Better Pages from Better Cropping!.......2007-08-30
I didn't think that Memory Makers would be able to top the original book, "Memory Makers Creative Photo Cropping for Scrapbooks", but they did with this book! Instead of presenting the first book with some slight modifications, Memory Makers generated all new cropping ideas and examples. Both of these books will be of value to anyone who scrapbooks. I guarantee that this is not the same old scrapbook publication.

Great starting place!.......2000-12-01
I first encountered this book in the library and checked it out so many times that I finally gave in and bought my own copy. I've made gifts using the instructions and patterns in this book, and found that the guidelines and levels of difficulty ratings are dead accurate. I've used this book as a springboard to go further into this craft.
One word of advice - I have found origami paper the best suited paper for most of these projects. Regular silhouette paper is hard to come by and expensive. Construction paper is much too thick, hard to cut, and usually not acid-free.
Neat little book, aroused my interest in a new to me craft.......1999-02-21
This is a very nice first book for someone who thinks they might be interested in paper cutting. It reviews different countries approaches to paper cutting. It contains patterns and directions for lots of different projects. Best of all, it has things simple enough to convince you to try the craft out while at the same time including enough complex, exciting projects to fire your imagination. The Polish style was particularly appealing to me and I've ordered 2 books on that type of cutting.
Book Description
Hans Christian Andersen, the Danish storyteller whose fairy tales are known all over the world, was also a gifted artist. He made hundreds, perhaps thousands, of paper cuttings of swans, clowns, toy theaters, windmills, angels, and other whimsical images. Often he made the paper cuttings while telling a story, then gave them to the children listening to him. In this inspired biography, Beth Wagner Brust tells the story of Andersen as an artist who used his many talents to escape the poverty into which he was born and who entertained others with not only his famous stories but also his innovative and original art.

Fascinating Story.......2007-02-06
As a storyteller I love to tell stories by Hans Christian Anderson and was thrilled to find out he was an accomplished cutter of paper. While his paper cuttings are much more intricate than the ones I do when I tell stories, the author helped me to understand that his ability to tell stories while cutting paper is a good way to keep the attention of small children. I found that "Grandma's Magic Scissors" by Linda S. Day was a good book to learn basic paper cutting skills and hope that someday I can learn to cut the intricate designs that this master storyteller cut, although I think I will carry my scissors in a bag and not my boot.
A Delight for All Ages.......2005-11-21
I'm a paper artist who also happens to be a Hans Christian Andersen fan. I bought the book for myself, although it would be a terrific selection for a child who likes to use scissors and glue or who might be interested in the person behind some of their favorite fairy tales. It's hard to find many printed examples outside of Denmark of Hans Christian Andersen's cut paper work. Beth Wagner Brust is a paper cutter herself and brings this enthusiasm to her book. She has performed a great service for Andersen fans and paper cutters of all ages.
This Book Is A Real Treasure.......2005-04-09
Like so many Americans, I had no idea HC Andersen was a paper-cutting genius, until reading the series of articles by Ms. Brust in the LA Times. Not to mention that he cut these "amazing" intricate pieces while telling one of his stories to a roomful of listeners at the same time.
The book's a treasure in that I feel like I've discovered gold within. Not simply a children's book, it's so well written and full of surprises, I think it will appeal to readers of all ages, from the casually curious child or adult to the Andersen enthusiast like me.
Great.......2000-05-24
Not only is the author great (I know her!) but this book explores an interesting topic. Those paper cuttings are unreal! I mean they are real, but they are so amazing!

Creative ideas for experienced and inexperienced card makers.......2000-05-16
As someone who is always looking for new ideas in cardmaking, I found this book to be useful. The cards are easier to make than they appear to be. Some designs are more intricate and may take a bit more time to master. But there is a nice range of projects for cardmakers of all levels.

The simple but beautiful art of paper cutting celebrated in inspirational designs and practical projects.

More for intermediate and advanced crafters.......2003-06-23
I am just starting to make caft projects. I am interested in paper cutting, but I have to say that I am a bit daunted by the intricacy of cutting that is required by almost all of the projects in this book. I think the key is to have the right tools, which are conveniently listed in the book. You really do need several different sized scissors. So, in order to do many of these projects, unless you have already invested in paper cutting tools, you will need to buy some good scissors. Most likely you can't just use what you have around the house. However, an initial outlay of cash is almost always required whenever you begin any handmade craft.
The authors describe basic technqiues, and present a few basic projects, but quickly move to what I would consider more advanced projects. I did enjoy the silhouette and paper flowers projects, which I consider to be two of the easier ones. Furthermore, the authors are good about providing detailed instructions and step-by-step photos. I think as I gain experience, I will attempt more elaborate projects, but I think this book would be best for those who have already mastered the techniques of paper cutting.
Because the book never claimed to be for the beginner, the only reason I took one star off was due to the lack of variety in the style of projects. They seem to be geared toward people who like crafts with a Scandenavian or country feel to the design. However, the cutouts are applied to a variety of objects such as lampshades, tins, place mats, clocks, cards, shelf edging, picture fames, etc.
I think the Waltons do a good job of presenting instructions and providing templates. The only limit is one's experience with paper cutting.
A good book for both newbies and more advanced crafters.......2003-06-16
The Waltons have written a variety of craft and interior decoration books over the years. This book is a great example of their work. They give easy to understand instructions with photos of the projects at every step of the way. They also give templates to photocopy for each of the projects at the end of the book. Although the design style of the projects are primarily country, the techniques can be applied to other styles as well. Projects for all levels of experience are represented. The Waltons start off with a list of basic techniques, equipment, and materials, but move on to more advanced projects later in the book. You will need the different sized scissors listed because some of the projects require intricate cutting. The projects range from embellishing tins to frames to giftbags to cards.

