Product Description
A treatise on the color system of Johannes Itten based on his book The Art of Color edited and with a foreword and evaluation by Faber Birren.
Customer Reviews:
Great reference book to have.......2006-11-04
I purchased this book because I wanted to understand colors, color schemes and theory(ies) better in order to apply to my necklace designs. It's a good book to have in your library, but it won't answer all the questions you may have about some applications. Itten's other books however cover pretty much everything; try The Art of Color, for example, if you'd like learn more about color effects on moods/feelings.
For the Serious..........2006-08-13
It's been difficult to give a balanced critique. On one hand, "Elements of Color" has a wealth of information, but on the other, it takes serious committment to fully understand and comprehensively apply the information Itten presents. There is much valuable data, but it's interspersed with almost stereotypic, outmoded "Teutonic" concepts; e.g. assigning "Blond Types" springtime, bright, vivid colored topics, while "Dark Types" should be assigned "Night, Burial and dark room" topics. There is much valuable, technical information, but it is like digging through hard stone to find the gold; overwrought and culturally centered, judgemental statements are very common ("red expresses intermediate degrees between the infernal and sublime"... what's this?!?!). Other statements seem value-laden, i.e., "sentimental blue", "angelic pink", "blue reigns supreme"... Some excuse may be found in realizing the concepts in this treatise may have been developed before the Post Modernist Age, which accepts cultural and ethnic diversity, that accepts art and the use of color as being open to various interpretations, that color is certainly relative and greatly subjective, that many statements about color are only opinions... and that there is no absolute truth as to what color is "right" or "wrong". Unless the reader is studious and very serious about trying to unearth the information contained in this book, he or she is much better served by studing Albers or others. Too bad there is no editing, no index, and no glossary. What would Itten think of the book, "Chromophobia"? ... Pablo Tellez
so you decided to learn the truth about colors..........2006-07-24
Itten, himself is one of the greatest color theorist of our century, and the masterful mind behind the Bauhaus School.
In this book Itten describes his color theory and the facts of his famous "Color Star", which is one of the most strongest tools for color harmony for designers and alike.
Most color books have samples of color harmonies you choose from when you design, or talk about complementary colors, but cant tell you why u use such combinations or so.
If you have an analytical approach to design, rather than just copying what others do, you will love this book. You will begin to understand the language of colors.
Have u ever heard of "the Seven Color Contrast", if not then it is time for you to get familiar about it.
This book is an evaluation of Ittens masterpiece "Art of Color". The chapter on subjective experience of color is very limited in this book.
If you are willing to invest more on color matters buy "Art of Color"
If you are happy to stay with the basics then this book is adequate for your purposes.
Color from a master.......2006-07-14
Although witten for artists who mix colors for an effect, this small book has a wealth of information for fiber artists and quilters. How do translucent colors interact with other colors? Illusions in color? Which colors can be used in conjunction with other shades and tints? It is all here in this book. Many illustration, color plates, and well written text.
Very scientific, but easily readable. Good reference book on color.
Essential Reading for the Serious Colorist.......2002-01-26
I have been a professor for 15 years. "The Elements of Color" has been required reading for many of my courses. It is not only enriching as a color theory document, but it helps expand the artist or designers possibility of using, arranging and conceiving color.
Customer Reviews:
I guess it depends on what you mean by serious.......2007-04-08
When she says serious... in the last few pages she tells you about becoming a full time artist, pros and cons kind of thing and options. She gives suggestions of places you can look into to show your work, but does not tell you how, just where to go. She does however say to go to the library to find out more or the internet. I guess most people don't know that, to me it is obvious. But hey, now you know and you didn't have to buy the book!
The artwork in the book sucks. It lacks depth and looks flat. Sure there is color, but it all seems to have the same pressure to it. Some may be better than others, buy my eyes don't want to look at it long. So, a tip that I know in becoming a serious artist is that if you actually want people to buy your work, you will want to create something that captures the attention of the viewer and keeps them there. The more they look at your work or the longer, the more likely they will buy it. The only one in there that looked pretty cool was the monopoly picture.
It's odd, she shows some basic examples of creating the illusion of 3D using tonal values from light to dark as well as discussing form, volume and space... but does not fully carry it through in her own work.
I just think if your going to learn from an artist, you would want to learn from someone who can give a good example. Why not learn it the right way the first time? There are too many other books that could do it better for ya. Check out books by Ann Kullberg, Janie Gildow, Gary Greene, Vera Curnow, or even Bernard Poulin. These artists have books for beginners and advanced, check them out and find the level best for you. They are better examples to follow. And if you want to start selling find a book strickly for that. Though Ann Kullberg, in "colored pencil portraits step-by-step has a section where she explains how she sells her portraits.
