this book is awesome! there are so many projects and all of the doable! the colors, patterns, media and all the embellishments used make you want to do the projects. this one is a keeper for me.

4 out of 5 stars Rice' Is A Very Good Teacher.......2004-07-09

I have taken classes from Rice' and every class has taught me something new and inspired me creatively. I'm an experienced editor and agree better proof reading was needed but her examples and information and her association with other artists included in the book are the most important reason for buying it. If her name is on a book, buy it. She has a new book coming out in October 2004 and I am anxious to buy it too.

5 out of 5 stars this book is worth TEN workshops.......2004-05-01

Overflowing with ideas and insider technique tips, Rice and friends present us with bountiful inspiration in this enthusiastic, well-illustrated book. It's not just a must-read but a must-OWN if you're involved with paper and fiber arts. The tip about silk screen ink (for art on fabric) saved me weeks of reinventing the wheel, and that's just one very small note in a book chock FULL of fabulous ideas and projects. Thank you, Rice!

5 out of 5 stars Stamp Artistry by Rockport Press.......2004-02-21

This book is delightfully full of creative uses of rubber stamps by talented artisans in many mediums. The author has explained every project in easy-to-understand terms. Projects are separated into sections, such as "for the home," which makes it easy to select a project, and each section has a well-written introduction by the author. I didn't find one project I didn't like or wouldn't want to reproduce. The photography is wonderful! Any little petty glitches, which you'll find in any book, are easily overlooked because of the innovative subject matter and the masterful photos. (Even the revered "Chicago Manual of Style" has typos!) If you want something a little different, this is the book I recommend. It's worth every penny I spent on it, and I look forward to more great books by the author!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Projects, Talented Artists, Poor Proofreading!!!!.......2004-01-01

This Instructional Project Book offers wonderful projects by today's renowned top artists in stamping, clay, collage, etc. However typographical errors distract from the step-by-step instructions.
Xyron is one of the most "top of mind" brands in the Arts and Crafts industry, but was referred to as Zyron several times throughout the book. I noticed misspelled words such as Dall instead of Doll and poor sentence structure.
I do not blame the author, but the Publishing House for proofreading errors. This shows lack of knowledge and details for the art form in which they are representing.
When I buy a book of this price point and with step-by-step instructions I expect top-notch editing!!!!

Book Description

A clearly written and meticulously illustrated reference for woodcut techniques and printmaking.

The history of the woodcut goes back over a thousand years. Working carefully with great precision, the woodcut artist carves a mirror image of a design on wood or other suitable material. Then the design is inked and pressed against paper. The technique allows the artist to create an almost unlimited number of impressions of the same work. The precision of the work and the ability of the artist to create multiple impressions allow many fine woodcut artists to create pieces at a reasonable price that an average collector can afford.

The Woodcut Artist's Handbook provides the basics of this craft with a detailed analysis of the tools and the media. Artists can improve or develop considerable skill in this art by following these instructions and helpful tips. Beginners and advanced woodcutters and collectors will gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for this craft and this art.

This profusely illustrated book is ideal for artists, printmakers, designers and collectors.

5 out of 5 stars Woodcut and wood engraving updated.......2006-07-22

Walker has taken woodcut, arguably the oldest of printing techniques, and brought it into the twenty-first century. Albrecht Durer would certainly recognize everything that goes on in a woodcut artist's shop. It's the tools, inks, papers, and especially subject matter that have changed. This book steps clearly through every step, combining very readable text, illustration, and samples of original prints.

The book starts with the block itself. That can be something as homely as a cut slab of potato for a child's effort. It can also be linoleum, a wood plank, or a piece of plywood for regular woodcut. Wood engraving, which differs mainly in the fineness of the cut marks, requires fine, hard surfaces: end-grain boxwood, maple, or cherry in traditional technique, or man-made materials that may be lest costly and more predictable. The rest of the book continues in equally exacting detail: tools and especially their sharpening, cutting with hand or power tools, papers, classic and modern inks, taking the impression with simple or complex presses, and deciding on the edition. Although specimens appear thoughout the book, the last chapter is a gallery that shows the variety of people, techniques, and subjects in contemporary woodcut. Back matter is very helpful: glossary, artists' biographies, bibliography, access to resources, and a helpful index. The resource list may age quickly, as art suppliers come and go, but everything else has lasting value.

