Creating Beautiful Boxes With Inlay Techniques .......2007-07-21
Good tips and beautiful boxes. The directions are sufficient to be able to make the boxes in the book.
Great learning tool.......2007-07-07
The Inlay book is an invaluable resource for beginning woodworkers. Very informative and well written. The author demonstrates methods for using pre-made inlays, as well as providing instructions for making your own inlays. I highly recommend the book. I have all of Doug Stowe's books on box making and enjoy them all.
I shudder to think!.......2006-12-08
The book has some really interesting ideas for boxes. It is definitely worth getting for that reason alone.
This is not a good book for an inexperienced woodworker. Many of the router table techniques shown are incredibly dangerous---I can't believe the author has gotten away with doing things the way he does without losing a few fingers along the way. I shudder to think what might happen to a new woodworker who tries these techniques.
The projects described are somewhat incomplete and quirky. One project, for example, has panel doors---the cutting list contains dimensions for the rails and stiles of the doors, but not the panels. Not a problem for me, since I normally use these things as a source of ideas/inspirations for projects of my own design. But for someone who is looking for a step-by step project guide, this will prove disappointing. As another example, one project mentions using "brainerd hinges"--not a knife hinge, a slot hinge, a quadrant hinge, etc, but a "brainerd hinge". But the author neither shows the hinges in any of the illustrations nor explains them in the text. I was quite puzzled as to just what exactly a "Brainerd Hinge" might be and asked several woodworking buddies. Nobody had any idea. Finally, out of desperation, I "googled" the term "brainerd hinge" and found out that there is a "Brainerd" company that makes hinges. Apparently the author meant a simple butt hinge made by the Brainerd company. The book is full of these quirks and one can either be frustrated at them or view them as part of the book's charm.
One final comment---many of the boxes appealed to my design sense, but some others seemed rather clunky in their proportions. But that's easy enough to change on your own. I say this to stress that the strength of the book is in providing a number of interesting design/construction ideas that can be adapted in many different ways.
Not as in-depth as I hoped.......2002-08-14
I bought this book hoping to cull some ideas for an idea I have for a box with inlay. However, this book is just straight ahead projects. The book does cover other things, like hand made dove tail joints, and making wood inlay - but they weren't as in-depth as I was hoping. If you have a shop full of various power tools and chisels and saws, etc - this book is for you. If you're looking for ideas on box designs/construction, and have a limited set of tools - I wouldn't recommend this one.
Woodwork as art.......2000-10-17
A woodworker with little experience with inlay technique often thinks these beautiful projects are beyond their capabilities. This book takes the mystery out of inlay design with its copious photos and descriptions of work in progress. As a modestly experienced woodworker, I found the projects somewhat challenging, while the end result was truely magnificent. The book is a course in appreciating wood for its natural beauty. The boxes are relatively plain, however the projects represent nature's most beautiful art form. A definite must for any wood library.

Inlay.......2007-05-13
I didn't have any formal background or knowledge of inlay. This book went through the fundamentals and gave good insight on what to start with and little tricks of the trade. I recommend this book for the beginner.
Very amazing work.......2007-04-11
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for exquisite inlays in wood. The pictures worth it, trust me. Good shoots of very nice work, of different styles. The book also cover how to cut pearl (and also other materials) and inlay by your own, showing tools of the trade and sources of drawings and information. Delight it!
An excellent book.......2007-04-01
I originally bought this for a friend for christmas. After having to ask him if I could borrow it all the time I bought my own. It has great pictures and very complete instruction on the process of inlaying. Having done a few pearl inlays on various instruments I found it very useful. As always though..... practise makes perfect...
The Art of Inlay review.......2007-03-30
I received the book and have found it very helpful. I am considering doing my own inlay on a guitar I am making. This will be most helpful.
Beautiful pictures.......2007-02-17
A beautiful display of unbelievable work that few of us would even attempt. Only the basics on "how to". But maybe that's all there is to it; hours and hours of tedium.
Book Description
Inlay is a wonderful way to create flowers, scenes, figures, and other intricate and colorful designs on wood objects--and a great opportunity to work with small quantities of rare and costly woods (also precious metals, leather, mother-of-pearl, and other materials). Today, since veneers and marquetry have come to substitute for inlay, this book helps to carry on the tradition of an almost forgotten art, and shows modern craftspeople how to use it to make plain objects special. Through detailed instructions, diagrams, and photographs, every step in the inlay process unfolds, including a special section on finishing. The spectacular projects feature everything from a pretty floral tray to Christmas ornaments, from a bookstand to a set of nested bowls--even jewelry!

