I looooooove this book!!!!!!! by horse crazy- Sus N........2006-11-09
This book got me a reputation at school for drawing the best horses!!!!!!!! This book is great, but however is probably not for the people at the less advanced level in drawing. since i an an art- crazy (and horse-crazy!) freak, everything turned out good when i drew it. So if you did get this book, keep trying, like I did, your picture will eventually turn out!!!!! I gauranteee you!!!!
WARNING: if you are a person who gets frustrated easily, or if you are a person who is not very patient, this book will not come in easy for you!!!!Otherwise, this is a must-have for all horse and art freaks!
Teen horse lovers will love this!.......2006-07-06
I just received this book and started on it right away. I thought this would take forever to do but with a little practice I was doing great. I highly suggest this book for advanced artists and the age of 9 and up. This book offers a variety or horses to draw including close-up pictures. If you know your circles and lines you could do this! Also, you only do good if you start out by reading the instructions in the front of the book. You'll want hints. I did good so you will too!

Book Description
My Pony Written and illustrated by Susan Jeffers I want a pony. I want a pony more than anything in the world. At the heart of Susan Jeffers's exquisite picture book lies the idea that in her imagination, a child can journey anywhere and do anything-even fly through the stars on her very own pony. Susan Jeffers, an avid equestrian and horse owner, effortlessly captures the grace and magic of horses in this luminous children's picture book. My Pony is a landmark book in Ms. Jeffers's career, for not only is it the first book she's both written and illustrated, but it is also inspired by her own experiences as a young girl who wished for a pony and channeled that desire onto paper. Ms.Jeffers is a New York Times best-selling artist. She was a Caldecott Honor recipient for Three Jovial Huntsmen, she illustrated Love Songs of the Little Bear by Margaret Wise Brown, and continues to illustrate the best-selling McDuff series by Rosemary Wells

Cute pony book.......2007-01-12
My girls LOVE horses. This is a really cute book, with great pictures about a little girl and how she loves ponies. It's totally worth it!
My Pony.......2006-03-25
This is a wonderful story perfect for your imaginative little ones. It took me back to my childhood and all the imagining and pretending I did as a little girl. My children were enraptured. I did not give it a five b/c they have not asked me to read it over and over. I think you have to be in a special mood for this story. Great at bedtime! Great for the little girl or boy who dreams of horses or loves animals.
For every girl who has asked for a horse..........2006-02-08
The is a wonderful book for children who want their own horse and must live with the realization that they can't have one... but it is always nice to dream.
All Time Favorite.......2005-11-11
This has become a book for our special collection-my daughter received it for Christmas at age 4 & still loves it a year later. The illustrations are truly beautiful (as are all of Susan Jeffers illustrated books), and the story is sweet & appropriate for young kids (I'd say 10 and under). It's a story about a young girl who wants a pony, and draws & dreams up her own.
What child doesn't love ponies?.......2005-08-02
A beautifully illustrated book and heart-warming story any child would love. A "keeper".

