    Book Description

The City of Destiny remains unsure of what its destiny should be. The land is much changed from that which George Vancouver called "the most lovely country that can be imagined" where "the labour of its inhabitants would be amply rewarded in the bounties which nature seems ready to bestow on cultivation." Even so, an anonymous visitor to the Pacific Northwest, quoted in the January 12, 1894, issue of Harper's Weekly, had it right: "Well gentlemen, if I were a man of wealth seeking a home and investments on Puget Sound, I would live in Tacoma and invest in Seattle." Book Description

Walking around New York City was what Mitty Blake did best. He loved the city, and even after 9/11, he always felt safe. Mitty was a carefree guy–he didn’t worry about terrorists or blackouts or grades or anything, which is why he was late getting started on his Advanced Bio report.
Mitty does feel a little pressure to hand something in–if he doesn’t, he’ll be switched out of Advanced Bio, which would be unfortunate since Olivia’s in Advanced Bio. So he considers it good luck when he finds some old medical books in his family’s weekend house that focus on something he could write about. But when he discovers an old envelope with two scabs in one of the books, the report is no longer about the grade–it’s about life and death. His own.
This edge-of-your-seat thriller will leave you breathless.

My 6th grade son hates to read but he absolutely loved this book! He takes it everywhere with him, even the car. I highly recommend it for boys who love adventure or mystery books.

This is an outstanding book. Very contemporary and the students who have read it with me highly recommend it. The references are current and the topic is very real. I would recommend this to any high school student and to all health classes!

I inadvertantly ordered $330 dollars worth of the subject book. When I realized my error I contacted Amazon and told them of the mistake and asked them to credit my account immediately. They could not do this of course although to my mind it was their convoluted site that caused me to order more than I wanted. I contacted the FTC but they were no more responsive than Amazon. At no time did I speak to anyone other than computer generated messages, a situation probably designed by the Amazon people. I stressed that I had returned the books and that it was a hardship to have over $330 paid out of my banking account--more computer generated responses. I am buying more books however, all from vendors other than Amazon.

Imagine waking up only to realize that life itself means nothing to the people upstairs. Mitty Blake, a carefree 15-year-old, feels this way soon after the fate of the world is put in his hands. Mitty is a native New Yorker who still gets chills when he thinks about the 9/11 tragedies. He never finishes his homework, but when he receives his science term paper, he starts his research right away. He opens an old and crusty book to find dried-up smallpox scabs. Mitty thinks nothing of it until he gets deeper into his research. He begins to feel the weight of the country on his shoulders, and ponders if he can actually create smallpox in today's world of medical advancement. He cannot bear to think about the future, if he has one.
I recommend Code Orange for middle school aged kids. It seeks out realistic fiction fans and brings in opinions about what could happen in the near or not so near future. This thrill ride predicts what bioterrorism could bring to the United States and even the world. People do not normally think about bioterrorism in their everyday lives, but it does exist, and one day something will happen. Caroline B. Cooney portrays yet another exciting adventure that sends your mind racing page after page. What is the fate of the world, Mitty Blake?

    Spirit of the Western Frontier

Fifteen-year-old Caroline is leaving her Concord home for the first time to live with her aunt and uncle in Milwaukee, where she will attend Milwaukee Female College. At first, Caroline is frightened by the big, bustling city, and she finds school more challenging than she expected. But she soon begins to enjoy all the excitement Milwaukee has to offer. As the school year comes to a close, Caroline wonders if living in the city is the life for her.

Little City by the Lake is the sixth book in The Caroline Years, an ongoing series about another girl from America's favorite pioneer family.

    5 out of 5 stars A Good Book.......2007-03-10

The story of Laura Ingalls' mother Caroline when she goes to a private school in the city and lives with her aunt and uncle. Quite a contrast the poverty and deprivation of her country life,Caroline goes on picnics, rides a carousel, goes to parties, and attends a fancy private school. Her uncle runs a printing press.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the bunch.......2007-02-03

Country mouse meets city mouse. This is my favorite book of all the Little House prequels, showing the stark contrast between life on the frontier and life in Milwaukee, where Caroline's uncle's family enjoys modern conveniences that don't exist 2 generations later in the Rose books in Missouri. It shows Caroline's character, that she would spend the rest of her life farming after being exposed to all the city could offer. Her admiration of her aunt is great foreshadowing to Rose Wilder's admiration of her aunt Eliza Jane.

This book compares well with Betsy in Spite of Herself, in Maud Hart Lovelace's Betsy-Tacy series, where the small-town Betsy spends Christmas in Milwaukee with Tib just after the turn of the 20th century.

