Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An excellent place to start!.......2007-09-04

In design and illustration it can often be all to easy to overlook the important basics such as colour. This excellent book from Rockport takes you through the basics, to some more complex ideas and has plenty of high quality product examples. For people like me who didn't go to art college this sort of reference is a must.

5 out of 5 stars Oh my Colors!.......2007-06-07

Ver good book on color design. Has many useful examples as well as intersting ways to use them. Also good for beginners to introduce them to color without overwheling them. Would recommend to novice-intermediate designers, but also a good reference for some pros.

5 out of 5 stars Great book that inspires me to get to work!.......2007-02-27

I love colors... probably too much... but I always seem to pick the same color palette when I'm designing things, and can't seem to stray to far from them, so I needed this book. It's fantastic. It shows color palettes that have been put to work in real-world settings. It also has nice explanations on color theories and the meanings of colors. The book is well organized and detailed-- I haven't found an AdamsMorioka book that I didn't like. Great job! PS I got my book from an amazon subsidiary-- it was a used book from warehouse_deals for a smashing $17.08 + nominal shipping. You'd never guess that this book had ever been used. I ordered two other books from warehouse_deals, too... if you can snag a book from them at such a great price, you won't regret it. Their shipping is as quick as amazon's standard shipping. :)

5 out of 5 stars A nice overview.......2006-11-11

This book offers a great overview of color w/ practical uses in design. It covers consisely and clearly basic color concepts, theory, color meaning, and other useful advice and knowledge. It offers practical ways of looking at color through graphic design w/ case studies and showing lots of different work. The layout is fun, colorful and organized. This book should be recommeded on any design students reading list

4 out of 5 stars Colorful.......2006-03-27

I have started reading this book, so be warned.

My initial reaction is that it is a very good survey of color, the author(s) do a good enough job introducing color.

What I disagree with is their recommendation for color systems, but that's a personal opinion. As more and more people use the computer and (Adobe) software for color correction, I would tend towards the rbg + cmy color wheel.

Everything else I read is, like I said, a good introduction.

Birren has thoroughly researched the use of color in art and the theories of how color and its combinations work. Book Description

This hardworking reference book is an invaluable tool for art directors, designers, and students working in the fashion, product, and graphic design fields, as well as anyone in the business of visual communication.

The Pattern and Palette Sourcebook is a desktop library of colors and patterns that addresses the professional's real-world needs in working with harmonies and contrasts. Divided into six unique style sections, the book provides readers with 15 appropriate colors for each section, which are then incorporated into 25 different patterns shown in six or eight color variations each. This enables readers to see the dramatic effect colors have in design and helps them better understand how to use color effectively. The book also demonstrates ways of creating designs that are distinctly unique from one another yet hold together in a group. This book is a must have for designers of all disciplines and experience levels.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Wasted Purchase.......2006-04-26

I have to share the same sentiments with a few of the other reviewers. Typically, when a CD-ROM comes with a book of this nature, one would expect the visual content (in this case the patterns displayed in this book) to be available on the disc itself. Not the case here, which I thought was a bit deceiving. It would have been much smarter (and more practical for the end user) for the book author to have provided the patterns as EPS files for use in a vector based software application such as Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw. Otherwise what good is it to look at these patterns when you can't easily recreate them?

1 out of 5 stars Junk.......2005-11-13

First of all the content on the CD is not resuable in anyway. It comes with a semi-functional interactive CD that will allow you to print patterns but they are all locked Flash files so you can not use them in illustrator or in any other program.

The book itself is page after page of repeated patterns with slight color adjustment. The patterns are uninspired and dated. I would not recommend this book to anyone if I could give it negative stars i would.

5 out of 5 stars Georgeous patterns you can change color and printout.......2005-11-10

This book is filled with beautiful and diverse patters, some really modern and clean, others more ornate and traditional. The best part is the CD lets you change the colors in the patterns and then print them out for you to use. It's great for everything from professional design jobs to scrapbooking and personal projects.

1 out of 5 stars unhelpful book..........2005-09-24

I bought this book because i thought i can use the pattern in the cd provided, but unfortunately you cant use any of them, they saved it as flash animation format. Unlike the other book I have purchased "the complete pattern library" where you can use any pattern in the book and even change the colors of them.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Great Tile Summary.......2006-02-28

I'm in the process of building on the Maya Riviera so this isn't a book read for fun. This is real research looking for real ideas. Building in Spanish Colonial style can't be done without some incorporation of Mexican Tiles. This book is basically 90% pictures and 10% background and history of Mexican Tiles. The background write-up is excellent and gives good history of Talavera and Talavera-Style Tiles. Then it's on to different uses, floors, kitchens, bathrooms, walls and stairs, and patios and gardens.

