BEADS OF THE WORLD.......2007-05-07
THIS GUY KNOWS BEADS. A GREAT REFERENCE BOOK, AND PRICE GUIDE.
For buyers, not researchers.......2003-12-22
After 20 years working in Africa and collecting beads, I find this the best book of its type for people actually going into African markets, American bead shows, and flea markets looking to buy rare or collectible beads. It is not the right book for someone who doesn't yet know the basics about where and how the major types of beads are/were fabricated, how they have traveled, and the ethnographics associated with their past and present uses. (For those subjects, try Dubin, J. Allen, Liu, Picard, and Beckworth's Africa Adorned.) But for ballpark pricing, comparisons, and availability, there's nothing better in print.
Excellent!.......2003-11-25
I boughtthis book for my mom - she was getting really into hunting for beads (and buttons but that's another story) at yard sales, antique stores etc. She didn't really know what she was buying - just what she liked - so I bought this book for her about a year ago and she has loved it ever since. There are a lot of pictures, descriptions and background info on the different types of beads. If nothing else, it has provided a good foundation for her in her hunt for more beads so she knows a little more about the types/styles to look for (in addition to just what she happend to like)
I DON'T KNOW BEADS.......2000-10-16
AND THIS BOOK DIDN'T HELP ME UNDERSTAND THEM ANY BETTER. IT JUST CONFUSED ME MORE
NOT SO GOOD.......2000-10-16
IS MY OPINION OF THIS BOOK. NOT ALL BEADS ARE PRICED AND NOT TOO INFORMATIVE.

Customer Reviews:
A wonderful book, BUT............2007-02-25
This book is a treasure, and a super reference for beaders, with information about beads from around the world. Beautiful pictures and history of the origins and uses of beads in many cultures. BUT be forewarned, this is exactly the same book as "Beads" written in 1997 by the same authors, with different publishers and a slightly different title. I mistakenly assumed it was a new, updated work. There is no indication that I can see in the review of this edition, that it is the same as the earlier version.
Gets 5 stars for the book itself, but a 1 for lack of information regarding it being a duplicate of prior edition.

This book offers easy and entertaining projects to create holiday gifts, children's jewelry, and playful household trinkets.

The World of Beads.......2007-07-03
I read the reviews on this book and thought it would be great- but I don't like the way it is set up, pictures first and then directions in the second half of the book. I also think the directions could be written better- they can be a little bit confusing. I am going to get another book on this subject beacause this one isn't very good.
This book is absolutely wonderful.......2007-01-10
My daughter loved the Klutz, "Beadlings" book. I looked forever for something similar. This is the only book I found similar to the books from Japan I used to buy as a child to make little beaded critters.
If you need detailed instructions or do not have seed beed experience this book is NOT for you. It is more intermediate to advanced, but the projects are wonderful.
Beaded Sushi!.......2004-05-06
The projects in this bead book are amazing - very intricate and detailed. There is a wide selection of flowers (tulips, gerberas, roses and dandelions), animals (giraffes, monkeys, mice, etc.), houses, people, and even sushi!
Some of the projects require patience to make, but the end results are well worth it. You will love the many uses you'll find for these beaded beauties!
Fun Projects.......2003-01-30
I really love this book. It is packed full of fun and whimsical projects. Diagrams are pretty small, however, which makes them a little hard to read. There are projects for all levels-- a real novice to more experienced beaders. A few things, like the animals, for example, require a very small amount of a large selection of different beads but the designs lend themselves well to using whatever you have on hand.
Very Talented Artists.......1999-09-22
Another winner. Keep them coming. How about one on flowers and flower arrangements? I'll buy it, as soon as it is available.

