Outstanding book.......2007-06-05
It's really hard to say too many things about this book. Even older editions of Color Drawing are great, but this newest one goes above and beyond the call of duty. In an age when a lot of books get re-released as new editions with few substantive changes, Color Drawing breaks the mold by updating the techniques with current technology (i.e. Photoshop). It's great to see that the author and publisher realize that pure hand-drawing and rendering is quickly becoming a thing of the past and that the practitioners of today and tomorrow need to have excellent computer skills too. This book is full of very useful tips for combining Photoshop with hand drawings to create great effects. So even if you have an earlier edition, do yourself a favor and buy the new one anyway because you will learn a lot.

This is an excellent resouce for the study of rendering. After detailing the elements of color and design, it describes, step-by-step, how to achieve many finishes both interior and exterior. It is both instructive and informative.
Outstanding Resource.......2007-01-03
This is the standard for rendering in architecture and interior design as far as I am concerned. It will most definitely become a required textbook for my classes in visual presentation in the years to come. Doyle takes you step-by-step into the process of rendering with marker, color pencil, and pastels. But he doesn't just spoon feed you the recipe for each material rendering, he presents the basis for a process that allows you to render virtually any material not found in the book.

My rendering skills have improved HUGELY scince recieving this book. It helps with marker, colored pencils, pastels, how to treat light, etc. My renderings look amazing and it is a great reference for when I'm not sure how to treat a surface/object. I would absolutely recommend this book.

The text, as the previous reviewer writes, is excellent. I love the preliminary chapters for content and ability to communicate various concepts of fashion thinking. However, in the tutorials there are enough missing or unclear steps to frustrate someone attempting to learn new software. It would be helpful if the reader/user has previous familiarity with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop in order to work past these issues. Needless to say, the text components that integrate Illustrator and Photoshop tools are quite helpful and promote realistic ways to use the software applications together. I am pleased with the text, but do look forward to a second edition.

Draw with black/white first! Yes!.......2007-08-13
Compared to most modern drawing books, which are pell-mell compilations using different (often color) media, which distract from basic drawing principles
of line and tone, Hammond's book, although lowbrow and hobbyist, is a breath of fresh air. Here is someone who (at first anyway) is not afraid to use
the humble pencil and make work in black and white. The strength of any drawing comes from its tonal variety, depth and realism, and in the accuracy of its contours and proportion. With Hammond's simple "grid and blend" technique, one can turn forgotten photos into powerful resources to make head-turning, realist art.
Having said that, the reader should keep in mind that the old masters never learned to draw this way. If they had photos, maybe they would have. But the old masters had to draw from life, often using red and black chalk, and shade using a hatching technique. Because the model could not sit still forever, this practice encourages an artist to get down the essentials quickly, and to not obsess over detail. They often worked larger and in more generalized terms than the constricted, almost
tedious process outlined by Hammond. And their artwork is much more
spirited and lifelike than her obsessive stumping technique.
But who cares? Hammond's technique works. You get some realistic drawings, which are more interesting than most drawings out of people's imagination. Not everyone can draw like Rubens. If you want to learn to draw
like Rubens, Watteau or Boucher, then forget this book. But if you don't
have willing models, and you like realism, then go for it. You will at least learn about the variety of tone (from darkest black to white) in life, and that is half of what drawing is about, and you'll create something from nothing.
Get Over It.......2007-07-21
I am no artist OK! I am a 52 year math and physics teacher. What does that tell you? Those who bash this book as not artistically "right" are most likely the same ones who turn people off to art by telling them to get in touch with their feelings. This is like telling an obese and out of shape guy to get in touch with his feelings through yoga. Nonsense! The guy needs to learn to walk and move and to have fun exercising. Drawing is no different.
Beginners get discouraged because art teachers tell them to draw squiggly lines and shapes and patterns. While these are OK techniques and can work for motivated artists, most beginners just want to draw somewhat realistic subjects. These techniques and skills can be incorporated into the process of drawing real things. This is how Lee does it. As a beginner, this book will get you where you want to be (as will other Lee Hammond books) and you will have fun getting there.
Is it for advanced artists? Probably, not. But these are the folks bashing the book. They bash gridding. Well, if one doesn't need to use a grid or if one does not want to use gridding, then don't use gridding! Give people some credit! We can all figure out if we want to draw a grid or go freehand. "Pushing graphite is an immature method." Well, maybe so in the eyes of expert artists. But artists have been using blending techniques for thousands of years and what is graphite pushing - blending! It is an easy way for beginners to learn to shade and to create shape and texture before learning more complex methods. Critics say Lee's work is not very good! Well I disagree! I took the book to my school and I found not one student or teacher (including the art teachers) who didn't like the drawings. Lee's books are the Fanfare For the Common Man. They appeal to the masses of beginning and intermediate art students who just want to have fun and learn to draw.
Is the book perfect? What does that mean? Nothing is perfect for all people. But Lee's book is a good one. It is very well written in easy to follow language, to the point, and provides great examples and exercises. Lee makes it a point to avoid the stuffy, abstract, gobble-d-goop that many artists seem to believe bolster their otherwise fine techniques. Lee is a very talented artist who knows how to teach and knows how to reach the rest of us aspiring wannabes.
As I said earlier, I am more the Einstein/Edison type (although I don't include myself as worthy of being in their ranks) and as I try to branch out and learn to appreciate the fine arts, I find Lee's books inspiring and exactly what this guy needs.
Get them! You won't regret it and the prices are reasonable. If you can't learn something from Lee's books, then you aren't trying very hard.

