Book Description
The organization of letters on a blank sheet -- or screen -- is the most basic challenge facing anyone who practices design. What type of font to use? How big? How should those letters, words, and paragraphs be aligned, spaced, ordered, shaped, and otherwise manipulated? In this groundbreaking new primer, leading design educator and historian Ellen Lupton provides clear and concise guidance for anyone learning or brushing up on their typographic skills.
Thinking with Type is divided into three sections: letter, text, and grid. Each section begins with an easy-to-grasp essay that reviews historical, technological, and theoretical concepts, and is then followed by a set of practical exercises that bring the material covered to life. Sections conclude with examples of work by leading practitioners that demonstrate creative possibilities (along with some classic no-no's to avoid).
Customer Reviews:
useless.......2007-09-08
I wouldn't recommend this book to anybody. just a fiw bits of information from every area, but nothing specific or useful.
Great value.......2007-09-05
If you're loooking for a good foundational knowledge of type, this is one of the best books for the money you'll find.
don't be deceived by the title.......2007-09-04
not quite helpful with thinking with type as the title suggests. more of a brief historical overview of type and such. does not really help you think critically about type. there are a few other books i would definitely if you're wanting for something deeper about type after reading this book. overall, for the price, it's a decent book to own. i do wish the book talked more about the grid system though.
A disorderly book, some good advice, much confusion.......2007-08-25
This book does not accomplish what it sets out to be, according to the subtitle, "A critical guide for designers, writers, editors & students". It has some interesting examples of unusual designs and has some value for designers of, for example, brochures or advertisements. But the book has limited value for the remaining targeted audience, as far too much of the book is devoted to oddities and strange designs that a writer, editor or student should NEVER even think of using.
The majority of the examples of text settings in the book are unreadable for more than a few lines. No writer who actually wants his or her work to be read should ever want to have the text set in one of these designs.
There are some useful guides on matters such as leading and tracking, but these are lost in the overall jumble. The book merits two stars only because of designers might find it useful. All others should avoid the book.
Good history, but impractical.......2007-08-09
This book is more a brief history of typography than a practical guide for the designer. The author is the scholarly type and in that mode she provides a wonderful analysis of typography's evolution as medium. On the down side, I found the overall tone of the book to be on the pretentious, high-minded side. Practical application of the principles described is not the emphasis.

This book is a great comprehensive history of graphic communication from the cave paintings till today. I'm using it as textbook for one of my classes in college and it is wonderful. It is also beautifully designed.
awesome.......2007-03-08
One of the best book I bought on the subject. Buy it. it's a great source of inspiration.
History Of Grahpics.......2007-03-08
I found that this book is well illustrated and more focused on the history of graphics rather than the technique. I purchased this as a school text book requirement but will be keeping the book for my own personal enjoyment. Book is larger than expected and dates from early cave paintins and their symbolic and graphic relevance through some of the early wood and block prints up to Warhol and current used of design and typography.

Customer Reviews:
Favorite Graphic Design Book.......2007-09-21
I just finished reading all but one or two chapters of this book for a class where this was the primary text. I have to say that this book goes everywhere with me and has become a favorite. Compared to the other text books I had this semester (and many others as well), this was a breath of fresh air. The writing was never dry and it never dragged. What I read really stuck with me and I looked forward to my weekly reading. Also having the exercises at the end of most of the chapters is wonderful for a student for further learning that truly is self-paced. I plan on doing most, if not all of these exercises for further practice. I am definitely going to have to look into Landa's other titles as well.
Best G.D. Book out there!.......2007-04-04
Was advised to buy from instrucor as additional class materials and found I love this book! Covers from core information to breaking down new media and cutting edge styles. Would not go without this book if you are interested in learning about graphic design as an art and a science. Great organization and use of information -good for any level designer.
Don't pay retail... GET IT ON AMAZON!
Graphics Student.......2007-02-23
I am taking a night course that required this book. Amazon.com had the best price. The book itself has many beautiful graphic illustrations and the text is fairly easy to read. It is not the total snoozer I thought it would be and has many fun projects to illustrate the points made in the text. All-in-all not a bad course book although this is not something I would have ever picked up for personal reading.
Great for Intermediate Designers.......2007-02-20
This book is a big help if you have been thrust into a job where you must come up with a great design for a poster or flyer. Gives you as many or as little steps as you think are necessary. Good reference.
Great Text For Art students.......2007-01-04
Combining great illustrations along with good information, this text truly delivers what many are lacking in. From print to web design, this book explores many facets of Design.

