommend this book for those who want to start off drawing manga. Another plus is that the book doesn't contain any nudity at all. Perfect for those who are offended by nudity.

5 out of 5 stars don't have a clue how to draw manga this is the book you should start with.......2006-02-28

Fantastic, I would say this is the first book anyone interested in drawing manga should buy. I have other manga books, but this one is the best.
