5 out of 5 stars I would HIGHLY recommend !!! Perfect starter book........2007-07-18

This book has GREAT, VERY USEFUL material in it. It is not overly detailed, but very usable. It should help any Church understand the outline of what it needs to do with visitors and greeting those visitors.
Most every basic thing is there to get started. I especially liked the idea of developing "Teams" who are responsible for different things. SO, overall, it is a perfect starter book. I would love to see the writer do a Part 2 edition where he would give more details, especially details on how to read visitor's body language so that you know whether to be just cordial with them or very friendly (personable).

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2007-01-30

I am currently working through this book with our first impressions person at Parkway. For us it is helping us see the church in a new light. It really isn't brain surgeon ideas...but it allows our teams to expand their sight with the church.

Sometimes people get comfortable or can't see the church larger than it currently is...this book is a great tool to open the eyes of your teams...

Also Mark is great and doing this stuff at one of the greatest churches to date...

4 out of 5 stars "First Impressions" makes a lasting impression.......2007-01-12

First Impressions - Creating WOW Experiences in Your Church is a very easy to read book that has a significant number of useful ideas which can be used and modified for use in the church environment. Many of the suggestions are common sense but not easy to implement. Using the suggestions will put you closer to the customer - in your church. To look at practices in the church from the point of view of customer service will not please all church goers, but it makes sense when we stop to think that everything we do at church "speaks" - it sends a message. Are we sending the messages we want to send by having that pile of clutter in the corner? When we great newcomers, do we immediately sign them up to serve on a committee? - it could scare people away. This book provides many ideas and observations worth considering. I do recommend this book to you.

4 out of 5 stars A Welcome "Welcoming" Book.......2007-01-05

Very helpful and many ideas on how to make your church more friendly to guests. I recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth buying........2007-08-24

I bought this book thinking it would be as good as Practical Poser 6. It isn't. At best this is an intro to Poser possibilities. It doesn't completely walk you through anything. It hints and suggests you might be able to do some things with Poser 7 but then directs you to free websites to actually learn how to do them. If you can use Google, then you don't need this book.

5 out of 5 stars Computer libraries won't want to miss this........2007-03-12

If you have the basics down with Poser and want to move to the next level, PRACTICAL POSER 7 is for you: the computer user who already has some grounding and wants to move up. It's an updated edition of a best-seller and covers all of Poser 7's capabilities, from saving custom faces in the Face Room and using the Hair Room to add hair to clothing to texturing, creating custom morphs, UV mapping and more. With black and white screen shot examples throughout, you can't go wrong - and many a graphics teacher will want to use PRACTICAL POSER 7 as a classroom text. Computer libraries won't want to miss this.

2 out of 5 stars Practical Poser 7.......2007-02-06

Authors should use Adobe Tutorials as a model. Practical Poser 7 is a text for reading, not a tutorial for doing. It is not self contained with all materials needed to do the tutorials. It is also obviously keyed to stimulate purchases from Content Paradise. Needs considerable improvement. Not intuitive.

5 out of 5 stars Intermediate to Advanced Level Book.......2007-02-01

This book is listed as a beginning to intermediate level book. I think it's actually a little higher than that. It presumes that you have at least reviewed the Reference Manual, and hopefully worked through the Tutorial Manual. This is a tutorial style book. It takes you through a series of steps that will teach you more about the design of a person than you imagined.

After going through this book, I'm not going to say that the people making the next Harry Potter movie will jump at the chance to hire you, but I will say that you'll know a hell of a lot more about the computer creation of characters than you did when you started.

The key is to make characters look real. And here the authors point out little things like what do the fingers do in the hand that isn't reaching for something. And how do you make the torso bend with the body so that it looks real.

All in all, quite an exceptional book that I highly recommend. These people know what they are doing and know how to write about it.

