Updated with a new focus on digital imaging technologies, the new edition of this guide for photography professionals discusses how to improve lighting, digital capture, and client posturing techniques in the camera room so that less time is spent making computerized corrections in the digital darkroom. Posing and lighting strategies for minimizing perceived faults in the client's appearance, such as under-eye circles, bald spots, and tummy bulges, are provided, along with techniques for gracefully addressing and resolving potential appearance problems without demoralizing the client. Pointers are also given for effectively using Adobe Photoshop for the image problems that remain, including information on digitally removing braces and smoothing stray hairs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great pictures and tips in this book..........2007-09-02

I have purchased many photography books from Amazon in the past several months. Unfortunately, while the advice in most of them useful, the sample pictures are often very poorly done, lack variety or real inspiration. This book, however, is full of gorgeous portraitures that clearly demonstrate poses, lighting techniques, etc., while still being very nice to look at. The author gives shot details in the caption of each photo, and there is a very nice range of different styles and techniques that have given me a lot of ideas on what I'd like to shoot for myself. The text itself is clearly written and the inclusion of illustrated diagrams really helps visualize proper set ups for lighting.

The only caveat is that there are some glaring editing/layout problems in the introduction. The first page includes a couple paragraphs of the introduction, and the page it's supposed to continue onto starts the entire introduction over again. It took me a minute to figure out what was going on! But other than that, excellent book, wonderful and useful pictures, clearly written text, gorgeously laid out. I definitely recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of portrait photography.......2007-08-02

My good friend Bill Hurter has done it again. The third edition of The Portrait Photographer's Handbook is loaded with information and beautiful images from some of the best portrait artists in the world. Bill has acquired an incredible wealth of knowledge about photography over the years and gently guides the reader through what could easily be an overwhelming amount of information. He has chosen some absolutely gorgeous photographs to illustrate his points and, rather than lecturing his readers, it is as if he were sitting with you talking over each point. Bill took on a difficult task: he had to create a book that would cover essential components of posing, studio lighting, outdoor lighting, basics of exposure in the digital world, corrective techniques and some very useful Photoshop retouching techniques. The concern would be that each topic would not be handled with enough depth to make it a worthwhile read. The result is quite the contrary: beginners and advanced amateurs who are looking to venture into professional portraiture will have PLENTY to chew on here...and once they have done their homework and PRACTICED, will be ready to tackle books that take a more in-depth look at each of his topics. There were also some valuable tips for old dogs like me! One note of minor concern: there seems to have been a glitch in the introduction. The intro starts twice on two pages and there seems to be an unfinished thought in the same section. Don't let this bother you--go read, learn, shoot and learn some more.

5 out of 5 stars Great Portrait Book!.......2007-07-24

I just received my copy and after reading a few pages I can't seem to stop reading...it is that well written and very informative as well. This is an excellent portrait book I have so far. The book is easy to read, understand and comprehend! This is EXCELLENT! I would buy this book again and again and still feel good each time! This is a must have for portrait photographers!

5 out of 5 stars Want instant improvement on your photos - read this book.......2007-07-05

I struggled with getting the pose and light right for a long time. Most of my shots were, well, like I'd do at home with the family. After employeeing some of these basic elements of posing and lighting, my images look like they were inteded to be - professional. The reading is easy, but for a beginning professional photographer, the tips were ground breaking for me.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I need........2007-01-12

I bought this book a couple of months ago with the preconception that it would be just another step-by-step approach to portraiture,I'm so glad I was wrong, this book gives a fantastic insight to the world of portrait photography with masses of information both from the author and contributing photographers including none other than Monte Zucker.I find this book a valuable scource of reference and inspiration and I open it and look through from time to time when I'm short on ideas for an upcoming project and it does n't disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for!.......2007-01-16

I'm about 3/4 of the way through the first time, making a few notes as I go. This book is exactly what I was looking for. I'm a technically competent camera user. I've done dark room work in the past, and PhotoShop more currently. I'm an aging geek and amateur photographer and can handle the technology end just fine. I can recognize a good shot when I see one, but I've never done "People Photography" as other than casual shots or incidental to scenery.

This book gives great examples of the kinds of wedding photography currently popular. While it goes into some of the technical aspects of digital photograpy: work flow, RAW,color space, etc.; it covers "people techniques" such as appropriate camera height for portraiture, bust, and full body shots. It covers pose basics such as 7/8, and 3/4 head shots. Shoulders turned at an angle, head tilt differences for the bride verses the groom. Whether I make effective use of this book remains to be seen, but the information is just what I wanted.

If you're a serious portrait or wedding photographer who has read extensively in the field you'll readily recognize the name of Bill Hurter, whose skills have produced many winning titles on the subject of professional photography. Here he goes beyond the scenes with some of the world's top wedding photographers to learn - and impart - their secrets to any handy with a camera. From understanding current wedding photography trends to tips for lighting, posing, and digital manipulation of images, black and white and color examples compliment discussions of everything from developing photographer 'people skills' to technical manipulation.

