Book Description
Trompe l'oeil murals can turn even the most drab room into a beautiful work of art as enchanting as it is convincing and realistic. Now readers can learn how to capture that magic with The Art of Trompe l'oeil Murals.
Master muralist Yves Lanthier has decorated the homes of celebrities with his breathtakingly true-to-life paintings, but readers don't have to be rich or famous to benefit from his expertise. Step-by-step illustrations let readers watch as Lanthier's work comes alive, and will inspire them to create lush, highly sophisticated murals of their own using simple elements.
Seeing is believing, and this is one book readers won't want to take their eyes off of!

Excellent.......2006-07-03
I loved this book and although I would have liked more instruction on painting some of his illusions, I am quite happy with what the author did include. Great photos of his completed works.
Very inspiring.......2006-06-19
I found this to be a wonderful book and will give it often as gifts.
Just Okay.......2006-05-04
I mistakenly thought this was a Graham Rust book. I don't buy this type of book thinking I will be a grand muralist. I buy them for high-end decoupage images. I rip the book apart and use the images. This book did not meet my needs. I found the images bland. Again, I do not buy these books for the intended purpose so keep this in mind
Designer.......2006-04-14
This is a very nice coffee table book, and for a beginning art novice there are some "secrets". But, for artist with general high school level education this is little more than a nice picture book.
There is no discounting Yves Lanthier's skill or excellent creative ability but the few tips he gives are not for creating the Trompe L'oeil ceilings he exhibits in the book. Rather he shows simple stone / marble technique, a basic wall effect and basic light shading in the last fifteen pages of the book.
This is not a book the speaks to basic line and eye illusion of ceiling depth which I was looking for.
"to fool the eye or to fool yourself?.......2006-02-20
"To trick the eye" if that is your intention be objective ... this people do not" fool the eye"... they fool themselves, and you.
Book Description
Graham Rusts new collection of more than 100 murals and trompe loeil decorations. Nearly 20 years after its first publication, Graham Rusts The Painted House has become an invaluable sourcebook of images for interior designers, artists, and students. As with The Painted House, Rusts intention is to provide designs for copying as much as inspiration, so each drawing is reproduced in as much detail as possible. Classical and modern images mingle in this collection, which includes landscapes, animals, fish and flowers, baskets, pots, drapery, trellises, and foliage. revisiting the Painted House is a tour de force of sketches, drawings, and completed works, destined to become a classic. Rust is well known for his hugely successful original The Painted House and The Painted Ceiling.

Inspiring.......2007-03-02
This book is a terrific idea generator and inspiring for the mural painter or for those who wish to commission a mural. Examples are plentiful and executed at a very high level using simple elements.
maybe i am just too jaded...........2006-08-31
I was so wowed by Graham Rust's first two books, that I expected more from this one. Not so many projects in this book. However, I do love his sketches, and I appreciate the number of maquettes he included of designs he was *going* to paint, but didn't get to. In fact, I'd love to see a book of just his watercolor studies.
Graham Rust has done it again!.......2005-12-28
This is an invaluable resource for muralists and trompe l'oeil artists, as well as a beautiful coffee table book for people who appreciate the arts. It consists of 7 chapters featuring the murals of several different rooms of the house including staircases. All of the projects are new and not recycled from his previous releases. Unlike the other books by this artist this book features room shots of the drawing stage (before paint is applied), as well as a section which walks the reader through the steps of a mural panel from start to finish. There are also a few pages dedicated to working method and color choices. However, this book is primarily an idea book and not an instructional manual. The only thing I would like to see more of are photos of the finished murals rather than just the renderings in watercolor.
This book is definately worth having as a part of your personal or professional library. Bravo!

What a waste of money..........2003-04-05
I bought this book hoping for some good ideas and a little inspiration. Instead I got book full of so-called murals and tompe l'oeil that the average person would never use.
Some of the projects in this book are so rudimentary and plain ugly (including a Q-Bertesque wall) that I am embaressed to say I own this book. Yeesh!
How to Paint Murals if you are expierienced!!!.......2002-12-03
I purchaced this book to get another perspective on painting murals. I am a beginner and I found that only the mid to advanced artist, would enhance their ability to do murals. This book is not for beginners!!! I have since purchaced other books that deal with all levels from the beginner to the advanced and felt I could follow and learn more as I gain confidence and expierience. I have not opened the book since, Maybe in 5 years I may relate more to it. Sorry. JR
not what I was looking for.......2002-09-19
I purchased this book hoping to get some good pointers on how to move from landscape painting into the mural stage, but I found the book quite simplistic. It would be a great guide if you are wanting a fast, simple, stencil-look, but not for the serious artist.
How to Paint Murals, etc. by V. Ellerton.......2002-03-20
This book has lovely pictures - it definitely is helpful in determining how to paint certain types of simplistic murals, but is not detailed enough for intense scenes, skies, landscapes, etc. A good book to start out with if you are interested in how to paint murals.

