Arguably one of the most profoundly important essays ever written on the nature and significance of "quality" and definitely a necessary anodyne to the consequences of a modern world pathologically obsessed with quantity. Although set as a story of a cross-country trip on a motorcycle by a father and son, it is more nearly a journey through 2,000 years of Western philosophy. For some people, this has been a truly life-changing book.
Book Description
One of the most important and influential books written in the past half-century, Robert M. Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is a powerful, moving, and penetrating examination of how we live . . . and a breathtaking meditation on how to live better. Here is the book that transformed a generation: an unforgettable narration of a summer motorcycle trip across America's Northwest, undertaken by a father and his young son. A story of love and fear -- of growth, discovery, and acceptance -- that becomes a profound personal and philosophical odyssey into life's fundamental questions, this uniquely exhilarating modern classic is both touching and transcendent, resonant with the myriad confusions of existence . . . and the small, essential triumphs that propel us forward.
Customer Reviews:
Read under the author's name. . . .......2007-09-24
I had heard of "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robert Pirsig long before I read it. But when someone compared some of my emails on Postfix mail servers to this book, I had to read it. I am glad I did.
The one mistake people make with this book is thinking it has to deal with zen and motorcycle maintenance. It has little to do with either, but under the author's name, in the sub title, the truth is exposed.
Pirsig's work is not some giant philosophical leap forward. In fact, there are many earlier works that cover the same material as Pirsig's with far more detail and accuracy! But where they fail to make things digestible to a layman, Pirsig succeeds.
That is perhaps the one bad thing in "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance." He has made some mistaken quotes by simple mis-remembering, and hands them out as accurate information. But even this is not terrible when you look at the overall goal of the book, to inspire people to examine quality in their lives.
I think that this book should be required reading in every high school. There is a lot in there that people coming of age need to learn, and so rarely do. The allegorical examination of quality through the tools of Zen and Motorcycles is very wonderfully written. And with a teacher to correct the few misquotes, even the down side can be eliminated.
Now while I feel that Pirsig's viewpoint is somewhat polarized, I do not find that hinders the learning process or enjoyment involved in reading this book.
So please, read this book, even if you are interested in philosophy, zen, motorcycles, or quality. You may be surprised about the other parts of your life that it touches on.
How..... Zen........2007-09-01
This is one of those books I always thought I should read and when I finally got around to it I was blown away. I am reminded of catcher in the rye and one... cuckoos nest. This book was not what I expected. It is not about motorcycles or philosophy, it is about people. The story is skillfully woven between these elements. This is not a book you read once. This is not a book though, to escape from thinking. If that's what you need try Matthew Riley.
Quality without six sigma.......2007-08-24
I have probably purchased over 25 copies if Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance for friends, family and customers. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (ZAMM) is about finding quality through "being the job" instead of 25 pages of process documentation for a 55 second operation.
Implied in this is identifying yourself with the job and finding satisfaction in a job well done. Being the job.

I love it that I can find used books at a great price, fair shipping price, plus they show up in a timely manner in wonderful shape! Thanks!
Thought provoking!.......2007-07-26
The book is based on true accounts experienced by the author. The book doesn't really talk about Zen, but is more based on Western Philosophy. The author writes, "What follows is based on actual occurrences. Although much has been changed for rhetorical purposes, it must be regarded in its essence as fact. However, it should in no way be associated with that great body of factual information relating to orthodox Zen Buddhist practice. It's not very factual on motorcycles, either."
The book is about the author's cross-country motorcycle trip with his 8 year old son Chris, which leads to a journey of self-discovery. It is an examination of the spiritual relationship between a parent and a child, and man's search for reason. During this journey, the author teaches us about life and the human condition in a profound and thought-provoking way. It is a terrific book about philosophy and life, albeit a difficult read. After reading this book, you might reevaluate the way you live, go on a personal quest for the meaning of life, and be interested in reading more books on philosophy. In my case, the book made me want to read more about Kant and Hume, and review some of the books I read before on Plato and Aristotle.
Some of the deep philosophical questions and conundrums raised by the author are:
(a) Before Newton discovered The Law of Gravity, was there gravity? Did gravity exist before Newton or is it the thought of Gravity that suddenly manifested the Law of Gravity? Is it the thought of something that suddenly creates it?
(b) The Arabs and Indians used the `zero' before the Romans and Greeks. Why did the Greeks not invent the zero? How did their societies function for so long without the zero? Could it have continued without the discovery of `zero'? Was the `zero' always there regardless of whether it was discovered or not?
