Good, but limited in scope.......2007-05-13
I am an older actor (50's) and was looking for something that would give some solid help with good make-up technique, especially with the older face (all of the models are much younger in this book). The price is a little high for a book this short and too much time is given to "fantasy" type faces. Not as useful as I had hoped it would be. If this is a "textbook" it must be for a very limited "overview" type class.
Good choise for beginners.......2006-11-13
This is a good book to introduce you in the world of Stage Makeup. The book has many photos with makeups step-by-step, and good texts. I'm brasilian and it was a suggestion of my makeup teacher, that studied stage and movie makeup in Hollywood. It's a good choice to study this tecniques.
Excellent beginning makeup text.......2006-10-10
I am so happy I stumbled upon this book. I've been teaching stage makeup at various universities for over five years and using the Corson book. This book offers clear, color, step-by-step, examples of the basic makeup techniques I cover in my course. The only other book this easy to follow is Makeup for Theatre, Film, and Television by Baygen and it's out of print. This is definately my new course book.
Great tool for all actors and crew........2006-08-17
This is an excellent book for novice to veteran actors. Also good for makeup/costume crew.
nothing special.......2006-02-25
The design techniques for basic contouring and period make-up are solid and the full color photos are helpful. Also, the author includes solid instructions for tranfering drawn schematics onto the face. The "fantasy" make-up section though is a joke-she showcases design projects from her jr. high/high school classes and many more closely resemble advanced face-painting instead of useful stage techniques. Unfortunately this book is still superior to many beginning stage make-up books on the market.

Geared towards professionals .......2007-08-20
This book is definately geared towards the professional makeup artist. I'm an avid Halloween costumer and wanted to try special effects makeup but this book was over my head. The author assumes that you have some basic knowledge of makeup technique and the lack of color photos makes it impossible for the novice to figure out what he's talking about. I'm thinking of purchasing Laura Thudium's makeup book to learn the basics and then hopefully this book will be more useful.
Not very current..........2007-07-18
This was a good book and gave a lot of technical advice and illustration but it didn't help me as much as I was hoping. It's dated-- now we're having to deal with changes in makeup due to Hi-Def, etc. These are not addressed... nor are many other things that I think are relevant to doing makeup for film/tv in 2007.
Only relevant to FX artists.......2007-05-07
Why didn't I listen to the other reviewers? The tiny section on "beauty" makeup is dated and unhelpful.
The Technique .......2006-06-23
The book makes doing eyebrow shaping look easy...and it not only looks easy- by following a few steps it turns out it IS easy. If you want to learn the basics- buy this book. If you want to do a home makeover- go glamorous, sensual, then fun later on - buy this book. If you want to tune your look a bit- get it! I guess I don't have to go on, but if you are like me and need a bit of instruction and cant afford a makeup artist to be at your beckon call- buy this book.
Mostly Black & White Photos!.......2006-02-03
You would think that a book on makeup -- especially at this price -- would contain many more color photographs. After all, successful makeup is dependent upon illusions of color as well as light and shadow.
That said, I did learn a great deal from the book, particularly the chapter on human aging. This is a good book if you are as interested in makeup theory as you are technique.

Customer Reviews:
Makeup Artists need this book.......2002-10-22
This is a great book for makeup artists, probably not great for the makeup junkie consumer. I learned more in this book then I have in all of the makeup classes I have taken over the years. It is a study book more then a read for fun book, every artist needs to read it.
Good reference material........2000-04-02
Pretty thorough coverage of modern makeup. It doesn't call out the new Hollywood looks in particular, the underlying technique is all there.
Customer Reviews:
It need color pictures so badly!.......2003-11-14
If you think this book would be a good inspiring source for your Halloween costume or for your kids' school show, think again.
The ideas in this book are good but it has several big problems. First, there are no color pictures. Each entity has a hand drawn illustration for the alternation and a two inches high, whole person figure, very bad quality, black and white picture to show the final result. Since most of the costumes here need at lest two pieces of original clothing of different color and style to combine with, only if you saw a lot of board way show and hopefully remember exactly how the major characters' costumes looked like, you probably will be easily confused by those illustrations. Second, a lot of material she used here is originally costume itself (or quite fancy old-style dress to say the least) but not ordinary cast-off clothing you might think you could find in nowadays closet.
A Great Book For The Beginning Costumer.......2002-05-01
I had my doubts at first when the author said she could assemble a costume with just glue, some seam ripping and little to no sewing. Then I saw the costumes. Wow! I just wish the pics were IN COLOR(hint, hint) so I could fully appreciate them. Now were's my glue gun?;-)
$50 Richer!.......2000-08-02
Even though we had never before made a costume in our lives the book allowed both me and my wife to win a local costume contest. The clear and consise directions saved my life when I had to finish my costume the weekend my wife was out of town. And thanks to Ms Rogers we not only impressed our friends, we're $50 richer!
Costuming Made Easy: How to Make Theatrical Costumes from Ca.......2000-06-04
I thought this book was wonderfully written so even somone like me does not sew well, I can still create a costume to die for. I am always making costumes for something, but this book has really opened my eyes to new innovative ways to create something alot nicer than I would ordinarily make. Thank You Barb for the book, it helped me alot and I am sure I am not the only one.