Design demystified.......2007-09-16
Writers who want to improve the look of whatever they write will find some excellent information here. This book will also suit anyone who wants to understand the basics of graphic design. Williams' engaging writing style makes this both an entertaining and useful read. Make sure you do the exercises and quizzes - they're fun and extremely helpful.
Worth the time to read!.......2007-07-17
This book is a quick and nice read. It really helps me have a better concept of the main ideas of graphic design. It is definitely a good investment to take the time to read it. Whether you are a beginning web-designer, or are involved in other types of graphic design, this book will certainly save you a lot of headaches in the future.
Opens a new world .......2007-07-16
I love this book! I've spent quite some time working on a new business card for myself using Williams' clear and basic instructions, and the process has been exciting and fun. I now have a business card that says much more about me and is light-years away from the standard format available at the do-it-yourself places.
If you can tell that your brochure/card/letterhead/flyer/poster looks terrible but have no idea why, do yourself a favor and buy this book.
Very informative........2007-06-25
My professor actually made us buy this book for our Intro. to Desktop Publishing course. I really like it. It has great design info for graphic designers and non-designers alike and has some humour thrown in there as well. I would highly recommend it.
Outstanding Resource.......2007-06-21
Robin Williams is great at creating books that are fantastic at helping jumpstart the creative processes. Beyond the helpful information found in the text, the samples of the work are inspiring. Whenever I have to come up with new ideas for logos etc. I thumb through Robin's books.
I also recommend them to clients to give them a better understanding of what makes for effective graphics and layout design.Equinomics: The Secrets to Making Money with Your Horse Business

Stop Stealing Sheep & Find Out How Type Works, Second Edition
ASIN: 0881792063 |
Amazon.com
This lovely, well-written book is concerned foremost with creating beautiful typography and is essential for professionals who regularly work with typographic designs. Author Robert Bringhurst writes about designing with the correct typeface; striving for rhythm, proportion, and harmony; choosing and combining type; designing pages; using section heads, subheads, footnotes, and tables; applying kerning and other type adjustments to improve legibility; and adding special characters, including punctuation and diacritical marks. The Elements of Typographic Style teaches the history of and the artistic and practical perspectives on a variety of type families that are available in Europe and America today.
The last section of the book classifies and displays many type families, offers a glossary of typography terms, and lists type designers and type foundries. The book briefly mentions digital typography, but otherwise ignores it, focusing instead on general typography and page- and type-design issues. Its examples include text in a variety of languages--including English, Russian, German, and Greek--which is particularly helpful if your work has a multinational focus.
Book Description
Renowned typographer and poet Robert Bringhurst brings clarity to the art of typography with this masterful style guide. Combining the practical, theoretical, and historical, this edition is completely updated, with a thorough exploration of the newest innovations in intelligent font technology, and is a must-have for graphic artists, editors, or anyone working with the printed page using digital or traditional methods.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent product.......2007-09-09
This Bringhurst book cam vacuum wrapped in perfect condition in a timely manner. I would buy from here again without hesitation. Highly recommended.
Type History not Examples.......2007-08-10
This book makes it sound like it's going to tell you how to make unique typography. However, it just tells you the history of type and typographical styles. In my opinion unless you are taking a class on the history of type this book is not useful for any other purpose.
A great resource.......2007-05-21
As a designer, you can't argue the value of having this book as a resource. Reading through it can be heavy at times but the amount of great information far outweighs anything negative you could say. It's become an important part of my collection and has given me a great perspective when approaching any projects that need a typographic punch. Well worth a purchase and will be for some time.
Hard Read.......2007-05-12
This boks is considered a must buy book for any one in typography or graphic design. I do not enjoy it one bit. It is a hard read, and it loses my interest. It is not good for reference at all and because the paragraphs are so long winded that you could not find what you were looking for. This may be a book more for the advanced typographer or designer, definatly not for a beginner.
Great Typography book -A Must for serious designers!.......2007-04-03
From A to Z, this book covers all aspects of typography. If you thought you knew a lot about fonts, their history, usage, manipulation and every aspect -this book will show you how much you really don't know. A definite must read for the serious type nut.