Customer Reviews:
disappointing.......2007-04-05
For those of you who were ecstatic with this book, I'm glad you found it helpful. Really. I am. But as for me, I will not be able to sleep tonight unless I tell you right now--there are better books out there. Do NOT spend your hard earned dollars (or your parents' hard earned dollars) on this book unless you have done some comparison shopping, or are otherwise convinced I am a rambling crackhead. That having been said.
I thought the artist's drawings were juvenile at best, as she tends to focus entirely on shading, and gives little thought to representing the horse's correct anatomical structure. I'm not talking nitty-gritty details, I'm talking glaring faults that anyone familiar with horses would find offensive. Granted, there are a few exceptions, but on the whole, even with the acceptable drawings, they're not what I would call inspiring, and certainly nothing I would expect to see in a published work. In particular, I found it unprofessional how she glossed over the hooves and lower legs in her drawings--they appeared sloppy and in some cases, horribly innacurate. I don't know if she felt like these details weren't worth her time or what, but I'm telling all of you aspiring artists, attention to detail is one of those dividing lines between a merely acceptable drawing and something outstanding. No matter how pretty your horse's mane, tail, eyes [ie, more exciting features] are, if its hooves and legs are shoddy and sloppy, people will recognize you as the fraud you are. Spend some time and learn how to draw the features accurately.
Now I realize that this has turned out to be a rather [long] caustic attack on the artist, and probably not very popular, because nobody likes reviews that say mean things. But I don't have anything against Hammond personally--I've seen some of her paintings of humans, and they're not bad. But equine art is a speciality all its own, and for artists unfamiliar with horses to think that drawing a horse is as simple as looking at a photo--it's not. So no matter how talented the author may be in other fields, she has by no means convinced me that she is an authority on drawing horses.
[As a side note, I did find the section on shading techniques--something common to nearly all aspects of art-- to be useful, and for that reason I never returned the book.]
Learn from my mistake. Check out a copy from the library or something, but don't feel like your life will be incomplete without it. Do yourself a favor--and I don't care if you just learned what a horse was or have been drawing for years--get something more comprehensive than this. You want to learn from an experienced artist.
btw, If you're looking for a reliable resource for your horse-drawing endeavors (presumably), I suggest Jack Hamm's How to Draw Animals(I like the section on anatomical proportions), and Sam Savitt's Draw Horses With Sam Savitt (I like the whole thing--Savitt is a brilliant artist). I've had Hamm's book for years, and my only regret with Savitt's is that I didn't get it sooner. Trust me, you can't go wrong with these books.
I reaaaaalllly hope this helps.
Great Resource!.......2006-09-22
This book was very helpful to me, now I am drawing horses I've never imagined I'd draw. This book helps with shading (alot!) and many little details, such as how to fade the eye at one end. It helps with bigger issues as well, such as the entire face of the horse. This book will completley transform your drawing skills, from what may be a scribbly outline, to a unimaginably life-like horse.
Thanks so much Lee Hammond. You are really a master.
Lots missing from this book.......2005-10-18
I think this would be a great book for a child or someone who wants to draw horses but does not know much about drawing in general. There are step by step instructions for drawing standing, untacked horses in pencil. The major strength of the book is that it shows how to use soft pencil and blending tortillions to create realistic shading effects. Major deficits include no information whatsoever on gaits and other types of movement, almost no anatomical information, very little on breed differences, and nothing on tack. The dozen equine pages in Jack Hamm's How to Draw Animals does a much better job with these essential topics. The author recommends that the student draw from photos - I didn't need a book to tell me that. If your photo doesn't depict your subject in the position you want, this book won't be much help. Also, if your favorite medium is anything other than pencil, this book is not for you. Having said all this, the pictures I drew from the instructions were definitely better than anything I had drawn previously. So I don't regret buying it, but I wish it had been more comprehensive.
Horses for all.......2005-10-09
This horse drawing book is great for the pre-teen who wants to draw realistic horses. Easy to follow directions and loads of pointers from a master. It was just the book for one of my students. She went from flat looking steeds to very realistic animals in a matter of two weeks.
Draw Horses (Discover Drawing Series).......2005-09-28
J'ai aimé, mais beaucoup à traduire avec l'ordinateur, ce serait mieux en Français, c'est en tout cas mon point de vue. Merci.