There are a few oddities. For example, Walker uses the term "monoprint" to describe images from uniquely inked cut blocks. I can't argue that usage, even though the term is more widely understood to describe prints from inked but uncut surfaces. And, despite otherwise complete coverage of multi-block printing, he omitted the idea of the counterproof. That technique inks the key block and prints it on paper, then uses the paper to transfer wet ink to the blocks to be used for other colors. Although traditional, the technique may lack the precision needed for wood engraving, and may have been overtaken by photocopying and other modern techniques.

I recommend this to anyone who appreciates woodcut, as an observer or as an active printmaker. It's beautifully printed and bound, and, despite the antiquity of the technique, completely up to date.

5 out of 5 stars Ever print artist wannabe needs to read.......2006-03-15

I found the previous reviews to be helpful and true. I read it cover to cover immediately and can't wait to try some of the tips and to find a couple of tools I found quite interesting.

5 out of 5 stars A practical handbook and valuable reference work.......2005-12-14

A thoroughly engaging and accessible work, beautifully illustrated with many outstanding examples of woodcuts and wood engravings. Most readers will be itching to try their hand at this craft well before they've finished the book, and George Walker provides plenty of information to help you do just that. The writing is clear and readable, with a good balance of background information, practical tips and instructions, and resources for further reading. Although Walker makes no bones about the difficulty of mastering this craft, he encourages beginners to play and experiment, and gives many pointers to help you avoid the pitfalls. Obviously, his years of teaching experience have given him some insight into what people find trickiest about making printing blocks. He not only provides encouragement, he even gives instructions for repairing any mistakes you might make!

Other sections deal with how to select and care for tools (including how to keep them good and sharp); the pros and cons of different materials for blocks (various kinds of wood, linoleum, other synthetics) and different types of ink; choosing paper; ideas for arranging your workspace; how to make prints by hand or with a press (including instructions for making your own printing press!); and health and safety issues. He also suggests some interesting ways of using your finished prints, in addition to giving tips for mounting and storing them. The illustrations Walker has selected are both interesting and useful: he gives many details about the different artists represented, and the tools, techniques, inks, and papers they use to make their prints. With examples of so many different styles and techniques, you get some idea of the wide range of possibilities to be explored.

The book is rounded out by a glossary, short bios of the artists whose work appears in the book, and a list of sources for info and materials, as well as a bibliography and an index, making it a valuable and inspiring reference for all levels of printmakers and anyone else with an interest in this art. At the same time, it is a well-organized, easy-to-follow manual that can help anyone get started making their own relief prints. Even people who don't yet know that they're interested in woodcuts or wood engravings will be won over by this beautiful and comprehensive book. Highly recommended.

This is a beautiful book, nicely organized. The poetry and folk lore give the reader a peek into a complex and not ofter understood look at Jpanese society. As a printmaker I appreciate the work but loved the layout and the quest the collectors made over two decades to find all 100 of these prints, that are over 100 years old, in pristine condition.

    5 out of 5 stars Moonblocked.......2003-06-12

The Museum of International Folk Art, New Mexico, has all the woodblock prints in the series 100 ASPECTS OF THE MOON by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. During the Edo period, 1600-1868, Ukiyo-e, or woodblock print pictures of the floating world, meant economical, popular art for the Japanese. It was the first Japanese art in which artists didn't have to depend on a few elite clients. Instead, they found success in mass production, for city shops, open-air kiosks and street vendors.

At first, Yoshitoshi was caught up in the brutality of violent times, by printing demons, murderers and warriors. Then, in the 1880s, he took to Western-styled perspective, space and unlikely color combinations. He did all this, though, within limits from Noh drama. Noh's point was the least amount of detail. It was also on a person just before doing something or while going over something from the past. Both were found in Yoshitoshi's moon prints.

With them, he broke ground in such a way as to move the world, what with post-impressionist America and Europe coming upon his prints. For he put the faces of ordinary people onto figures from Chinese, Indian and Japanese pasts.

Before becoming industrialized, Japan had a calendar system based on the phases of the moon. The Japanese still honor the full moon night, known as tsukimi. On August 15th, the Japanese offer dumplings, eulalia and seasonal fruits, to ask for excellent harvests.

Tamara Tjardes has organized Yoshitoshi's prints according to figures from literature, myth and music; the floating world; and battles. From them, one of my two favorite blocks is "Ishiyama moon." Lady Murasaki wrote the world's first novel, in 1021, with her adventures of Prince Genji. Yoshitoshi showed her on the balcony of the Ishiyama temple, moon-gazing while starting to write.

