4 out of 5 stars Artists Sketchbook.......2005-07-28

This a well-round art technique and media book for any artist level. I have over 300 art tecnnique books. I considered this book exceptional. I would have given 5 stars, but the printing is too small. If you can read the ingredients on a tube of toothpaste, you will be able to read it. I had to purchase a plastic square magnifying sheet.

5 out of 5 stars Not for beginners.......2004-06-02

This book provides excellent examples in a variety of media. It is the kind of book I look for to provide my students with good examples, things to try out, and the quality they should strive for. If you are an absolute beginner there are other books that will provide you with more basic how-to information than this one does, though I personally think this book is very good in this area as well. I would recommend this book to those people already aquainted with sketching, but wanting to explore visual journaling and using a variety of media.

4 out of 5 stars for artists..........2002-04-02

This is a nice little book--very attractively designed and with lots of gorgeous sketches and samples. I think this book is for artists, though, not beginners. But beginners may find enough inspiration in the examples to want to investigate the techniques further.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book on How to Keep a Sketchbook!.......2001-11-27

This is a great book! It explains about keeping a sketchbook in various media, and how to use it to make finished drawings and paintings. Great for everyone, no matter how well you draw now.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring and informative.......2007-09-27

I have admired Sueellen Ross's beautiful cat paintings for some time, and was delighted when this book was published. I am a cat artist myself, and good instruction books on how to paint cats are almost impossible to come by. Sueellen Ross has a very unique style which combines layers of ink, watercolour and coloured crayon, and builds a realistic and dramatic finished painting. The book shows step by step, not only how to paint cats, but also other animals, plants and furnishings. I tried using her techniques for a painting of my ginger cat in the washing basket, and was very pleased with the result. However, I feel that it was not quite as easy as Ms Ross claimed, and is most definitely not for beginners! This book will probably inspire you to give her techniques a go, and will therefore help to develop your art skills and knowledge. For those who are not painters, but enjoy good animal and feline art, this book will also serve as a good introduction to the work of Sueellen Ross and is a delight to look at.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent realism and creativity.......2007-04-08

The artwork is amazing. The best part for most I'm sure is her step by step instructions to create this work. She gives you instruction on her techniques that you could use on not just the work in the book but for your own work, based on your own reference material. It is realism at its best.

It is not for the beginner, you should be confident in your drawing skills, not just tracing or linework. You should know tonal value and be able to create the illusion of 3D...the better your drawings the better chance you have at succeeding with the techniques in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh watercolor techniques.......2007-01-12

Sueellen Ross has presented an excellent demonstration book on her special techniques in painting animals. As a watercolorist I learned quickly to ignore watercolor books that exhibit paintings I don't care for or am not inspired by. So it is my perception that Paint Radiant Realism in Watercolor, Ink & Colored Pencil, did inspire me to experiment using her techniques so that I could approach her desirable style.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!.......2007-01-04

This book is amazing! For anyone who prefers the control of using a pencil-like tool to work with-whether it be a colored pencil, pen, or watercolor pencil-this book is a must-have. The techniques that the author uses in her paintings will inspire you to try her technique, or develop your own similar technique, to get the same realistic, yet whimsical, quality.
I, personally, like the sort of control that a pencil provides, and can see how this particular method can enrich my paintings. Although the precision of inking in the darkest areas may take some time, the depth it gives to the author's paintings is visually stunning and realistic. And her method of using watercolor as a wash to help fill in larger areas compensates for the amount of inking time.
I was almost finished with a painting in which I used only colored pencil when the book arrived, so I have yet to try the techniques. Even so, while I was working on the painting I was thinking that it would be nice to be able to make the time spent shorter and get the same, or better, results. I am happy with the depth created in the painting, but inking would have eliminated the need for, and the tedium of, building the layer after layer of color pencil that was necessary to achieve that depth. The use of watercolor would have also cut down on the time used to fill in the background areas. I will definitely try the author's technique on my next painting.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2006-06-02

I found this book to be expensive and wasn't sure if I should buy it, but it tempted me for so long that I ordered it eventually. I do not regret. There are many magnificent illustrations and very detailed instructions on how to achieve these results. Very unique approach to art and wonderful results. I have to warn however that if you are impratient type of person than this book is not for you. You have to have love for detail and accurate drawing to apreciate this mixed media approach. I recommend this book to all artists, who don't mind to spend great deal of time to achieve brilliant results.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars It is a disappointment..........2004-04-30

When I review DRAWING books, the first question I ask is, "Is this for BEGINNERS?" Because I feel an obligation to the book buyer to provide good information, and also to prevent a beginning student from being discouraged, and feeling that they are defective, or ....just cannot get it.

It does not seem to occur to the buyer that many authors just cannot teach. Instinct seems to suggest that that if book gets published, it must contain credible instruction by someone who knows how to teach, and everyone seems to desire to cash in on the Big Bucks market of HOW-TO-DRAW. It may seem surprising that this is just not so. Perhaps as many as half of all drawing books are not very good for beginners. I know. I've gotten familiar with most of the books on the market, and I know what I'm looking for in good instruction.

I ordered "The Drawing Handbook" by Frank J. Lohan from Amazon because I was impressed by the "content" page inclusion of The Golden Section. I thought that any book with that subject would have to be a good book; but the book is a disappointment. There is some good material in the latter chapters, especially regarding Architecture & Landscape drawing, and these are well illustrated. However, though the author suggests we should study the "geometry" of shapes, there are no illustrations of geometric shapes in the human figure drawing chapter, and it is poorly illustrated and poorly covered. For the price, it might be worthwhile as a general reference, as it covers drawing materials adequately enough. The placement of the chapter on Composition as Chapter #1 (the first 19 pages) was a turn off also. This presupposes that the beginner will begin by "composing" a final work, which simply is not true. We begin by learning to draw, and after some ability is obtained, we want to display our best drawing, and that is when we will "compose". I cannot imagine anyone "composing" a final work, prior to actually learning to master at least, elemental drawing/sketching.