Great Confidence Booster.......2007-06-16
This book has helped me to do portraits of my children and some for my co-worker's families. When I first bought this book, I could already draw and have a friend look at it and know who or what my subject was supposed to be, but it wasn't very good in my own eyes. This book has given me the confidence I needed to actually put some of my portraits in frames on my walls. My goal! I love the idea of having pencil portraits of my family as well as regular old pictures, and I was able to do it without commissioning an expensive version. I use partial graphs to help me in the areas I have trouble with and freehand the rest. I also use her example drawings to give me ideas on how features might look if my picture is too tiny to really see it. I tried using a mechanical pencil, but I found that I could avoid a lot of work if I just used regular sharpened graphite pencils and sticks. This was perfect for my friend's 12 year-old son as well. He was able to produce beautiful portraits with the help of Hammond's technique. I think it's better to not need the graphs, but this book is a real confidence booster. If you can draw something and have people ogle over it, it makes you want to do more and better. It gives you a sense of pride in your accomplishments. I recommend this book for beginners and people like me who need a bit of extra help.

I think this book was very informative, it changed my perspective on drawing life like portraits. After going through it and applying the techniques I could instantly see a difference just by using the methods of shading. It was and still is a good alternative tool to use if you are unable to actually receive proper classes. I use it as a reference while I'm drawing. I think some ability to draw is required to use and understand it.

Not a good book to *LEARN* from!.......2006-12-12
It helped a bit, only in a way to be able to look at the photographs as reference WITHOUT ANY WAY OF KNOWING HOW TO DRAW THEM BEFORE I PROCEEDED!
this book is pretty unorganized & gives half-way step-by-step looking illustrations, and the ONLY ONES are for the landscaping section in the book (which there is only about 4 pages total of them)! so, in this "book", you are pretty much to geuss for yourself to know what TO do & what you CAN do with the book!
Also, the section that claims to focus on a portrait only gives one-paged illustrations "drawing a man", "drawing the eye", & "drawing a teenager", THAT'S IT!!!
I now no longer a biginner, but this book barely helped me remove that title...
So, what I'm trying to say is,
if you are a biginner, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK, IT WILL NOT HELP YOU IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A GOOD BOOK TO LEARN FROM!
but... if you are not, YOU SHOULD ONLY BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A FEW REFERENCE DRAWINGS IN LANDSCAPE (which would probley be a waste of money, also).
so if you want to buy $13 bucks worth of 8 or 9 pages in landscape reference drawings without knowing how to draw them first, then go ahead.

I really tried to like this book but I just could not. Especially for someone who is new to drawing like myself it was a waste of money . This book is more suitable for an experienced artist.
The Best Drawing Book I've Seen.......2006-07-27
This is the book that really helped me! The other one I like is the old standard "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain." But for practical, usable exercises that will give you immediate results, this is definitely the book to have! Since I didn't have any of Hammond's previous books, there was no problem for me with repitition of material. I love that she is very specific in naming materials and explaining why she uses certain brands of materials vs. others. If you get only one drawing book, this should be it!