(c) All arguments, solutions, and scientific `truths' have already been invented. We simply discover the best solution.
(d) How do we define the "present" when everything we're conscious of has already happened, and is already a part of the past?
(e) Which self is the real you?
(f) What is good and what is bad? The book opens with the following quote:
"And what is good, Phaedrus,
and what is not good--
Need we ask anyone to tell us these things?"
(g) "Astronomers would be telling mankind that if he looked long enough through a telescope powerful enough, what he would see is the back of his own head."
(h) In life there is no grade, no pass or fail.
(i) "Any intellectually conceived object is always in the past and therefore unreal. Reality is always the moment of vision before the intellectualization takes place. There is no other reality."
(j) "Religion wasn't invented by man. Man was invented by religion." [No idea who invented women, hihihihihi]
(k) How can something can be exclusively "material," when our reality is exclusively spiritual
(l) We should remain open to the part of the world that is beyond appearances, beyond the so-called matter, and cannot be experienced but only imagined.
(m) How do you deal with technology and remain sane?
(n) Man searches for something that he can't quite define, identify or reach.
Plato and Aristotle, the author argues, conceived a system of thought in which beauty is severed from functionality. Functionality became less attractive to us than beauty. Plato and Aristotle, according to the author, committed a murderous act by this system of thought that is still carried out till today. "Quality" has thus been victimized.
The author went insane as a graduate student as he searched for the answer to "what is quality?", and spent considerable time at the asylum. He was subjected to shock treatments that wiped out his personality and most of his memory. He later realized that he was not really insane, but thought in a different level than most people.
Pirsig sees the problems in our world as the result of an overemphasis on beauty, when functionality is more essential. One reviewer puts it nicely, "...pure `function' has problems of its own. For example, our bodily organs carry out the function of allowing us to live, but one doesn't really desire for our skin to be translucent so we can watch these functions. In fact, we would have a revulsion to such a thing. Therefore, we have a combination of both "form" [beauty] and "function"; our organs work very well without our having to see them. This is the desirable state. This desirable state is called `Quality'."
However, `Quality' is indefinable. It comes before thought, and before actions. Any attempt at describing it is useless, because as soon as you attempt to, you are only talking about one aspect of it.
This is one of those books that you either both understand and enjoy or you don't. It is really all about timing, your past experiences and knowledge, and your reasons for reading this book in the first place. If you don't understand it put it down and wait until the time is right. Don't throw it away!
Read this book slowly if you really want to understand it. If you like to read thought provoking and intellectually challenging books, you will love it!
To close, one reviewer wrote, "Many of the negative reviews are from people who had a preconceived notion of what this book was before they read it (either from the title or from a recommendation) and were upset that it didn't meet their expectations. It seems to me that these folks have received their Zen lesson..."

Book Description
Conflict is an inevitable part of life, according to this ancient Chinese classic of strategy, but everything necessary to deal with conflict wisely, honorably, victoriously, is already present within us. Compiled more than two thousand years ago by a mysterious warrior-philosopher, The Art of War is still perhaps the most prestigious and influential book of strategy in the world, as eagerly studied in Asia by modern politicians and executives as it has been by military leaders since ancient times. As a study of the anatomy of organizations in conflict, The Art of War applies to competition and conflict in general, on every level from the interpersonal to the international. Its aim is invincibility, victory without battle, and unassailable strength through understanding the physics, politics, and psychology of conflict.

War master piece........2007-09-16
This book is used as the war tactics by Napoleon Bonaparte, need I say more?
Buy this book will change your view of life. It is philosophy, strategy, battle, combat, science, classic, history, politics, military strategy.
The Ultimate Version of the Art of War.......2007-08-23
The Art of War is a timeless masterpiece of interaction of power and politics. It is about war and not war. This version is the one you want if you are interested in the simple, yet profound wisdom of Sun Tzu. I have tried several other versions edited and commented on, thoughts and ideas spun left and spun right by other authors. There is no spin here simple staright forward thought and principles.
Sun Tzu: Cleary vs Giles.......2007-08-18
I like Cleary's translation better because I think that his chosen dialogue is closer to the written Chinese text. His translation shows discipline in military strategy and calls attention from the reader while Giles' translation seems to circulate in a much more personal and poetic interpretation that although is easier to read does not execute command from Sun Tzu. Giles' interpretation is scholarly but Cleary's interpretation gets the reader to think deeper word for word into ones' psyche.
