Book Description
As founder of Beckwith Advertising and Marketing, Harry Beckwith learned early on in his career that no matter what product is being sold, the most important component of the sale is you. Here Beckwith teams up with his wife, motivational speaker and former sales executive Christine Clifford Beckwith, to provide tips, anecdotes, and insights based on their 30 years of selling experience. Written in a traditional homespun style, the Beckwiths offer doses of humor and practical knowledge to anyone who wants to learn how to seal the deal and thrive in business.

Good book, with lots of wisdom and forgotten common sense. I enjoyed reading the book - very easy style and got pumped up with energy after reading. Brings to light lots of obvious things in life and business, which we tend to easily forget.
Brilliant!.......2007-09-22
Like Beckwith's other books (I've read them all), I really enjoyed it. For me, each book has built on the previous one. I also find Beckwith's books easy to read. It's as if they are written in "bite-size" pieces to be easily digested. :-) Once I get started, I have a hard time putting them down. I read You, Inc. in two sittings. My brain feels like it "ate too much!"
You, Inc. is another book I will highly recommend to my dental colleagues. Well, I've recommended ALL of Beckwith's books to my dentist friends! I think You, Inc. and What Clients Love are particularly well-suited for dentists. Both of them are "chock-full" of pearls. Both are books that should be read multiple times. And, I've used many of Beckwith's concepts in my website and my business.
Between my wife and me, our copy of You, Inc. has virtually doubled in thickness because of all the dog-eared pages. It won't even close normally!
You, Inc. was an outstanding read, and I know I'll be putting some of the ideas to work starting tomorrow!
So so.......2007-09-15
Sorry everybody but I didn't think this book was all that great. There really wasn't anything new in here that I haven't read or heard before. It seems like all books like this have the same ideas but put in someone else's words or through their own stories.
Great for anyone/any industry.......2007-08-31
YOU
This book (I bought Audio Book for my car) Is an easy read/listen and has become one of my favorites.
A wealth of information and little nuggets to sell/present yourself.
I have already applied little things in my practice that made a difference and also will recommend this book for my business coaching clients.
Get it, you wont regret it.
Get personal!.......2007-08-23
This is a great book filled with memorable stories that help drive home the various lessons. I would recommend this book to just about anyone, regardless of where they may be in their career.
It's a great refresher on the fundamental interpersonal skills that we often take for granted in our day-to-day dealings with people. These are the skills that help us build lasting personal relationships and ultimately benefit us in both business and life over the long haul.
P.S. The use of stories makes the audio version is an extremely easy listen.

The Hamster Revolution is a timely solution to both the widespread problem of email overload as well as most people's inefficient (or nonexistent) systems for categorizing and storing email messages. This book provides the practical steps needed to deal with these problems and become more efficient in our work.

Quick Read Can Make a Diffference in Managing Email.......2007-09-26
Taking cue from The One Minute Manager, Zapp!, Fish! and Who Moved My Cheese?, The Hamster Revolution uses a parable to show how to better manage and organize e-mail and information. The hamster represents people endlessly running on the wheel of e-mail. Right away, I start using concepts from the 90-minute book. Considering I'm an organized person, that says something.
In the story, Harold the Hamster receives a visit from an information coach to help him with e-mail and information management. Harold is a person who turned into a hamster because e-mail and information trapped him on a figurative hamster wheel.
Harold and his coach think aloud as they explore his e-mail habits and inbox to find the problem areas. The banter between the two gives the reader insight into why something doesn't work and how to fix it. Their comments mirror what many of us think when we're drowning in messages. Though cheesy at times, the story quickly explains the how, what, and why without confusing readers with dry writing.
I was eager to discover the secret of COTA, the concept for creating folders named Clients, Output, Teams and Administration. COTA also represents the order of priority. The Clients folder receives top honors on the hierarchy than Output. Administration gets thrown to the bottom of the pile where it belongs. But this concept isn't as foolproof as the authors make it sound.
They state that you won't run into a situation when an email or document belongs in two folders. However, if that should happen -- then the document belongs in the one higher up on the COTA ladder. Furthermore, the system serves departments and teams best.
COTA won't work well for personal use (the authors apparently have another system for this, but information isn't available yet) or a small business like mine where I'm a freelancer working on a computer that houses both business and personal information.
