Customer Reviews:
Outstanding book.......2007-06-05
It's really hard to say too many things about this book. Even older editions of Color Drawing are great, but this newest one goes above and beyond the call of duty. In an age when a lot of books get re-released as new editions with few substantive changes, Color Drawing breaks the mold by updating the techniques with current technology (i.e. Photoshop). It's great to see that the author and publisher realize that pure hand-drawing and rendering is quickly becoming a thing of the past and that the practitioners of today and tomorrow need to have excellent computer skills too. This book is full of very useful tips for combining Photoshop with hand drawings to create great effects. So even if you have an earlier edition, do yourself a favor and buy the new one anyway because you will learn a lot.
Color Drawing: Design Drawing Skills and Techniques for Architects, Landscape Architects, and Interior Designers, 2nd Edition.......2007-01-06
This is an excellent resouce for the study of rendering. After detailing the elements of color and design, it describes, step-by-step, how to achieve many finishes both interior and exterior. It is both instructive and informative.
Outstanding Resource.......2007-01-03
This is the standard for rendering in architecture and interior design as far as I am concerned. It will most definitely become a required textbook for my classes in visual presentation in the years to come. Doyle takes you step-by-step into the process of rendering with marker, color pencil, and pastels. But he doesn't just spoon feed you the recipe for each material rendering, he presents the basis for a process that allows you to render virtually any material not found in the book.
EXCELLENT rendering help.......2006-02-25
My rendering skills have improved HUGELY scince recieving this book. It helps with marker, colored pencils, pastels, how to treat light, etc. My renderings look amazing and it is a great reference for when I'm not sure how to treat a surface/object. I would absolutely recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
Must have book for all artist.......2007-08-05
I love the more detailed drawings seen in this book. Alot of pencil drawing technique books look dark and smudged. Phil Metzger has used a wonderful talent to help others. I generally try to be more photorealistic in the pictures I draw in pencil or pen and ink and this book was one of the most helpful I have found. Buy it Buy it Buy it if you really enjoy drawing and want others to see what you were looking at when you drew it.
Get this one!.......2007-05-17
If your new to pencil drawing, you will learn more in the first 20 pages of this book than you will from most other books cover to cover.
Great stuff.......2007-02-06
It describes how to interpret nature and useful techniques at drafting what you see. I got a lot out of this book. The artwork is fabulous. This book is a great starting point for an adventure in nature and landscape.
Love, Love, Love.......2006-04-21
This was to be my next purchase from amazon, however, a one night out with my husband he decides to go to or local bookstore and as impaient as I was I decided to get it then. Believe me, that was a mistake, I have gotten 2 books from amazon for what I paid at Books a Million for this one. However, I was just proud to have it. This book has really helped me discover new and amazing techniques. BUY IT, you wont be dissapointed.
GET THIS BOOK!.......2004-05-20
I highly recommend this book. I first read "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and this book is a great follow up to it for anyone who thinks they cannot draw! I could hardly draw legible stick figures and now carry a sketch book with me wherever I go. Mr. Metzger has a way of writing that seems to speak to you at whatever level you are at in drawing. His examples are excellant. Tips abound. GET THIS BOOK!
Book Description
Flowers are a perennial favorite subject because of their exciting variety and complexity of color, texture and detail. Using basic colored pencil techniques, artists can capture the rich textures and distinct personalities of elegant orchids, graceful roses, cheery pansies and dozens of other beautiful blooms.
Gary Greene, along with six other respected colored pencil artists, show how to make the most of colored pencil's distinctive translucent properties. In 64 glowing, step-by-step demonstrations they show how to layer, burnish and underpaint colors to create floral portraits that are truly radiant. Features advice on choosing tools and materials plus the Plethora of Flora--a colorful gallery of finished blooms.
Customer Reviews:
Great Flower Lessons.......2007-02-06
I felt the book provided good lessons and beautiful graphic design . The artist does certainly draw radiant flowers. My main objection is the variety of colored pencils and watercolor pencils needed to have on hand from various different companies.
