Perfectly balancing grace and spontaneity, Fine Art Flower Photography ensures that none of us will look at (or photograph) flowers the same way again.
Customer Reviews:
Too stylized.......2007-08-28
The pictures in this book are very beautiful, but I was hoping for more discussion of the basics of outdoor nature/flower photography, like lighting and composition. This book spends a great deal of time with mutliple images and zooming and "special effects" which are interesting but not really helpful if you are trying to take better pictures of flowers. Also, it seemed sort of repetetive at times.
WOW....LOVE IT.......2007-06-08
Cool...abstract photography. Clear pictures, great as a table book or as a useful 'textbook.' Pleasure to look at; pleasure to read. Well worth it!
Dont learn to photograph flowers here........2007-03-25
Don't think that you will learn to photograph flowers with this book.
If you want to learn this, it is not for you.
If you want a beautifull book to look at, with good photos, it is for you.
Tony Sweet delivers .......2007-03-16
Excellant. Has helped me to better understanding of technique, and I am already producing better results with my photograghy
An Impressive Portfolio.......2007-03-10
Tony Sweet is an accomplished nature photographer.
This is a colorful and inspiring collection of close up photographs.
Sweet uses medium to long lenses with warming filters to produce delicately focused images with silky smooth bokeh.
You'll never look at your garden in the same way - a real gem of a book.

The Best Book on Color for Oil--Ever!!!.......2005-01-01
I have read and purchased all kinds of books on color, painting, how-to's etc. This book is the best, and not just a technical book. The book is a masterwork in the sense of presentation of material and information.
The author has a no-nonsense wit and gets right to the point with things it usually takes years of frustration to learn. He makes color part of understanding your art, part of composition and perspective, painterly expression--but explained in the most simple language. He goes into brush strokes, reflected color, properties of paint and in a beautiful way as he shows it through examples of master painters. He shows many paintings and then close-ups in order to see the technique and he tells you what the artist did and how it works.
Basically, it is a completely interesting book that will captivate you and you'll lose yourself. It has things you don't find in other books unless you spend a fortune and wade through a tome of useless info to get to a few good points. This book is the real thing and I highly recommend it.
worth its weight in gold.......2002-01-04
I find Wendon Blake's book to be a necessity for any serious beginner. It is well-organized and easy to read.
W.B. clearly describes how to analyze the hues of the nature, choose and mix the correct pigmentation, how to lighten, darken and intensify paints, how to get maximum effect with limited palette (many great painters of the past used only four or five colors), how to observe local and atmospheric colors, etc...
In addition, "Creative Color" includes numerous reproductions (paintings of Homer, Cassatt, Sargent, Whistler, Twatchman, and other artists). In that part of book Blake explains how these famous painters put into practice the principles described in the text.
To keep it short - this very reasonable priced book is full of practical advice and valuable tips. One of the best "how-to" books on painting I have read.
Excellent example illustrations and clear instruction.......2000-04-01
This book is a little like two books in one. Between every two pages of text (instructions and theory about mixing colors with b/w illustrations), come two color full-color paintings, reproduced in two sizes -- one to fit the whole image on the page, and another closer view of the parts of the painting that the author describes. All of the paintings come from American artists, both famous and not so famous, who paint a variety of subjects, such as landscapes, portraits, etc., in a variety of styles. The author points out color theory and effective use of color in all the paintings. (I really look at paintings differently now. Some paintings that seemed full of many colors actually contain a fairly limited palette.)
The author also gives useful exercises on mixing colors and describes how different techniques of applying paint influence the color intensity (for example brushes vs. palette knife). The author also discusses the palettes used master painters to get a variety of skin tones, and palettes for other purposes, such as landscape paintings.
This is a great book!