Amazing works that require study to be believed.......2007-01-10
This is simply a fantastic book of the art of muralist I've grown to admire over the years. After following his work on the web and around California and other states, I was very excited to find a book devoted to his work alone. And I was not disappointed. The quality of the text and images is superb as well. And as an artist I frequent the book to get those creative juices flowing.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Trompe l'oeil and murals.
World famous muralist has roots in Chico, California.......2006-09-08
Author Kevin Bruce writes that he first met John Pugh in a Los Gatos pub in 1984. The two became fast friends, and now Bruce has expanded his Stanford University master's thesis on seven of Pugh's murals into a breathtaking study of 35 of Pugh's finest works. "The Murals of John Pugh: Beyond trompe l'oeil" ($35 in hardcover from Ten Speed Press) features stunning full-color spreads of Pugh's art along with telling close-ups of areas the eye might well miss.
The term "trompe l'oeil" means "trick of the eye," and it's applied to two-dimensional art that fools the eye into seeing a three-dimensional space. Though such techniques were practiced in ancient Greece, as Bruce notes in his historical overview, Pugh's real precursor was the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, who in 1931 "produced a trompe l'oeil mural ... at the California School of Fine Arts" that saluted "the 'skyscraping' construction in the United States."
Pugh himself got his start at Chico State University majoring in art. In his senior year he received a commission "to create a mural on a wall of Taylor Hall, which housed, most appropriately, the Chico State Art Department." As Bruce writes, "Begun in the fall of 1980 and completed in the spring of 1981, this mural would receive international recognition and launch Pugh's career in a spectacular fashion." The mural was called "Academe" (acrylic on concrete, 24 feet by 36 feet).
Bruce writes that "at Taylor Hall, Pugh's first step was to establish a site-specific conceptual scheme: 'I kept looking at the wall thinking of how to best reveal in a mural the meaning of the art building both architecturally and conceptually.' He decided that the best symbol to accomplish this dual statement would be to 'go all the way back to the original Doric-style Greek column. ... My intention was ... to tap into the concept of the Greek academe as the essence of our western educational system'."
Rather than simply paint a realistic-looking series of columns, Pugh was influenced by a dream to "break open" the wall on Taylor and, as Bruce puts it, "fill this fictive space with relevant narrative creations -- intended to engage the viewer on deeper levels."
It is this narrative element in Pugh's work that sets it apart from mere trickery. Since his Chico State experience Pugh has painted many public art pieces, murals for hospitals, parking garages and libraries that attract the mind as well as the eye. Some are controversial, like his 2005 piece, "Drain," in Bishop, which evoked strong emotions about the "water wars" in the late 1900s. Other pieces, such as the mural in a San Jose café, "Art Imitating Life, Imitating Art, Imitating Life," are stunningly complex in their narratives.
"The Murals of John Pugh" includes chapters on his studio, techniques and future projects, a fitting 3D tribute to a visionary artist -- which is no illusion at all.