Not a Good Wood Inlay Technique.......2007-07-03
This book has some nice patterns and pictures and for that, I give it 2 stars. But for technique on even the basics of how to inlay, I would have given it a 0.
A good start.......2007-06-26
I have found a lot of needed skills for learning to inlay wood. This book is easy to read, and understand. Good book for someone wanting to learn this art.
Really helpful.......2007-03-16
I'm new to the art of inlay, and this book ended up being just what I needed to get started. I really enjoyed the excellent photos of finished products.
The Art of Wood Inlay .......2006-02-23
A good, common sense way to learn how to use different types of woods and other materials for inlay projects. Inlay is a true art form different from intarsia and marquetry and should be approached as such. I thought the author explained the different techniques such as matching wood grain by dying and scorching very well and gives the reader enough confidence to experiment.
A truly great introductory inlay book!.......2005-12-26
This is a "how to" book on inlay probably best suited to those learning the art. The first 20 pages cover what you need to know to get started. He starts with a discussion of the workspace, safety, woods to use for inlay material, wood grain and how to use it for effect, tools both power and hand, tool sharpening, and patterns--including how to make full sized patterns from those provided in the book. He then goes into the steps required for basic inlay, techniques for making constructs such as a leaf, how to prepare inlay pieces, and finishes with how to repair inlay.
The author then takes you step by step through 24 projects. Each project starts with a materials list, the inlay pattern, instructions on how to make the base item (the finished product less inlay) and finally extensive, detailed instructions on making the inlay. The inlay directions cover grain orientation and the order for performing the inlay.
As an inlay wannabe, I found the book very interesting and quite useful. It has inspired me to try inlay on my next small box project. I give it a 5-star rating!
Book Description
Marquetry is a technique where different natural colors of wood veneers are carefully cut to fit precisely together, creating a spectacular design in a single sheet or picture. In the mid 16th century, Italian craftsmen began using marquetry as a furniture decorating art. Hundreds of color photographs demonstrate in detail how to saw your own veneers out of solid wood planks, the tools and materials required, using the scroll saw and the fret saw, choosing woods for color and grain, design tips, shading with hot sand, and finishing. Four patterns ranging from simple to challenging projects are included as is an extended gallery of finished works to inspire the marquetarian in you., 400+ color photos, 4 patterns, gallery, 8 1/2" x 11"

An excellent, inspiring and non-threatening first book........2004-12-20
My wife made a terrible mistake one day and went with me to my local woodworking store. Bored, she sat in the book section and found this book. The next thing I know she is so excited about doing inlay work she is carrying the book around everywhere and studying every page over and over. She is asking me how well I can plane wood or if I can make veneers. (She didn't even know what planning or veneer was before.) She did her own research on the tools required. I was stunned! My wife interested in tools! :o)
The projects in this book generally follow the simple, understated Japanese. A style my wife greatly admires.
The book is full of illustrations detailing every step in the four main project presented. With eight to 12 photos per page, the projects details are presented as captions to the step by step photos. It is well organized and covers using scroll saws as well as hand fret saws.
Some may find some of photos that go along with the project a bit redundant, repeated from a previous project. I find this duplication *very* helpful and useful. Each project stands on it's own.
Frankly, I thought inlay work was a bit beyond me. I might have the patience to do 10 dovetail drawers at one sitting, but I didn't think I could ever do this. This book changed that. The techniques are presented in make anyone feel they can do real art. My wife and I "fight" for space in our shop now and I am incorporating her marquetry into my, er, our furniture projects.
I only gave it four stars because I felt that it could have done a better job introducing the tools at the beginning. If half stars were available on this rating I would give it 4 1/2. A good scroll saw book would be a good companion.
Book Description
Intarsia refers to the ancient art of wooden mosaics-making pictures in wood. The authors have taken this art form and adapted it for today's woodworker. Using easily available woods and common woodworking tools such as scroll and band saws, the average woodworker can produce beautiful wooden reliefs through step-by-step instruction. The included patterns range from large, majestic portraits and murals to small jewel-like mosaics. Full-color photographs illustrate the beautiful and intricate work possible in the realm of intarsia.
Customer Reviews:
Good start for the Newbie.......2006-03-08
If you are just starting in Intarsia, as am I, this is a good reference to get some knowledge of the art and how to get rolling - or sawing as the case may be. The step-by-step description of a first project gives one more information than some need, but it certainly gives insight to the detail and proceedure required. The patterns included in the book will get you started in fine fashion.
Good, but misleading cover.......2004-02-28
I am just learning the art of intarsia, and this book had some helpful information. However, I was quite disappointed that none of the patterns in the book are for the pieces on the back cover (does and fawn, rearing horse, duck)- only the front cover patterns are included.
Lost in the woods.......2000-08-25
As I became lost in the art of intarsia, this book was my map. Completely unknown to the craft, I purchased this book as a way to beat my summer bordom. As I opened each page, a swirl of thoughts came to me, and I immediately made plans to visit the local hardwood retailer to start my first project. But where to start? This book has the most wonderful design ideas, from beginner to advanced, even I was impressed with the works I had done. You can make each project over and over, because the wood you use is always different. I would recomend this book highly to anyone slightly interested in the art and history and creativity of intarsia.