Good color and composition course for quilters.......2006-04-02
I took a basic color and design class at a community college about a decade ago. We worked through similiar exercises to those in this book, but with paper, not with fabric as in this book. If you have wanted to take a basic color and design class at a college but don't have the time or resources, this is an excellent book. The only thing I like better about the college class is that you have a real person demanding your homework!
Improve your skills.......2005-10-11
If you hated homework you won't like this book, but if you are willing to follow the instructions and trust the authors to lead you to new skills, you will come away from the lessons in this book with a better understanding of drawing and coloring ways to add to your personal style of making art quilts. I will do this and look forward to the experience!

This book will get you PUNCHY!.......2003-05-10
I have enjoyed paper crafts for some time now, but one thing I thought I would avoid is using punches. I thought that they may be complicated to work with or I didn't know how to get mroe out of them. This book is SUPER about showing all sorts of ways to decorate with punches. My favorite feature is "One Punch" pages, where a single punch is shown used several different ways. A must buy for paper crafters!
Time consuming projects!.......2003-04-10
I love Volume 1 of this series. It has simple, easy to create products. This volume contains much more time intensive projects. Even my avid scrapbook buddies agree that this book is definately not as good as the first one.

I also own almost every punch art book available on the market. In my opinion, Punch Your Art Out 3 offers more quality and useful content than any punch art book published yet. The book contains great information, beautiful and vibrant pictures, and examples which are exciting and easy to follow. This book is worth so much more than I paid for it. It is definitely a keeper. I just can't seem to stop picking it up and looking at it over and over!

Best All-Time Tips for Quilters
ASIN: 1579541917 |
Amazon.com
Quilters of all skill levels and aficionados of every technique are united in their love of fabric. Every quilter has a fabric stash that continues to grow. Yet the choices can become overwhelming, and even experienced quilters may sometimes be stymied when planning the next quilt. This superb guide solves the problem. Whether you like piecework or appliqué, subtle colors or wild, traditional or contemporary, you'll find specific solutions as well as general inspiration in these cleanly designed, very readable pages.
Chapters cover various quilting approaches--decorator's, fabric lover's, single-color, print-heavy, and many more--plus topics like color value, adding dimension, and painting your own fabric. The ideas are presented basically as large tip boxes, each supported by a clear color photo. So, for instance, when we read about choosing accent color, we see a quilt block that effectively demonstrates its use; when we ponder how to find a color scheme to complement a room, we learn to begin with a chosen object (in this case, an heirloom porcelain dish) and build a palette around it. The margins are full of helpful hints (if you're a hand quilter, for example, take some needles along to the fabric store to see how a particular material handles), and scattered throughout is "the quilter's problem solver": a page full of practical advice on everything from cataloging your fabric collection to starting a round robin quilt with friends. Beginners will find this guide invaluable; more accomplished quilters may already know much of the information but can still benefit from the fresh perspectives offered here. --Amy Handy
Book Description
Achieve color success in every quilt you make! This book will give you the know-how and the confidence to make just the right choices for your very next quilt, with more than 250 color photographs and expert advice from the pros. You'll discover how to do more with a favorite palette, and you'll be challenged to try something completely new and exciting.
Here's a sampling of what you'll learn:
* How to make one-of-a-kind quilts and add texture with novel fabrics
* Ways to convey emotion and mood with color
* Why value can often be more important than color
* Ideas that will change the way you make scrap quilts forever
* Fun and easy techniques to design your own fabrics
* Trade secrets for decorating with quilts
And so much more!
The perfect book for fabric lovers!

GOOD BOOK!!!!!.......2005-09-15
Beautiful pictures, solid information for quilters. Dependable information. Quilting is to Art what playing the cello is to playing the trumpet. Very, very different. This book is about the use of color in quilting. I like the chapter on one color quilts and two color quilts. This sort of thing is never found in Art books. Strongly reccomend this book for your reference shelf.