Pretty photos and decent directions demonstrate how to create dozens of different projects out of enamel, glass, pearl, ceramic, semiprecious, and other types of beads. From the basics of equipment and foundation techniques like threading, knotting, and finishing, to designing striking necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and brooches, A World of Beads takes the novice or intermediate beader through the fundamentals to an attractive finished product, with stops along the way to admire the beads of China, Europe, India, and Africa. --Amy Handy
Customer Reviews:
My style of bead book!.......2002-09-08
Of my several bead books, this is one of my favorites. The instructions are very clear, and the same techniques are used repeatedly for most of the jewelry pieces, for example, stringing the beads on thread, and using calottes to finish the ends. There are a few other techniques also, and I did pick up a few new ones for my own use, for example, how to work with leather thong in jewelry -- braiding it and finishing the ends with findings I hadn't used before.
But what makes me keep this book constantly on hand is its many pictures of jewelry, featuring mostly necklaces with a broad range of bead types. There are a lot of beautiful pieces for giving me ideas for bead combinations, color arrangements, and patterns. The earring section also has some very attractive and easy to make earring styles. Though published several years ago, these designs do not look outdated at all. I see that this book is not currently published and the sellers who have it are selling it at quite a high price, but it could very well be worth it for someone wanting to have a source of ideas.
Wonderful book full of inspirational designs.......2000-08-14
When I ordered this book, I was looking for something that would have lots of pictures of various kinds of beaded jewelry. I definately found what I was looking for in this book! It's got wonderful photos of designs the author has created, along with how-to instructions (nothing too difficult). Nearly every picture has helped get the creative ideas flowing! It also has a bit on the history of beads, plus a section on making your own beads. Good book for beginners and those wanting pictures for ideas!
World of Beads.......2000-04-22
The dust jacket on this book is covered with luscious, rhythmical beaded jewelry that invites a look inside. The photography inside the book is just as exciting. There is no history of beads here, just a straight plunge into creating beautiful accessories.
Barbara starts by defining equipment needed, then quickly instructs on two basic techniques: necklace threading and earring making. It takes her only three pages to do it, demonstrating her absolute clarity of instructions.
Now the projects begin with a myriad of design options from which to choose. She winds up by introducing you to do-it-yourself beads, such as polymer clay, air-dry clay and papier-mache', using them effectively in some elegant designs. A helpful glossary and index are at the end.
This is an excellent book on beading techniques........1999-01-16
This is the first book I have come across which explains beading chains and making earrings so clearly. The instructions and diagrams are very simple and easy to follow. The book is filled with BEAUTIFUL designs created by the author. This book is great for beginners and for people wanting to know more about beads before they take it up as a hobby.
Book Description
[This] beautiful book turns craft into wearable art. Using black-and-white diagrams to clarify procedures, [Benson] introduces two types of beadwork: needle weaving, in which beads are threaded together; and card stitching, in which beads are sewn directly onto a backing of lightweight cardboard or construction paper....More than 40 gorgeous projects. A splendid book.”—Booklist.
"A visual feast."—Shuttle, Spindle & Dyepot.
Ann Benson, one of America’s foremost bead artisans, offers an array of eye-catching projects for beaded jewelry and accessories, all created from the surprisingly simple technique of beadweaving and showcased in gorgeous full-page photographs. The patterns and instructions for 50 of her most spectacular pieces use two basic methods: needleweaving, a style similar to crocheting, and bead card stitching, in which beads are sewn directly onto a patterned card. Ranging in style from Southwestern to Far Eastern, and Art Deco to Victorian, the projects include shimmering topaz earrings, a richly patterned Oriental carpet purse, a delicate ribbon pin, an exquisite purple floral belt, and much more. Every project highlights the beads’ exciting colors, shapes, sizes, and textures.

New Needle Techniques & Original Designs.......2007-01-05
This is the latest book I have purchased by Ann Benson. She is one of the best instructions and illustrations for beading techniques I have encountered. I have many of her books, and have purchased many of her kits offered on her website. Her choice of colors are subtle in a time when everything is so bold. Her style is more European. I can't reccommend this book more highly.