    5 out of 5 stars College.......2006-05-07

Fifteen almost sixteen year old Caroline is going to the city to attend "Milwaukee Female College". While she's in the city, she stays with her Aunt and Uncle. Her Aunt takes her to her first restaurant. She gets turtle soup which she finds very well.

If you don't like girl and boyfriends in books at all, you wouldn't like this book because she meets a boy named "James" who she likes a lot.

I personally adored this book. I would definitely recommend this book because I read it three hours straight one day because I couldn't put it down. I finally stopped because my eyes burned.

The age level for this book would probably be, nine years old to adult.

Find out what happens next in Little City by the Lake.

    5 out of 5 stars good book.......2005-03-17

Little City by the lake is one of the best caroline books there is. Its about Caroline going to visit her aunt and uncle in Milwaukee and her going to a school were they teach young girls to grow into women, pretty much. Shes going there so she can fufill her dream of becoming a teacher. She learns that things are much different here in Milwaukee and while she misses her parents a lot she cant not have fun. She even meets a boy named James whose sister is a really big brat. Well anyways you buy this book and I promise you wont be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Little House Series.......2003-08-09

This is such an enjoyable read, definitely the best of the "Caroline years," and maybe even my favorite of the whole Little House series. Unlike many of the hard-time pioneering stories, this one takes a bit of a lighter turn as Caroline goes to live in the "big" city with her aunt and uncle. The city is filled with many new sights and "modern conveniences"--even indoor plumbing--and new experiences such as dances, restaurants, and an all-girls school where Caroline studies to be a teacher. I can't wait for another book in the series to be published, so I can see what happens next!

5 out of 5 stars A call to educators everywhere!.......2007-07-29

This is a MUST READ for anyone who is genuinely interested in the thinking and impact of educational philosophy. The important choices we make as a society as we educate our children have immeasurable effect on our future. Caroline Pratt was ahead of her time. She calls for an education of children that leads to critical, original and independent thinking - rather than training kids to be passive receivers of meaningless information. We need the progressive movement to re-start and move into the mainstream now more than ever.

Everybody has a guilty secret--but most people tend to want to keep their skeletons well hidden in the closet. Not so Caroline Sullivan, a noted rock journalist in the U.K. In Bye Bye Baby, Sullivan stands up and shouts, "I was a Bay City Rollers fan."

Sullivan readily admits that the Rollers were not musical geniuses. Growing up in Millburn, New Jersey, on a diet of Led Zeppelin, the Who, and Peter Frampton, she recognized skilled musicianship. But she was a fan from the moment she saw BCR on television. "My entire Rollermaniac career was a struggle between knowing they were no Led Zep but loving them anyway."

For her obsession, Sullivan lacks even the excuse of extreme youth. Age 15 in 1975, when the Rollers made their first appearance in the U.S., she and her 16-, 17-, and 19-year-old friends--the self-proclaimed "Tacky Tartan Tarts"--were already older than the average Roller fan. But she was no average fan: "I love them desperately. For four years I lived for them. It's not a pretty story."

But it is a funny story. Bye Bye Baby tracks the history of the band, from their unassuming beginnings as the Saxons to the top of the U.S. charts with "Saturday Night"--and their inevitable decline. It also traces the antics of a group of dedicated fans who would do anything to get close to their idols--turning up at airports at the crack of dawn, wild car chases through city streets, elaborate subterfuges with hotels, airlines, and PR companies. "We were a bit like those dogs who chase cars--what would they do if they caught one?"

In the end, Sullivan did catch one--though only for a brief time (and she's gentlewoman enough never to expressly name which one). And she, her fellow Tarts, and the Rollers all moved on. But in Bye Bye Baby, Caroline Sullivan tells a funny and touching story--and pays homage to the band she once loved. --Sunny Delaney

    Book Description

Funny, poignant, and totally original--this story of one girl's love affair with the Bay City Rollers is a brilliant portrait of an era.

'I loved them desperately. For four years I lived for them. It's not a pretty story.'

Bye, Bye Baby is the true tale of a passionate obsession with possibly the most untalented bunch of musicians in the history of rock and roll. Even in their heyday, Leslie, Eric, Woody, Alan, and Derek of the Bay City Rollers were hideously uncool among everyone but fourteen-year-old girls. Their tartan knickerbockers and striped socks were sneered at, while their feeble teenybopper music was ridiculed.

And yet for Caroline Sullivan, a teenager in suburban New Jersey, these pasty-faced Scottish youths ruled her heart. Over four hot summers from 1975 to 1979, Sullivan and her band of lust-crazed friends, the Tacky Tartan Tarts, crisscrossed the United States in the Rollers' wake, staking out airports and hotels, tricking airline clerks and wheedling information out of bodyguards and PR companies-all in pursuit of that one big night.