Better ways to spend your money.......2007-07-15
COLOR HARMONY WORKBOOK is one of the most disappointing purchases in recent history. You would be better off with a five-dollar Colorwheel or using the Live Color feature in Adobe Illustrator CS3.
Separated into ambiguously named sections like "Romantic," "Earthy" and "Welcoming," this book depicts photographs of interior design and/or paintings. It then samples the colors and presents them in monochromatic, tertiary, complementary, analogous, and split complementary pallets. Most of the suggested combinations are very vibrant or Avant Garde. On page 32 there is a photo of a room with bright orange walls, light beige cushions surrounded by tan wicker and dark green accents. When you get past the monochromatic colors as depicted on page 25, some unrealistic combinations emerge.
Perforated color combinations appear on each page -- allowing you to go hunting through some of the most awful non-returnable paint available. To be fair, not all combinations are bad. Just consider, you can pick up swatch books with interior photographs for free from you local paint store.
Color Combinations with swatches.......2006-12-12
This book begins with a presentation of 96 colors in a color wheel and then explores color combinations based on these 96 colors, plus grey which is added at the end.
The colors are divided in 22 groupings, according to the effect the colors would have: powerful, rich, romantic, vital, earthy, friendly, soft, welcoming, moving, elegant, fresh, traditional, refreshing, tropical, classic, dependable, calm, regal, magical, energetic, subdued, and professional.
Each grouping is represented with a particular color, containing a brief description of that color and its effect, and followed by color combinations which are sorted into monochromatic, primary, complimentary, analogous, split complimentary, split, clash, and neutral. These color combinationas are provided in two formats - one that would remain in the book and another one consisting out of swatches, which can be taken out of the book.
At the end of the book are given CMYK values of 96 colors, plus 10 consisting of white, black and the nuances of grey.
All in all, the book is very well organized.
This book is a staple.......2006-08-28
As a web designer, I have found this book to be invaluable. I am on my 3rd copy of this book (my other copies met with a strange demise). Each time I need to buy a new Color Harmony book I search for others but come back to this one. It is a great primer for color combinations and how they can create different moods. It also has hundreds of different examples of combinations and does a decent job of explaining color theory. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to use color with the confidence that comes from understanding how colors work to convey a mood/message.
Amazing tool!.......2006-08-08
I saw this book at a friend's house and instantly fell inlove with it. As an upcoming Graphic Designer this book just opened my eyes to a bunch of new ways to use color in my designs and especially in the enviorment that they usually have to be presented in; this enhances the impact your design might have on the customer and still be totally correct for the theme you're looking for.
This is also a great way for artists to give a better atmosphere to their pictures or to simply expand their personal palette when they work on a piece.
Overall I think this book is a must have for artists and designers alike because it teaches you to work with color like the powerful tool that it is.
Great book.......2004-09-13
This is a great book for figuring out which colors go best with each other, however it's not really a "workbook" per se. Although I was a little disapponted about that, I'll still give this book 5 stars because the color combinations are spectacular.

Got a problem with grout? Open The Complete Photo Guide to Home Repair (to page 98) and watch your tiling worries dissolve before the simple beauty of photography. Black & Decker has anticipated your every question and problem with interior, exterior, and home systems repairs, and detailed the solutions in just over 500 pages. In no other human endeavor is a visual guide so important as home repair (well, maybe brain surgery), so this is a crucial aid to the handyperson. Easy-to-find sections on floors, insulation, roofing, chimneys, water heaters, wall switches, air conditioning, and much more are well-designed, brilliantly illustrated, and carefully outlined with step-by-step instructions from masters. The photos in particular are extremely valuable, offering many different views (sometimes even exploded) of the operation in question, and always showing just enough to communicate without overwhelming the reader with too much detail. These alone would be worth the price of the book, but the written explanations and instructions are also very helpful, offering tools, materials lists, and hints that wouldn't occur to the amateur. The book finishes with a maintenance schedule to help you keep repairs from becoming serious, and the end papers have conversion charts and tables that you'll use time and again. If you can't have Norm the master carpenter over to help you fix your old house, The Complete Photo Guide to Home Repair is the next best thing. --Rob Lightner