Comprehensive Translation of One of the Most Popular Chinese Classics.......2007-08-12
The Art of War is a must-read book by anyone who love The Romance of Three Kingdoms, popular chivalry story based on the history of 3rd century China.
I think it is a wise idea to read this Chinese classic from Thomas Cleary Translation. Had I encountered this from Archaic worded Japanese version I might not get so immersed into it. Cleary translation is really understandable even to non-native English speaker like me. Also it is great idea that the interpretation of notables including Cao Cao comes after the Master Sun's text. Comparing interpretation is really a fun.
What I am impressed most about this book is it says that if you can avoid the war better not to fight. And its idea of how to manage an army is really close to modern idea of organizing groups particularly business corporations.
Verdict: Nice gateway to Chinese classics
Rating: 90 out of 100
Recommended for wide variety of Chinese literature and classic books fans.
Well Worth the Small Price.......2007-07-24
I recently purchased a copy of this version of The Art of War to compare to my new Hardcover copy of The Art of War by Sun Tzu - Special Edition (Hardcover) and was pleased to find that it is actually pretty good. To be honest, I don't think that Cleary's translation is as good as the Giles Translation, but it has some good points.
For example, in this edition Cleary presents Sun Tzu's lessons as a series of dialogues rather than as straight exposition as with the Giles translation. It casts a different light on the maxims of Sun Tzu. Even just a minor re-wording of the text can and does help reveal some points which might otherwise escape notice. Perhaps this edition's best feature is Cleary's introduction. I think it is worth the small price of this book by itself.
However, if I could only have one copy of this great Chinese classic, it would have to be the special edition that gives you two copies of the Giles translation, one without commentary and another that is fully annotated with extensive commentary. Perhaps I am prejudiced, but even from the first sentence, on comparing the different translations:
(Cleary's) "Master Sun: Military action is important to the nation - it is the ground of death and life, the path of survival and destruction, so it is imperative to examine it."
(Giles') "Sun Tzu said: `The art of war is of vital importance to the State. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected.'"
I find that the Giles translation flows rather than bumps along. It seems to resonate with a more of an ancient Chinese tone that allows me to mentally time travel closer to the heart of the matters at hand. Although the Giles translation, even in Paperback [The Art of War by Sun Tzu - Special Edition (Paperback)] is more expensive that this edition, I think it is money well spent. If you have to read any classic in translation, it really should be the best translation available.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
The Book of Five Rings is one of the most insightful texts on the subtle arts of confrontation and victory to emerge from Asian culture. Written not only for martial artists but for anyone who wants to apply the timeless principles of this text to their life, the book analyzes the process of struggle and mastery over conflict that underlies every level of human interaction. The Book of Five Rings was composed in 1643 by the famed duelist and undefeated samurai Miyamoto Musashi. Thomas Cleary's translation is immediately accessible, with an introduction that presents the spiritual background of the warrior tradition. Along with Musashi's text, Cleary translates here another important Japanese classic on leadership and strategy, The Book of Family Traditions on the Art of War by Yagyu Munenori, which highlights the ethical and spiritual insights of Taoism and Zen as they apply to the way of the warrior.

A Great Book!.......2007-09-30
I loved it. Now I'm reading it through for the second time and highlighting the passages that inspire me. I highly recommend this book and the modern day version Understanding: Train of Thought to everyone.
Easy to Read - Difficult to Apply.......2007-07-19
The Book of Five Rings is a superb little book that makes some important points. However, it is all too easy to take what it has to say out of context. The time and place to which it was literally relevant has long since passed. What it has to say about the values one should live by and how one should carry out their mission in life are, on the other hand, timeless.
The same can be said of another important Japanese classic: Hagakure: The Book of the Samauri. Both of these books are important from a philosophical point of view, but difficult to really understand for those who are not immersed in Japanese culture. Both spring from the philosophy of Zen and both do a good job of showing its application is a time of constant warfare and personal danger.
A good choice to put the advice of the Zen warriors into perspective is the book Bushido, the Soul of Japan which gives a broader look at the philosophy and its roots. What Zen is all about and how it may be applied in everyday life - how compatible it is with other philosophies and religions - is well presented.
All three of these books have been bound together into one book: The Samurai Series: The Book of Five Rings, Hagakure -The Way of the Samurai & Bushido - The Soul of Japan, which I can recommend without reservation. Together, these three books add up to much more than the sum of the parts. They are truly synergistic.