Furthermore, not everyone will know what some things mean such as EOM (end of message) or NRN (no reply needed). These require teaching others and a team setting would adapt to that better than a lone person who must explain it in many individuals. EOM and NRN should become as standard as smilies, but they're far from there.
Some advice might sound common sense or old news to some people, but the authors share lesser known or new concepts. The book has had positive impact on my e-mail habits, and for what it is worth, that opinion comes from a long-time e-mail user (the days of BBSes -- pre-Internet).
Great new tips for email.......2007-06-20
Purchased the audio tape for the car. Easy listening and great tips on productivity for managing email overload. Makes you think before you send an email, sculpt it, use categories for easier identification/prioritization and shows new system for filing and finding anything anytime. It worked for me and can warmly recommend to everybody! Join the Hamster Revolution!
I want my 90 minutes back........2007-06-13
If you have any system of organizing your email already in place, don't bother reading this book.
First of all, this book is written in a "For Complete Morons" "Who Moved My Cheese?" style which I found to be a complete turn-off.
The first half of the book tells you what's wrong with your email style, which is news only to those that don't know how to conduct business communication in the first place. "Is the content of your email appropriate and professional?" I should hope so. Then it goes on to say you should convert your coworkers to the wonderful time-saving methodologies you've learned in this book, and direct them to the book web site. Any student of human nature can tell you, you can't really force anyone to do anything they don't want to do, you can only set an example and hope that they want to emulate it. If you are the boss, I suppose you can order people to follow the guidelines in this book, but otherwise it suggests giving your peers critiques of what's wrong with the email they've been sending you, a technique that's sure to make you near and dear to their hearts.
The second half of the book, which I eagerly anticipated, makes suggestions, then breaks its own rules, resulting in a confusing set of directions that aren't ultimately very useful. For example, the book states that you should be able to sort any email you receive into one folder, without wasting time deliberating over the decision between folders. You are supposed to organize your emails into Clients, Output, Teams, and Admin folders. If something falls into two folders, for example, some Output for a Client, it goes into the first folder in the COTA order-- the Client folder. But when would you ever create output that doesn't have a Client? And Clients in this case includes external AND internal customers. If your organization has a lot of output that isn't created FOR anybody, you have bigger problems than email.
Some of the other suggestions are obvious but presented as epiphany, such as, use subfolders within the COTA folders. Has it ever occurred to you that you could use email subfolders? Does your organization already use instant messaging for asynchronous messages? Guess what, you don't need this book.
In a FAQ at the end of the book, there is a tip that was not new to me, but which has worked for me. Turn off your email notifications (popups, sounds, etc.) and check your email about twice a day for a dedicated block of time. Otherwise every time you receive an email, you are interrupted from your flow of work.
What will happen with email? It is indeed a growing problem, I can't argue with that. I hope that Outlook develops better search technology, like that embedded in GMail. If you are one of the many Outlook users, you know that when your folders reach a certain size, an advanced search can take 15 minutes or more. However, creating a new folder structure isn't likely to do much for you, except cost you the time it takes to reorganize all of your mail.
A must-read for everyone who uses email.......2007-05-28
Getting overloaded with emails over the last 3-4 years. So decided to buy some books on the subject to improve. Bought 3 books from Amazon - Emails, Conquer Your Email Overload and Hamster Revolution. Find Hamster Revolution the best. I can see Hamster in me with over 500 emails in my in-box and having problems in relocating some of the infor later. This book is NOT about how to use Outlook. What I like is the story-telling method the authors used to bring across, otherwise a dry and technical subject, with interesting, lively and useful ideas. Strategy 1 is an eye opener for me. So simple and yet so useful ! Find it so enlightening and useful that I am thinking of asking the company to engage them for an in-house workshop ! Well done, guys !
It's a parable for a practical email management course which really works.......2007-05-19
If email is demanding more and more of your business time, it's time to take in THE HAMSTER REVOLUTION, which tells of an HR director who meets an efficiency coach and learns a simple management system. It's a parable for a practical email management course which really works, includes a case study showing how over 2,000 Capital One associates cut their email time by 23 percent, and tells how to add quality into email management strategy for optimum results. Busy managers in particular will relish its advice, making THE HAMSTER REVOLUTION especially recommended for business libraries.

Customer Reviews:
deserves six stars!.......2007-08-17
This book has taught me more than I learned in an entire semester at a FIDER accredited Interior Design program at a local college. Well worth every penny.