Customer Reviews:
This book still inspires.......2007-04-02
I bought "The Art of Makeup" in 1994 when it was first published. The other day when I was reorganizing my bookcase, I pulled this book off the shelf and found myself captivated by the gorgeous pictures in this book. I find that this book still inspires me.
Admittedly, some of the techniques shown in the book, such as taping and body makeup, are of the "don't try this at home" variety. But there are pictures of pefectly-executed everyday makeup that is wearable without being boring. These don't look one bit dated thirteen years later. There are also pictures of the more exuberant, creative makeup for which Mr. Aucoin was known.
The women pictured in the book run the gamut from supermodels (Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Christie Brinkley, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss among others,) actresses and singers to other women living outside the spotlight like Mr. Aucoin's mother, sisters and friends. Each one looks great. He was able to find and bring out the beauty in each woman.
As a practical matter, there are application techniques ranging from basic to advanced covered in the book. Feature by feature he tells the readers about tools and products available. As a makeup junkie, I would have loved to have seem more of this information.
All these years after this book was published, browsing this book was sort of like visiting an old friend. And it did make me pull out my lipsticks and eye shadows and do a little expirementing on my own.
this is a makeup-ART book.......2006-01-18
This book is so expensive because it is simply an art book, showing Kevyn Aucoin's art. It is not a step by step guide. It's a beautiful book and worth it.
True art in make up.......2005-10-05
While his other books are more of a how to on make up, this is more of an art book than a guide. Kevyn Aucoine was a master of the art, no question, and he made some of the most beautiful faces ever captured on film. The average so and so will never use things like face tape, false eyelashes, and spirit gum. I'm one of the rare few who isn't in theater and uses those things on occation for a fancy dress occation! You have to know what you're doing for some of these looks. Plus, the finished product was meant to be photographed rather than seen by the public in a normal setting. Enjoy the finished products for what they are, but take care if and when putting together.
The worst from the 3.......2005-09-07
Hi, I have all the 3 famous book of Kevyn Aucoin (Making Faces, Faces Forward and this) and this one is the worst. Why is this the most expensive? I don`t understand.
More than a coffee table book.......2003-08-25
Beautiful! I loved this man's work, and this was a perfect showcase for the cream-of-the-crop best photos of his favorite subjects. There are plenty of larger-than-life photos of many celebrities (Susan Sarandon, Brooke Shields, Christy Turlington, Paula Porizkova, and my favorite Canadian (former)supermodel, Linda Evangelista....breathtaking!) There's also a section on basic make-up how-to's and tricks of the trade, and some great pics and anecdotes from him family life. (His mom and sisters were among the first to experience his craft) I bought this back in the mid-90's ... :) A must for anyone who loves make-up and all things beautiful. God bless Kevyn Aucoin, may he rest in peace.... he is missed.

Customer Reviews:
Not great.......2006-11-28
I bought this thinking it might have a few handy tricks and expected all the techniques to be shown as well as the final look. Not so.
There is nothing in here that I have never seen before in a magazine. I probably by about 10 beauty magazines a year.
If you have never worn make-up, it might is not good place to begin, they really don't show enough technique to be useful.
If you want an all in one place book for ideas on how to wear your make up, its not terrible. Just don't expect great step by step photos.

Make up book lover.......2007-07-07
I usually enjoy most makeup books and give them 5 stars. I found this one dated, the pictures are old looking, very costumey or imagey, not real. I was oo bored to read it in detail. It has some valid points which is why I still gave 3 stars
JUDGE THIS BOOK BY IT'S COVER!.......2006-04-11
I bought a few books in an attempt to gain a personal perspective as to how to apply my makeup. This book is a complete waste of money. From start to finish it is nothing more than an ego trip through Linda Mason's career as a Make Up Artist in the 80's. I can't stress strongly enough how utterly useless the looks that she presents are to you and I. I mean, when am I going to walk down the street with 4 different lipsticks on?! As a photographer, I can also say that the first review listed above is inacurate. The images are sloppy and lax. The lighting is incorrect, and for good reason.....to hide the bad job she has done with the make up.
If you want to look like an extra from Miami Vice, then go ahead.....this book is for you.
If you want to just live a normal life without people asking you which tribe you are from, then go elsewhere.
I can recommend Making Faces by Kevyn Aucoin. Great book, lovely guy and looks you can live with. Oh and he has a much clearer section on Smokey Eyes! lol
My copy of Linda Mason's book will be showing on an Ebay website near you soon.
Fun.......2006-03-29
This book is fun. The author shares her story--from being a young girl enchanted by her mother's makeup rituals to a budding makeup artist making mistakes along the way to the now successful artiste. She shares some basic and glamour techniques and devotes a portion of the book to freestyle makeup. There are chapters dedicated to assisting the reader in developing a career as a makeup artist.
This book is enjoyable. The freestyle section is not at all practical but demonstrates the author's free and creative spirit. If you are looking for a make-up practicum, this is definitely not it. While her instructions are minimal, her diagrams are helpful. However, if you want to change your look and are not afraid to play, this is a great guide.
An excellent makeup book.......2005-08-12
I didn't think I would love this book as much as I did Kevyn Aucoin's works, but I was sooooo impressed by it I'm recommending it to everyone I know who's interested in makeup. Linda Mason is truly an artist, who uses face as her canvas. The book is very educational, as well as inspirational. Some might find her techniques to be dated, but she has written her techniques to show what kind of different things you can do with makeup, and don't necessarily have to follow rules. Her technique for creating the smoky eye look is brilliant and very clear. I also found her section on being a pro makeup artist very helpful....her list of what should be in a makeup kit is very accurate. All in all, I give this book five stars because of the wealth of info you can get from it.
