Exactly what I needed.......2007-08-15
I purchased this book earlier this summer and couldn't be more pleased with the information it contains. I needed some inspiration to "see" things differently to make my photographs more dramatic. Bryan's writing and assignments in this book really changed the way I look at the composition of a scene and the way I see colors and how they compliment each other. My photos have improved A LOT since applying some of the principles written about in this book.
Good deal.......2007-08-10
I found the information in the book worth money I paid. I love photography but something was missing in getting appealing result with my photos. This book fills some holes in my amateur knowledge and also opened my mind to different thinking and approach. Good examples of right and wrong, nice recommendations. Specialy I live author's good sense to explain observation techniques with everyday and real life situations.
I'm still not done, searching for another book.

good experience, did not speed in sending and prefered no shippimg. I deal with Amazon and they always take care of me
Nice balance of creative & technical advice.......2007-07-26
This book delivers on its promise to teach you how to see the world in ways that will lead to better photos. The examples (photographs and commentary) are inspiring and the author provides enough details about technique so you know how he took the picture but you're not overwhelmed. It is an enjoyable read and I like to go back and look at the examples again and again. I only wish the book were longer, I was sorry when I finished it.
Absolutely worth it!.......2007-06-20
I've been shooting for a few years now and felt I needed something to take me to the next step. While this isn't a 100% solution to that problem it definitely is a huge step in the right direction. This book has opened my thinking to different ways of composing, and in general really helped me to see the bigger picture while shooting. All of the 100+ photos in the book give the details of the exposure which is a huge help in and of itself.
Highly recommended for the avid hobbyist to semi pro and even down to the mom or regular guy/girl who just want to take better pictures.
Book Description
This book helps readers bridge the gap between simply memorizing or blindly accepting information and the greater challenge of critical analysis and synthesis. It teaches them to respond to alternative points of view and develop a solid foundation for making personal choices about what to accept and what to reject as they read and listen. Chapter titles include: The Benefit of Asking the Right Questions; What are the Issue and the Conclusion?; What Are the Reasons?; What Are the Value Conflicts and Assumptions?; Are There Any Fallacies in the Reasoning?; How Good Is the Evidence: Intuition, Appeals to Authority, and Testimonials?; and What Reasonable Conclusions Are Possible?. For any critical reader who wants to enhance and develop better reasoning skills in order to make rational decisions.