I'm very simple in the colors I like in homes so these tiles can be "over the top". This book has a lot of these type pictures. It has more tile usage than I've ever seen on exteriors. The kitchen section has huge tile usage but I've seen more attractive usage in other books.

Overall, I did not get any ideas I will definitely use but I did get a different perspective on tile usage. There are definitely pictures I will take back to discuss with my architect and designer which may be incorporated. This book can be consumed in an hour. But it may take many hours of review going over the pictures again and again.

3 out of 5 stars A bit of a let down........2006-01-18

I love Mexican tiles but I felt the book was a bit of a let down. The pictures were a bit small and there wasn't enough information about tilemaking in the book. I think the book would have been much more effective in a larger format where the tiles would have been more impressive. There are some wonderful talavera tile websites on the net for anyone who wants a better overview.

3 out of 5 stars Great content.......2005-08-02

Book has great ideas. Wish it had been hardback. Book binding, does not want to hold together, considering the wear and tear it shall receive. This is also a great book.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!! Fulfilled ALL my expectations!.......2003-04-12

After I bought Masako Takahasi and her husband Tony Cohen's book "Mexicolor", I thought no other book I purchased would EVER compare to that experience. When I discovered "Mexican Tiles", I opened it with fear and trepidation, hoping against all hope, yet hardly daring to believe that it could be even half as good as their first.

But this book is AWESOME!! I think I finally figured out why, after reading Tony Cohen's book "On Mexican Time": these people simply ADORE Mexico, and it comes through in everything they do. All of the wonder and breathless anticipation and teary-eyed beauty that I feel and am so hopelessly unqualified to express when I am either in Mexico or adding to my collection of artesania, Tony vividly portrays in his prose and Masako captures with her camera.

As for subject matter, I LOVE Talavera tiles, Talavera pottery, Talavera ANYTHING, because they are so INCREDIBLY Mexican, and this book is simply PAGE after GORGEOUS PAGE of Talavera-lined kitchens, bathrooms, stairs, floors...you name it, it's tiled. If you at all appreciate ethnic interior design or Mexican handicrafts, this is an AWESOME book!!!

Following up on the popular Designer's Guide to Color Combinations, this book is certain to be an endless source of ideas and instruction for designers, illustrators and creative professionals in all fields. It features original designs from various regions around the world and examines their use of type and color. From Africa and Asia to Europe and the Middle East, readers will find dozens of fascinating pieces on display. Each design is carefully analyzed to show how and why it works. The author also makes recommendations about which colors should be used for type, border, background, etc. These suggestions, along with exact CMYK and RGB percentages for each design, will save designers much valuable time should they choose to incorporate the featured color combinations into their own work--a huge benefit for this audience.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Eyecandy of great inspirational and practical value........2004-04-26

This is the second volume, following The Designer's Guide To Color Combination. I own both and regularly browse them, just for pleasure or for practical use.

For artists, designers and the general public interested in color combinations, this marvellous book offers a cross cultural approach to the use of color. Each page depicts an artists piece, which may be paintings, illustration or fabric, with a small description and why the color use is interesting. The main colors in the piece are then broken down into CMYK and RGB values. (For non computer artists: this means the values you have to type in graphic software to get the colors depicted).

And if all this is not enough, there is also a second example on each page with a variation on the palette of the main piece, but with the main colors structured in a different way, which may give another mood.

Add to each page, even more creatieve variations on the main piece, and you get an enormous amount of color combinations.

However, this book will not teach you color theory. The author takes a intuitive subjective approach which does not go any further than 'this is eye catching'. But when you are from the school 'I don't mind about the theory, just show me the pictures', this book is simply the best you can get.

If there is one negative thing I could say about this book: because the RGB and CMYK values are given for each piece it would be even more practical for computer users to add a cd, so they could straight away add all the palettes as files to their graphic software.

Apart from this: this is book which you'll browse and browse again.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Time-Waster (I Mean That in the Best Way).......2003-12-14

A practical book, a beautiful book and a wonderful resource. Even if you have no need for a graphic design book, this would make a great coffee table book to impress your friends. For the graphic designer, fresh color combinations can (and have for me) changed the direction of an entire project. I work with small business clients in a wide range of businesses and have found this book invaluable for starting new projects, establishing an identity or finding a few neat color combos for a flyer. This book is worth the money!