Book Description
Marquetry, also called intarsia or inlay, is the art of creating intricate pictures and designs on furniture by skillfully cutting and fitting together thin pieces of colored wood, horn, metal, shell, and other precious materials. While this highly specialized art has its roots in ancient
times, it was popularized in the eighteenth century in France and today remains centered in Paris. This three-volume set-originally published in French and now available for the first time in English-is the most comprehensive examination to date of the techniques used by expert marqueters in
creating their exquisite masterpieces.
Masterpieces of Marquetry offers a detailed history of the medium from antiquity to the present day, illustrated with examples from the collections of museums around the world, and includes the masterpieces of some of the greatest cabinetmakers and marqueters in history. Methodically organized and
lavishly illustrated, this set is an invaluable resource for art historians, antique collectors, and dealers, as well as contemporary fine furniture makers.

Groundbreaking; extraordinary........2005-06-21
This book should have been entitled, "Advanced Laminated Designs in Wood." This is no easy book, but that is not the fault of the author- the subject matter itself is difficult. However, the author spared no effort to convey this method of woodworking, and if the reader is willing to take the time needed to grasp it, he/she will reap considerable rewards. I love the book, and I highly recommend it.
All the methodology is clearly layed out, with numerous pictures and illustrations of how to create these designs. The designs themselves are beautiful and so variable, you could make them for years without ever repeating the same pattern.
I should note that this method results in considerable amounts of wood turned into dust and scrap. You will also have to construct an elaborate (though very useful) cutting sled for your table saw. And at times the book reads like a college text, although the author is a very capable writer.
That being said, I still highly recommend the book to serious artists and woodworkers who use inlay, intarsia, marquetry, or do segmented turning.
Deep, but Thorough.......2002-02-16
This book is so complete with jigs that are necessary to do the exact cutting required for good results that some woodworkers may not appreciate it. It has all the formulae to calculate the amount of lumber required for a project. If the woodworker has the patience to read this book and follow the design instruction, then experiment with different widths and numbers of the laminates, the possibilities are unending. Clarence Rannefeld, the author, has tried to introduce us to a whole new field in woodworking. Use your scientific calculator for the formulae, then cut and glue, and cut and glue some more and beauty will jump out at you. Above all, be patient. This type of woodworking is an art. Intarsia enthusiasts will love it.
Not for novices.......2001-12-29
I agree with the first reviewer in most respects. The book is an awesome resource on how to make solid laminates. However, it could be greatly improved if the author would give more details on how to make the jig. There are good pictures and sketchy details but no measurements or helpful details. This book is definitely for the experienced woodworker. A little experience is good, but expect to struggle. Of course, that's what some of us like about woodworking -- the struggle, then the beautiful finished product when we're done.
Woodworking as an art form.......2001-02-16
This book gives information about a beautiful form of woodworking, complete with many colorful pictures and explanations of how to do it yourself. Mr. Rannefeld has developed wood laminating into an art form and his work is inspiring. He shows hundreds of different cutting patterns, gives details on building his special jig for the table saw, and includes some projects that anyone would be proud to make and own. Note that this is not a beginner's woodworking book. The technique and the projects require some skill. However, once you master it, the variety of objects this technique can be applied to is endless. Turned bowls, trays, tables, clocks, and more. All can be enhanced and beautified with this method. This is not simple surface lamination, but rather it goes throughout the wood. So once it has been created, the wood can be cut and shaped and the laminated design remains intact. An exellent book for a woodworker with the desire and dedication to create not just woodworking projects, but woodworking art.

good book.......2007-09-07
this is a book that is meant for beginers in the art of marquetry. i have 8 years experiance in the art. i did learn a little bit from the book.i would recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning marquetry.i would also recommend getting Paul Schurchs book and video and Marc Adams book and videos.
Best book on Marquetry.......2006-01-02
I have read this book from cover to cover and truly enjoy it. I find the book starts out with very simple hands on projects and continues GRADUALY to very complex. The book is well written and profusely illustrated. There are chapters describing all neccesary tools as well as many jigs. The authors are experts on teaching this subject! If you are a beginner this is the book to get! I have read several books on the subject and this beats them all combined. You will learn how to do beautiful marquetry projects from this book. BUY IT!
Everything You Need To Know About Doing the Impossible.......2005-06-14
I recently started to think of doing some inlay work. Nothing particularly fancy, but a little something to keep a box from being, well... just a box. To me it's a rather daunting proposition, one that involves as much luck and magic as it does skill. Marquetry, which is ithe creation of complex decorative forms out of veneer is high end inlay, and one of the true tests of craftsmanship in wood forms. Not being one to start out with something simply, The Marquetry Course was the text I finally selected as a how-to book.
Metcalfe and Apps do their best to present marquetry in a stepwise basis. Text, photographs, and drawings get the point across so that the only hurdle is the fear of trying in the first play. But marquetry isn't simple even when you understand how it is done. If you want to be original, you are faced with twin challenges of design and skill, and then you have to install the design on an object which you also designed and built. No mean accomplishment.
The book presents a set of traditional designs and uses them in projects. You will learn how to shade, construct, glue up, and finish each piece. Some are well past the 'amateur' level, but others are surprisingly simple. The book serves as inspiration as well as instruction, and I found a more than a few ideas that can be applied elsewhere as well. So even if you decide not to inlay that amazing rose, the book will still be a valuable asset.