Outstanding guide.......2007-09-13
I'm in the process of looking for my first home, and I bought this book knowing that I'd need to do repairs as a homeowner. I got more than I had asked for. The text is very clear, and the pictures are precise and thorough.
Not only do I feel more prepared to make my own home repairs after this book, but it has also helped me to spot problem areas within the homes I've looked at. If you're looking for one book that's got it all, BUY THIS BOOK!
Great Book.......2007-07-22
Absolutely wonderful book with endless projects. I have yet to do a project that was not in this book. It is like an unabridged dictionary for home repair.
Never Received.......2007-05-28
This product was never delivered so I am very upset. I was charged for it but it was never delivered so I have to say I am very, very angry at Amazon for this inconvenience - especially since it was ordered as a gift for a very special person.

This is a good book for those do-it-yourselfers that like photos with their instructions. It covers a wide variety of general repairs and would be good for a novice to home repair
Good book.......2007-05-02
Its a great book to give you ideas for how to fix things or how to make general home improvements.

Customer Reviews:
Looking for better guidelines for use of color.......2007-05-18
Overwhelmed with color combos, but not effective guidelines for combining.
Made for Japanese artists? .......2006-12-12
The primary target audience for this books seems to have been Japanese, with Westerners as an afterthought.
The books does contain hundreds of color combinations, but throughout the book the 61 colors used to form different combinations are identified according to the Dai Nippon Inc Color (DIC) System.
The book also contains swatches in 61 colors, which you can cut out with scissors, and which are on the back also identified according to DIC system.
At the end of the book there is a conversion chart, where you can find what color in DIC system correspondes to what color in CMYK, but it is way less convenient that using color combination books like Color Harmony Workbook by Lisa Sawahata, which I have found to be infinitely better and much more practical and user-friendly for Westerners.
Hard to use.......2006-03-25
This book has some decent information, but using the colors in the book is made ridiculously difficult by the color chart at the end of the book. First, if a value is a zero, they put nothing at all. This makes it difficult for your eye to trace the line of numbers for your color. Second, though the colors are given in CMYK, they are given in the order YMCK. This means to enter the color into Photoshop or another image program, you have to start with the third number, read back to the first, then jump to the last. It's not brain surgery, but much more difficult than it should be.
Resource for Color Combinations.......2006-01-13
This book is a great tool for finding color combinations. It contains small samples of 2, 3, and 4-color combinations. At the bottom of each combination page is a tip for using colors together. My only quibble is that the samples are VERY small, probably because the footprint of the book is also small.
Recommended for getting ideas on color.

Book Description
A bold collection of creative pieces and theoretical essays by women of color. New thought and new dialogue: a book that will teach in the most multiple sense of that word: a book that will be of lasting value to many diverse communities of women as well as to students from those communities. The authors explore a full spectrum of present concerns in over seventy pieces that vary from writing by new talents to published pieces by Audre Lorde, Joy Harjo, Norma Alarcon and Trinh T. Minh-ha.
"At one level or another, all the work in the collection seeks to find ways to understand and articulate our multiple identities and senses of placeâ¦.Making Face/Making Soul is an exciting collection of dynamic, important writings that all women of color and white feminists will learn from, enjoy, and return to again and again and again."-Sojourner
"...the pieces are stunning in what they risk and reveal..."-The San Francisco Chronicle
Customer Reviews:
another classic in women of color feminist theory.......2001-05-13
I have read & re-read essays in this volume over and over again. I think of this as among those texts that remind me there are those who went before me--and that the struggle for recognition is not over. Among the key texts here are Sandoval's essay on racism & feminism, a report based on a real conflict that took place in the NWSA and Alarcón's pathbreaking essay on Chicana subjectivity. But there are so many others as well...my main critique is that the anthology is not as representative as it could be with a leaning towards the "Santa Cruz circle"--and yet the truth of the matter is that there was an incredible grouping of women of color studying & writing there in the mid to late 1980s!