Just What I've Been Missing.......2007-03-30
I highly recommend this book to anyone in the business, or aspiring to be. I had an informal education and knew there was something missing about the nuts and bolts of presentation. This book is it! Everything I didn't know that I didn't know.
For project boards & rendering.......2006-04-24
I bought this to help organize my project boards, which it is great for. The bonus is the information on rendering. There was better information here than in the other 2 books I own on color theory and rendering.
excellent resource.......2006-03-24
This book is an excellent resource for the interior design student. It's a book you should get as soon as you start studies. Great reference to compliment classroom lessons. I also recommended it to my Residencial Design teacher. It has basic information that will save you time.Great buy!!
good guide.......2006-03-09
good guide to lots of information. Good reference for any design library. It touches base on resumes, presentation, etc.
Book Description
Feast your eyes.
Long awaited by professional chefs, this groundbreaking guide to food presentation will also delight and inspire culinary students and sophisticated home cooks. Acclaimed food writer and culinary producer Christopher Styler describes seven distinctive plating styles, from Minimalist to Naturalist to Dramatic, with several striking examples of every genre. Each plating suggestion is accompanied by clear instructions along with color photos of step-by-step techniques and finished plates. Complete with essays on plating from ten leading chefs and recipes for the dishes featured, this book is a work of art in itself--a must for the kitchen shelf.
Customer Reviews:
Food as Art .......2007-09-25
Working the plate - shows true culinary genius in the art of food presentation. The food presented jumps out of the pages and inspire the reader to start creating similar masterpieces. The book provides step by step instructions on food presentation making a novice cook like me appear accomplished. The book also provides delicious recipes for the dishes presented along with antidotal explanations about the techniques used. This book presents food as a work of art - to be visually and tastily savored. A TRIUMP!
It would need more plates.......2007-09-21
the book is good, great graphics and everything, but i think the book would need more explanation and more recepies and techniques
Uninteresting, uninspiring.......2007-09-06
This book contains nothing new, and is also dated. It lacks conceptual and photographic vigor.
A pointless reference with little information.......2007-08-03
This is another book I was glad to take out of the local public library before I plunked down my hard-earned cash to by a copy. Poor photography, awkard instructions and truncated editing does little to educate either the skilled amatuer or novice professional in presentation techniques. While the recipes were generally easy to follow - though nothing special or creative in culinary terms - the directions on plating techniques and arrangement were irritatingly confusing. Once too often I would find myself wading through Styler's plating steps only to come to an abrupt stop and find myself with a plate half finished, and forced to glean any idea of the final presentation from the dismal photography.
I've picked up far, far more on presentation techniques watching Jacque Pepin on Public Television, the rare episode (read, last 10 minutes) of Iron Chef (when I can tolerate it) or flipping through copies of Gourmet and Bon Apetit in the supermarket check-out line.
Save your money.
Average quality book.......2007-06-06
This is more about a dozen or so fine chef's ideas, and less about hints on presentation. The photographs are not the superb quality that one would expect, as much of the food is out of focus in a given photo.
This book should be carefully looked at before buying. If you are a decent cook, and have access to a decent library, then you will gain far more by reading other books, and looking at the photos. Look at other books by chefs who cook cuisines you like, and see their presentation. Check out books by food stylists and photographers, for current and innovative ideas of presentation.
This underscores the need for a book on truly presenting food well. This trendy book got my interest, yet sadly does not meet my needs.
Book Description
This best-selling introduction to the basic concepts of business communication is designed to improve the communication skills of entry-level managers and employees, and to serve as a reference for experienced professionals who wish to refresh or update their communication skills. Separate chapters on the communication process, organizational theory and culture, and interpersonal communication theory form the foundation for later discussions of critical listening, nonverbal communication, and obstacles to organizational communication. Two chapters are devoted to interviewing and two chapters examine small groups and leadership processes. Four final chapters offer guidance in informative and persuasive presentations, including full-chapter coverage of language and delivery and full-chapter coverage of the use of visual aids. A highly-visual 4-color design, pedagogy that is as practical as it is effective, and a CD-ROM with sample business and professional scenarios, will help your students engage with the material and apply the text's concepts outside the classroom.

Excellent Book .......2007-03-24
I obtained this book more than ten years ago when I took Ms. Hamilton's class at Tarrant County College. I still have it and refer to it from time to time. I also used the communication styles from this book for a team presentation in another class, at University of Phoenix, a few years ago. My teammate and I had both taken Ms. Hamilton's class at TCC (different years) and were very impressed with the book, had both held on to it and use it for reference in communication styles, resumes, interviews, and presentations. I highly recommend it.