did not come very quickly--wasn't even sent out until about 5 days after I placed the order. in very good condition though.
Great book.......2007-09-05
This book is a must have for every rhetoric class! Easy to read and understand, best tool for a student.
Good questions. Very helpful indeed........2007-04-03
I strongly agree with the author on pg 13, that "by the end of the book, you should know when and how to ask these questions productively (elaborated through individual chapters):-
1. What are the issues and the concclusions?
2. What are the ressons?
3. Which words or phrases are ambiguous?
4. What are the value conflicts and assumptions?
5. What are the descriptive assumptions?
6. Are there any fallacies in the reasoning?
7. How good is the evidence?
8. Are there rival causes?
9. Are the statistics deceptive?
10. What significant information is omitted?
11. What reasonable conclusions are possible?
Of course, a compilation of good questions doesnt qualify it to be a good book. Indeed, the samples and stories well illustrate the principles and concepts behind. The discussions on various fallacies are marvelous, including:-
Ad hominem: An attack, or an insult, on the person, rather than directly addressing the person's reasons.
Slipperly Slope: Making the assumption that a proposed step will set off an uncontrollable chain of undesirable events, when procedures exist to prevent such a chain of events.
Hasty Generalization: A person draws a conclusion about a large group of based on experience with only a few members of the group.
Causal Oversimplification: Explaining an event by relying on causal factors that are insufficient to account for the event or by overemphasizing the role of one or more of these factors.
Confusion of Cause and Effect: Confusing the cause with the effect of an event or failing to recognise that the two events may be influencing each other.
Neglect of a common cause: Failure to recognize that two events may be related because of the effects of a common third factor.
Post hoc: Assuming that a particular event, B, is caused by another event, A, simply because B follows A in time.
............
In short, an excellent food for thought. Highly recommended!
p.s. I like the following story on pg 137 the most.
"After carefully conditioning a flea to jump out of a box following the presentation of a loud noise, the researcher removed the first pair of legs to see what effect this had. Observing that the flea was still able to perform his task, the scientist removed the second pair of legs. Once again noting no difference in performance, the researcher removed the final pair of legs and found that the jumping behaviour no longer occurred. Thus, the investigator wrote in his notebook, "When all the legs of a flea have been removed, it will no longer be able to hear."
Asking the Right Questions: A Guide to Critical Thinking .......2007-03-09
An excellent book on the subject of reflective thought and criticism. Moreover, this book was more concise and illustrative than others I have read on the subject. This book includes many helpful case examples of short one and two paragraph essays which are analyzed critically for assumptions and fallacies in reasoning. If you needed to buy (and keep) just one book on the subject of critical thinking - this one should be it.
A balanced and informative guide.......2006-08-21
I found Asking the Right Questions (ARQ) to be a very balanced and thorough approach to critical thinking. I am an electrical engineer by profession... I am well-regarded by my peers as an careful thinker; however, I have found myself frustrated at times when discussing controversial issues with friends... some lines of thought don't ring true, but are nonetheless hard to refute. After reading ARQ, I found that these dilemmas are frequently either the result of not agreeing on the definitions of ambiguous terms (e.g. oppression, sexism, racism) or on some logical fallacy that was used. This has made a quite difference in my ability to discern the issues at hand.
ARQ uses a systematic list of questions to review the proposed thesis. These questions are designed to help you understand their conclusion, and evaluate their supporting evidence. Throughout the book, you are encouraged to set your own biases aside in favor of rationally evaluating the evidence. Furthermore, you receive some brief instruction on typical logical fallicies. In particular, Ad hominem attacks (i.e. attacks on the character of participants) are addressed; however, blatant character references are just beginning of an ad-hominem attack. Many times discussions get sidetracked by implicit accusations about a person's character. As an example, this statement (greatly simplified here) was used on me in the past, "you couldn't possibly be able to think critically, because your spiritual convictions make you biased." Until I read ARQ, I had a hard time realizing that this is actually a diversionary tactic used to sidetrack the discussion. If I accept this "evidence", the issue now becomes my credibility, instead of discussing my actual position on the issue.
Another good point the authors make is that that the mere existence of a logical fallicy should be not used as a means to halt discussion.
Finally, this book doesn't try to give you the "right answers" to controversial issues. They teach you how to find those answers on your own. In many cases, there are no right or wrong answers... simply a difference in the core values of the individuals.
I have been very pleased with the thoughtful approach that ARQ uses. I believe that every high-school and college student should be required to read it.
Book Description
This brief version of the bestselling crosscurricular classic retains its hallmark coverage of sourcebased writing skills combined with five popular readings chapters. This portable version represents a carefullychosen selection from the original edition, with five (of the original seven) readings chapters included in their entirety. The abbreviated rhetoric section still covers the skills of summary, critique, and synthesis, taking students stepbystep through the process of writing papers based on source material. Students then put these skills to practice on thematicallylinked essays on provocative topics in the disciplinespecific readings chapters. A stronger focus on argumentation addresses the trend found in today's composition classrooms. Individuals interested in writing from sources and academic writing in different disciplines.

Convoluted Nightmare -just terrible.......2007-03-02
I'm currently using this for a freshman English course, and I find it is a complete mess. There are historical mistakes (claiming Cicero was the greatest writer of the Roman Empire -when Cicero wrote during the Republic), spelling errors, and even grammatical errors (take the title of Chapter 4 for instance: "Types of Synthesis: Explanatory and Argument" -has the author ever run into the term parallelism?).
The book is full of redundancies and proprietary terminology. Some of the concepts are barely explained, others are beaten to death. The writing style is not consistent, leading to the suspicion that many people had their hands in this one -perhaps "authors" in India. Some of the exercises are barely comprehensible. For instance:
"Look over the preceding readings and make a list of the ways they address the overall topics of computers, communication, and relationships. Make your list as detailed as you can. Then write several lists grouping together the readings that deal with similar aspects of the overall topics" (108).
We really don't want our students writing like this, so the last thing we should do is expose them to a textbook like this.
Some of the reading selections are good, and others are vapid, pointless, and generally worthless. Essays about dirty dorm rooms and lack of parking spaces behind the gym -oh yes, this is really provocative.
I challenge anyone to find me a worse textbook.
Great Service.......2007-02-24
Received book within a week of purchase. Book in excellent condition. Great Service!
Good for Academics.......2006-03-27
The book provides quality information about research papers and topical essays that effectively demonstrate the many major parts of a research paper. It focuses on summary, synthesis, critique, and analysis; the inside cover gives the reader an easy to read summary of the contents. While the subject matter of writing papers is fairly dry, the information contained in the essays is somewhat interesting.
The best apparatus out there.......2002-10-24
This cut down by more than half the time it has taken my students to learn to write summaries, integrate sources, understand argument, and write syntheses.
Many of the readings are also interesting and productive, especially those on Folklore and Obedience to Authority. I'd teach it in combination with a course reader, though, since there's almost no attention to the process of helping students find their voice and write more beautiful prose.
But no one book can do everything, and I plan to keep teaching this one. My students like it too -- with its focus on arguable ideas and the wonderful step-by-step breakdown of the writing process.