Excellent drawing book.......2007-01-18
We got our daughter this book for Christmas because she loves horseback riding and she loves it. She is 8 years old and it has already improved her drawing in the short time whe has had the book. I would highly recommend!!
Hmmm.......2006-06-12
Drawing Horses is a very, erm, basic book about well, how to draw horses. The horses aren't very realistic, and the shading method it teaches isn't very good (cross-hatching, dots, etc.). Maybe good for the absolute beginning artist, but maybe to easy for the more advanced.
Great!.......2003-12-05
My 10 year old daughter chose this book, and she loves it! The author's review is very accurate. Kids of different skill levels of drawing will enjoy this book and get a lot out of it. Mine is not an artistically "gifted" child - but she is happy with her new ability to make her drawings look like horses! Children who love to draw and will spend a lot of time on a drawing will appreciate ALL the wonderful tips and hints to draw and style the horses. The format is friendly - and even if she doesn't "do" all the details herself (the different braided manes, pairings of horses etc) mine LOVES looking at the pictures and having the simple and clear explanations. Highly reccomended!
Finally, a "Drawing Horses" book for young skill levels!.......2002-08-27
Hi, I'm the author, and I wanted to share with you why I wrote this book. All the "drawing horses" books I've ever seen are full of great looking pictures of horses. The drawings would look fantastic in an art class or museum. However, it's tough for kids to draw at that level, and it can be very discouraging. I know, because I've been teaching cartooning and art classes for children for many years.
So, I applied the simple, common-sense techniques I developed as a cartoonist and teacher, and came up with "Drawing Horses That Look Real." There are step-by-step instructions from muzzle to tail, and my special cartooning secrets are outlined in a fun format that kids can master quickly. The book speaks directly to the reader, and nothing is left to chance. Most of all, the level of drawing is just right for kids, and can be enjoyed by anyone with patience and practice! I hope that many kids who love these fine animals will also love my book.

Not that great... :-(.......2005-06-05
This tells you almost nothing about drawing horses!!!!!!!
The body structure in this book is wrong, they create colours that have never been horse colours, and make the horse look all bendy with no proper joints!
This should be given a 2 star, and if you really want something to teach you, get either The Usborne Compeate Book Of Drawing or Draw Horses, or maybe even Draw 50 horses
Fantastic Job!.......2004-12-12
If you love horses and have always wanted to learn to draw them, now is your chance! Levin takes you step-by-step through developing an image, a character if you will, that is not only recognizable, but something to be proud of.

A precious gift for any horse lover.......1999-03-27
I have bought five copies of this lovely art book. Each one I have ended up giving as a special gift to a horse lover. I am ordering one as a wedding gift now...that will make six purchases. Someday, I'll have supplied all those lucky people with one and keep one for myself.
This book is for those who love and understand horses........1998-11-07
Experience this book through your imagination. The illustrations tell more of the story than the written words. This book was given to me by my horse's first veterinarian who knows, that from time to time I need a 'horse fix'. I lost my best friend in '97. This book brings back memories of him. If you show a horse a kind hand, you will have a friend for life and this book proves it.
A horse lover's dream come true!.......1997-07-15
This amazing book arrived today, and I sat down and read it from cover to cover completely, happily transfixed. If you know horses and love them or know a friend who does, give this book to yourself or your friend. The illustrations are simply breathtaking and the text filled with humor, wonder and love

Customer Reviews:
Well............2006-06-17
This book is good,it teaches you how to draw a horse head, but not a horse.....It teaches you to draw lots of diffrent heads and expressions. When she is done she shades it .But does not teach you how, well she does but it is not step by step.It is like a huge step.
[...]
Not ANYONE can do it.Then she says to do SCRIBLES to draw a horse body, huh???A very deteiled head with a ¨Scribled Body¨that is not good! I like most of the book ,just that sometimes she jumps big steps, well too big for us!
Well go ahead and buy it it is not bad, teachs you lots of things, but a body....
What a GREAT start for the budding artist!.......2006-03-13
As the mother of an art student, this book totally broke through the obstacles my daughter was having with her beloved horse hobby. They say artist have the most trouble drawing the things they love the most, but the step-by-step instructions assisted my daughter to break out of her barrier. She uses the basic techniques to help her with her 3D work as well! Thank you!
Practice makes perfect!.......2005-09-30
This book is really good to learn from! I traced a few horse heads, then practiced free hand, and it came out really good! WHen I went onto a body, she drew a bunch of circles, and I was surprised, but I tried it-- it came out so good!! Ofcourse it took practice, but once you clean up the picture, shade it and add a saddle, you'd think this was a real peice of art in a gallery!! I really recomend this book!
Deserves Just That........2005-01-10
I will admit. This is good for teaching you how to draw horse heads. At least the first set of instructions is. I was exicited and thought this would be a great book when I went and drew an excellent, realistic picture of a horse head. I was aiming for arabian but got quarter horse, but I didnt care. It looked great. So I wanted to go on to bodies. And guess what I found Scribbles. Yes, scribbles. She just drew a bunch of circles, saying to go with the energy that you feel. I ddin't bother, and went on to draw another horse head using a different set of instructions I was so disapointed when I was done. The horse looked like something a 9 year old would draw if they grabbed the book. I looked back to the other picture. The other one was in a ocmpleately different class. After this, I tried to draw asaddles and bridles. But they didn't tell you how to draw them. They shpwed pictures of say, a racing saddle, and said trace this onto a horse you previously drew. I wouldn't request buying this book.