    3 out of 5 stars Global Color.......2003-11-20

This book looks beautiful and does have many color combinations to inspire. I was disappointed by the lack of information on the background of why the countries covered would favor the colors they do. Also, Canada was not covered and sarcasm written about their tardy submission-so all Canadians should suffer because of this? The book would be useful if you have a number of color references already as this uses a different approach.

5 out of 5 stars A must for any visual artist.......2002-11-19

Along with its companion book in the series - The Designer's Guide to Color Combinations, The Designer's Guide to "Global" Color Combinations forms an essential reference for any visual artist or print publisher. I recommend these books to my students for their concept, storyboarding, color design, and animation layout work.

Each page breaks down a period, era, or style, and analyzes its color makeup with color and contrast swatches, CMYK data for each color, and a series of various combinations that are possible using the specified palette.

An artist could spend hours testing and comparing colors. Or they could look through these pages and find a color scheme in minutes.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty, but not helpful.......2002-10-24

The first in this series was a marvelous reference book. This one, however, seems more of an excuse for the author to "write" rather than illustrate color usage. The examples in the book are adequate, but not as comprehensive of a treatment of the various geographical locations represented as one would like. The commentary is superfluous and at times irritating.

Not a bad reference for color combo inspiration, but overall disappointing and does not live up to its predecessor.

    5 out of 5 stars Incredibly powerful.......2007-01-11

This book is an incredible reference for color theory and history. The inclusion of full panels of color reference make it one of the most useful books on the subject I've ever found.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Useful.......2006-02-24

I am in fashion design and have found the color palettes very useful in designing collections. Also, the text is informative without being boring.

5 out of 5 stars Great color palettes.......2005-07-09

I'm a graphic designer and this is a great book to look for color palettes. It explains what period the palette is from and gives you cultural information from that period. The palettes are different and beautiful. Margaret Walsh is a highly respected woman for her color knowledge.

3 out of 5 stars Unwieldly and Difficult To Use.......2003-12-23

The dual spiral constuction of this book makes any it practically impossible to read through the text while keeping the color swatches in view. I find the book to be shabbily put together - the spiral separated from the binding after one gentle use, so I was glad to have picked it up at a bargain book outlet.

There is some useful information in there, but getting it all together is not simple.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent analysis of color palettes across art history.......1999-01-06

This is an excellent book if you want to compare and analyze the basic color palettes used by various art movements and at different times in history. The unique double spiral bound book allows you to look at color illustrations and flip the palettes independently so you to compare and contrast palettes and artwork. I think this would be useful for artists and designers of all sorts including theatre designers.

    4 out of 5 stars It's interesting........2000-03-28

Japan and Japanese have their own view & style in writing and this book shows what's the style & view. The author says about 'European-style-usage of color and the underlying reasons and schemes' through eyes of a famous Japanese professor, so that it's somewhat unique and interesting. However, if you can read Japanese, I think it would be better trying to buy and read the original(Japanese) version. In a word, it's scrupulous and acceptable book.

Color choices may not be easy but they are doable if you follow the process outlined in this book.

'Colorist' is a fascinating insight into how and why color affects us and our impressions of the world. It abounds with images from nature, architecture, art and products.

It is not a simple book to immediately apply but it offers a workable process which relies on an excellent understanding of what is required from the color scheme being prepared. By applying the book's principles it is possible to develop both appropriate color schemes and the rationale behind why these are the right color choices!

I felt that some of the language suffered from being translated from Japanese but on the whole the book is well written and follows a logical progression identifying the various elements that need to go into making successful color choices.

If color is an important element of your life, whether at home or work, this book will help you identify your color prejudices and the right color combinations for a particular project. Overall a good buy!

Great book! Lot's of beautiful colors with CMYK values so that you can replicate them yourself.

    4 out of 5 stars What I expected........2007-08-02

I have enjoyed the book. Although I thought it would be more useful in terms of designing graphics arts, not my house. This book provides insight to color theory based on emotions and feelings when walking into a room; therefore, I would suggest this book for those looking to do some interior decorating and designing; not necessarily for graphic arts.