Book Description

Pairing unique creative vision and exceptional technical artistry, Oscar Lozoya's breathtaking images embody the pinnacle of black-and-white portrait photography. Capturing diverse subjects-from professional artists and musicians to street people in his neighborhood-the images in this collection demonstrate how a skillful photographer can help viewers to look at subjects in new ways. This book analyzes more than 60 of his award-winning, critically acclaimed portraits, revealing the artistic intent behind each and the techniques with which he was able to execute his vision. Included are diagrams for almost every image and in-depth discussions of light selection, light placement, metering, and light ratios.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2007-06-29

I find Lozoya's work to be one of a kind. These are bold photographs that may stop you dead in your tracks. Each piece invites the viewer in, awakening the imagination to take over and tell stories inside the the stunning, suggestive worlds - elusive, rich in mystery, pathos and myth -at times nightmarish, Lozoya creates a dreamy cultural landscape. He has a knack for irony and humor as well as emotionally impactful imagery. I especially enjoy the Muerte series.

I highly recommend this book. I go back to it often for inspiration as an actor, writer and photographer. Lozoya captures the inner life of his subjects with compassion. The lighting and composition is alive and resonant. There is much to gain from an immersion in these photographs. The book will make a unique gift for anyone who'll appreciate absorbing story-telling through images.

2 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......2007-04-11

The best photograph in the book was used for the cover. Many of the photos, as portraits, seem rather contrived. The 'techniques' are kind of old school, and frankly the author uses the same set-up again and again. I was disappointed in it as both a book of portraits and a book discussing technique.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Imagery.......2003-06-26

The images in this book are breathtaking and beautiful. The variety of subjects from classic portraiture to publicity and folklore is impressive. I very much enjoy learning about different cultures and found this book to whet my appetite for the Mexican/American traditions. The text next to each image helped to explain individual photographs as well as why Oscar Lozoya started creating series of works. The homeless series made me look and see that he views the homeless as individuals with their own personalities that show through in the portraits he presents in this book.

Having seen original prints at an exhibit I must say that a good deal of tonalities were lost in the reproduction in the book. (As is to be expected when a photograph is copied for mass reproduction.) Mr. Lozoya's mastery of studio lighting in stunning in it's technical precision. As a photographer the lighting diagrams helped considerably to visualize the arrangement and placement of the strobe lights. There is also a good deal of information on how he contacts models and how the concept of each image took shape. The photographs in this book are sometimes classic portraits and there are also images that are strikingly different from the normal and challenge you to think. All of the photos are hard to forget.

This book helped to inspire me creatively and challenge the way I see photography as an art form. I would highly recommend it for anyone studying photography or wanting a creative jolt.

1 out of 5 stars Vulgar........2003-01-08

Mr. Lozoya's portraits can only be described as vulgar. The lighting is harsh and contrasty giving his portraits an "apparent" dramatic quality. His ability to "capture" the character of his subjects has less to do with Mr. Lozoya's ability to capture personality or "character" and more to do with taking advantage of his subjects -- the battered faces of the homeless, blind, handicapped, legless, toothless people. Otherwise Mr. Lozoya resorts to cheap theatrics of make-up, masks, horns, ridiculous dramatic poses, props and even fake blood.

For the publisher to publish Mr. Lozoya under it's "Masters Series" is deceiving and insults the true masters.

If you want to master black and white portrait photography study the portraits by Yousef Karsh.

5 out of 5 stars Good examples and inspiration.......2003-08-20

I am an amateur with experience in film and digital. I got interested in digital because powerful tools are more affordable than their film counterparts. For example, I don't need tons of filters, hugely expensive light kits or my own colour lab; a good camera, a simple lighting kit, Photoshop and a good photo printer go a long way for a fraction of the price. If you're that kind of person, you'll love this book.

My interest is primarily landscape and architecture but if you're the one in the familly with a camera you have to know something about portraiture too. I bought this book primarily because I had enjoyed the landscape title from the author, in this collection.

I recommend this book because (1) it's different from most "digital photography" book and (2) it follows a very practical format.

The digital photographer's handbook to portraits covers material that you will find in other Photoshop 101 books: adjustment layers, stamp/corrector, color correction, etc. but it has a unique twist: it works through projects that are clearly aimed at the amateur photographer. Specifically the author does not assume you own a studio or very expensive gear but rather that you use a digicam and you have limited gear. The book shows how to make the best out of your material.

For example the book shows how to simulate a background kit (that one was very useful recently), how to simulate filters, how to simulate long lens for depth of field, etc. Great inspiration.

A word of warning though: as another reviewer noted, it does not replace a good introduction to your image editing package of choice. In fact the book is very light on application specific information. Whether you own Photoshop Elements, PaintShopPro or PhotoImpact, you will want to get a tutorial first and use this book as inspiration afterwards.

1 out of 5 stars definitly not step-by-step!.......2003-03-28

I bought this book because although I'm very proficient with film, I'm new to digital and wanted to learn some of the basics of photoshop as it relates to portraiture. I was extremely disappointed. I tried one of the projects that had 5 steps and it ended up taking me two hours to complete. In the end, I had to guess because several key steps were not even mentioned. Computers are my thing. Photography is my thing. This book does not address both in a way that integrates the two well.