The other's "A country couple enjoys the moonlight with their infant son." A farmer and his wife cradle their infant son. They drink from a kettle of sake. They're framed by the trailing vine of the yugao. Yoshitoshi printed the scene, to honor these lines from his friend, the poet Keika: "Pleasure is this: to lie under the moonflower bower; the man in his undershirt; the woman in her slip"!

      Product Description

From the artist whom Nicholas Basbanes calls the most important book illustrator working in America today comes a primer on the art of wood engraving, a pursuit which one can learn in less than an hour but which one can master only through years of persistence, dedication, and indefatigable energy.

Learning to engrave a block, says Barry Moser, is like learning to play the piano: it is all practice, practice, practice, all teaching the muscles how to perform the basics. At first your every gesture will be halting, labored, and self-conscious; then at last will come the moment when, like Ashkenazy at the keyboard, you can forget about process, about technique, and focus all your mental energy on making art. There are no shortcuts, warns Moser. Mastery comes only with time, work, and repetition. A great number of bad wood engravings must be made before one can expect to make a good one. Once your muscles know how to do their work, once they know how to carve thin white lines into boxwood, your mind will be free to invent.

There is a lifetime of knowledge in this book: how to prepare a printing block; how to think in the medium s properties of line, shape, and ink; how to transfer a drawing onto a block. There is advice, too, on tools: not only on gravers (burins, scorpers, stipplers, and spitzstickers) but also on lights (you ll need a good strong one) and engraving bags (the leather pillows that cradle the blocks as you carve). Here is how to ink, how to choose paper, and how to print. Here is how to fail, how to move on, and how to acquire the habit of work that leads to real achievement.

Wood Engraving is an art lesson and a life lesson. And because it s a book by Barry Moser, it is also a gallery of prints and beautiful to behold.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and daunting, perfect for the serious artist.......2006-11-30

I love this book. Barry Moser is the best woodcut artist alive, and this book is well written, detailed and candid. To read this book is to soak up his secrets of the craft. For any serious woodcut artist (or linocut, stamp cut, or Resingrave artist) this should be required reading.

It is also daunting, in that Moser is a perfectionist. I have been doing cuts for years and have had frustrating problems each time I have tried to bring more detail to my work, and I have long admired Moser's seemingly impossible level of detail. He goes small so well, I couldn't figure out how he managed those tiny lines and miniscule divots. This book shows you exactly how he does what he does, and it is not simple (at least not to me; others may enjoy the thoroughness of the prep work and processes, I may just be too lazy or whiny).

But he has done a lot of the tough work for us. We don't need to go to some obscure shop in London to hunt down the best wood blocks, and we don't need to waste hours of effort with inadequate materials or tools. He gives excellent, inspiring advice, and it has already resulted in a fast, vast improvement in the quality of my work. It has also made me excited about the art form again.

        Book Description

Japanese woodblock prints, or ukiyo-e, occupy a singular position in the lexicon of world art. They enthralled such Western artists as Whistler, Manet, Degas, and van Gogh, and gave rise to a wave of "japonisme" in the salons of Paris, London, and New York that left a lasting impression.

As the successor to previous aristocratic traditions, the ukiyo-e print represents the last flowering of traditional pictorial art before Japan entered the modern era. These "pictures of the floating world" reflected the world of the townspeople of Edo (Tokyo), focusing on the popular entertainments
of the day, landscapes of favored scenic spots, and portraits of well-known geisha, kabuki actors, and sumo stars.

The present volume delves into the history of these unique artistic endeavors, tracing their development from the lavish works commissioned by aristocratic patrons in the sixteenth century to their peak in popularity among the rising merchant class of the flourishing future capital. As the story of
the genre's blossoming unfolds, Mr. Kobayashi's illuminating commentary on all its varied aspects-styles, artists, engravers, printers, and the demands of an insatiable but fickle public-captures the essence of the art and provides a fascinating glimpse into the culture of old Japan. With the large
color plates and numerous detailed close-ups accompanying the text, Ukiyo-e: An Introduction is essential reading for anyone interested in exploring the exotic world of the Japanese print.