Customer Reviews:
Middling quality.......2007-05-21
A decent book, but flawed in a few ways. Provides enough information about the test itself, but focuses more on practice tests - which is probably the best way to prepare.
However, the practice tests are mediocre at best. The multiple-choice sections are decent, but a number of the questions are a bit iffy. Each practice test includes answers and explanations. The explanations are frequently insufficient; often they would say no more than "Answer D is the only correct answer choice". This isn't an explanation - it's a restatement of the answer. Of course, many of the explanations were good; a few even detailed why each particular answer choice was wrong. However, I encountered far more vague explanations than thorough explanations. The book also fails to deal with documentation questions on the multiple choice. Each practice test includes one or two, but when I took the AP there were four or five documentation questions. Furthermore, these questions were more varied than the practice ones. The CliffsAP book failed to adequately deal with this aspect of the test.
CliffsAP did even worse on the free-response section. The practice tests failed to represent the basic format of the free-response: one synthesis essay, one rhetorical analysis, one argumentation. Many of the practice tests presented two rhetorical analysis essays or two argumentation essays. Many of the essay prompts feel hastily prepared and poorly designed. The synthesis essays were the worst. Occasionally, the prompt and the sources addressed different issues. On nearly all of the synthesis prompts, the documents were very poorly selected. One essay featured four articles by the same newspaper. Another was comprised primarily of letters to the editor. Actual AP synthesis questions feature a variety of sources; the one I encountered included encyclopedia entries, newspaper articles, and book excerpts, among other sources. The CliffsAP essays were way off target.
Nonetheless, the book helped me prepare for the AP. It did a decent job, but I can't help but feel like it could've been far better written. In the end, I regret buying this book. I don't know what the Princeton Review book is like, but I can't imagine it's worse than this.

The BEST help you will ever need!.......2006-12-20
I used the the first edition of this book with my students for years and the newly-updated edition is even better than before! VERY practical advice and REAL examples from the author's students, so it's not some adult trying to be a teenager. Don't let the Cliff's title fool you--this is quality instruction from an experienced educator!

A good guide on how to analyze ideas and synthesize new ones.......2007-05-01
Hart's material will benefit anyone who needs to develop and demonstrate their expertise on a topic. He describes how the review contributes to the defense of a research topic and its findings, at the master's and doctoral levels. He presents examples of what thesis and dissertation boards look for in research proposals and papers.
The book describes techniques to extract clues about theories and methods a researcher used. Hart provides excellent guidance on how to analyze the literature on a topic, develop a map of ideas, and synthesize a new contribution.
Anyone who wants to develop their skills as a researcher, or student, should definitely purchase this book. I also shared many of this book's insights with my friends, who are not researchers.
Although I strongly recommend the book, I only rate it 3 stars. The book is unorganized, and the writing is poor.
In an example from Chapter 4, Hart presents a table of 19 common fallacies. The first column presents the type of fallacy (in no logical or methodical order). He titles the second column "What it is and how to avoid it" but only the first entry presents any "how to avoid it" data. The remaining 18 entries have no advice on avoidance.
I also felt some diagrams present no useful information; and his prose rambles and repeats itself. In short, Hart gives us dynamite information, but it is frustrating to sort through its sloppy presentation.
Too little for the price.......2007-02-08
Foudn the text minimally helpful. Not full of insight but just common sense.
Cost is too high for the return.
Great Resource for the Dissertation.......2005-08-09
I found this book to be a great resource as I am doing research for my dissertation. It has helped me to look at the lit review in a new light and has given me several ideas of others avenues to search.
so good my advisor is going to use it .......2005-07-18
This book is great. It has all you need to complete a research paper at any level. I used it for my bachelor's project which, according to my advisor, is equivalent to a Master's thesis in content requirement. My advisor has asked me to lend him the book so he can use it to revise the current research manual supplied by the college. This book is easy to read and has a lot of useful tables and charts.
Great resource!.......2005-07-09
Great, current resource for writing a lit review. Especially appreciated the specific information about how to analyze and synthesize information.

