Book Description

Internationally renowned artist and best-selling author Stephen Quiller shows readers how to discover their own personal "color sense" in Color Choices, a book that offers readers a fresh perspective on refining their own color styles. With the help of his own "Quiller Wheel," a special foldout wheel featuring 68 precisely placed colors, the author shows artists how they can develop their own unique color blends. First, Quiller demonstrates how to use the wheel to interpret color relationships and mix colors more clearly. Then he explains, step by step, how to develop five structured color schemes; apply underlays and overlays; and use color in striking, unusual ways. This book will bring out every artist's unique sense of color whether he or she works in oil, watercolor, acrylic, gouache, or casein.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Excellent Analysis .......2006-10-04

Stephen Quiller's books,(I have his book on using Acrylics as well) are definitly the most helpful to me as I am attempting to take up painting again after a long hiatus. His color wheel is fabulous as are his suggestions on mixing results for different pigments, suggestions on setting up one's pallette, what colors are available in various named brands, etc. on and on. All of this information is for water based media, so if that is what you need, it is all here! One may or may not like his style of painting---it is semi-abstract with elements of realism that makes it appear more commercially appealing I suspect, but his color info is dead on! One definitely does not wind up with mud when following his suggestions.

5 out of 5 stars Color can be everything!.......2006-08-14

Great book presenting a complex theory in understandable fashion! Quiller is an expert in the theory of color.

5 out of 5 stars A Master of Color Harmony.......2004-09-17

Stephen Quiller is a real master of color harmony. I warmly recommend his book. He teaches not only the color theory, but also demonstrates how it works in practice with his own work. Quiller shows how to mix colors in real life and how to find out the complementaries. His color wheel adds the commercial names of hues that one finds in shops, which is quite handy.

Quiller will teach you not to use the "real" surface color of the objects, but to search for feelings and the atmosphere of the ambient. The leaves may be, say, violet and the sky yellow, if that is how you see them.

One thing Quiller misses to point out is additive color mixing like it was used by pointillists. When colors mix in the eye the rules of harmony are somewhat different.

If you are sceptical about brave color mixtures I recommend you to first have a look at Quiller's art at his internet pages.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars for his color wheel.......2003-09-21

This book is worth buying for Quiller's color wheel. It is by far the best and most practical I have ever seen. It makes paint mixing very easy. Throw out your color mixing cook books and buy this one.

1 out of 5 stars This book is trash.......2003-08-09

If you want a book about jarring, hideous color combinations and no useful information whatsoever, get this one. There are so many bad art instruction books, and this one is one of the worst & most useless. The cover of the book gives you an example of the horrible color schemes the author uses. Do you really want to make paintings like that? Also, the color theory in this book is WRONG. Quiller is one of those who still believes that the primary colors are red, blue, and yellow, when they are actually cyan, magenta, and yellow. I bought another book, "Color Theory Made Easy," which is much better. It teaches correct color theory and useful information. I don't know what other good color theory books there are, but I do know you shouldn't buy this useless piece of junk by Quiller. I am really tired of bad art instruction books getting rave reviews on Amazon.com and buying them because I was gullible enough to believe all these reviews.

5 out of 5 stars excellent guide to color.......1999-12-26

quiller's guide is the most systematic color text available. it combines a deep knowledge of traditional color theories with a huge amount of quiller's personal research into how paints actually mix as colors. central to the book is quiller's color mixing wheel for watercolors, oils and acrylics, probably the most accurate color wheel available in any published work (though he has a revised color wheel, available separately). he explores the monochrome, analogous, complementary and split complementary color schemes through many demonstration paintings and detailed mixing instructions. he emphasizes repeatedly the importance of a strong value composition, and careful variations in color saturation, in building the painting. an indispensible book.

5 out of 5 stars the best books of practical color theory and application.......1997-10-15

Stephen Quiller has his own theory for the uses of color in artwork. It is easy to read, follow and has lots of examples. These examples include poor choices, as well as good ones, which helps the artist to distiguish by visuals, the difference. An excellent reference for working and learning artists. It makes quick work of the confusion regarding complementary, secondary and tertiary colours and shows the direct co-relations. It also comes with a wall poster reference to the Quiller colour wheel. Colours are listed by standard commercial names which makes it easy for the artist to locate the proper colour with which they wish to work. All sorts of little hints to help the struggling artist handle media more easily.