    5 out of 5 stars Complete & very useful.......2005-11-13

I buy this book because the title is "The COMPLETE Color Harmony". There are so many other books about color on the shelf, but the word 'COMPLETE' really hit me. Altough i'm working in the design field but i found myself need more resources to this main subject, color harmony.

This book is great, it gives me new ideas of color harmony. I often use it for my projects. What i liked about this book is that they put 'Moods & Color' section in it. Powerful, rich, romantic, vital, earthy, friendly, soft, welcoming, etc....with other colours combinations too. 'The Psychology of color' also a great one too along with the 'Process color convertions chart'. This book is absolutely complete!

    Book Description

Using and combining colors is now easy with the revolutionary new Color Image Scale developed by Japan's leading color psychologist, Shigenobu Kobayashi, the author of the best-selling A Book of Colors.

After three years of intensive research, Kobayashi and his team at the Nippon Color & Design Research Institute have matched 130 basic colors and over 1,000 color combinations to 180 key image words, allowing you the expression of any mood, lifestyle, or taste through the creative use of color
    combinations.

If you want to make an interior or an outfit "elegant", "romantic", or even "provocative", just look up -the word in the key image word index, and choose any one of the dozens of color combinations listed under the entry. Conversely, if you would like to know what mood certain colors or color
combinations suggest, refer to the color index.

Used by thousands of major designers and manufacturers in Japan, the Color Image Scale is a unique color resource for both professionals and amateurs alike.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book, Who stole my Blue?.......2001-10-27

I really like this book. The author created a standard color grid, red on the right, blue on the left, all the others in between, dark on the bottom, light on the top, except he used 3 color "patterns" rather than a single color in each box. Then he "inputted into our computer 180 image words that relate to the ways in which people percieve color, and also data on which words were associated with which colors." What his method is isn't expounded on

They linked the images to the words, and voila, you get sort of bubbly outline areas on the grid - these color combinations are elegant, these colors are fun, these colors are feminine or masculine, etc.

Since this book was first published in Japan in 1990, there are bound to be cultural discrepancies, and since this book is about the psychology of color, the 'conclusions' can be contested, though on the whole i think they're accurate.

My criticism stems from the fact that Blue in my book is missing. There's a page for "Red" and a page for "Yellow" and on, but no page for "Blue." There's a "Cerulean Blue" which is sort of turqoisy, and a "Light Blue" which looks like a darker Cerulean blue, and an "Ultramarine" which is closer to blue, but with a bit of violet in it. Who stole my blue?

A lot of the colors seem to have gone through a bad printing process as well, making me question whether or not I'm seeing the actual values. Ultramarine, for example, if you look closely (not that close, it's fairly obvious) is made up of lots of other colors. Am I supposed to hold it at arm's length to get an idea of what the color is?

Perhaps it was a bad printing.

5 out of 5 stars Psychology of Color Preferences.......2001-10-12

This book allows the designer/artist to personalize color choices for each client in a nontraditional way. By choosing "favorite words" a quick sketch of someone's preferences can easily be obtained. The book is simple to use, and allows clients to easily visualize what type of colors they prefer. I have used it in a multitude of design situations: painting and interior design, clothing design and sewing, and quilting. I have never been a fan of the conventional "color wheel," and I use this book as a reference and illustrative source when working with clients -- almost all of whom are amazed at the effect different color combinations can have on their everyday lives.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic for web design.......2000-10-05

This book provides an elaborate color theory that makes the color wheel look like stupid hippy frisbee. Colors are arranged in groups of three, and then grouped based on their overall feeling- it sounds preposterous, but you really will be attracted to certain regions more than others, and so will everyone else you show the book to.

The three color arrangements are particularly nice for Web page design, even though the CMYK nor RGB values are given. But this is forgivable, since this book was not intended for that purpose.

An excellent resource for anyone working with color, and a great tool for any web designer.

5 out of 5 stars best guide to color in universe.......2000-08-10

Have you ever wondered what color to use with another? This guide book shows - in very easy terms - a range of possible combinations using one particular color and shade as a starting point. For anyone who cares about color, this book is a MUST! I wish the author would publish a more extensive guide. No other book matches this wonderful little guidebook.

5 out of 5 stars excellent book for understanding the psychology of colour.......1999-01-25

As a graphic designer it is important to establish colour boundaries objectively. This book adds to the process significantly. Over time it adds a dimension to the consultative process of design giving weight to yourself as a professional who can find unique solutions to the business environment.