The relative ease and low investment that this craft requires attracts many beginners. But the burgeoning sophistication of stamps and related supplies (including a bewildering array of inks and embossing powders) has extended its appeal to experienced artisans and resulted in many advanced techniques, along with increased costs for materials. Fortunately, help is at hand in this wonderful book, which offers a lovely array of projects and thorough information on all the groundwork. Wisely avoiding the cutesy look to which this craft often succumbs, the author provides elegant ideas for rubber stamping gift-wrapping, stationery, home decor, fabrics, and plates, as well as a chapter on holidays and special occasions, supplemented by good, clear photos.

This is the first stamping book I've ever purchased. I'm very happy with my purchase it and highly recommend it! For each project, she clearly explains how to accomplish it; as well as, providing very nice pictures throughout the book!!

4 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners!.......2006-02-17

This book is great for beginners who are still figuring out the differences between the many ink choices out there (a valid question!) and they will certainly find valuable information within these pages.

Those with a little more experience or advanced stampers will likely not find the inspiration for their next great project.

        5 out of 5 stars Teachable Book.......2005-05-30

i use this book as a reference for when i am going to teach a stamping class. it has everything you need for the beginner and is full of fun techniques for the advanced stamper to relearn and to re-do some of their own art. i recommend this book to every stamper especially beginners.

4 out of 5 stars The Guide to stamping.......2002-07-23

This book is excellent for anyone. The pictures are fantastic and Grace Taormina knows how to stamp anything. She is a excellent teacher, and buying this book will certainly be helpful in learning how to stamp.

4 out of 5 stars Great Starter Book.......2001-08-05

Rubber Stamping is a creative, affordable way to personalize your gift giving and home projects. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. For all you Carol Duvall fans, this book was written by Grace Taormina. You may remember her from several of Carol's segments. The projects are exquisite and full-color photographs accompany EACH STEP. As one who considers herself to be somewhat of a stamping novice, I get very nervous when I see a lot of type and no pictures (aside of the one which depicts the final result). This was terrific in that regard. I'll note that I did not read the chapter which covers the basics, as I have had some prior exposure (very minimal) to stamping. I tend to look more at the photos than the prelude.

Now on to the projects: What makes this book stand out in my opinion is the devotion it makes to crafters of different backgrounds who want to try stamping. For instance, I am a quilter, and I was particularly pleased to see a section devoted to those of use who love stitchery (entitled Stamping For Stitchers). I made a very pretty Victorian Posy pillow and a couple of quilted pieces from this section. Other chapters covered Paper Projects, Home Decor, Gift Ideas ,and projects for Holidays and Special Occasions. All in all I thought this was a terrific buy. I felt I got my money's worth after successfully interpreting and completing five projects within 10 days.

        Enjoy.

          Product Description

The work of J. J. Lankes (1884-1960) is regrettably almost forgotten today. This is unfortunate, for in addition to being a certifiable American original, Lankes was a talented artist (arguably the first genuine woodcut artist this country produced), the close friend of poets and writers, and the author of the first reliable and comprehensive book on woodcutting published in North America. This is the first and only volume devoted to his fascinating career, one that highlights and illustrates the variety and the quality of the work he created over forty years. Reading it will be a revelation.

Lankes worked exclusively in the East, and his woodcuts, mostly of scenery and structures, range from northern Vermont to his adopted state, Virginia, with brief excursions into New York and Pennsylvania. Commissioned on a regular basis to illustrate books, he created a number of enduring images, his most famous certainly being the ones used to adorn Robert Frost's poetry. These and the glorious woodcuts he published of Virginia were probably his crowning achievement, but this retrospective contains a complete overview of his work, including his Christmas cards, illustrations of weather sayings, Bucks County stone barns, and his inventive ephemera.

In The Woodcut Art of J. J. Lankes, Welford Dunaway Taylor has painted a rich portrait of a crotchety, unconventional and neglected American artist, and also provided an extensive bibliography of Lankes's published work as well as a collation of his prints. This book, if there is any justice, will restore Lankes s reputation as one of America's foremost graphic artists.

4 out of 5 stars An wonderful book for anyone interested in J.J. Lankes........1999-06-10

Taylor's work is a must for anyone interested in the woodcut print, and especially the work of J.J. Lankes. His biographical sketch of Lankes' life is complete without ponderous detail. The critical summary of his work is also fascinating. But it is the work of Lankes himself, spread liberally throughout the book that gave this reader the greatest delight. I only wish Taylor had included more examples of Lankes' woodcuts! The book itself is a fine example of quality bookmaking. The binding, cover, type face, printing and overall size add to the value.