Are you kidding?.......2007-03-30
How did this artist ever get this published? The artwork in this book is so amateurish I did not even want to read what he/she had to say. I don't want my pieces to look like theirs. It looked like junior high artwork. The proportions of animals were totally incorrect, color wasn't eye catching, pieces looked like crayon drawings. This must be self published. I returned the book I didn't even care that I lost my shipping costs, I would never look at it or read it again.
Not for beginners.......2007-02-06
I think this may be a fine book for more advanced artists. There was little help for true beginners, even"serious " ones. There was much philosophy and opionion, but little practical help.
THE book on Colored Pencil........2007-01-25
If you can only have one book on colored pencil, let it be this one. I had to buy another one when my professor saw it. It is another book that I read with pen and highlighter in hand. I couldn't just read it I had to study it.
The only book you need.......2006-10-29
If you can only buy one book on the art and craft of colored pencil, buy this one! If you have a hundered books on art, I'd still say: you need this one! Bet Borgeson is well known for her intelligence, wit, humor, and her refusal to "talk down" to the reader or student. Page for page, there is more useful information in this book than in any other art book on my shelves -- and most of it is invaluable for artists working in any medium. From the basics of "getting started," to the philosophy of an artist's life, this book is jam-packed with useful and thought provoking information. Its richness and quality call to mind Richard Schmid's _Alla Prima_ or Rex vicat Cole's _ The Artistic Anatomy of Trees_, two of my other personal favorites. I love this book!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2006-01-10
Great tool for learning Bobbin Lace; beautiful patterns easy to understand.
basic skills fully explained.......2004-03-27
This is a great book to learn lacemaking with. Very clear and uses the techniques used by most American teachers.
Great book for beginning to learn torchon bobbin lace.......1998-04-18
The reason I like this book is that the diagrams and photographs are clear and use colored threads. You can learn how to make beginning torchon bobbin lace on your own with this book. Descriptions of how to wind on your bobbins and how to start are defined well and the method to make simple bookmarks all the way through to more advanced projects are explained in detail.

Book Description
This unique atlas includes over 475 full color photomicrographs while providing students with a readily accessible source of morphologic information for use in the identification of tissues and organs. Each photomicrograph is accompanied by explanatory captions that guide students to the key morphologic features that identify the function of the structures. The self-assessment section at the end of the book serves as a review tool for those structures that students traditionally have difficulty in identifying.

Helpful study tool.......2006-03-09
My professor had recommended this text, though did not require it for her histo class. I found it extremely helpful in studying for lab exams outside of class, but it wasn't very helpful in learning about cell types that we hadn't discussed in lecture first. An overall helpful study tool.
Great Atlas.......2004-05-16
I'm a med student and found this atlas to be a great source for studying for the my class exams. The pictures are great and it makes the facts easier to learn. Squamous cell epithelium never looked so good. I also used the following:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
This study guide helped me with test preparation because it showed me what to focus on and the type of questions that were asked on my tests. I highly recommend both books.
This is an excellent atlas........2004-04-08
I found the color atlas to be extremely helpful. The images are very clear and structures are labeled. It's a useful guide for medical students new to histology.
It is a the name says just an atlas.......2001-12-27
You need to know from other sources to understand the pictures.
Quality of the paper and pictures are good but unfortunately there is hardly any explanation what they are, what the functions are. It is not just because they run out of space, one side of the page is generally empty. I guess it is the concept that needs to be changed. Yes pictures are worth tousands of words but it would be much nices with some talk.Book is divided into systems. Book is also missing a short introduction that could have been very helpful.
Best Atlas Available.......2000-08-05
I've done a lot of searching into histo atlases. This one has the best photographs of all I saw. They are untouched by artwork like other atlases. They are the real thing, which I think is important for future practice with the microscope. There are two problems with this atlas. First, although the photographs are organized quite logically, there is no boldface title above each one. It is annoying when you are browsing the book. I remedied this by writing in my own titles, but it would be SO much nicer. The second thing is there is no histological information contained with the photos. There are only small description boxes next to each. Unfortunately to my knowledge there is no such thing as a histology atlas that has high-yield histo information included. I think if the company who made this atlas adds high-yield info the resulting book would be used by every medical student in the country. What's ironic is there is so much white space in this atlas. It's as if the publisher intended to add in info boxes, but never got around to it. All we need are small bites of info like exists in the High-Yield series with the beautiful photos in this atlas.
If you are the publishers of this book, heed my advice and you'll make a fortune. Medical students like to have everything wrapped up in neat little packages instead of cross-references several sources. It makes studying so much easier.