4 out of 5 stars Great help for anyone choosing paint colors.......2007-08-17

This was exactly the book I was hoping it would be. It truly helps you choose colors from the popular brands of paint available. I was most interested in colors for a room with only a northern exposure. Every color I tried seemed to turn green on the walls. This book was extremely helpful in this regard. The only reason I gave it only 4 stars instead of 5 is the same reason others have commented on. The paint colors used in palette 28 and 29 were omitted from the reference guide in the rear of the book. It covers blue which is most people's favorite color so the omission is significant. Fortunately, for me, blue is my least favorite color.

    4 out of 5 stars good book.......2006-11-06

I used this book before painting each room in my newly purchased apartment.
I am very happy with the colors and received compliments from friends and family.
My husband is also very happy with the choice of colors.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent color resource.......2006-05-18

This book is a great resource for choosing colors - especially if you have difficulty choosing and putting colors together. It provides information as well as inspiration. The pictures are beautiful.

    2 out of 5 stars Won't help.......2006-03-25

Even thou I'm a professional Interior Decorator, this book doesn't give me much info I don't already know, also the colour samples are missing the manufacturer names and numbers to be found in stores. Yet the credits do mention which companies were used.

Everyday home decorator won't find any help from this one.

Two stars for the pretty pictures.

2 out of 5 stars This one did not work for me........2006-02-05

I think this book might be helpful for the professional interior decorator. It was just not what I was looking for in a color book. Each section generally starts with a page or two of colors squares, i.e yellow or yellow-orange. It then describes the color (A very 1950's yellow, warm and dense. Look at it with only the colors below and the three to the left). These pages are then followed with photos of rooms using some of the colors. The entire book is arranged this way. The red rooms are almost completely red (page 5-6) and very few of the rooms were my particular taste or style. Some of the color palettes that were used together seemed more jarring than coordinated, except when the author got to the more sedate, calmer colors (pg, 32, 38).

I prefer the BH&G - Color Schemes book which has a more realistic and useable color palette and presents them in beautifully decorated rooms. Again, this one might be more useful to the professional decorator, but for me it was too much text and history.

    Book Description

The Trinidadian guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is well known to biologists and home aquarium enthusiasts alike. Scientists have studied guppies for most of the twentieth century. Some of the most intensive recent research has been conducted by behavioral ecologists, who have found that the guppy mating system makes guppies especially useful in the study of sexual selection and mate choice. By observing guppy behavior in aquaria, researchers hope to obtain new insights into how selection operates in natural populations. Here Anne Houde summarizes and synthesizes the scientific work done to date, relates the empirical findings on guppies to current themes in sexual selection theory, and suggests new directions for future research.

This book describes the sexual behavior of guppies and examines how mate choice by females leads to the evolution of the conspicuous colors and the courtship displays for which guppies are widely recognized. The author shows that female guppies prefer males with bright color patterns, especially those with orange spots, and that the mating preferences of females lead to sexual selection on both color patterns and courtship displays of males. Houde's work addresses a number of areas that are of interest in sexual selection, including the remarkable degree of plasticity and evolutionary lability of sexual behavior in guppies, geographic variation in mating preferences, possible mechanisms for the evolution of female mating preferences, and the role of sexual selection in speciation. In conclusion, the author explores the implications of her findings for behavioral ecologists who study sexual selection in other species.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars So much more than guppies.......2001-04-03

Anne Houde's book is not only about sex and mate choice in guppies, but is a profound review of the state of knowledge in sexual selection and mate choice evolution in the late 1990's. Her chapters on models of mate choice evolution in particular are among the clearest and most even handed treatments of a rather complex and difficult field. This book will be of immense value to anyone interested in the evolution and ecology of sexual reproduction and mate choice. It is of extra value to "guppyologists" because of the way Houde reviews all of the techniques used in different labs, and for the fantastic "to do" list of future research questions that she offers.

What a riveting story of an era that I, too, was born into but on the other side of the fence than Gene Cheek. It makes me so sad to realize that I had the same sentiment as all the "rogue" whites because I was also taught to dislike those that looked different. And in my town the only ones that were 'different" were the less fortunate blacks. I am sorry for my generation and my race that this burden was placed on the Gene Cheeks of the US. I couldn't put this book down until I had completed it. Thank you Gene for sharing your story and again I apologize to you and your family and am so thankful for your Grandma and Mama---people that everyone would love.

    4 out of 5 stars Compelling.......2007-07-24

A sensitive and heartfelt memoir. I enjoyed reading the book. However, it is important to remember the Jim Crow South did not have a monopoly on racism. Racism is racism. I grew up in eastern NC, where my mother and father taught me to respect all people. I had an entirely different experience. When I took a job north of the Mason-Dixon line in the 90's, I could not believe the racism prevalent there. The difference I saw was the jokes and stereotypes and wink-winks were done behind closed doors. I was disgusted. Racism in the South during this era was ugly. But it was not restricted there, never has been.