Boredom Buster.......2007-02-06
Any rainy day, sunny day or boring day is a good time to use this book. My kids, especially my son, love to sit down with a pile of paper and scissors and see how many of these patterns they can cut out. When they are done with the patterns they try making some of their own. A good boredom buster, however as a storyteller I find it is a great way to recap the story I tell by cutting out the pattern that goes with the story. When I am done the kids are fascinated when I unfold the pattern and I get lots of oohs and aahs.
Introductory Book.......2006-11-17
The book is an introduction to paper cutting. While some of the templates are more advanced, most are not. Good place to start to learn about paper cutting and realize you can do it. Not such a good book to help you continue learning paper cutting
A wonderful resource for rainy days and other homebound occasions .......2006-06-14
Grandma's Magic Scissors: Paper Cut-ting From A-Z by Linda S. Day (a.k.a. Grandma) is a fun and creative instructional compendium of do-it-yourself projects for creating intricate, beautiful pieces of art with just a sheet of paper, a pencil, and a pair of scissors. Providing young (and not so young!) readers with a "user friendly" introduction to the inexpensive, fun and artistic pastime of fancy paper cutting, Grandma's Magic Scissors carefully guides the reader through cutting out such designs as The Monkeys and the Crocodile; Praying Parents; and Little Red Hen and Chicks, to Mice; Three Billy Goats Gruff; and Hearts with Bunnies. A wonderful resource for rainy days and other homebound occasions (with a bit of judicious adult supervision), Grandma's Magic Scissors is very strongly recommended for all children, but most especially those with an artistic interest searching for an entertaining and creatively inspiring guide through the decorative art of paper cutting and design.
So magical!.......2006-04-26

Customer Reviews:
Blurry.......2005-08-23
This book is terrible. If it wasn't only $5.95 I would return it. The pattern ideas are weak at best from what you can see of them. They are not crisp designs that you can scan or trace but blurry-edged designs that look more like torn paper art.

Not What I Expected.......2007-01-11
This book did not provide the technique as suggested by the title. However, I did get some good ideas from the photos and patterns.
I love this book!.......2006-09-29
I am new to paper cutting but I am a scrapbooker/card maker. This book opened up a whole new world to me!
She gives just simple instructions that make me feel like I can do this - and do this I have! I've used this book over and over and I love her designs and her ideas. I also like that the patterns are easily enlarged if need be on my printer. This makes it easy to fit the paper cutting to the project that I am working on. I highly recommend this book and I hope this author comes out with another soon.
Yes, but............2006-09-27
I mostly agree with the other reviewer said...BUT... I did see that Alison "Highly recommended..." this book in her newest (2007-2008) catalog, so I took a chance. (With a MUCH lower price here.) Ideas are GREAT, techniques are fair, patterns are fuzzy and not actual size. I'm an advanced cutter & I WILL use this book....but it will take some simple doctoring, to make them look as clean and sharp as the pictures in the book. After looking through the book (AND not remembering what I'd paid), I told myself it was worth a MAXIMUM of $15.00, for idea & pattern value. I paid less than that, so I'm satisfied. I give it a 4 and know that a beginner could benefit with the good ideas & simple patterns.
Tips and techniques are sketchy at best.......2006-03-31
This book has some attractive patterns, so, if you're just looking for patterns to blindly copy, it is probably fine. Unfortunately, however, it bills itself as offering tips and techniques -- which are very sketchy at best -- and the Resources don't even include Papercuttings By Alison, which is where 99% of US papercutters purchase their supplies. You would HAVE to own at least one other papercutting book to be able to use this -- which is a darned shame, since it would have been very simple for the author to mention the basic things every papercutter knows about using paper, scissors, knives, etc. If you're going to NAME your book Techniques, you really ought to include as much information as possible. Conversely, if she'd named her book Patterns, it would have been fine. I just wouldn't want anyone to think that this is a standalone book on the subject ... It is a book of patterns, with a few tips included.