Book Description
French mourning wreaths; Ukrainian Easter eggs; Norwegian bodices; Chinese slippers; Pakistani hair tassels; Egyptian belly-dancing outfits; Central Asian tent decorations; Maasai wedding dresses; Xhosa neckpieces; Athabaskan shot pouches and Sioux moccasins...from Greenland to Bali, beadwork from all around the world is illustrated and its history revealed in this remarkable book.
The amazing worldwide transformation of very small, usually uniformly colored, beads into intricate articles or embellishments is turned into a coherent story for the first time. The earliest drawn glass beads were produced around 200 BC in various locations in India and exported for centuries along the major trade routes to Africa and Asia. From the 16th century on beads made in Europe became highly desirable trade items and spread throughout the world.
After an introduction and an in-depth survey of bead manufacturing centers in Europe and Asia, Beadwork is organized into five principal sections, with over forty topics in all. Each of four main regional sections-- Africa; the Americas; Asia, Oceania and the Arabian Gulf; and Europe-- outlines the history and trade routes of beads in the area, with an accompanying map, before examining what has been produced in detail. A fifth section surveys construction and techniques, from brick stitch and herringbone weave to lazy stitch and three-dimensional structures.
With over six hundred illustrations, information on collecting and conserving beadwork, and on where to see public collections, this is the first survey to reveal the wealth and diversity of traditional beadwork from around the world. The result will inspire beadworkers, collectors and designers, and anyone interested in art, craft, and fashion.
Customer Reviews:
Fabulous! .......2007-07-21
This is a fabulous, beautiful book as are many Rizzoli books. It is not perfect as to attributions etc, so scholars may quibble, but for inspiration and a wonderful overview of international beading with small beads it is terrific! I am going off for my first class in peyote beading this morning and this was a perfect source of ideas and information to get me charged up! It is not, however, a how to book. There is a technical section at the end describing how the various techniques are done but not in anyway sufficient to make any projects. The descriptions are clear but not detailed enough for that. To attempt any of these techniques the reader will need a good teacher and most probably additional books.
A Fabulous Overview.......2003-06-03
This is a wonderful book. It is beautifully photographed with sumptuous examples of beadwork traditions from around the world. The text covers each tradition rather lightly, but the information the authors do provide is solid.
That said, some of the size and proportion choices for the photographs make no sense. Entire garmets will be tiny, while beaded trinkets will be magnified. The most annoying example is the Bagobo shirt on page 137. This garmet is worked in the unusual shell and bead embroidery found in the Philipines, and the technique is discussed over several paragraphs in the accompanying text. However, the picture is so miniaturized that if you were not reading a book on beadwork, you would have no idea that the design on the shirt is any kind of applied decoration, much less beads and shells. Meanwhile, a photo of an unremarkable (and undiscussed) purse covers half the page.
A huge disappointment is the complete lack of information about where any of these beautiful pieces may be. For those doing bead research or travelling (or both), it would be helpful to know which are in collections that the public can access either through web contact or museum visits.
Neither of these should deter buyers interested in beads or beadwork. This book is a keeper. If there is a second edition, however, I would hope for the addition of information about the collections from which the beadworks come.
breathtaking.......2003-04-13
i've just re-started beading after a hiatus of about ten years, so i am not familiar with recent beading books and can't compare this to any other overviews that might be out there.
however, in and of itself, this is a beautiful, well-illustrated, far-ranging work. africa is well-represented. north AND south american indian work is represented, including the work of the inuit and northwestern nations. there is a section on greenland beadwork, short, but more than i have found yet. asia, india, oceania, the middle and near east and europe have their sections. the final section is a brief but reasonably adequate, description of techniques.
the photos are breathtaking. and dangerous. i have already mentally designed at least five new projects. the only complaint i have is the lack of dating for some of what are probably 19th century postcards and photos and for what may be relatively recent photos.
i think this would be a worthwhile addition to even extensive beading collections.
Finally! The History of Beadwork in Beautiful Form!.......2002-11-12
I'll start with a quote from the introduction "our aim is to draw attention to objects decorated with, and constructed from, the tiny glass 'seed' beads" (pg 8 introduction). I will attest to the fact that the authors have succeeded in the most magnificent fashion!
Divided into deceptively simple sounding sections, this book will take you on a trip around the world and through history. The six sections are: Bead Manufacturing Centers; Africa; the Americas; Asia, Oceania, and the Arabian Gulf; Europe; and Construction and Techniques. Then each of these sections is divided into the the various countries and regions covered with the broad section heading. There are photographs everywhere - color, black & white, historical, and studio quality. This is a very visual book for a visual medium.
I've always felt as a beader that I am carrying on a tradition that goes back centuries, this book pays homage to the traditions from around the world. It is an incredible resource that belongs on every beader's shelf for inspiration and rememberance of all that has come before. This book will be to beadwork what "The History of Beads" is to beads and bead collectors.
TWO NOTES:
ONE: The section on Construction and Techniques is not meant to teach you how to do a particular type of beadwork, but to give you an idea of what is involved. There are several excellent teaching books available.
TWO: On page 151, there is a set of beaded sleeves from a dress from Western Europe that are absolutely breath-taking.

The Best Guide to Millifiores out there!.......2007-08-13
This is actually the fourth in a series of books by John & Ruth Picard on antique trade beads. Essentially this volume is a 90-page descriptive catalog of Venitian Millifiore beads used for trade with Africa. Large format and measuring 8 1/2 by 11 inches ( or 21.5 by 28 cm), One of the most attractive and obvious peatures is that every bead is pictured in color and if known, details of the manufacturing process are provided! The Picards open by describing how these beads were made and defining some of the terms used throughout. Millifiore means "Thousand Flowers" in the Italian language, and indeed many of these beads seem to boast floral patterns. ALso included is a helpful article by Jamey Allen, "A Short History of Millifiore Work".
Each one of these beads is a mini work of art, truely lovely to behold. If you are lucky enough to have some of these little treasures, or simply have an interest in glasswork and history, you will probably enjoy leafing through this work. Happy Beading :)
Amazing African Trade Beads.......2000-05-29
This book offers a comprehrensive insight in the colourful world of the many types beads used in the trade with West Africa. With about 3000 diffrent colour combinations of glass beads. A must for every collector of beads. And fun to recognise the collected beads.