Book of copying.......2006-11-05
The book is full of beautiful and inspirational flower drawings, I admit. I hoped to get some hints about drawing flowers generally, but the author teaches the reader to copy his(her?) drawings step-by-step, including to use the same pencils/colours. Maybe, if I was 10 years old, it would be helpful, but as an adult, I don't want to copy someone's creation. Yet, the book is not disappointment to me - it introduces a new technique of coloured pencils I never met before.
Beautiful Pictures - not enough how to.......2004-11-18
This book contains wonderful examples of colored pencil art. The pictures in this book are exquiste. As a person who is just starting exploring medium and just starting drawing, I found it lacking in the how to aspect. Each picture has a list of the colors used in it. But, it doesn't go into detailed instruction or detailed technique which is what I would have liked at this beginning stage. When I get more proficient with my technique I will go back to this book. The books displays wonderful examples of what can be done with colored pencils. The book is worth having for the beautiful pictures. If nothing else it makes a great coffee table book.
Excellent Book!!.......2001-08-11
This is a great book, it has many drawings not just by the author but by other artists. The pictures are clear and very large so you can see all the details. Every page has a drawing and tells what colors were used and how they were applyed. I think this book Is excellent but is aimed more for the serious artist.
The Right Book at The Right Time !.......1999-01-03
As a beginner with the colored pencil medium I have been working with flowers as my main subjects. With my love of the flowers, plants, and trees,I was naturally pulled towards wanting to put my hand to the drawing of flowers. A friend of mine who knew of my interest, gave me Gary Greene's wonderful book. Not only was I thrilled by seeing the works of truly accomplished colored pencil artists, but I was inspired by the instruction and care that went into the writing and illustration of this book.
It has not only become a teaching guide for me but,it has also become an inspiration to make me work harder to learn more about this wonderful, dynamic art medium. (And, I use the word work lightly, what a joy!)
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding book for me!.......2006-06-09
The book is full of sketched pictures. The particular style of the artist was exactly the style I appreciate. So, all of his drawings in the book are ones I would like to pattern myself after. He gives shading examples for trees, grass, bark of trees, etc. AWESOME BOOK and a GREAT HELP to me!!
One way.......2005-02-22
This is one of those volumes beloved of amateurs everywhere who are no so much interested in exploring art as they are in producing drawings. If you studiously follow the instructions in this book, you will be able to produce drawings that look EXACTLY like the illustration in the book. And if you're interested in doing that, it's a fine book.
But if you're intersted in seeing as an artist sees, and drawing the world as you see it, and not as Petrie sees it, you might want to look elsewhere.
I recommend it to everyone.......2004-09-26
I wouldn't term this book as 'good for beginners only'.
To begin with, the book features Mr. Ferdinand Pertries style of drawing landscapes and is replete with completed drawings. And, he, the author, isn't a beginner definitely, as you will know.
Yes, the landscapes are not `photo-realistic', because they are not meant to be. They aren't amateurish either. One should have a look at the cover of the book itself to know what I'm trying to say.
Personally, I found that each of those drawings were 'wish you were here' type of drawings. They have a dreamy kind of look; and what's more better than that, they're very easy to create. You will be surprised at how beautiful landscapes can be rendered with simple pencil strokes within an hour or two; from photos or from life.
After a brief introduction to materials and strokes, the book jumps right into examples wherein Mr. Petrie demonstrates how one can render various elements like trees, mountains etc., all accompanied with an actual *finished* drawing. The last part of the book features the Artist's Portfolio of drawings.
Most importantly, the book does not drag you into overt technical language (which to my preferences seems boring). It will get your hands down and dirty in no time.
Inspiring; if it only were for the landscapes in this book, even then I would go ahead I buy it!
Cheers,
FF
p.s. having said this, a word of caution to the `I want a photo-realistic drawing' types. This book is NOT for you.