2 out of 5 stars The craft of drawing?.......2002-05-14

If you want to learn a very basic "method" for creating a likeness (say for the purposes of primary school teachers), this may be the book for you. If you have artistic aspirations, however, I cannot recommend it. Much better are Herold Speed's "The practice and science of drawing" and Anthony Ryder's "The complete guide to figure drawing". You can't go wrong with either (or both) of these.

4 out of 5 stars Great Beginner to Intermediate How-To Book.......2001-12-08

When I think of a beginner to intermediate "traditional" how-to-draw book this is exactly the kind of book I think of. It is not a "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" type of book. So if you are someone who hasn't picked up a pencil to sketch seriously since you were 12 I recommend getting Betty Edward's Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain book *AND* Mona Brooke's EXCELLENT (5 stars IMHO) "Drawing for Older Children and Teens:A Creative Method for Adult Beginners, Too". I recommend those two books even to advanced artists - especially the Mona Brookes book which I think is rather under-appreciated and unknown compared to the Betty Edwards book.

When you have finished the two books I listed above get this book . It will help you on toward the next stage of your drawing and sketching. It's divided into two main sections with several chapters in each. The first section has chapters covering composition, drawing materials, perspective and shadows, the geometry of things and drawing techniques for pen and pencil. I really liked the chapters on composition and perspective and shadows as they seemed to go into a bit more detail than most "beginning" traditional drawing books give. The composition chapter explains the golden section, triangle-based composition, s-curves, balance and eye movement. The perspective chapter explains 1 and 2 point perspective and drawing circles in perspective. There is a section that tells how to use a grid to enlarge a small photo or sketch to a much larger one and how to make the calculations so your final drawing will account for matting and framing dimensions. There's even a neat section showing how to create and fold your own gift notecards.

The second Part gets into actual drawing exercises involving landscapes, architecture, birds and other animals, flowers, faces and clothing. In fact, it's packed with these demonstrations/assignments. For the novice the author provides a gridded outline pattern of the finished art. This is to be used as a guide for enlarging or reducing the subject onto your own paper. With each project the author gives step-by-step instructions of each technique used, what, when and where. You may choose drawing and shading techniques that look exactly like the finished project the author shows. Or, an option which I think is just as fun and valuable, you may choose other techniques he's demonstrated to draw that project and create a different result from the finished picture in the book. In fact, you could draw the exact same project over several times using the gridded outline he provides and re-do it in each one of the techniques he's shown.

I also noticed the author lists on his Suggested Reading page John Rushkin's Elements of Drawing (and Elements of Perspective) and Henry Rankin Poore's Composition in Art. I happen to own both and highly recommend them (both 5 stars in my opinion).

For me, it's the second half of the book that really makes it a gem among traditional how-to-draw books. Some of the artwork shown is more "sketchy" and some more finished. But the author has provided plenty of advice and helpful aids for novice to intermediate artists to create successful drawings and have fun while creating them. And that's the best reason of all to draw. Because it's just plain fun!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books for learning to draw.......2001-11-07

This book explains how to draw. After you read "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and understand that anyone who can sign their name can learn to draw, this book will help you learn. After good instruction, you are given practical exercises.
Only critcism: figure drawing is mentioned in the beginning but there are no such exercises in the second half of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2000-11-18

This is an excellent starter book for learning how to draw in pen. This is the first drawing book that I have read that starts exercises using a large grid pattern which aides in maintaining the proper perspective of the sketch as you draw it. The author shows the final rendered drawing and then two sample drawings for each exercise - how to do basic outline and then individual sections of the sketch on where to put markings, shade, etc as you build up on your outline. The book covers landscape, animals, people, flowers, & buildings. Good book to have in your library.

I had saw some demonstrations by H. Borgman in the excelent "Draw it! Paint it!" fascicle some years ago and became fascinated by the author tecnique.

Now with that Dover edition of "Pen and pencil drawing techniques" I found the complete basis of the Borgman Tecniques!

2)"Ink techniques" Is too, rich in exemples of types of pen and brushes, kinds of ink, stroke techniques, pen and brush combination, types of papers, colored ink, and many experimental demonstrations.

Soo you have two books in one, covering all that you want to know about that two basic and exciting techniques- pencil and
ink.

Buy that book and you will have a great companion to help you
improve your drawings from sketches to finished work!!

          Book Description

Water-soluble coloured pencils and water-soluble graphite are excellent mediums for both the beginner and the experienced artist. They are user-friendly, clean, relatively inexpensive and easy to use. The coloured pencil or crayon is usually a child's first drawing tool, so when you begin to use water-soluble pencils, they already feel familiar. Add water, and you can turn your drawing into a 'watercolour' painting almost as if by magic. For the more experienced artist, water-soluble pencils are excellent for use outside - light and easily portable, they are the perfect medium for the traveller. Carole Massey demonstrates a range of techniques for drawing and `painting' with this versatile medium. Water-soluble pencils has sections on understanding colour, composition, using photographs and creating texture. In addition, a series of step-by-step projects give the reader plenty to practise and a number of Carole's graphite and coloured drawings are included for further inspiration.