I love the more detailed drawings seen in this book. Alot of pencil drawing technique books look dark and smudged. Phil Metzger has used a wonderful talent to help others. I generally try to be more photorealistic in the pictures I draw in pencil or pen and ink and this book was one of the most helpful I have found. Buy it Buy it Buy it if you really enjoy drawing and want others to see what you were looking at when you drew it.

I highly recommend this book. I first read "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and this book is a great follow up to it for anyone who thinks they cannot draw! I could hardly draw legible stick figures and now carry a sketch book with me wherever I go. Mr. Metzger has a way of writing that seems to speak to you at whatever level you are at in drawing. His examples are excellant. Tips abound. GET THIS BOOK!

This book is equally useful for beginning colored pencil artists through more advanced portrait artists. It is a must read for beginners, as I am. Author Anita Kullberg begins with basic colored pencil techniques, composition and the all-important skills of using light, dark and mid tone values. Then, she leads the reader through the step-by-step techniques of painting skin tones, facial characteristics and realistic hair. By the time I painted my second portrait using Kullberg's techniques described in this book, my painting was believable and recognizable. Far more important to the amateur, I really liked my work! The book is indexed for an easy search for content and Kullberg's "Hints" are real gems. This is a great reference book in addition to the tutorials.

This book was spectacular. The author and artist is absolutely amazing. When I found the book I had no idea how to blend and make skin tone with colored pencil being a black and white pencil artist, but I was able to read her instructions and use them to make my first colored pencil portrait and it looked fantastic. If you are an aspiring portrait artist and you want to learn colored pencils, this is a book you can't do without!

This book got me started on colored pencil, it was my very first introduction to the medium. Ann Kullberg through her enthusiasm is incredibly motivating- with carefully thought out step by step techniques and beautiful paintings to show you exactly how she achieved each effect. She goes through every process of creating a portrait in colored pencil starting from a blank page- learning the tools; to composition; right up to the business of selling your work. Ann is also very humble and took the time to answer all of my questions personally when I wrote her a letter. It was because of this and the great joy I got from working through her lessons I went to one of her workshops. She is a patient teacher who will not hesitate to help another-sharing all of her secrets. Ann Kulberg is of great strong moral character and a master of her trade. I would recommend any product she has created.

I just attended her portrait workshop for 3 days & can tell you that this gal is the real deal! She's genuinely gifted & has such a wonderful & bubbly personality! I had attended a workshop 2 yrs. ago from a different cp artist & vowed not to go to any more until I decided to go to Ann's (whose workshop I wished I could've took in 2005 instead of Arlene's). This book will help you so much!! I am used to doing colored pencil with the scumbling method which takes forever!! Ann has developed the most amazingly easy technique that is so much faster & looks just as good if not better!! I think the only bad reviews must be by her ex! Ha! I want to attend the 2nd workshop someday that goes with her 2nd book. I have her CDs that go with her books & CDs of her online magazine for colored pencil. All are so helpful!! Her method & books will help even the worst of artists I believe! Thank you Ann for all of your help!!

Helen is a great teacher. I have taken art classes and learned 1/10th of what I learned by reading her book. I am colorblind and people argue with me about it because of my ability to use the right colors. I only wish she was still here so she could produce even more information etc.

Because I knew that Helen Van Wyk was a "TV painter" I was skeptical, but I discovered that Helen was light years past any of the painters I ever saw on TV. Her talent was outstanding and her teaching is clear, sensible, and utterly practical for painters at any level from absolute beginner on up. I have a degree in fine art; I make a living painting custom murals, and I'm still learning all kinds of useful things from Helen. My work has definitely improved as a result of applying just a fraction--so far--of the information here. It's a shame this wasn't among our textbooks in college; it could've saved me so much time and struggle. Oh, and money. This book will more than pay for itself in savings on paint and supplies.
Why only four stars out of five? Because this book isn't complete on its own. I'm online today to buy "Color Mixing the Van Wyk Way", which I recently borrowed from a friend and now must own. That one goes into more depth with the entire process of building a painting--some stuff I learned in art school, and a lot that unfortunately I did not, because modern painting instruction is sorely lacking in real foundations. Van Wyk can help you fill the gaps if you've been painting a long time, or start you out right if you're new at this.