Book Description
The shortest route to mastering verb conjugations
One of the greatest challenges in learning a language is mastering verb conjugations. The books in the unique Language Verb Drill series make it easier than ever for learners to meet that challenge.
Drilling, whether it's for learning a musical instrument, a sport, or a language, is an essential part of a sound education because repeated, concentrated practice makes specialized skills become second nature.
Unlike most verb books, which tend to concentrate on tables of conjugations, the books in the Language Verb Drills series allow students to focus exclusively on building mastery of verbs without being distracted by other elements of grammar. Combining the features of a workbook and reference manual, they clearly and systematically explain how a verb system works while providing numerous drills for practice. These revised editions of the popular study guides now include a final review section to reinforce the reader's ability to automatically select the correct verb form.

Great Drill Book.......2007-09-02
I purchased this book in anticipation of a trip to Italy 6 weeks after purchase. I spent a year in Italy studying Italian 20 years ago and haven't had much occassion to use my Italian since then. I thought the Italian Verb Drills book would be a great help in refreshing all that I have forgotten. I was right. I love the book. The verbs are categorized by ending and irregularities and then the book moves through various tenses. There is ample discussion of when various tenses should be used. Some of the tenses are more important than others to know and this drill books help you determine which tenses are critical.
I remember best by writing something down. This is a drill book, so there is ample opportunity to write answers and then check them in the back. Exercises include translating into Italian from English and translating into English from Italian.
Even though I have a firm foundation in Italian, I would highly recommend this book for any beginner. Drilling is a good way to memorize the verbs and their tenses. If you purchase a grammar book and vocabulary book to accompany the verb drills, you have a complete learning tool set.
Good listings but flawed instructional layout.......2007-09-02
The good points about this book are that it has plenty of verbs in all the conjugations. The verb classes (-are, -ere, -ire)and the irregulars are covered well. The downside of the book, in my opinion, is its poor instructional design. The index is a glaring example. It does not reference page numbers, rendering it almost must useless as a a look up table for various occurences of verb forms and specifically irregular forms in the text. The reader must literally scour the text to find specific verb information as a result. In terms of content, a good book. As an instructional aid, I have reservations about its design.
One of the best Verb Drill books out there.......2007-05-25
I have been working with this book for months now and have found it a great help in conjunction with the Pimselur Italian cd's for this beginner. The Pimselur cd's are great, but you really need to do some written work so you understand what it is you are listening to and get a better ideal of verb usage. I have purchased several of these types of books, and this one seems to be the best (for me).
Just the ticket.......2007-03-14
Verb forms seemed really scary until I started drilling with this book. Drilling may sound boring but I think it starts setting patterns in my head. Also a great way to just get exposed to more words.
Better With Italian Behind the Wheel Complete.......2006-07-10
I took Amazon's advice and bought Italian Verb Drills to complement my Italian Behind the Wheel Complete Course.
Excellent together.
Italian Verb Drills is a true guide to Italian verbs. What I love about this reference is that there is a complete answer key at the back of the book and that ALL tenses are covered.
What makes this guide so effective with Behind the Wheel Italian Complete is that virtually all of the verb tenses you hear on the CDs you see in the verb book.
The Pimsleur course I used and returned didn't even scratch the surface of the depth and richness of Italian Behind the Wheel Complete so Italian Verb Drills would have been next to useless with it since Pimsleur doesn't cover enough verb tenses and vocabulary to make it worthwhile to buy.
Behind the Wheel Italian Complete 9CDs on the other hand is virtually 'loaded' with verb tenses from the present to the subjunctive. All in one course.
I do heartily recommend you buy Italian Verb Drills if you take on Italian Behind the Wheel Complete.
You'll need it and you will learn faster.

A bit ironic, don't you think?
The Operative Word is "developing" Thinking Skills.......2000-12-14
An excellent book that covers such diverse subjects as critical thinking, observation skills, word usage, communication, facts and reality, inferences, assumptions, opinions, viewpoints, arguments, fallacies, inductive and deductive reasoning, research skills and problem solving. And within each subject is a very well defined and easily understood definition of that subject along with examples of each. The chapter quiz found at the end of each chapter helps to ingrain and reinforce the lesson. The book is insightful and well written. Done with great skill as one is actually able to understand the premise and meaning of each topic/lesson.