What a book!!!.......2001-10-10
An amazing book with great colorful pictures. It begins from how to prepare histologic sections to the description of the most important tissues, organs and systems of eight species (dog, cat, horse, cow, sheep, goat, pig, and chicken). Before the pictures, the book gives you a very useful and brief chapter introduction. It also has a detailed glossary containing nearly 750 words. A necesary book for a veterinary student. El mejor libro de histologia veterinaria que he visto!
an atlas with great pictures and concise text.......2000-10-07
This atlas provides wonderful full color pictures of cells and tissues from several animal groups. The pictures are logically grouped by tissue type with examples from different species being shown together. Many of the sections have brief, but useful introductions. All the pictures are well labeled and have a brief discription of important characteristics of the specific cells or tissue types presented.
It likely to be useful to individuals working in veterinary science, animal science or animal research.

Customer Reviews:
Great book, regardless of your programming language.......2007-04-13
I'm not a VB programmer, but I was able to understand the theory in this book, and I could easily work through the code examples to translate them into Delphi and C#. It's very hard to find a book (for any programming language) that explains 3D graphics in simple terms, and with useful code examples. Even though this book is getting a little dated, this book will still be among my highest recommendations for years to come. The basic theory does not change, even though programming languages evolve.
The Best VB 6 Graphics Programming Book.......2005-01-09
This is an excellent book. It covers many aspects of Computer Graphics including Vector Graphics, Raster Graphics, Animation, Curves and Surfaces, 2D and 3D Transformations, and Rendering. Each chapter comes with lots of sample code on the CD. The underlying mathematics are also nicely explained.
I only wish their was a 3rd edition for VB.NET.
Excelent Reference on Graphics Work.......2002-04-08
This book is very close to perfection in covering topics of the graphics manipulation, which up to the current times was an option of C/C++ developers ( as far as availability of information and samples). It's good for novice and seasoned developers alike.
Extremely good book.......2001-07-12
If you just HAVE to develop graphics apps in VB, this is your best bet.
Outstanding book!.......2001-06-30
I am happy with my decision to buy this book, it has what I was looking for and even more than expected.
Highly recomendable.

Based heavily on the work of Lewis Bostwick, founder of the Berkeley Psychic Institute, Basic Psychic Development is a complete learning system for would-be psychics. Rather than closing oneself to outside energies, Friedlander's system encourages an open, playful approach to experiencing the energies around us with new tools like auras, chakras, and clairvoyance. While the premise of Basic Psychic Development is to advance awareness, understanding, and control over one's psychic abilities, the ultimate goal is individuation--owning one's identity--something more valuable than any psychic ability. --Brian Patterson
Customer Reviews:
Good Exercise Book.......2007-03-22
This isn't what I expected when I bought the book. I thought it would give general info like all the other books that I have read. This book from front to back is basically exercises that you do, to clear yourself and gain focus. Over all it's a good book. I just wasn't expecting it to be an exercise book. The exercises would definitely benefit you if you do them. I like how they go about them, they are some of the best ones that I have come across yet!
An Owners Manual For Your Soul.......2007-01-20
This book is like an instruction manual for cleansing and healing your body both inside and out. As the energy of the world shifts we need to learn how to respond as well as how to keep ourselves healthy and sane. This book gives you the tools you need to take care of yourself and gain some insight on what's really important in your life.
Not bad, but I expected more........2006-11-10
I bought this book on the strength of Friedlander's previous book "Be Psychic Now" which I recomend with 5 stars. It gives fairly good BASIC start for training yourself in psychic abilities. However, I expected more since this is his second book on this subject. I would instead recomend the "Free Soul" Courses by Pete Sanders.
GREAT BOOK.......2006-04-24
I personally enjoyed this book. The exercises are great. They can be a bit long. After all, you have to sit in a chair and close your eyes and follow meditations that have anywhere from 4 or 16 different steps. The best advice I can give anyone is to have someone read you the meditations while you focus with eyes closed. Otherwise you'd be sitting trying to focus with a book in your hands only to have to open them to read the next step. I personally made my own voice recording and play it back for myself.
I went to a meditation clairvoyant school in Chicago that pretty much uses the same techniques. I didn't get along very well with the teachers so I was pleased to buy this book and continue my learning. I hope more indepth books by this author will follow in the future.
Highly Informative.......2003-03-11
This book contains a lot of great basic information and numerous exercises for expanding your psychic awareness. Also, the descriptions of the various chakras are excellent. I had no idea for example that we all have hand and feet chakras, as well as four chakras above and below us. I also discovered each person's aura is quite complex with several different layers that correspond to each chakra.
The book's first chapter starts off not surprisingly with grounding exercises, running earth and cosmic energy. Always good to start with basics. The next chapter discusses the various chakras. Subsequent chapters discuss topics like distinguishing your energy from others, cords and how to "dissolve" them, "screens," aura layers and repairing them if needed.