Great book, Bad CD-Rom.......2006-11-09
This book has some great information in it and it could stand alone very easily on its content. The CD-ROM, however, needs work. It is nearly impossible to install since it continually prompts you to install QuickTime 6.0, even if you already have it! The CD-ROM also requires you to turn off all of your virus protection to use it. I give the actual book a B+ and the CD-ROM a grade of D-.
Please let your instructor know of the CD-ROM issues so complaints can be filed with the publisher to get this fixed.
Good Basic Information on Improving Communication .......2006-07-06
Communicating for Results is a good primer for the student or person who wants to improve his/her communication abilities.
Among the topics covered include:
1. Information on the different types of interviews.
2. Nonverbal communication in organizations.
3. How to be an effective listener (hint: we were born with one mouth and two ears!).
4. How to deliver informative presentations.
5. The types of visual aids and how to use them.
6. How to make persuasive presentations.
7. Participating in small groups.
8. How to prepare for a presentation by researching, supporting, and delivering your ideas.
All in all, a good basic book for a 2 or 4-year school. The writing style is simple without being simplistic.
Recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Say It with charts.......2007-08-27
Very good as a quick guide for building presentations based on data and charts, but a little more information about when to use it type of chart would be very usefull
Getting the point across.......2006-03-02
As an equity analyst, consultant, and communication specialist, I saw - and made - dozens of colorful presentations with the best charts that excel can draw that simply didn't work.
After the failed presentation, a consultant or analyst who knows how to get his point across will draw a simple diagram or chart on a white board that will be far more convincing and effective than the entire PowerPoint presentation.
This book is for the person who wants to get point across.
Consider it part of a broad business education.......2005-10-25
When one considers the amount of time/money they spend on improving their job skills, it would seem obvious that a high-value read like 'Say it with Charts' would be worth some consideration. It provides a framework for using charts to your advantage- and not just within oral presentations. If anything, this book will increase your willingness to use charts to your advantage when selling an opinion. It forces the user to think about exactly what it is they are trying to say - and then produce a professional looking chart to relay that message.
Any edition will do - the content will not change with the times. The underlying principles can be quite powerful and can be the difference between a simple presentation and one which elicites praise.
Say It With Charts: The Executive's Guide to Visual Communication .......2005-10-24
The book is tremendous for anybody who wants to a make a presentation effective by making it easy to understand.
helpful - nothing more need be said.......2004-05-04
Full disclosure - I used to work at IBM and as an entry level consultant with an MBA there the first thing you are is the .ppt whipping post. That being said, the IBM training program covers many of the concepts from this book. Why?? Simple, they work. Is it the be all and end all? No. The only thing that can help you assemble good content is practice, practice, practice - with a healthy dose of constructive criticism from someone that knows what they are talking about. I just got through a days worth of presentations last Friday to one of the most senior technology people at a major government agency. All I can say is that I really, really, really wish that the people presenting before and after me had taken 5 mintues to review this book before getting in front of that crowd - it would have prevented some spectacular flamouts.

Not for professionalists but good guide.
Matt nailed it!.......2006-08-10
IF you are serious about mingling with and potentially selling to or servicing the affluant client, this book is worth the money and your time. I have already seen substantial revenue by applying some of the many ideas and concepts Matt writes about. I hope I can meet Matt someday to thank him in person.
Wonderfully written...A must read book for all involved in selling........2005-11-23
Selling to the affluent is different from selling to any other market. As with any selling, you must know your market; and this book provides you with the perfect roadmap. If you follow and apply the strategies and techniques outlined in this book, and possess the confidence required, you will without a doubt, not only attract and serve the affluent, you will also become affluent.
Best Book on Affluent Selling to Date.......2005-08-09
I have been in the business for 20 years, and have recently been involved in closing the largest, most complex estate planning deals of my career. This is hands-down the clearest, most concise book on the mind of the affluent that I have ever read. The book describes exactly what I have been experiencing over the past 5 years in the industry and with my clients and prospects. For anyone who has at least one "high-net-worth" or affluent client this should be a "Must Read."