4 out of 5 stars Strength beyond understanding.......2007-06-29

I am a native of Winston-Salem, NC where the accounts in this book took place. It was so exciting to ride through the neighborhoods where Gene and his family lived. Some of the houses are still standing; I think I saw the house he grew up in during one of my "history searches". I thought this book was enlightening, refreshing and a testament that not all people buy into "traditions" their family's try to hand down. There are many people like Gene's mother, grandmother and step-father who are more attentive to how you are as a human, than what color your skin is and I was fortunate enough to know them and become friends with many people who shared this mindset. I enjoyed reading the touching story of the love between a mother and son, and although I applaud his unselfishness and love of his brother, I can't help but think that he might have been a little less understanding in real life. But then again, I am only expressing how I would feel. The campus I work for (mentioned in the book as Winston Salem Teacher's College, now WSSU), is requiring all freshmen to read this book. I am happy that they are. It is, again, a wonderful, yet painful account and it is history that needs to be told.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the BEST.......2007-01-28

Gene's book is absolutely the best book I have ever read. He speaks with such eloquent words that go straight to the heart. He writes in his "about the author" section that he has "lived an unremarkable life" - as you read the book you realize the opposite - he has lived an exceptionally remarkable life which he unfolds for the reader with great authenticity and care. It is a profoundly moving book that is written in an exceptional manner. All you can think of as you read it is "please don't let this be the first and last book you write." For those of us who can remember the days of the very segregated South, this book will resonate with you. For those of you who are not old enough to remember this book is a must read, as we must never forget our history.
We should all be grateful to Gene for giving us such a gift as he has - I know I am.

5 out of 5 stars Important Lessons to Relive.......2006-11-02

I too was driving home from work when I had the good fortune to learn of Gene Cheek's boyhood experience while listening to NPR. In a world that continues to struggle with hatefulness, I encourage anyone and everyone to meet Grandma "Pearl" Anderson, Jesse Eugene Cheek, and the gracious, strikingly patient gentleman - Mr. Cornelius Tucker. The historical implications of this young man's socio-political recollection of pre-Civil Rights America encourages us all to embrace courage, love, and strength, instead of relenting to fear when confronted with difference. I've chosen to use this literary work in my Freshman English class; my students won't part with it. They have been captured by the emotion, the characters, and the voice of a boy who lost a portion of the child inside. Gene Cheek should be acknowledged for taking the risk to write and share this experience. There's hope, if this book is able to reach a readership willing to make a difference in the world.

1 out of 5 stars Repeat of Existing Knowledge.......2005-09-30

This book does not contain anything new. All content has been published in hundreds if not thousands of other publications. A quick internet search will convince you of this. Also, the book is badly edited. Hundreds of repetitions of the same argument can be found. Also, the same exposition is repeated for every color. Unless you are writing for 5th graders such duplication is just a waste of paper. The whole thing is poorly executed. It was a waste of money.

3 out of 5 stars Good content, but very poorly edited.......2004-05-29

This book has beautiful color plates of the work of other artists. It provides useful analysis of how and why their color schemes work. Wilcox gives practical advice you can put to work immediately.

My big complaint is that the editing of the text is simply awful. As with Wilcox's other book, Blue and Yellow Don't Make Green, it appears that he is self-published and probably self-edited. This is a pity. He often splices fragments into a sentence that doesn't work. This and other grammatical errors abound: unclear pronoun references, excessive use of passive voice, etc. Often a key point Wilcox is trying to make is obscured because it is so ambiguously worded as to require re-reading several times. You may never be sure if you've correctly understood his intended meaning. His book contains many redundancies. It lurches inconsistently in tone, sometimes formal and impersonal, sometimes chatty and conversational. In addition, the flow of ideas from one topic to the next within a chapter and from chapter to chapter seems a little illogical and confusing. It's a pity Wilcox doesn't submit his work to a professional editor.

Wilcox illustrates variations on some of his suggested color harmonies by indexing a series of colored thumbnail compositions to color swatches at the back of the book. The swatches may be valuable in themselves as mixing guides. But I found Wilcox's indexing notation both cumbersome and confusing. More to the point, I would figure out the notation if the thumbnails were more appealing. They have been of little help in suggesting useful color combinations because most of them are ugly to me. Many are downright garish. This is not a complaint I would have expected for a book entitled "Perfect Color Choices for the Artist."