Book Description
Forms, Folds & Sizes is the book that is always next to a designer's computer. Completely practical with only the most needed information, this book will provide designers with all the little details that can make or break a design such as how much space to leave in the gutter when designing barrel folds, how to layout a template for a box and the ratios of each part, metric conversion charts, standard envelope sizes in the USA, Europe, Canada and Asia, etc. This hardworking handbook is 2-color with a durable soft vinyl cover.
Customer Reviews:
Great Reference for any Graphic Designer.......2007-09-21
This book has some great resources for any graphic designer, whether you're needing to figure out the right CMYK mixture for a color, or the average envelope size.
Finally! A replacement for the "Pocket Pal".......2007-08-11
A great resource for all the little details you don't find in your design school text books. I've tossed my Pocket Pal and this is next to my copy of Bringhurst now.
for a beginner.........2007-08-04
i'm a big design book junky. i have shelves of them. so once you have all that.. you really don't need this one. it has little tidbits of design how-to's.
The Book Should Be Renamed.......2007-07-20
After reading the mixed reviews from ambiguous raves to detail specific criticisms, I checked out the book myself in a store.
The book isn't awful, but if you have a production department, it's probably better to ask them a question. The book doesn't outline anything that a production artist wouldn't know and that any competent graphic designer should know by heart.
Without any specific mechanicals or keylines, it'll give you an idea or suggestions for package design, but like a typographer doesn't need to get a book that just lists type samples of what they own (you can print samples out yourself with Fontbook or ask a freshman at any university to kidnap one from their Viscom dept.), a package designer should need such basic package design suggestions.
I was hoping for this to be a cheat-sheet kind of book much like the O'Reilly cookbook series might be, but it's the opposite.
An entire chapter devoted to how color prints! Great for a college freshman without access to a prepress class, but entirely asinine for someone who's done press checks. Your better off referencing Pantone's website or ordering yourself one of their color books since it'll be more accurate than a cheaply printed book like this.
It's actually really baffling that any creative person would rather reference an off the rack book that might suffer light or acid deterioration for CMYK swatches rather than Pantone Formula Guide Coated, unCoated, matte.
Yeah, this is a cheap concise reference, but you get what you pay for and this isn't an exception.
The book should be renamed to:
A Cheap Concise Production Reference for Short-cut Takers

This is an awesome reference for all types of folds and designer packaging stuff. Excellent.

Forms, Folds, and Sizes: All the Details Graphic Designers Need to Know but Can Never Find
ASIN: 1592531598 |
Book Description
The ability to wield typography is one of those things that is a clear indication of a talented designer. Being able to craft type well and thoughtfully takes a deep understanding of the inherent complexities and a keen eye for the minute and subtle details. This book contains a collection of 1,000 instances of thoughtful type usage along with credits that note what fonts were used in the design. Like its predecessor, 1,000 Graphic Elements, the photography in this book focuses in on the typography so readers can get an up-close look at the work.
1,000 Type Treatments showcases an array of fonts in a catalog-like format, making it easy for the working designer to practically shop for ideas. The book is organized by style so if a designer has a traditional, elegant, or edgy piece, they can go directly to that section of the book, where they will find a wide collection of fresh ideas in the style they are seeking.
Also included is a directory of font foundries and suppliers, providing busy designers with a quick reference guide to where they can find the fonts that pique their interest.

great book for your collection.......2007-08-28
having started a collection for graphic, web, collateral, etc design, i must admit that many of my books are from rockport. they seem to have a pretty good grasp at the current trends and designs. this book will help inspire and spawn creative ideas for type treatments. great book.
Must have book!.......2007-05-15
It is one of the useful books for any designer. It has all you need ways to give your vision a right spin!
GREAT.... that's it!.......2007-05-07
This is a great book! If you ever get into ruts where you need inspiration or want to see how others have handled type, this is a book for you. This is a GREAT tool, it will inspire you to see and do things with type that you sometimes never think of or may be afraid of trying. I highly reccomend this book. It's a book that will help you brainstorm and look at type as more of a design element, more than just words on a page.
Amazing.......2006-12-09
An amazing book. the collection of typography in this book is hands down the best. if you ever thought looking at design that focuses on Type would be boring. You are wrong. the diveristy, and inspiration inside of this book will keep in by you, and away from the book shelf for a long time.
Awesome Book.......2006-11-05
This book is excellent if you want to research and study how type is used to enhance a design and make a design candy to the eyes. The book arrived promptly and was brand-new of course! Just as promised.