Bye Bye Baby is a confessional memoir that invites the reader into some of Sullivan's most excruciatingly embarrassing moments. More than just an uproarious tale of teenage passion and teen-adulation, it is also an inspired exploration of the intimate bonds that tie teenage girls.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars excellent book for anyone who loved the rollers.......2007-01-07

Another book I could not put down and went through in a few readings. Great stories. Really brought back memories of the 70's and the rollers

4 out of 5 stars Fun if you've ever had an all emcompassing teen star crush.......2006-08-19

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, but once I got a couple of chapters into it, I had an epiphany. Caroline Sullivan and her Tacky Tartan Tarts could have been me and my friends had we had the means to follow any of the teen idols we adored. That's when for me the story stopped being about the BCR and started being about a slightly tilted mirror image of myself. If you go into to this thinking you're getting great insight into Leslie, Eric, Woody, Derek, Alan et al, then this isn't the book for you. If you want to remember the pure joy you experienced in loving these guys, and you're not afraid of taking off the blinders and seeing how they saw you in return, then get this book. Thanks, Caroline, for the memories and sharing the mirror!

5 out of 5 stars This is IT IT IT!.......2006-08-13

This is the book to read if you ever thought you'd found the rock star that you were meant to love for life! Fantastic tale of obsession and fear and joy and fun and desperation. Kudos for this honest and grand story.

    5 out of 5 stars Ahhh...the memories!.......2005-05-03

Okay...it was just great fun to read the memories of another Bay City Roller fan who actually had the resources and, well, nerve to go chase them down. It was a superb trip down memory lane ... well written, funny, sad, absolutely loved it. The Bay City Rollers took over two years of my life as a teenager ... if you liked them, you were nothing short of obsessed with them. Great job, Caroline ... thanks for such a wonderfully inspired read.

    4 out of 5 stars Absolutely mortifying.......2005-05-01

Well sure, hardcore BCR fans are going to hate this book-- but don't let that put you off this magnificently self-mortifying book. Caroline Sullivan nails the illogic of teen obsession so well I squirmed (wasn't BCR for me, fortunately-- it was the Who-- there but for the grace of god). She knew BCR were hacks and grossly untalented. She had otherwise great taste in music. And yet... and yet... Buy this book. Treasure it. And make sure to hand it down to your daughter when she gets caught up in the latest manufactured pop-- boy band-- hysteria juggernaut.

Japan Towards Totalscape presents Japanese architecture, urban design, and landscape architecture within the cultural context of present-day Japan. Rather than presenting projects as autonomous entities, the emphasis here is on the relationship between architectural and urban projects and their direct and indirect surroundings. In the last decade, building activity in Japan has spread out from the metropolitan centers into less developed provincial regions. In view of this development--and the increasing attention given to environmental issues in general, the relationship between architecture and its environment is given special emphasis here. Along with essays by prominent critics, historians, economists, and designers from Japan and around the world, Japan Towards Totalscape features extensive documentation of more than eighty different projects from leading Japanese architects of various generations over the past ten years, including Itsuko Hasegawa, Atelier Wow, Tadao Ando, Jun Aoki, Shigeru Ban, C + A, F.O.B.A., Toyo Ito, Jun Tamaki, and Riken Yamamoto, among others.

While this book is small in size it is large on content with great pictures of many Mayan sites. There are also many pictures from early expeditions that give you a real understanding of what these famous sites were like when first discovered. I have been to many of these places all over the Mayan lands but had not seen these early photos. There is a lot of information in this book for anyone who wants an overview of Mayan history, lands and sacred sites. I highly recommend it. Larry Schumacher

First published in 1912, the novel hit Cody, Wyoming like a bombshell.

Caroline Lockhart used her pen to lampoon and criticize the social pretensions and sometimes questionable business practices of Cody residents as the town grew from a few shacks to almost a boomtown.

Lockhart's ire is focused on Dr. Frances Lane, the central figure of the novel. Lane is portrayed as a grasping, greedy incompetent with non-conformist sexual preferences. The doctor, to whom Lockhart often referred as "Shady Lane," was much-loved by many in Cody. Caroline Lockhart, on the other hand, while a successful novelist, had managed to antagonize her fellow Cody residents, a habit which continued as the years wore on.

The town chose sides. Nearly 100 years later, most longtime Cody residents can still say which side they're on.

The Lady Doc still fascinates. The pace is quick, as is the wit. In short, The Lady Doc has aged well.