The CD supplied with the book has a wealth of material including:

All the files used in the book and all of the images
Numerous Poser figures from a variety of sources
UV Mapper Software (Classic version)
Additional material from previous versions of this book

1 out of 5 stars The Light in Their Eyes: Creating Multicultural Learning Com.......2004-11-06

I read this book for a graduate level Multicultural Education course. We were given the option to choose between Sonia Nieto's book or another book. I blindly chose Nieto's, based on the reviews I read on Amazon.com. As it turns out, that was a HUGE mistake. It was one of the hardest books I have ever read! If I were writing my dissertation for my Ph.D. in education, perhaps I would have a better knowledge of the jargon Nieto uses. However, it was a struggle to get through how repetitive she tends to be, as well as deciphering much of her vocabulary. In the beginning I was having a lot of self-doubt about my ability to read. As it turns out, nine of the ten classmates who chose this book also suffered the same trouble I had.

On the other hand, Sonia Nieto delivers a great message that all educators should heed. She suggests that educators must continue to be fully dedicated toward accomplishing positive growth in the ongoing battle against educational inequity. Her bold implications are honest, which leaves the reader wanting to adopt her passion.

And yet, she should find a better editor to make the book more readable.

4 out of 5 stars a must read for educators!.......2001-03-28

sonia nieto does an extraordinary job of conveying not only the notion of multiculturalism, but also the understanding of what it takes to teach in a multicultural arena. nieto accurately describes the learning process as a reciprocal process between students and teachers, and students as teachers. nieto discusses the notion of "culture" as a verb, which i think is quite appropriate. the use of personal narratives, as well as her own experience as an educator in poor, urban areas, was very insightful and uplifting. one thing that struck me as prophetic, while seemingly obvious, was her statement "in order to become a multicultural teacher you must first be a multicultural person." well said. and well written.

5 out of 5 stars AN IMPORTANT BOOK!.......2000-05-07

In this book, Sonia Nieto clearly makes known to the reader a thorough understanding of what it takes to teach in multicultural contexts. It is very rare for me to be so attached to a book that is embedded heavily in research and educational theories, without putting it down for a few days. Nieto was able to hold my attention with easy, readable language and personal narratives of other teachers, in addition to her own experiences as a Puerto Rican educator. In my opinion, Sonia Nieto demonstrates her ability as a leading theorist in the field of multicultural education and critical pedagogy in this text that is presented with wonderful clarity and expertise. If I were ever in a position to teach a college course on multicultural education, I would definitely select this book as required reading, an excellent choice for a textbook in multicultural education.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2007-03-07

His artwork is good. It is helpful in learning techniques to eventually graduate in doing your own work by just looking a scene or picture. All of his books are great, predictable, but great.

3 out of 5 stars Good instruction.......2006-09-12

I watch Yarnell's PBS show whenever I possibly can, and always learn something from it. He's a fine artist. You would not necessarily know that from this book, however. The book offers solid instruction, but the quality of his illustrations (his paintings) is not very good. Let me clarify: I'm not necessarily criticizing the paintings themselves, but rather the unflattering way they are reproduced. Even so, they are generally adequate to illustrate the various points made in the text. Overall, it's a good book, if not a great one.

Book Description

When we walk into a room for the first time, we often have an immediate reaction to its atmosphere. The natural energies created by our environment influence how we feel. By enhancing positive elements, such as light, color, and scent, we can create a harmonious sanctuary that encourages health and well-being and all that is best in the human spirit. Environmental designer Suzy Chiazzari draws from a variety of cultures and philosophies to reveal the many ways in which we can improve the vital energy in our home. By using natural materials, full-spectrum lighting, energy-balancing sounds, as well as the healing properties of water, plants, sunlight, scent, color, and placement or feng shui, we can charge our home with an energy that "connects us to the earth, the air, and each other to sustain us in health."

5 out of 5 stars It made me paint my bedroom blue and buy bathroom candles!.......2007-08-26

For me the book was a great discovery with lots of things I did not know about. It inspired me to paint my bedroom deep-blue and my healing room brick orange, just like in the book. Oh, and the bathroom- you've gotta try make yours like that, with candles! I have also used the book at my speeches, and everyone loved looking through it. I would highly recommend it to people who are new to natural healing like myself. The book also inspired me to buy some stones. I would also love to meet the author one day and I would love to have a Japanese version for my customers. I love my home now- thank you!