4 out of 5 stars simple to use and great tips using photoshop.......2003-02-07

Good visual instruction, and uses project-based approach to teach photo retouching (via photoshop). Fully colored pages and printed on quality paper.

I really love the tips they mentioned about how to use photoshop to correct/improve portraits. eg. select/deselect hair, removing blemishes, how to use Levels to correct color, and how to make the background blur.

Provides simple steps and minimal words.

The first chapter is too basic - talks about scanners, cameras and accessories.

4 out of 5 stars Photographer's Guide to Shooting Model and Actor Portfoli9s.......1999-12-05

"There is more to successfully shooting and producing a model's portfolio than taking good photographs of people. It requires a combination of artistic talent, technical knowledge business and communication skills, basic psychology, and imagination." This first paragraph of the introduction to the Photographer's Guide to Shooting Model and Actor Portfolio tells photographers right up front that the business of portfolio work is not to be taken lightly. It's hard work. If you decide this is the work in which you want to be proficient, however, this soft cover book can be a definite asset to your library. The book covers subjects such as how attract clients and how to best serve and build a professional relationship with your client and their agency. Chapter two gives pointers on preparing the contract, " . . . the most significant piece of paperwork you can generate." A list is presented stating all the things that need to be discussed and put in the contract to protect yourself and your client. Along with this information pricing practices are suggested. Preparation for the shoot, the shoot and how to handle the film after the shoot are covered in detail. The use of props, posing and lighting and how to use each to best show case your clients are discussed in detail and generously illustrated. Lighting set-ups are diagramed with photographs showing the effect of each set-up. The last chapter is about the design, printing, packaging and delivery of the portfolio. Written in clear and concise terms, words are not wasted. Subjects, however, are covered thoroughly. If you had no other material but this book to refer to for your first portfolio shoot, I think you could successfully handle the job from start to finish.

2 out of 5 stars This is an average book at best.......1999-11-26

This book is extremely weak in its photography and style. Pictures and fashions are dated, and creativity of poses and lighting makes for bland entertainment, or instruction for that matter.

It starts to show some glimmer of hope when it mentions how to pose hands and shows pictures of does and don'ts for posing them. But it stops short and doesn't offer much more (a little yes, but not much) for other parts of the body either. It never lends advice to subtle but important aspects of arrangements of posture or eye placement.

The good news about this book, is Amazon will take it back!

    Book Description

A gorgeous collection from one of the world's legendary photographers- capturing human hands in all their vitality.

At the end of a session, photographer Eve Arnold always took a parting shot of the hands -and sometimes the feet- of her sitters, for luck and for her personal records. Handbook with Footnotes brings together two hundred of these superb pictures.

A photojournalist who traveled around the world, Eve Arnold also worked on the sets of more than 40 Hollywood movies. These photographs, therefore, which span her career, include such luminaries as Isabella Rossellini, Orson Welles, Marilyn Monroe, and Jimmy Stewart, captured in unguarded moments and with an unexpected focus away from their famous faces. And yet the celebrity portraits are just some of the highlights in a far-ranging and deeply moving portrait of humanity. Here are old hands, young hands, hands gripping guns and holding flowers, performing surgery and playing cards, painting, saluting, and blessing.

With this beautifully produced book, Eve Arnold establishes herself once again as a major photographer of our time.

    Book Description

What is it about hands? We think we communicate with words, but has anyone ever told that to an Italian? Where did the expression "tongue-tied" come from? No one ever tied a tongue. But tie their hands and about half the world's communicators would be silenced. The human (and sometimes non-human) hands are, with the possible exception of the eyes, the most expressive parts of the body, asking for more or less, telling us to come or to go, asking questions and answering them, scolding, rewarding, searching and finding, and, at their most intimate, loving and lustful. Hands reward us, calm us, feed us, and scratch our backs. They intimidate, bless, encourage, and stop us. They soothe, caress, and sometimes go where they shouldn't. We may take hands for granted. But Elliott Erwitt does not. Here is Erwitt at his most serious-and-yet-whimsical best, giving us the moments which, without hands, would not exist. 100 duotone images.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Touching and Humorous Look at Humanity.......2002-11-24

Elliott Erwitt has a wonderful outlook on life. In this book, he focuses on the human hand and shows a lot of love, humor and humanity in the process. The variety includes a man kissing a woman's hand in Poland, an argument between an elderly couple in St. Tropez, people praying in Moscow, beautiful sunbathers in Rio, children playing in New Rochelle and travelers in Budapest. Most of the subjects aren't famous which is a strength. The book shows everyday scenes that could have happened anywhere. The book also includes some famous people including: Jacques Cousteau, John Updike, Richard Nixon and Nikita Khrushchev. This book is a joy and a smile. Erwitt has great vision and compassion. Many people would have walked right past these scenes without even seeing the potential to communicate by capturing touching and humorous images.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Not a bad book!.......2001-08-02

The first chapters were more like a page out of a psychology text, i.e. not very useful to the photographer on the street. The chapters on posing and positioning men & women was really the only redeeming factor. Buy it used, use it often!