Even with all these faults, Wilcox makes valuable and useful points. The reproductions can be a pleasure to browse, provided you can stay out of the brambles of Wilcox's often tortured text.

I learned from this and Wilcox's other book. I would buy it again--as disappointed as I am that it falls so far short of its potential.

5 out of 5 stars As Good As It Gets In Terms Of Useful Information For Artist.......2004-02-24

If you have read "Blue and Yellow Don't Make Green" also by Wilcox, this is the de facto companion volume. In this he lays out systematically the various color schemes available to the artist and uses examples of great art to teach each scheme. Furthermore he analyzes each scheme in relation to the palette he teaches in "Blue and Yellow Don't Make Green." If, like me, you are a convert and use this particular palette, the analyses of the color scheme choices is so helpful that it literally revolutionizes the way you will be able to simplify your color choices. The main thing is that one should first get a copy of "Blue and Yellow Don't Make Green.' If you are detrermined to go straight for this book, the color swatches from "Blue and Yellow Don't Make Green" are reproduced in the back of the book. If you are a working artist, make sure you have the following palette on hand: Cadmium Yellow (light or Pale), Lemon or Hansa Yellow Light, Cadmium Scarlet or Cadmium Red Light, Permanent Rose or Quinacridone Rose, French Ultramarine or UltraMarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Winsor Blue red shade or Pthalocyanine Blue (or Prussian Blue), Pthalocyanine or Winsor Green blue shade, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna (white--except if using watercolor). He has a website www.schoolofcolor.com in which paints and a special organizing palette can be ordered if one so desires. These books are as good as it gets in terms of useful knowledge for the artist.

5 out of 5 stars A Choice of Weapons, a celebration of life..........2006-08-22

"A Choice of Weapons" is one of my favorite books. The compelling autobiographical story captures for us the experience of one of America's greatest treasures, Gordon Parks. His path from poverty and isolation to riches and notoriety is much more than just a story, it's an accounting of his life as an African American with rural roots in an America that was not welcoming nor supportive-- despite his amazing talent. He overcame that to become one of the world's best-known photographers, filmmakers, poets, and musicians. A fine person, strong with his mother's teaching, he brought his spirit to the world.

Mr. Parks was recently buried in his hometown (Fort Scott, KS), not long after coming home to a wonderful celebration of his life and work-- a celebration that is an annual affair as part of the Gordon Parks Center for Culture and Diversity that has been founded there. I met him during the first celebration in 2004, going into the old Liberty Theatre to view a retrospective of his films. He was charming and personable, and his eyes sparkled with happiness; the peace of forgiveness and homecoming emanated from him. He had struggled and triumphed, and the prairie wind was still fresh within him.

I encourage everyone to read this book and to explore the huge body of Gordon's work. You will be moved. You will be spurred to find the best of yourself...

5 out of 5 stars He is gone now.......2006-03-08

I write this after hearing the news of his passing. This book gave hope to another youth who had lost his parents and was looking for a reason to become a man. The effect this book had on me cannot be overestimated. It was to set me on the path to becoming a photographer, and to pursue writing among other things. It was required reading for me when I was in High School, and the only book I read all the way through.

4 out of 5 stars Choice of Weapons / Gordon Parks.......2006-02-28

The book is interesting reading eventhough the narrator sounds a bit self-righteous to me. Too much of "I always knew best" for my taste. This is only referencing the personal remarks in the book; the description of the grinding poverty in the big cities and what the Depression years did to the people is really well written. All in all, I'd wish that especially young people read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated and wonderfully fulfilling book.......2004-08-07

      I absolutely love this book.
I am an avid reader but reserve my recommendations for very few books and authors. I hold dear a carefully chosen list of books that receive unjustly low profiles and recommend them to always-thankful friends. This book, by Gordon Parks, (as well as Manchild in the Promised Land, by Claude Brown) rank high on my list. Gordon Parks is an amazingly gifted human being.

5 out of 5 stars Picture Perfect Imagery.......2001-07-20

.... In my opinion, its imagery and descriptive scenarios will have you imagining as if it were you in the midst of the Great Migration. Concluding that "youth as it should be at seventeen was not for me, and that full manhood must come quickly if I was going to make it", Parks describes the journey in which he endures in order to make it through various seasons in the year. In trying to conquer the obstacles that each season brings, Parks learns to rely on his "choice of weapons" which allow him to see different walks of life. If you do choose to read Parks' autobiography, please don't forget to reflect upon what choice of weapons you have chosen in coping with life.