How NOT to draw..........2006-08-10
This book starts out with some good basic principles of drawing - basic shapes in 3 dimensions; lighting and understanding value correlations on objects.
Ms. Hammond's techniques and exercises are horrible. If you would like to develop bad drawing habits - this IS the book for you.
Hammond's technique (using a 2B mechanical pencil) is to build up value (4 levels), then smudge and smear your way to success. Any artist - in regards to beginning drawing/ technique - knows that 'smudge/smear' is a drawing anathema. This technique deprives the striving student the opportunities to develop skills in building value; understanding contour of objects as revealed by the play of light and shadow; cross hatching to develop drawings with greater depth, etc. .
Additionally, Ms. Hammond has absolutely no understanding of how to establish and use vanishing point/s in a drawing - a shortcoming she illustrates clearly.
This technique renders drawings that are flat, 'dirty looking' (due to the smudge technique), and lacking in depth, contrast, and appeal.
Basic techniques for drawing lifelike images.......2006-08-03
This was my first Lee Hammond book and not likely to be the last. I have found that this book is very easy to follow, and a must have for any aspiring artist who loves to draw! It has helped me greatly in understanding how to use drawing tools and whenever I draw from it, I have loved ones peering over my shoulder to see what I'm drawing and the ohhhs' and awwws really put a smile on my face. Not to mention the finished product of my drawing. I didn't even know that I had that much talent but this book helps to bring it out of me and onto paper!

Even if you own Lee Hammond's other drawing books, there is still a wealth of information to be gained from this one! The author provides clear instructions on a variety of topics -- from drawing stunning glass objects to producing the most technical architecture renderings -- it's all here, in the unique Hammond style.
If I had to choose one drawing book to keep, out of my entire collection, it'd likely be this one. I'm thoroughly enjoying the reading of it and looking forward to practicing the many tutorials it offers.
I give it a resounding A+.

Want to know how - comic book guide.......2007-08-27
This is good for beginner and intermediate level artist. It will show you in a very simple way all the how-to's of pencilling. Good price also. It's part of three book set, Penciling, IOnking And Coloring comics - from DC comics

I was hoping that this book would be a more detailed guide to penciling. Most of the illustrations were inked, though. It also has a LOT of text, which makes it not so easy to sit and read while trying to actually draw. I would recommend the "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way" over this book.

I just received this book and immediately went to chapter fourteen. After reading chapter fourteen first I have to say that it was worth the price of the book.
VERY Little Info on Penciling.......2005-09-30
I can't recommend this book, which falls firmly in the category of works aimed at milking the purses of comics-artist wannabes. It also teeters right on the edge of the stuff that seems driven by an urge to discourage potential competition from entering the field. Plus it doesn't have any valuable info on penciling!!! Mitch Byrd's "Notes to Draw From" is a better resource.
Klaus Janson has worked on some major DC titles and apparently also teaches at the School of Visual Arts. Here he seems to be trying to pad out grudgingly little info on penciling with a sort of "why comics require super skills to draw" pedagogy that consumes more than 110 pages of an essentially 142-page book!
There's some good info in here I suppose, but the technical stuff always needs to be taken with a large block of salt. No one ever became a great artist by studying art. People become great artists by doing what they enjoy! The way to become an artist is by creating art. As you encounter challenges you look for solutions to problems and develop. In that sense this book might be useful. B-S- statements like "Drawing... requires study" etc etc do more harm than good IMHO.
The most important thing for would-be comics artists to remember is that the most successful guys in the field are Matt Groening and Scott Adams. They didn't get to the top through their knowledge of anatomy! Frank Cho is a brilliant draughtsman, but "Liberty Meadows" will never have the kind of circ "Doonesbury" had - back when Garry Trudeau was drawing little better than stick figures!
There are lots of books written from a viewpoint of encouraging young artists to learn while supporting them through their inevitable frustrations. Look for those books before wasting your time with this.

This is a useful guide no doubt, as with many other how-to books, however it's not at all the best I've seen.
I'd still recommend getting this book if you are an aspiring artist, because it's always important to stock a library of information within your field(s).