VERY great book, however..........2007-06-27
I'm not sure I like the translator for it because being someone who loves and studies Japanese history and Kendo, I can't get over the fact he makes references to modern sports like football or basketball, to make a point. If it were written in a time when these sports existed, then it would be fine, however this is not the case. Overall I like the book. I think the translator isn't all bad and I like the way he explains things, other than what I mentioned. I recommend this book for anyone studying martial arts, bussiness, history, or just want a good read.
A Life Metaphor.......2007-04-10
This advice from a 17th century samurai will teach you self-discipline and strategy for life. Learn how to navigate any conflict life hands you.
This is how you conquer your enemies and the world.......2007-01-12
Musashi and Yagyu have presented here the techniques and philosophies on the winning and losing a conflict. Although the writings of Musashi are geared to the aspect of swordmanship and warfare and Yagyu to politics and psychology, their writings are applicable to any aspect of competition and conflict in life: whether it be buisness negotiations, political diplomacy, arguments with loved ones, a life and death street fight, or leading a legion of soldiers in the battlefield.
The writings are rough and brief but direct and requires a great deal of retrospect. Especially Musashi, his vernacular is that of a modern day football player or military drill instructor. His thoughts are not conveyed elaborately. But there is power and truth in his words.
If you've read the writings of Sun Tzu then the 5 rings (scrolls) is a must for fans of strategy and conquest.

i read this book 20 years ago and is totally applicable to life in the modern world .it will help you in many ways even before you finish reading it.short and to the point
Inspirational, Positive, Motivational.....Full of Budo Wisdom.......2007-07-22
Must be a classic already? I can't add much too all the positive reviews listed here already, but, despite being a small book and a quick and easy read, it's one of those books that should be read and its contents digested several times, to make sure the important messages have sunk into your sub-consciousness.
Joe gives several accounts of when he trained with Bruce Lee and there are many witty and funny stories in the book. The book covers many Budo secrets and is a fantastic summary of many of the great samurai classics. No matter what Martial Art you study, there will be plenty of material here to improve your performance and help you with the important aspects of breathing, timing and Kime.
Try and get the Bantam July 1982 edition as it is nice and small and can fit in your pocket. Keep it by your bedside to give you something to meditate on before you go to sleep and refer to it often to help you absorb the important techniques within the book. If followed with some persistence, I am certain it could help anyone increase their longevity though the various practices in the book.
The Way of..........2007-03-01
ZEN IN THE MARTIAL ARTS is one of the more seminal "Zen in the Art of..."-type titles. Karateka Joe Hyams (FKA Mr. Elke Sommer) is a martial arts generalist who studied under, among many others, Bruce Lee.
Within the covers of this slim volume, Hyams' approach to Zen seems a bit haphazard and informal. Although epigrams from various Zen masters pepper the pages, Hyams seems to have only the most limited grasp of structured Zen practice, such as koans and shikantaza.
Hyams' exposure to Zen seems to have occurred less in the zendo than in the dojo, a fact which does not detract from the pragmatic lessons he illustrates but does give the reader a foreshortened view of Zen as a way of life. But Hyams does provide a path to understanding Zen as the critical underpinning of the serious study of any martial art.
Hyams shows us that Zen imbues the martial arts with a deeper philosophical meaning, so that what would otherwise be just a way to war becomes a just warrior's way.

Best Applied Ethics Text, Media or Otherwise.......2006-06-27
A previous reviewer criticizes the book because throught-provoking discussions are begun but not wrapped up or resolved. If they were, the book would not fulfill its function. It's a TEXTBOOK for college classroom settings like the one in which I've used it, and all previous editions, over the past 15 or so years. It's purpose is to provoke discussion so that readers will thrash out the available options and do their own moral reasoning.
Using the Potter Model for moral reasoning as a foundation, the case study approach provides ample and diverse application material from classic situations to current events. The value of the Potter Model approach is well worth securing any edition of the text - it's the case studies which change from edition to edition.
The only drawback is the exorbitant price - all part of this wretched "gotcha!" situation students find themselves in, where publishers seem to be getting away with charging prices that begin at more than double what the market would tolerate for an equivalent non-textbook. Longman employees should be ashamed of themselves for gouging college students $74 for a paperback book which is widely used and therefore not a specialty oddball.