I found the book along with all the various exercises, to be fascinating and plan to refer to it often in the future as I expand my psychic awareness.
Book Description
This atlas and text of histopathology provides a practical collection of color photomicrographs of diseased human tissue to supplement standard pathology texts. An ideal companion to Wheater's Functional Histology, this new edition gives more emphasis to the scientific basis of disease and clinicopathological correlations.
Customer Reviews:
life saver.......2004-04-22
This book is what saved my life in the pathology, microbiology and immunology course at my med school. The book put all the histopathology which was very dense and made unnecessarily complicated by the lecturers and the Robbins PBOD book in a very logical way. It has great micrographs with thorough text accompanying them and is a must have.
An excellent primer of pathology.......2003-07-23
If you agree that seeing is believing, then this book is for you. Microscopic images with accompanying texts illustrate important concepts and salient features of common diseases. The language is clear and facts are presented concisely. I particularly loved the part on general pathology : it contains one of the most beautifully written summaries of the recurring themes in pathology...i.e. cell injury, necrosis, adative response, neoplasia, inflammation, thrombosis etc. Read, re-read and re-read the first few chapters of this book, so that those concepts get stuck in your brain. Once that's mastered, you'll have little difficulty facing systems pathology.
Unfortuantely, no book is perfect... this one has no gross/macro pictures, and the texts while perfectly summarised, are not enough to get you thru the boards or other path exams. If you're looking for uncommon or esoteric stuff, search elsewhere.
Nevertheless, I would call this the perfect primer of pathology, and an essential companion to the bigger textbooks.
Buy it if you really want to UNDERSTAND and APPRECIATE pathology.

Customer Reviews:
SO ****ING BORING.......2006-09-17
This book, is so hard to read, i don't know how any one could possibly turn a book that i, a darkroom hobbist my self could have wirtten in perhaps two hundered pages into a 464 page snooz fest. he includes all this unessiccary stuff aout how the film works and summerizeds stuff hes going to explain before he explains it... WHO CARES!!?? if i wanted to know how film works id buy a book on film! If you want to set up a drak room, eihter take a class, or buy a diffent book, thats not so hard to read, its basicly a text book. is it a bad book? nay, but don't expect to use it as a instruction manual, it has about fifty pages of nonsense between the actaul process of making a god damn darkroom!
Superb Darkroom Manual.......2005-12-17
This book by Tom Grimm is by far the most comprehensive and practical handbook on darkroom information and procedures that I have yet read. I have been involved in photography since the early 1950's and this is one of the best books on this aspect of photography that I own. I believe it surpasses that excellent book "Enlarging" by Jacobson and Mannheim that I also own and still use (1975 edition). I just do not understand the previous criticism made that the book requires "a degree" to understand it! The only criticism I would make is that products listed by the author are not always available to UK photographers, as it has, naturally, an American bias, however, even with that small defecit, the book is well worth the price!
Best Photography book!.......2004-09-10
This is one of the best photography books around, in my opinion. Very very detailed coverage of most all aspects of B&W and color photography. The author does not assum that you have your very own private dark room and makes sigguestions as to how you can use things you probably allready have around your house instead of expensive photography equipement. For instance, the author sigguests that you might use a fish tank and heater to control the temperature of color chemicals! And I tell you what, that is a lot less expensive compared to buying a rotary processor from Jobo.
The author gives detailed explinations of how processos work, and some hostory behind them. He also lets you just jump ahead to the quick and simple overview. This lets you learn about what your doing, if you new to the area, or get a quick review if you're not sure your quite remember how to do something.
Truly a great book, or even textbook for college classes.
Terrible book!.......2001-07-26
I am writing this review in order to warn new-comers to the field of photography against buying it. Although the title specifies, "for beginners through experts," this book almost requires a degree to comprehend it. Techniques discussed are not for beginners! The book insists you need to spend vast amounts of money and time to develop prints; this is untrue. In fact, a beginner would need to read 6 chapters of the book, which are extremely confusing, before being able to develop a black-and-white print. The process could quite easily be explained in less than a page.
In short, I do not recommend anyone buy this terrible book.
This "Basic" Darkroom Book has it ALL........1999-08-14
As it says on the book's cover, for beginners through experts. Basic indeed! The author covers virtually every subject in photofinishing from basic black & white printing through color processing & printing with various films, papers and chemistry to delving into the digital darkroom! The author explains each subject in entertaining and conversational style to build the foundation for a more detailed and thorough explanation of the science & art of custom darkroom procedures and techniques. Photographs, illustrations and tables compliment the text.