Cutting Edge 8 Years Ago.......2004-08-20
Right on in 1996; eight years ago. But with technologies changing so rapidly, that's a long time without an update. I'd like to hear from Mr. Romano now. I'm receiving a certificate in digital prepress in December. It would be helpful to know where things are now in my chosen field of endeavor and where he thinks they are going.
usefull but outdated.......2003-04-29
expected:
an up to date explanation of the digital prepress process, tools and applications in simple terms.
got:
an outdate but thorough explanation of digital prepress written like a stereo manual. Alot of things were left unexplained and the writing was repetitive due to the "poket guide" style i suppose.
While i did learn some tips and got some detail (sometimes much more than i needed) the material is needs alot of updating. Some areas were better written and fully explained than others and the use of diagrams and tables was OK but they did not tie in well with the text..they would just appear.
One other BIG complaint is the horrible quality of the diagrams and the fact that they were all in black and white/greyscale. How can you try to explain color processing and printing using black and white diagrams?
Bottom line:
may make a good quick reference for older processes, but does not do a great job at emplaining some important stuff.
The author needs to update the material and GET COLOR into the book, even if it's just some pages with color plates. also he needs to use a better drawing program to illustrate points, b/c it looks like he used MS Word's drawing tools.
All what you need to know.......2002-06-09
I started a graphic design Department out of my love for design and printing, but I had no knowledge of the "REAL" Graphic Art Business until I read this Book. It has all the information you need starting from working your files on the computer, how to save them, problems encountered with saving files in the wrong format, as well as information on AM and FM screening, dot gain, banding, exposure,... and all the information one needs to know about the business and ART of Digital printing. If you are a biginner or a professional, this book will satisfy you since it has all the answers to your "UNASWERED" questions. It will guide you through all the process as well as the "SECRETS" of Prepress. This is a MUST READ AND HAVE BOOK.
It covers virtually every aspect of digital prepress process.......1999-02-18
A compact yet weighty volume covering virtually every aspect of the digital prepress process. The author provides an historical base for the latest technologies. This authoritative work, written by renowned expert Frank Romano, provides a clear and understandable treatment of the technology applied to each step in the prepress process.

Book Description
Approach page design in a revolutionary new way! Unlike other graphic design books, The Elements of Graphic Design reveals the secrets of successful graphic design from the unique perspective of the page's "white space." With the help of carefully selected examples from art, design, and architecture, the role of white space as a connection between page elements is thoroughly explored. Clear, insightful comments are presented in a dynamic page design, and interactive design elements, thought-provoking captions, and scores of illustrations challenge designers to "think out of the box." This unique resource is guaranteed to inspire more creative and thorough thinking.

Visually confusing, the layout makes the content questionable........2007-08-12
The layout of this book is confusing and really, really bad. The content is repetitive and dull, and is very basic. I hope nobody learns to design like the author, his book is a trainwreck.
I like The Non Designer's Design Book for really basic stuff, and I am a huge fan of Designing With Type for typography.
Don't buy this book, it is dissapointing
Excellent resource.......2007-08-09
This book is invaluable for its information. If only one could memorize and master each and every page, one would never have a design problem again. Amazing and concise, the knowledge contained within this book is absolutely wonderful!
Mediocre.......2007-06-06
Add me to the chorus of naysayers. There are a few good concepts in here, buried in repetitive, obtuse writing and confusing (!) layout.
Some, even many, of the examples are good, but the book is too small in format to do them proper justice. I wouldn't be surprised if White designed the book for a larger size, but it got reduced to cut costs.
I'm a dabbler/hobbyist with a limited design bookshelf, but for what it's worth, I would suggest instead:
The Non-Designer's Design Book -- for a much clearer and more compelling introduction to graphic design basics for novices. Simple and informal, but way more memorable.
Logo Font & Lettering Bible: A Comprehensive Guide to the Design, Construction and Usage of Alphabets and Symbols -- colorful, packed with visual ideas, pure fun.
Thinking with Type: A Critical Guide for Designers, Writers, Editors, & Students (Design Briefs) -- much better written, more comprehensive, and better looking "serious" coverage of similar material.
Solid graphic arts reference, not overly trendy .......2007-06-06
Coming from a technical background (and not art school), I was looking for a solid graphic arts intro that had lots of examples. White gives lots of illustrations of the good, bad, and the ugly of graphic arts - as applied to both print and new media. He focuses on the use of white space as an integral part of the overall design; typography is covered in a comprehensible way as well.
A great reference I plan to keep and apply in the near future.
Great book.......2007-06-03
This is a great book that shows you the essentials of graphic design. There is a lot of information jam packed into this book. There is a nice section in the book that even explains typography. I have been doing a lot of logo competitions and after reading this book my average rating per logo that I design has gone up 1 point which is insane. I recommend this book to everyone!!!!

Typography 101.......2004-04-17
I found this book to be an excellent, well organized, and easy to use tool in learning the history, classification, and organization of type. It is a great text for anyone starting out in the design field as well as for the experienced designer. I never knew exactly how much care and detail went into properly setting type until I got into this book. Mr. Kane has included excellent visual examples and some extremely useful exercises to help illustrate each subject covered in the text. The book flows very well and is a pleasurable read, and there is always something new for your eyes to take in on the next page.
I had the pleasure of taking two classes taught by Mr. Kane, and he definately knows typography backwards and forwards. He, as well as his book, is a wealth of knowledge for the aspiring designer.
Very modern and practical.......2003-02-04
A great book that introduces to the beginner many of the sensitivities that one ought to have when working with type.
It gives many great practical examples and exercises that makes one appreciate type on many levels.
As one who is taking a class in Typography, this is a great book to have by one's side.