It's still a great book if you want to learn how to DO moral reasoning, with broad application to one's personal life.
Mediocre.......2006-02-25
The book is a great discussion started but hardly resolves any of the problems it presents.

Book Description
As we spend more and more of our time staring at the screens of movies, televisions, computers, and handheld devices--"windows" full of moving images, texts, and icons--how the world is framed has become as important as what is in the frame. In The Virtual Window, Anne Friedberg examines the window as metaphor, as architectural component, and as an opening to the dematerialized reality we see on the screen.
In De pictura (1435), Leon Battista Alberti famously instructed painters to consider the frame of the painting as an open window. Taking Alberti's metaphor as her starting point, Friedberg tracks shifts in the perspectival paradigm as she gives us histories of the architectural window, developments in glass and transparency, and the emerging apparatuses of photography, cinema, television, and digital imaging. Single-point perspective--Alberti's metaphorical window--has long been challenged by modern painting, modern architecture, and moving-image technologies. And yet, notes Friedberg, for most of the twentieth century the dominant form of the moving image was a single image in a single frame. The fractured modernism exemplified by cubist painting, for example, remained largely confined to experimental, avant-garde work. On the computer screen, however, where multiple "windows" coexist and overlap, perspective may have met its end.
In this wide-ranging book, Friedberg considers such topics as the framed view of the camera obscura, Le Corbusier's mandates for the architectural window, Eisenstein's opinions on the shape of the movie screen, and the multiple images and nested windows commonly displayed on screens today. The Virtual Window proposes a new logic of visuality, framed and virtual: an architecture not only of space but of time.

Understanding "Windows" and "Screens," Past and Present.......2006-11-27
The movie screen, the TV screen, and the computer screen have become part of our everyday experience - substitutes for the architectural window that frames a view, and for the frame around a painting. But only in the last two decades have multiple screens become familiar. Typically film and TV both display a single frame on a single screen, despite other possibilities. What does it mean to "frame" an idea or experience using the new digital technologies? How does it change our "perspective"? Anne Friedberg takes up these issues with extraordinary theoretical sophistication and an impressive knowledge of history.

Customer Reviews:
Oh god!!!.......2007-07-16
Super Anthology! Worth every Federal Reserve note. This book does not lean left or right; instead the reader is given raw uncensored information -long; extensive and, heavily footnoted. Wonderful study companion.
Sensationalist and biased, just like anyone who claims to have the absolute truth.......2007-04-25
Because this book has been written by many authors, it's credibility varies. However I'll put the blame also on whoever picked the content.
Sure there are some very good points about media lies and exagerration, I've heard about them and some are old news to me. Some very reputable authors are there that I have read from before.
However when it comes to the contreversial and iffy topics on religion and science, this book is far to agenda-focused to be taken seriously. For example the article trying to disprove Jesus dosen't makes outright statements with "proof" that can be easily debated and is countered on other books supporting the other side. After that is a chapter glorifing all athiests and humanists, though it's not really a bad thing, it also bashes theists, and lumps "athiests, humanists, and freethinkers" together as if to say that all thiests are idiots, and pretty blaintly says it too. Meanwhile ignoring that there are many thiest intellecuals out there and if religion makes people stupid, then why are church afflitiated universities accredited? Not only that but it is completley ponitless to the topic, it dosen't reveal any disinformation.
To be fair, this book also attacks the scientific community too, but some of it's articles are questionable. For example, one of the articles focuses on a book called "Forbidden Anthropology", which states that human fossils correspond with Vedic records of being more than millions of years old.
Okay, so this book promotes athiesm, bashes Christianity, and is now supporting the New Age\Hindu idea that humans devolved from a higer spirituality and is supporting a book written by agenda-driven Hindu archeologists who at the end of the article start promoting their own spiritual beleifs.
Isn't that called a double standard?
Also some info here and there is pretty irellevant and just speculative. There is also a part disproving the Big Bang theory. I know may other scientists have thier own, non-religious ideas of how the universe began, but it just states "facts" why the Big Bang theory is flawed, but dosen't provide much else, or maybe there was a part but I didn't see it yet.
Okay, not all the aricles here are bad, though this book may blow things out of proportion, but it gives a good start to those seeking to have questions answered regarding the content in this book.
But the title is too absoulute of course, don't take anyone's word that what they are saying is the absoulute truth so fast. If you are indeed a "freethinker" then it would be wise not to consider this book to be absoulutely telling the truth. Who knows, maybe even these exaggerated things are right to some degree?