Cute kids, zero beads.......2000-06-25
I purchased this book hoping for a basic primer of the Ndebele beading technique. Talk about a misrepresentation! What I got was a charming children's book with detailed photos of the Ndebele people, mostly women and children, adorned and bedecked with beads. However, the "craft" is not a bead technique, it is making a poor imitation of the beautiful Ndebele dolls, using tissue paper, a toilet paper roll, glue, and sprinkled beads. If you are looking for a children's book to introduce your child to a new culture, this would be the book for you. (I gave it to a friend, and it is now one of her son's favorite books.) If you are looking for a craft book of beading techniques, don't spend your money!

I was transformed!.......2002-02-13
This new book by Carolyn Manzi transformed the way I look at beads!
I have always had a draw to, and love of beads, but I never fully understood their power until I read this book. The history that Carolyn writes about is amazing! I had no idea how far back beading went, and how important it was (and still is) to so many cultures. The way that Carolyn writes
is very engaging and she makes wonderful insights with a charming imagination. She also gives many bead projects with very easy to follow written and illustrated instructions.
I loved her art. Her drawings are very primitive and creative.
One point that touched me personally was the healing power that beads have. I followed her detailed instructions and made a beautiful bracelet for someone very close to me who is having health problems. It was a wonderful experience to choose the beads and put all my love and prayers into them as I beaded. The real joy however, was when I gave it to my friend. I have to say, it was one of the most spiritual experiences of my life, and hers too. I never would have even thought of doing this if I hadn't read this inspiring book, and what I would have missed is indescribable!
I must say this book brought out a creative side of me that I never knew was there, but much more than that I got a vision and connection that will last a lifetime.
Carolyn, thank you for writing this book!

"What a treat!": Beads are candy for the soul!.......2002-02-07
I had the great pleasure of attending a book signing by Carolyn Manzi at the Capitola Bookstore & Cafe, Capitola, CA. What a treat! Carolyn provided a sumptuous smorgasbord of beads for our beading pleasure. She shared information that is in her book on the meaning and origins of some wonderful beads that she brought with her- buddhist malas, venetian beads, islamic prayer beads, African trade beads, a shamanic necklace and more. She showed us some of the projects that are in the book- a spirit doll, dream catcher and rattle all embellished with beautiful beads!
Carolyn spoke to us in the same detail that she has written her book about the magic of beads and the meaning of various materials they are made from (glass, bone, clay, stones etc.), and the shapes and motifs of various cultures. She took us through a step by step hands on bead exercise, showing us how to use beads as power objects to manifest our creative visions in the world. The projects in the book are as easy to follow as it was having her right there with us. Best of all, we left with our own prayer bracelet that was created and shared with the group. In her book she talks about group beading and how empowering that can be. I know from my experience I was very inspired and connected by the experience. I think we all were touched with our own inner magic that Carolyn helped us find through her wonderful book.
As a life long bead lover, I feel so blessed to have found this book. The text and illustrations came straight from Carolyn's heart and really takes the concept of beads and beading "out of the box." Through this book Carolyn leads us on a journey of accessing our inner artist and making our own authentic connection with beads.
I shared this book with my daughter, and at home we took Carolyn's suggestion to make a prayer bracelet to celebrate one another's spirit. We created beautiful mother/daughter bracelets the next evening. Each bead represents a quality that we love and admire about each other. Carolyn even suggested that we include a broken bead (which we did) to symbolize what qualities are challenging for us to accept in one another.
This book inspired me (through the beads) to think about how these interpersonal challenges encourage us to look at ourselves and grow into more compassionate and loving beings. What a beautiful experience!
Even if you already own all the bead books in print, this book will open your heart, mind and soul to new dimesions of creating with beads. Trust me- it's a gem!
An Invitation to "Bead" Together".......2002-02-02

Book Description
This study covers the world outlook for aluminum stairs, staircases, fire escapes, and metal plaster-base corner beads, screens, grounds, and other accessories across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.