Excellent for Beginners.......1999-12-29
This book is without a doubt the best single book I have ever seen on basic pencil techniques, esp. drawing scenic landscapes. The methods he teaches are simple and easily learned, yet yield excellent results.
Excellent book. I am a beginner........1999-07-14
I am a retired electronic engineer, and have taken up art as a hobby. According to what I have read, drawing should be studied before going into painting. Mr. Petrie's book has been an excellent launching pad for learning to draw. In the past 3 months I have purchased 13 books on learning art, but none has proved as useful to me as this one. I copy his drawings and am surprised on how well they turn out. I can heartily recommend this book.
Book Description
Colored pencils offer aspiring artists a unique combination of creative versatility and precise control. This introductory course encompasses everything the budding and intermediate-level artist needs to get started right away: basic materials and tools; wet and dry techniques; the successful use of color, texture, and composition; the effect of perspective and depth on a drawing; maximizing a limited palette; and enhancing and burnishing colors. Sixteen skill-building projects and practical exercises are demonstrated through 150 color photographs, with detailed, expert instruction covering the four most commonly explored artists’ subjects: still life, landscape, people, and animals.
Customer Reviews:
The good with the bad.......2007-09-19
This is not really a book about "colored pencils," by which is usually meant Prismacolor wax pencils, or similar; it's a book about watercolor pencils, which are related, but not identical. Although some of the techniques are the same, the goals are different and the results, done well, aren't alike.
There is some good advice on technique here, but the example projects are uneven. Some of them are OK, some of them are quite nice, while others -- particularly the portraits -- well, not so much.
Finally, note that the topic of this book is not drawing per se, but painting or rendering: the author recommends in virtually every project that the reader start by tracing a source photograph.
Quite Helpful Book on Drawing with Colored Pencils.......2007-05-17
I picked up some good tips from reading this book. Now I'll tuck an emory board in with my pencils when I'm out drawing wild flowers, so I can sharpen the points of my pencils without having a pencil sharpener eat them up.
Even though I've read 3 or 4 books on using colored pencils, this helped me understand how to add burnishing with a white pencil and about shading and mixing colors. I have a better concept of using highlights, but still don't quite understand using perspective very well.
The main part of the book features sixteen demonstrations that show a finished drawing and the reference photo of the subject. Using eight steps, it shows the work in progress and gives instructions for achieving the finished drawing.
The topics covered in these demonstrations include four still lifes, four landscapes, four portraits and four animal drawings. This allows it to show a variety of techniques like monotone drawing, wax resist, and using layering to get the right strength of color. It gives tips for special effects for drawing fabric, fur, sand, etc. Using the pencils with water was explained and how to mix it with dry pencils.
The book ends with a gallery of eight inspiring drawings by top colored pencil artists.
I was quite pleased with this book.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource.......2006-08-16
This is a fine book to have in your resource and refrence section. I feel that drawing is a very important part of the artistic experience. It allows your ideas to take form without words. Although I would suggest the "New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain," as a primer for anyone learning to draw anything, if you focus on landscapes this book will help.

A "Best of Colored Pencil" with How - To's.......2001-11-18
The best way to describe all the books in this series is a "Best of Colored Pencil" but combined with a short how-to essay showing how each featured artist approached the painting. The approach of the book was simple. A group of artists were each given one of three landscape photos and then asked to create a colored pencil painting using the photo as a reference.
The variety of interpretations was inspiring. One entry particularly delighted me. One lady must have seen her landscape photo as a reminder of China or Japan. The resulting landscape she created from the photo took on a beautiful Oriental quality. Each artist listed the materials they used, the colors used and most had a few step-by-step thumbnail sized photos of the pictures in progress as well as the final painting in larger format. I most treasure it simply because the creative responses to something as simple as the same 3 photos lead to so many different results. Books like this are invaluable for helping to inspire creative ideas - especially if you're suffering from "blank page" syndrome. My one and only wish is that it had been longer...it's that good. All in all, a very worthwhile book to own.