Insightful!.......2005-07-29
So you want to sell your products or services to wealthy individuals, but you aren't exactly sure how to do it? Don't worry. In many ways, selling to the rich is the same as selling to anyone else you want to convert into a loyal customer, but with a few important twists that might take a little practice. Sure, the wealthy can be more demanding, but the potential return more than justifies the extra effort. Before he distills his techniques down to seven straightforward selling rules that might apply in other circumstances as well, author Matt Oechsli provides survey-generated facts about the wealthy. This book overflows with axioms, "commandments," checklists, fill-in-the-blanks, calendar schedule pages, diagrams for business cards and numbered lists. All the sidebars suggest that there is science as well as "art" in selling to affluent buyers. We recommend this book for its useful insights into the high-stakes business of luxury sales.

A great asset to any public speaker or presenter.......2007-05-08
I wish I had read this book a long time ago. It is consise and an interesting read. Above all it has provided me with several great tips on improving presentations which I have already started to use. Unbelievably, both my audience and I have noticed the difference.
Didn't finish it!.......2007-04-27
While some stories were interesting to listen to; there just wasn't enough substance to the (audio)book. I didn't finish listening to it, and unless this is your first book on leadership, I would recommend against it.
More could be gotten from a public speaking book and a few leadership books (Tom Peters is my latest read who is pretty good).
Mike
A true resource.......2007-01-11
The author knows of what she speaks! A former reporter, she has seen the good, the bad, and the ugly and helps the reader be one of the good, if not the great. Useful, practical tips for anyone who wants to be more successful both professionally and personally. Well worth your time and money.
Public speaking essentials.......2006-11-30
For anyone who wants to learn about basics on how to conduct public speaking engagement in front of business audience, this is a good starter book. You will learn on how to tell the story, build the humor and keep everyone's focus in place while presenting. Like everything else in life, this skill requires preparation, practice and planning. You must not only know what you are talking about, but also know your audience too. I particularly liked the part of the book with tips on how to answer questions not anticipated during the preparation process (trigger method and making a qualifying or opinion statement).
Worth the read.......2006-11-27
I'm a professional speaker, and was critiquing this book to see if I would recommend it to others. It's a very simple read - you'll get through it in a day or so, I'm sure. It's got some good basic tips, and some interesting insights into leadership styles. The important thing is to DO what the book recommends - not just read it and think the info will infuse into your psyche!
I do recommend it - it would make a good gift for a mentee, as well.

Thought there would be more........2006-08-21
I was looking for an easy more in depth arena for power point, specifically how to cut small portions of a video and put them into the power point.
However it did have very clear information.
Advanced only in title.......2006-05-17
First of all, the comparison to Tufte's book, or a recommendation as a complement in another review for this book is a joke. To those who don't know what I am saying, Tufte tells everyone to stop using PowerPoint altogether, and this book would probably give him a headache.
this should be basic presentation techniques.......2005-02-21
The title is really misleading. This book teaches all beginning powerpoint techniques. I browsed through the book. None of these techniques are advanced. How to rotate a text box. How to fill it with color. Who calls these advanced techniques. Not me.
If you are lookong for a beginners book for powerpoint, you can give this one a try. For advanced book look for alternative.
Great next step after the basics.......2004-10-04
I found this book to be just what I needed to go to the next level. Not only does it go into detail about features of the program, including ones I never knew existed, but it also gave me a lot of ideas for creating effects. For example, using custom animation on a stack of objects to make them appear and disappear in various combinations, and tying in music to individual objects as well as overall soundtracks from CDs.
I liked how it took things that I have used a lot before, like text boxes, and then ran through everything there was to know about them, every little-known option and piece of it. Yeah it does have entire chapters on things that someone might consider a basic feature, but it covers those features in an exhaustive way, way beyond what any other book talks about for them, including links to Web sites with add-ins and articles to go beyond.
This book will definitely have a place on my bookshelf for a long time to come. Any time there's something I want to do out of the ordinary with PowerPoint that I'm not sure about, here's where I'll go.
No Advanced Techniques here!.......2004-09-29
I bought this book because I wanted to find something that would take my work beyond the standard fair of PowerPoint presentations. I stumbled upon this book title just before its release and thought by the title that this was exactly what I was looking for. Advanced techniques would give me a book detailing the cutting-edge of PowerPoint. Boy was I wrong. A whole chapter on text placement? Other chapters detail creating an org chart, creating templates, and using the text tool. Does that sound like advanced techniques to you? Sorely disappointed in the book. My quest goes on for a cutting-edge PowerPoint book.