For Conspiracy Theorists Only!.......2007-01-11
If you're a conspiracy theorist, willing to accept as gospel assertions and allegations that are totally void of any supporting factual data, this book is for you.
However, those able to think for themselves and weigh the supporting data in search of the truth in any given theory will find this collection of supposititious essays quite lacking. I couldn't make it half way through this book before becoming so frustrated with the complete lack of any factual basis for each ineptly presented argument that I gave up and closed the book forever.
Opinions and perceptions are quite plentiful in the pages of this book but cohesive thoughts, supported by facts and credible witnesses are totally absent. An enticing title that just plain doesn't deliver.
Conspiracy Nuts?! NOT...An introduction to alternate views........2006-11-09
If you are already one who questions ALL of what you hear and MOST of what you see then this book is as another commentary stated, "great bathroom reading". Stating that "if" you have read Brave New World then you already know everything in this book is a little misleading. You Are Being Lied To mostly covers issue which are in front of us NOW which you might not have gotten accurate information from the major news outlets or any information at all if you do like most of the American public: Eat, Sleep, & S**T with a lot of work and T.V. taking up the rest of your time.
Powerful interests and "responsible" news outlets in order to better shape your thinking and thus public policy limit facts and/or distort the issues of the day. Definitely worth the purchase but as with all things take a grain of salt and check/research beyond this one source.
Rating: B
Somewhat Entertaining, Mostly Uncourageous, Often Trite.......2006-07-11
I'm normally delighted with any kind of alternative press, and picked this book up mainly because I always wanted to write one like it. Reading, I became ambivalent, for the book tries to do great things but falls short of its goal.
The best articles are "Anatomy of a School Shooting" by David McGowan and "Reassessing OKC" by Cletus Nelson, where the authors deal with eyewitness accounts of Columbine High School and the Oklahoma City bombing, respectively, providing tantalizing details omitted by the mainstream press. These two articles are exemplary of what the book aims to do: provide information mostly hidden by a pandering media.
"Oil Before Ozone" by Russ Kick gave an amusing critique of Al Gore and didn't shy away from dealing with character issues. "The Female Hard-On" by Tristan Taormino is downright pornographic and embarassing to have in my home.
The worst articles are, probably, "AA Lies" by Charles Bufe, who is so critical of anything that smacks of religion he can't even deal with Alcoholics Anonymous honestly (including the organization's own claims about itself - i.e. the news that the founders pulled much of their material from a Christian group is no news to anyone who can read history). The same goes for "The Truth About Jesus" by M.M. Mangasarian, who contradicts himself regularly and imposes a 21st-century, information age mentality upon 1st-century folks.
We all know the book has an agenda, and at the moments when its authors are able to look over their own prejudices, it's a delicious read. Unfortunately, too many of the articles are caught up in a particular political, philosophical, or theological perspectives to accurately correct "disinformation."
Worst of all, I found a lot of the writing trite and unskilled. It's hard to bore me, particularly when the subject of correcting lies and myths arises, but I had a hard time getting through most of the articles.
Read it? Nah. I suggest finding the relevant information elsewhere, and spending your money on a more informative, more interesting, less agenda-ridden claim to rid ourselves of agenda's lies.
Customer Reviews:
A book that is strong in both history and theory.......2005-02-28
DeFleur does an excellent job of first providing the historical background for each theory, then moving on to provide both detail and context for the most significant theories in mass media development.
Overview of Mass Communication Theories.......2003-11-15
Logically enough the authors begin with a chronological sequence of events in the study of mass communication. They talk about the theories, assumptions, and personalities who shaped the field in its infancy. Various media forms are given attention in subsequent chapters.
A seque is made to viewing media holistically from a systems perspective. From here we're taken to a discussion of media effects. This section of the book starts with the assumptions of the magic bullet theory in the early days of media research. It is explained how these assumptions and early theoretical works proved inadequate to explain the complexities of the actual workings of media upon audiences.
In the final section of the book media in contemporary society is addressed. This book accomplishes its goal of providing a history of media research and bringing readers up to date on current theoretical thought.
Excellent Mass Comm Theories.......2000-03-29
This book was excellent at explaining in detail some excellent well known and lesser known mass comm theories. Not only does the book give excellent theories but also gives numerous examples of how these theories apply to daily life and the many facets of communication as a whole. Well worth the price and the time. Especially helpful if working on a thesis.