Something to Aspire to.......2002-09-20
This book (as well as the author's website and training classes) are for the more advanced artist or professional painter. Her work is absolutely beautiful, and achievable if you have some artistic talent. Consider this book after you've had some experience with stencils and general painting techniques. For beginners, try "Stenciling on a Grand Scale" by Linda Buckingham if you are looking for a less complex entry into the world of trompe l'oeil using stencils.
However -- if you're ready for a challenge, this is an outstanding volume!!
Absolutely essential to helping me with my project!.......2002-03-05
I have a lot of creative energy and when I decided to try theorem stencilling, I bought several different books. However, this one book is the one that I constantly refer to to help me with my projects. It is clear and easy to follow with good instructions and pictures. If you are just starting out, this is the first book to buy. I also recommend her videos, which are the best on the market.
Interesting but not indepth........2001-12-06
If you want to paint what she suggest it is fine. But if you want to create your own paintings then you need a different book.
Great Book.......2001-11-14
This is a great book and give's easy to follow instructions. However, even though the instructions are given quiet well you better have some real talent to paint the way they tell you in the book. Beautiful color and idea's in this book. I am glad I purchased it a good value for the money.
Trompe L'Oeil beginner.......2001-10-26
Great book for beginners or those with some experience in dabbling with stencils like myself. The ABSOLUTE BEST is the great list of web sites in the Resource section of the book. I have found GREAT information on these sites as well as some SUPER stencil stores. This is a must for those fellow stencilers who want to graduate to more creative and challenging works but feel they don't have the creative talent or "juices" like ME!!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!.......2006-10-05
The thing that makes this book great, is that Royals tells you the exact type and name brand of paints to purchase in order to achieve these effects. Showing a color of a "tan" may not be the color you need to achieve certain results, because there are several tans. She shows you the stencils used and takes you step by step. It helps to know a little about shading and highlighting to get the results you're after. Very, very happy with this book. Great price also.
Mouth Droppingly Beautiful.......2005-12-07
This is my first book by this author and I was blown away. I am not a big fan of the folk-art type of decor BUT there are only a couple of examples of that style in this book. The remainder designs would rival Debbie Travis'.
Where do I start? Her freeform stencil of the grapevines and scrolls is one of the prettiest examples of layering of stencils. I think why I like her is that it's MUCH MORE realistic looking than most of the stencil art out there. I think it must be her technique.
My favorite part of the book is from chapter 3 to the end of the book. The photos are great in showing how to do each step. A lot of embossing and faux fabric techniques that look exactly like damask and other patterned fabric. It is really amazing. Now don't get me wrong, I did not like every wall in this book. The Batik was not for me, only because it looked too "country" for my taste, but again, the technique could be used for a different design. The Oriental Brocade was a little too much for me.
This author got it right in how to demonstrate the steps. They are all numbered in order and the pictures clearly demonstrate the technique. She even has a technique that looks like crewel embroidery. To me, the best techniques in the book were:
~Embossed Leather - looks so real. I think I am going to try it in my husband's study
~Decorative Carved Dado - it REALLY looks carved
~Faux Stone Tile
~Carved Stone Frieze
~Velvet Embossing
~Printed Linen
~Damask - done is a beautiful tone-on-tone
~Shimmering Silk
If I had just looked at the pictures, I would have said, "How beautiful! Wish I could do that," but with the explicit details and instructions, I really think I can.
Well worth the money and I plan on looking up more of this auhor's books.
Awesome book.......2005-08-02
I have one of this author's previous books and I loved it. This book has some awesome ideas for authentic looking finishes using stencils. I am amazed at how great these finishes look and can't wait to try my hand at them.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book on Trompe L'Oeil artists, their murals and history.......2005-12-31
I initially picked this book thinking it was an instructional manual. It is not. What it has are beautiful photographs of various famous and not so famous trompe l'oeil artists' works. It includes historical background, descriptions of some of the art but best of all the glorious works of art themselves. I do think this is a wonderful book for the advanced artist, but it is definitely eye-candy worth having in your library.
Excellent book for going to the next step........2001-06-09
Although there is a need for beginning trompe l'oeil painters, it was great to have a book that takes the next step. Even a beginner can get a better idea of what is out there. I will enjoy this book for some time. This book helps with examples of scale, and depth perception to further increase the believability of the illusion. Great book!
Superb!.......2000-09-03
As an artist, researcher and lecturer on Trompe l'oeil past and present, Ms Wrigley's collection includes some of the best of the best of contemporary work. I only wish she had included more.
Wonderfully illustrated book for experienced artists........1999-09-27
Although beautifully illustrated and inspiring, this book did not provide any helpful, basic information that I needed to get started in the art of trompe l'oeil.
Inspiring images for students of trompe l'oeil........1998-07-04
As a student of trompe l'oeil I purchased this book hoping to get new ideas and inspiring images. This book provides just that. I had to order two more copies for my art teacher and her assistant. The photographs alone makes the book worth ordering.

Book Description
Contemporary trompe l'oeil artist Richard Haas transforms the drab exteriors of neglected buildings into breath-taking facades. "The City is my Canvas" documents his important projects of the last two decades in lavish double-page spreads which illustrate the 'before' and 'after' phases of each site.
Customer Reviews:
Whoops, There's Not Really A Door There.......2002-03-23
Richard Haas is a trompe l'oeil artist (a style of painting that gives an illusion of photographic reality). Not content with the usual practice of painting to canvas, he applies his art to the sides of buildings. He takes boring, blank building walls and transforms them into unbelievable elegance. Adding realistic looking windows to these walls is child's play to him. His true talent lies in creating three-dimensional scenes. What was once bare brick is now fully windowed with a grand curved stairway entrance complete with sculptures and fountains.
A dreary Con-Ed substation comes alive with a new architectural style. Windows and doors appear, and the crowning touch is an open courtyard that penetrates the entire building and shows the Brooklyn Bridge behind it - remember this is a flat brick wall.
The photographic realness is truly awesome. The book is full of high quality color prints on glossy paper. If you like photography, art, and architecture, then this is a must read book.
Excellent photos.......2001-07-28
Richard Haas is an extraordinary artist who uses buildings rather than conventional materials for his artwork. His work is displayed on historic buildings in some of the world's greatest cities. Because of his art, some of these buildings have been saved from the wrecking ball. Not only is Mr. Haas's work exciting and interesting to look at, but it also brings life back to aging cities. Definitely a great coffee table book.