3 out of 5 stars From Natural Nancy.......2007-05-02

This is a wonderful book as mentioned in the other reviews. Except, I felt they could have written more in depth rather than touching on the surface in many areas. Also I was hoping they would work more with color therapy and have more photo examples. The cover is misleading in that they never show it again or comment on it, also focusing on warm and bright colors almost exclusively, rather than the cooler tones on the cover.

5 out of 5 stars down to earth book.......2001-08-06

I first found this book at the library and just had to buy it. I was learning about feng shui and some of the books just took the concepts way too far. This one is both philosopohical and realistic and it has great tips that help you id some nice decorating approaches. I'm so glad I bought it.

5 out of 5 stars Create a Tranquil Home.......2000-04-08

This book is inspiring. The pictures are beautiful and serve as a motivation to create a haven of healing and peace within the home.

Suzi Chiazzari writes in a clear, personal style and lends credibility to how the home can influence our physical, mental and emotional well-being. The suggestions presented are practical and make sense without confusing "new age" rhetoric.

Topics presented in THE HEALING HOME include the use of color and texture, aroma, the importance of light, how decor can de-stress one's life, and bringing nature into the home.

Creating your own candles allows for a wide range of creative expression. Molding, dipping, rolling, carving, twisting, scenting, decorating-all these methods yield unique handmade candles, and all are nicely explored in this well-illustrated guide. A thorough introduction to the various techniques sets the stage for dozens of projects, from molded shapes concealing hidden treasures or stately pillars collaged with found objects to elegantly decoupaged tapers or whimsical candles mimicking ice cream sundaes. Many projects are devoted to decorating candle containers, so in addition to showing beginners how to delve into the field and providing more experienced crafters with new ideas, the book also offers great designs for unleashing your creativity on the candleholder, even if you never make a single candle from scratch. --Amy Handy

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great.......2001-05-18

This book covers the basics in candlemaking, what you'll need, wick types, wax types, pouring temps, which is very informative but it lacks in the candle varieties. It seems to focus more on candle decorating. I was looking for tips on making chunk, layered and ice candles to name a few. There also isn't any information on Gel wax or soy wax. There was some helpful information in here, but overall it wasn't what I was looking for in a candle book.

Book Description

Paul Light has captured the spirit of innovation. It is not about spectacular acts by individuals who labor against the odds, but about the hard work of building organizations in which innovation is expected and possible. It is about tilling the soil so that ideas can flourish. Anyone who wants to take their organization forward toward natural innovation should read this book.
--Walter F. Mondale

Any organization can innovate once. The challenge is to innovate twice, thrice, and more?to make innovation a part of daily good practice. This book shows how nonprofit and government organizations can transform the single, occasional act of innovating into an everyday occurrence by forging a culture of natural innovation.

Filled with real success stories and practical lessons learned, Sustaining Innovation offers examples of how organizations can take the first step toward innovativeness, advice on how to survive the inevitable mistakes along the way, and tools for keeping the edge once the journey is complete.

Light also provides a set of simple suggestions for fitting the lessons to the different management pressures facing the government and nonprofit sector. Unlike the private sector, where innovation needs only to be profitable to be worth doing, government and nonprofit innovation must be about doing something worthewhile. It must challenge the prevailingwisdom and advance the public good. Sustaining Innovation gives nonprofit and government managers a coherent, easily understood model for making this kind of innovation a natural reality.

5 out of 5 stars Great case studies; you go Minnesota!.......1999-08-16

Book opens with a Zoo, and I was hooked. I read the book voluntarily for a nonprofit management class, and I truly enjoyed it (which I cannot say for the big ol' Jossey-Bass Handbook and others I was forced to read). If you're familiar with the framework systems of Bolman and Deal, this is written from the Human Resources perspective and shows innovative ways of allowing creativity to enhance the mission of the nonprofit (or government agency) while using great examples based on 26 programs in Minneapolis and surrounding areas of Minnesota. If this interests you, I also suggest "Sacred Hoops" by Phil Jackson, and a book I just ordered called "Hope, Human, and Wild" about the Parana capitol city of Curitiba whose mayor is very into the planning part of Human Resource frame, very systems framed as well. So I give it two thumbs up. Go Light. Stay thin, baby.