How to draw simple.......2007-01-10
This is a great book for the kids who are horse lovers at heart
Good Book.......2005-07-28
My Daughter loves to draw and she loves this book!!! She is 8 and this was perfect would recommend again!!!
Very poor book.......2005-03-11
Since I ordered this for a young budding artist, I was willing to wait awhile until it shipped. What a disappointment - this book is not at all what I expected - I imagine I should have been warned by the price. There is almost no instruction about drawing horses - the pictures are pretty but they will not help in actually learning to draw horses. One star is almost overly generous for a "learning" book.
This is supposed to teach you how to draw?!.......2004-09-07
This book is pathetic. It has almost no instructions, only not-very-realistic horse drawings on each page. If you want a great horse drawing book, check out "Anyone Can Draw Horses." This book uses non-conventional methods, such as sketching the basic skeleton to get the horse's shape correct. It never ONCE tries to make you use circles and other geometric shapes. (I don't know about you, but this never works for me! The drawing just gets disproportionate!) However, if you like the circle method, try "Draw 50 Horses."
A good way to go..........2004-06-18
It's an ok book. The drawings are a bit hard but if you just try, the results are great!

The Anatomy and Action of the Horse (Dover Art Instruction)
ASIN: 0823014193 |
Book Description
The first book to offer in-depth instruction in the art of drawing and painting horses, this study examines the development of time-honored equine art in sporting, portrait, and country life painting.
A gifted specialist shows how line, shape, form, light, color, value, space, and design are applied to drawing and painting the horse. Step-by-step lessons detail equine anatomy, skeletal structure, and musculature; differences among breeds; techniques for quick life sketching versus working from photographs; how to include riders on horseback; and basic landscape settings. Fine examples of contemporary equine painting are included.

Nothing special.......2007-02-04
I am a bit disappointed in this book. It has some diagrams of horse anatomy and movement that are useful, but there's not much in it about painting. I was really hoping for more detail about color and the little things that make horses a challenge to draw and paint. This book would be most useful for the beginner artist, or an artist who isn't familiar with horses.
Good starter book.......2006-07-15
The book provided some basic horse anatomy at a general level appropriate for someone starting out drawing horses. There were many nice illustrations and example paintings provided. The general art instruction on color, materials, etc was a basic primer, nothing new there. I would have found this book much more useful if it had included photos of various breeds of horses (there were none) rather than the provided sketches of just a few samples.
bravo!.......2002-07-08
Great job! I found just what I was looking for in this book. The detail has been very helpful and the examples included are a joy to view. I love it for helping with my painting. My daughter loves it for the works of art by the author and others she has included. Thanks
a beautiful book.......2002-03-20
the art in this book, including that by the author/artist, is worth the price alone. I've not had the chance to try the drawing suggested, but the information offered seems really valuable. Worth having if only for the beautiful pictures of horses.
Great Book for the Basics.......2002-03-09
All beginning artists, not only those who struggle with capturing equine form and movement, would benefit from this book. The chapter on selecting a medium is a particularly good primer on the qualities and characteristics of materials available to the initiate. Equine anatomy is comprehensively discussed, with clear, instructive drawings and interesting anatomical details which may help add realism to artistic renderings. The elementary concepts of equine movement are crisply defined, and the author's advice on the use of color and technique is helpful. Developing equine artists will find the book to be a great resource in refining their skills.