There are enough baby memory books available today to fill a nursery, but finding one that acknowledges birth as a spiritual celebration is like trying to find a binky in the bottom of the diaper bag.

More than just a memory book, The New Jewish Baby Album shows you how--and why it's important--to create a Jewish home and a Jewish life. It includes a section to describe the naming ceremony, space to write encouragements, and pages for writing original blessings and creating original prayers, as well as meaningful quotes throughout.

Other highlights include a section for the parents to express personal prayers for the baby; pages for each of the major Jewish holidays; a family tree; room for photos; space to commemorate baby's first Shabbat at home; and much more.

This is the perfect baby book for any Jewish family, a spiritual keepsake that will be treasured for generations.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Start.......2007-05-13

This book is full of ideas and opportunities to make Judaism part of the day to day lives of you and your new baby. It has beautiful art, and powerful opportunities for spiritual reflection and growth. However, we are finding that while this book cites ceremonies for families of all observance levels, not all events apply to all branches of Judaism and that some of the 'suggestions' for observances can carry a 'must' tone. Finally, we have found that many of the 'traditional' baby book pages are missing. It would be helpful to see in later editions more space for photos and memorabilia, as well as spaces for more 'secular' events. While we will be keeping up with this book, as a way to mark and give honor to our baby's Jewish heritage, we have purchased a second baby book to mark the non-Jewish events in our baby's life.

4 out of 5 stars Great guide for great lighting.......2007-03-29

In a few words, this book is a must read for begginers and proffesional individuals that find themselves quite lost within the vast challenges of visual arts.It is a great guide for capturing great lighting into film, video or any other medium. Mr.Ross Lowell has set some high standards and has created numerous great lighting techniques, which shares with us, inside his well organised book.
My only comment will reffer to the small print in the letters of the book.
Great!!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite lighting books!.......2007-02-17

Let me say up front that I view the book from the prospective of a photographer, though it does cover film and video lighting also. This book is an easy read and offers a great balance technical information and practical applications of technique. The exercises presented at the end of the book work well to illustrate many of the lessons in previous chapters and show the reader first-hand the subtleties of lighting technique. "Matters of Light & Depth" is in my top ten favorite photography books along with "Creative Still Life Photography" By Bruce Pendleton, and "Learning to Light: Easy and Affordable Techniques for the Photographer" by Roger Hicks and Frances Schultz

5 out of 5 stars Great book on lighting.......2007-02-09

It is wonderful book on lighting with lot of practical advice. I very much liked the descripion of geting started with lighting - by standing where you plan to place the light and imagine what a hard light would do and a soft light would do from that position and place light based on that visualization. Also, the chapter on 'Method lighting' is very interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Survey & Starting Point.......2007-01-04

This is a great starter book to get if you have never done any lighting before - whether for video, cinema, or still photography. Lots of great tips and tricks that typically are missing from other lighting books. Lowell takes the concepts and precepts of lighting and presents them in abstract form so that you can adapt them to whatever lighting situation you may have. This book may not work for you if you are the kind of person who needs step by step how-to in order to get things done - in fact it is debatable that ANY book could do so effectively because every shoot is unique. But if you are good at thinking intuitively and abstractly then his presentation of the material is great because it teaches principals (with some examples) and not technique.
My one complaint is the typsetting of the book. The use of a modern typeface makes reading difficult (looks like a bodoni variant). The publishers should really re-publish the book to make it more legible.

5 out of 5 stars depth of the matter is...........2006-03-10

this is one of those quick fix reads to get when you feel a little burned out from your j.o.b. and need a pick me up. I opened this book and instantly started to remember stuff I learned years ago or even when I started doing this. With the combination of remembering and going through this book I started to get the creative bug again. It's hard to believe I already know most of the matterial in the book, until it is in front of me in text. This book is a huge "block" breaker. Get it.
